FATE UNEXPECTED by Marisa Chenery

FATE UNEXPECTED by Marisa Chenery

Earth Defender-Book One

A summer storm of red rain changed life as Kylah knew it, and her in ways she couldn't imagine. Humans around the world sickened and died, or turned into wild creatures with red eyes that hungered for flesh. Her planet was on the verge of extinction, and there was nothing anybody could do about it.

Rune, a Dracan mercenary, had signed on with the Xphens to fight for them during the Earth conquest. Having Kylah capture him changed everything. She had him questioning which side he wanted to be on.

Kylah finds herself drawn to the large cat-eyed alien. Fleeing with Rune to the Cascade mountain range, she lets her feelings for him cloud her judgment. From two different planets, theirs is a relationship that could end before it had a chance to start.

Excerpt:

Kylah drove away in the pre-dawn darkness and forced herself to not look back. It suddenly hit her that she left behind what had been the happy world with her parents. It hadn’t bothered her when she’d prepared to make the trip, but now that she actually did, tears burned the backs of her eyes.

She pushed them away. She’d cried more than enough in the days after she’d awakened from her sickness. Mostly when she’d had to dig a grave in the backyard to bury her dad. Before the illness, it would have been a monumental task, but it’d been relatively easy for her. It was physically putting him into the ground and covering him with dirt that had been tough.

At Curlew Lake, Kylah parked her car between two others that had been abandoned. Since she hadn’t washed hers since the aliens’ arrival, it blended in. If people happened to come across it, she didn’t want it to stand out.

Kylah climbed out, then went to the trunk where she’d stored what she’d taken with her. She took out her sword, and one of the backpacks that had some necessities in it like a couple bottles of water and a few energy bars. Before she lugged the rest of her things into the bush, she wanted to scout the area and pick out a spot that would be a good place to set up her new home.

She closed the trunk, strapped on her sword and shouldered the backpack. Kylah had been to the lake many times, and knew the area fairly well. She started walking on one of the trails, then cut into the trees. Dawn was about an hour away. She wanted to have a location picked out before the sun rose. There was no telling if any of the turned had ranged that far.

Kylah bypassed the lake and headed for the more mountainous area where the bush was thicker. She walked at a brisk pace for the new her, which would have had someone else having to run to keep up.

She slowed, then came to a stop to hide behind a large tree when she stumbled across a sort of clearing in the midst of the forest. Kylah peeked around the thick trunk to get a better view. It looked as if some of the trees had been cut down to create it. The logs lay in a pile near the edge of the space.

It was a campsite, but not a human one. The circular perimeter was enclosed in what she supposed was a force field. With her keen eyesight, she was able to see the waves of energy. Inside it, there were two white metallic-looking dome structures. Alien versions of tents? She could only guess. Next to them were two vehicles that looked sort of like wheel-less motorcycles.

Kylah drew fully behind the tree. An idea swirled inside her mind. It was crazy, but it was time for the aliens to be the prey. And there was a possibility she could get answers as to what the hell they’d done to her planet along with why they were there.

She took a deep breath. She was going to do it. She was going to see if she could capture one of the aliens. A single dome looked as if it could hold only one occupant. Maybe inside them were the two she’d seen last night in town. The spot was close enough to Republic for a basecamp.

To set her plan into motion, Kylah silently ran through the trees to the opposite perimeter. She had to draw the aliens out. With that force field up, there was no way she could sneak into their camp. So she caused a disturbance they wouldn’t be able to ignore.

Kylah threw back her head and let out a drawn-out howl like one the turned would make. She added a few loud growls for good measure. To top it off, she let loose a shrill scream as if she were a woman who was being pursued by the turned. At the sound of alien voices speaking in urgent tones, she ran at her fastest to the back of the camp.

She smiled. The two aliens were indeed the ones she’d seen in town. The furred one touched some kind of wrist device that was strapped to his arm, then ran off in the direction where she’d been. Kylah gazed at the one who looked very much like a human. He was the one she wanted, and not because she still thought he was a hunk.

After a few more seconds and the furry alien didn’t return, Kylah made some more growls to lure the other one to her. He took the bait. She hid behind a tree and drew her sword. She’d knock him out, then get him farther up on the mountain before his buddy returned.

She took a quick glance. He was headed right for her. As he neared her tree, she walked around it as he passed before silently coming up behind him. She raised her sword, drew it back, then with the flat of it, hit him on the back of his head hard enough to knock him out. He hit the ground like a ton of bricks.

