...Rising gracefully, she held the sword flat across her bare palms and began to chant in an ancient form of Katallan.

“From the earth, from the sky, from the ancient sea,

Let the power of the sword return and center in me.”

Shifting her grip, she grasped the hilt in both hands and held the blade high above her head.
A wind sprang up out of nowhere, laden, first with the scent of new grass, next the saltwater tang of ocean winds, and finally the fragrance of burning incense.

She called, “Show me your power.”

On the last word, a low humming sound filled the air around them. A trickle of blue flame lazily curled up and down the blade. Then a stream of fire erupted from the tip of the blade and shot skyward.

Faith stood with the sword raised for what seemed like hours even though Kadar knew by his watch that only a handful of minutes had passed.

As the shower of fire began to subside, she said, “Put your hands over mine. A man and woman sharing the power make it stronger.”

He wiped his clammy palms, and noted, wryly, that he'd rather stick the pin back into a live grenade. Nevertheless, he faced his brave little spitfire and closed his hands over hers.

The sword vibrated in their combined grip. Kadar sensed a great stirring in the psychic plane.
And a deep voice spoke in the depths of his mind. Nicholas Kadar Ben Hamad, honorable son of Duraza. My brother, The Sword of Night, and I grant you the power to call us to your will.

On the last word, the voice fell silent, the fire stopped, and once more, the sword slept...

...He drew her right hand to his lips and kissed each fingertip, watching her eyes grow darker. As he touched his tongue to the tender skin between her fingers, she trembled.

“Quinn.” Her breathing quickened, and she laid her fingers on his chest. “This isn’t a good idea.”

“On the contrary. It’s a very good idea,” he said in a low voice, pressing his lips to her palm.

Closing her hand as if to treasure the kiss, she whispered his name.

He stroked his fingers down her arms, and held her. The warm silkiness of her skin, her sweet scent of roses and woman sent the blood pounding through his veins. “I want to taste you again.”

Wordlessly, she lifted her face to him.

Bending his head, he feathered kisses across her forehead to her temples where the blood pulsed under delicate skin. There, he lingered, tasting, savoring the sweetness and the hint of salt.

Overhead, the evening sky was clear and dotted with stars.

The prevailing breeze whirled around them, carrying the scents of fresh grass and flowers.

Brianna’s wind chimes played a mystical sounding melody.

Shifting his hold on Heather, he cradled her head in one hand. Her shimmering hair took on a life of its own, as strands drifted around his wrist. He spread his fingers across the middle of her slender back, holding his eagerness in check. She needed tenderness tonight, not speed.

“I can’t get enough of you,” he muttered, and traced the soft fullness of her lips with the tip of his tongue.

Murmuring his name, she wrapped her arms around his waist, melting and flowing against him.

Her surrender intoxicated him. The blood roared in his ears. A hot wave swept through him, and he struggled to contain the primitive urge to take her right there on the grass.

Then he felt her lips on his throat, and his control snapped. His mouth captured hers in a blaze of passion, his tongue slipping past her teeth to the softness beyond. Her tongue touched and mated with his. She moaned and her fingers dug into his back through the thin barrier of his shirt.

Shifting his stance, he pressed his arousal against the feminine heat between her thighs.

Her low, sensuous sound of approval sent his blood racing in an explosion of need.

He wanted, had to have her now, and to hell with anyone or anything...

Excerpt:

In the mansion, Brand opened his bedroom window to let the winter-chilled breeze cool his nude body. Hands on the snowy windowsill, he leaned out into the night.

Beyond the dark pines and firs of Hawk Mountain, Walkersville nestled in the valley carved by the Walker and Little Deer rivers. The town's single traffic light blinked stop, go, stop, go. Like him and Sharon. He grimaced. Why did everything remind him of her?

Was she asleep? Did she dream of those moments in his bedroom, held in his embrace? He smiled grimly at his body's heavy salute to the memory. Damn, cold showers were hell and grossly overrated.

He flung himself into bed and draped the goose down comforter up around his waist, but sleep eluded him. He opened his eyes to the glow of moonlight reflected from the snow. Stacking his hands behind his head, he studied the diamond shapes carved in the ceiling and embellished with fleurs-de-lis.

A tapestry hung on the wall where it caught the light. In rich detail it showed a maiden and a unicorn. In the first panel she coaxed the mythical beast to come to her. In the second, it knelt at her side. In the third, the obviously masculine unicorn had settled on the ground with its head in the young woman's lap. Her hand gently stroked it while in the background hunters moved closer.

Why did he read a warning in that story of a unicorn trapped by the fragile bonds of love?

Love? Not for him, if there was such a thing.

He rolled onto his stomach and thumped the pillow with one fist. In the morning, he'd see Sharon again.

“Tomorrow.” His harsh tones filled the room. “Tomorrow, I'll seduce her.”