Acting quickly, she took out two zip ties that she had in her backpack. She’d been prepared for anything. She jerked his arms behind his back and bound his wrists together. She did the same to his ankles. Thankful for her super strength, she bent and managed to hoist him over her shoulder. She straightened. He wasn’t exactly light, but she’d be able to carry him a distance to where the other alien wouldn’t find them. At least she hoped or it all could go terribly wrong with her being captured.

As she ran at her top speed while weighed down, the other alien called out a single word. Rune. She bet that was the name of her prize.

Without a word, Beth broke free and then stomped off on her white high heels. He groaned. How did he always manage to say the wrong thing to her? All he wanted to do was to get to know her and have her open up to him just a little. He wasn’t asking for much. Although, part of him wondered what it’d be like to be married.

With a deep breath and heavy heart, he hurried toward the front door of the hall where Beth had ran off to. A couple minutes later, he found her sobbing in the parking lot next to a rusty Honda. Red looked better on her than it did on the car.

“Go away!” She sniffed and glowered at him.

“Beth,” he said in a soft tone. “I’m sorry if I said something to upset you. I wouldn’t want to dance with anyone but you.”

She wiped her wet eyes. “I don’t want to get involved with you and have it come back to bite me in the ass.”

“I know.”

She puckered her lips. “No, you don’t. I’ve been burned way too many times to be starting something new with a guy like you.”

“I’m not like your other boyfriends,” he whispered.

“And how would you know that?” She tapped her foot.

“Because,” he brushed a loose tendril of hair away from her face. “I’m not going to cheat on you or lie to you like they did.”

She shuddered at his touch. “You confuse me.”

“Beth.” He stepped closer.

From somewhere behind him, a growl echoed across the parking lot. The little hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. What the fuck? His stomach clenched. It couldn’t be, could it?

Before he could turn around or even push Beth out of the way, a hairy werewolf wrapped its paws around his ankles and brought him to the ground. His hands flew up, and his left wrist slammed into the side of the car. He winced from the pain as a sickening crack filled his ears.

Beth screamed and tried to run away, but the werewolf scooped her up and threw her onto the hood of the car. Chad stumbled to his feet, his wrist throbbing. He sucked in a harsh breath and lunged at the wolf.

“Don’t fucking touch her!”

The wolf with red eyes growled, baring its teeth, and shoved Chad away with a paw before it sank its sharp yellow teeth into Beth’s side.

Chad froze. Millions of thoughts raced through his head. Where the hell had this werewolf come from? What if it killed Beth? If something happened to her…

He shook off the negative thoughts and ran toward the wolf with a pounding heart. It roared and ran off into the dark night.

His gut twisted into knots, his wrist killing him, he ran to Beth. Blood soaked the right side of her dress. Panic swept through him. No. The werewolf couldn’t have killed her. He had to save her before it was too late.

“Beth?”

No response. Chad swallowed as he looked over at her. She was motionless on the hood of the car. Is it too late? He grabbed her wrist. She still had a pulse. Her breath came out unsteady and slow. He had to get her to a hospital.

He scooped her up into his arms and held her tight against him. Guilt washed over him. If only he could have saved her sooner. How would he ever live with himself if she didn’t make it? A werewolf had attacked her. Just how Brandon had gotten the bite.

He held his breath as he headed to his car. With one arm, he gripped Beth. He pulled his car remote out of his pocket and then hit the unlock button. In order to open the car door, he had to set Beth onto the hood. That done, he picked her up again and then gently placed her into the passenger’s side. Blood covered his hands and white shirt, but that didn’t matter right now.

They arrived at the hospital five minutes later. As he rushed over to the door to open it, Beth jerked up, her eyes wide.

His heart thundered as he yanked the door open. “Beth? Are you okay?”

“I-I don’t know,” she stuttered.

Chad winced as pain shot through his wrist.

Beth tried to stand, but wobbled and nearly fell on her face. “What’s wrong with your wrist and why are you bleeding?” She leaned against the car for support.

“It’s probably just a bruise from when I tried to save you from the werewolf that attacked you. The blood is from you.”

She shook her head. “Your wrist could be broken. We need to get it checked out.”

He clenched his teeth. “I’m fine. I’ll put some ice on it. Good as new.”

Her green eyes darkened. “Stop being so fucking stubborn. Let’s go inside the ER and find out.” She tugged at the sleeve of his jacket and waved him toward the hospital building.

“What about you?” He looked her over from head to toe. Not one scratch covered her. Visibly, anyway. Blood no longer soaked her dress either, only a tear remained on the right side where she’d received a bite. No doubt a werewolf had done that. The same thing had happened to Brandon when he was sixteen.

She looked away. “I don’t know what happened."

He draped his good arm around her waist. “You were attacked by a werewolf. You’re healed.”

“Fine. Let’s get you checked out.”

As they walked up the sidewalk path to the hospital, his heart weighed heavy with guilt. That shouldn’t have happened to Beth. He’d get to the bottom of who was behind the werewolf bite, even if it’d be the death of him.

Blackrock had undergone a drastic transformation from blue collar town to a bustling hipster community. Gone were the boring gray buildings, replaced by vibrantly-painted storefronts. To say he was surprised was an understatement. Emmett drove down old Morrow Street when something odd caught his eye.

He parked his fully-loaded top-of-the-line sedan and then walked into the empty alley. Sticking out of big old rusty garbage bin was a pair of shapely legs. First thing on his agenda after dropping his gear at the big house was getting laid. Doyle would laugh his ass off if he ever learned how a pair of dummy legs had distracted Emmett. For a moment, they looked real enough. Unable to take the stench of the bins, he headed back to his car. A clanking noise stopped him in midstride.

“Where the fuck are those damn eyes?”

Emmett heard the voice, but couldn’t find its source. It was dammed sexy, husky enough to make his cock twitch. He glanced back in time to see the legs move. How’d he mistaken them for a mannequin? Curious to see the rest of the woman attached to them, he crossed back to the bin and pulled her up.

“Mind telling me what you’re doing head first in a garbage bin?” His balls tightened to a painful knot when her generous ass brushed over his face. It was big and round. Emmett couldn’t stop his hand from smacking it. Hello, sweet cheeks. Where have you been all my life? he thought, swallowing back drool. Today is my lucky day…OohRah!

“Ouch. What the fuck is wrong with you, jerk?” The woman squealed with outrage and tried to pull out of his grip.

He’d no idea why he’d done it. Just a glance at her butt and his hand acted on its own. His rod was so hard he could have drilled a hole through a concrete a wall. Emmett hoped she wasn’t too angry, because he had plans for her later that evening.

“I’m sorry. I thought you were slipping and I tried to grab you. Here, let me help you.” He plastered what he hoped was his charming smile on his face, lying to her without a second thought.

“Keep your hands to yourself, Slappy. I can get out without your help,” she yelled, tugging his arms to try to get free.

Fat chance. She was right where he wanted her. He tightened his grip around her waist, but she screamed bloody murder, bringing everyone within earshot. Now why had she gone and done that and ruined such a romantic moment?

In a town ran by a wolf pack it meant everybody. She squirmed against him, trying to break loose. She gasped before painfully digging her nails into his arms. His wolf growled a warning. I’ve scented my mate. If you hurt her, I’ll make you regret it for the rest of your life.

“Candy, what’s going on? Are you okay?”

Emmett recognized the voice as to belonging to Max Dietz. He remembered him as a little boy genius always trying to build or fix something. Max’s defiant stared told Emmett he wasn’t that little boy anymore. The protective stance he’d taken in front of the woman spoke volumes. His wolf snarled at him, trying to assert his ownership. To the boy’s credit, he flinched but didn’t move.

Emmett looked at his arms. She’d drawn blood. It pooled around her nails. Now that she was out of the bin her scent hit him like a pie on a clown’s face. Mother fucker, she smelled good, even among garbage. The more he tightened his hold, the harder she squirmed, rubbing that ass against his happy cock.

“Oh, hell, no. Are you growling at me? Is that your… Ewww, dude, stop poking me with your shit.”

Boy was she full of spirit, but he had to work on her language. “Stop rubbing your bubble butt against it. You’re making me horny,” he whispered into her ear. To make his point he ground his hips harder.

“You’re disgusting.” She gasped angrily, but Emmett wasn’t fooled. He could smell her. She wanted him.

“Your ass is sweet like your name,” Emmett whispered again, then gave Max a warning growl. The young pup reached for his woman. His? Where the hell had that came from? Startled, he pushed her into Max’s arms. What was wrong with him? He’d never reacted to a woman this way before. She’s human. I can’t get involved with one right now or ever.

Brolach was three thousand years old and had “slept” through two thousand of them. He was the only one of his kind—a hybrid, half vampire and half werewolf. Even though he’d been under the ground for so long he’d been partly aware of the surface world. People traversed the area, and as the years went by, the language they spoke changed. His mostly-asleep brain learned it enough to understand it.

Something brought his mind closer to wakefulness before he was ready to be roused. There was a presence on the hill where he was buried. It drew him and captured his attention as nothing had done for centuries. It was female, which caused a part of him to stir.

Soon a male joined her. Brolach listened to their conversation, his sensitive hearing able to pick up each word spoken. The longer he listened the more he awakened from his long slumber. The need to protect the female came to life. Never before had he’d felt like that toward a member of the opposite sex. The vampire side of him instinctively knew she was his. His mate. The werewolf wouldn’t know for sure until he had her scent in his nose.

The sound of the male’s voice raised in anger would have had Brolach’s hackles rising if he’d been in wolf form. It wasn’t until the female screamed did he come fully awake. The sound was full of fear.

Brolach burst out of the ground. His fangs lengthened at the sight of the male holding the female by the arm with a raised fist, ready to strike. Brolach snarled his upper lip and growled a warning. All his protective instincts roared to the surface. He latched his gaze on to the human who threatened his mate.

He surged into action. Brolach closed the distance between them, broke the male’s grip on the female and tossed him away. He landed with a shriek, then whimpered as Brolach approached him. He was tempted to kill the weaker male, to drain him of the blood he needed after his long sleep, but he decided against it. This new world he awoke to wasn’t the same as the one he’d known. Death wasn’t doled out so easily or frequently as it’d once been.

Rather than take the male’s life, Brolach reached for the werewolf half of himself and brought on the change. He took on his wolf form in a matter of seconds. His hackles rose and he growled as he made a threatening step toward the male. That was enough to send the human scuttling backward before he clumsily gained his feet and took off running down the hill.

Once he was sure the male wouldn’t come back, Brolach turned to take his first good look at the female who was his mate. She had long, light brown hair that she wore loose around her shoulders. She was the perfect height to tuck her head under his chin when he held her against his chest. Her hazel eyes were wide and filled with fear, but that didn’t take away any of her beauty. His cock stirred to life for the first time in two thousand years.

He slowly walked toward her, which had a whimper pushing out of her. Even though she was scared of him, Brolach didn’t stop until he stood directly in front of her. He shifted back to his human form, thinking she’d find it easier to handle.

He took a deep breath. Her scent filled his lungs and his head. He found it intoxicating, and it set off his werewolf’s senses. His wolf side recognized her as his mate along with the vampire. She was his. A mate. The first woman he’d ever wanted to claim.

Brolach reached out for her only to have her suck in a lungful of air and then let it out in a high-pitched scream. That didn’t bother him so much as how fast her heart beat. The sharp bitter scent of her fear grew stronger. As she opened her mouth to scream again, he caught her chin in his hand and forced her to look him in the eyes.

With his vampire ability to compel lacing his words, he said softly, “You’ll no longer fear me. You’re perfectly safe. No harm will come to you. We’ll leave this place and you’ll take me to your home to provide me with food and clothing.”

All at once, she calmed down. Her heart beat at a normal rate, and the scent of fear blew away on the slight breeze. She nodded as her gaze remained fixed on him. “Okay,” she said, sounding in a daze.

“What’s your name?”

“Waverly.”

“I’m Brolach.”

“Brolach,” she repeated in the same dazed voice.

“I’ll release you now. No more screaming. You’ll always feel safe with me.”

He stopped compelling, releasing the hold he had over her mind. Waverly blinked a few times, coming back to herself. Brolach hoped never again to have to use it on his mate. If there had been any other way to have calmed her, he would have chosen it rather than take her free will away.

Waverly took a deep breath and looked him up and down. “Come on. We’d better get out of here before someone sees you.”

Brolach stayed at her side as she headed down the hill. As they walked, he gazed at the landscape around them. It really hadn’t changed much over the last two thousand years. He still recognized it as the land where he’d hunted buffalo and deer.

Her heart beat faster as she neared his table. You can do this, she told herself as a pep talk. As his gaze latched on to her and didn’t waver, Kareena lost her nerve. She quickly changed direction and walked as fast as she could in her drunken state to the women’s washroom.

Once she was closed inside, she groaned as she silently called herself all kinds of vile names. While she was there, she used the toilet. Kareena was sure her friends were all shaking their heads at her. She hadn’t always been like this. Before her ex, she’d been more outgoing with the opposite sex, but since her breakup, she’d found she couldn’t get back into her old groove. Even though it’d been a year, Kareena hadn’t been out on a single date. With her busy work schedule, and trying to get over being dumped by her fiancé, she hadn’t made a point of getting back into the dating world. And being over thirty, she didn’t think that’d be an easy task, anyway.

She washed her hands and took some deep, calming breaths. She’d march back out and walk straight to the guy’s table. She’d introduce herself and then ask him to take her to his place and screw her brains out. No. Kareena wouldn’t say that. Maybe he’d be more interested in sneaking her into the men’s room and taking her against the washroom stall door. She shook her head, which only made the room spin a bit. Where the hell had that idea come from? The men’s room? Ah, gross. She had to be drunker than she’d thought. Or horny enough to do the hunk anywhere. It had been a year since she’d last done the horizontal mambo, after all.

Kareena left the washroom and headed once more in the direction of the table where, thank god, the hottie still sat. His gaze latched on to her, and it felt as if he physically touched her breasts when it lingered there. She forgot to breathe as her pussy grew wet, an ache building deep inside it.

In her inattention, she stumbled into a chair, which made a screech as the legs dragged across the hardwood floor. Embarrassed by her klutziness, Kareena lost her nerve again and made a beeline for the table where her friends sat. She couldn’t even look over at the hunk to see what his reaction was.

She slid onto the bench seat, grateful to see a full glass of wine on the table in her spot. Kareena picked it up and took a big sip. She looked at all her friends and found them giving her disappointed looks.

Kareena shrugged. “All right, I’m chicken shit and couldn’t do it.”

“You need to get out of the slump you’re in,” Alice said.

“I will. It just won’t be with him unless he comes over to talk to me.”

“If he doesn’t?”

“Then it wasn’t meant to be.”

There was still disapproval on her friends’ faces, but they didn’t say anything else. Kareena finished her wine, knowing full well she’d gone over her limit and would probably come to regret it in the morning. Right now, she just felt way too good to care.

Once they’d taken care of the bill, all four of them slipped off the seats, then headed for the restaurant’s entrance. Kareena was definitely not very steady on her feet, but she managed to keep in a straight line.

It didn’t remain that way when she reached the doors. She stepped back so Lacy could open them, and Kareena’s sense of balance went all out of whack. She would have fallen, but a set of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind and pulled her against a hard, male body. She turned her head to look up at who held her and saw it was the hunk. Her mouth suddenly went dry, especially when the unmistakable ridge of his erection pressed into the small of her back. Arousal tore through her, making her knees even weaker.

He smiled. “I’ve got you.”

“Hi,” she said, the one word coming out a bit slurred.

“Let me help you outside.”

Kareena didn’t say a word as he shifted her to his side and tucked her under his arm. He was tall—at least six-foot-three. She liked tall men since she was no munchkin. The heat from his body seemed to envelope her as she put her arm around his waist to anchor herself. The scent of his cologne hit her nose, and she dragged in a lungful, liking the smell.

Outside, her friends gave her encouraging smiles and said their goodbyes, leaving Kareena alone with the hottie. She was sure she’d get phone calls from all of them tomorrow.

She looked at the hunk and found him intently watching her. Her pussy clenching with need, Kareena said the first thing that came to her mind. “I’m Kareena. Why don’t you take me to your place?” Of course all her words kind of slurred together, but the smile he flashed her said he didn’t seem to mind.

“I’m Miles,” he said in his deep voice. “Are you sure you’re in any condition for that?”

“I’ll admit I’m a bit drunk, but I’m good.”

“How about I drive you home instead?”

“Okay. You can spend the night with me.”

He chuckled and walked her over to the parking lot and a fancy black Audi. With a push of a button, he had the car unlocked. Once he had the passenger door open, he helped her onto the leather seat and waited until she’d buckled her seatbelt before he closed her inside. In a matter of seconds, he was behind the wheel and starting the engine.

Kareena settled deeper into the seat as Miles backed up and then drove out of the parking lot. Her eyes grew heavy as he merged with the traffic. Unable to keep them open any longer, she fell into a deep sleep.

DEFENDERS OF CAPRA by Jaylee Davis

DEFENDERS OF CAPRA by Jaylee Davis

The Nemesis Chronicles-Book Two

Shayna, a touch telepath, has pressing goals—lose her virginity to someone she can’t read before her father changes her to an immortal form, find out who or what she is and kill whoever is trying to kidnap her. Easy? Not so much.

Daemon, a Tauran warrior, is stuck on a diplomatic mission, escorting Tauran ambassadors to Capra for trade negotiations with the ruler of Free Space. He never expected to find and claim his mate while he was there. And he certainly never expected her to be Drake’s virginal daughter. He’d always hoped to die in battle.

Drake has problems. Two mighty empires near Free Space are at war. Delvans have tried to capture his adopted daughter. A Tauran warrior has claimed her. His son, Jonathan, seems hell bent on killing her new mate. Vengeance, his son’s wraith, is behaving stranger than normal. If that weren’t enough, Nemesis has been in hibernation for over two-hundred years with no sign of waking. He never wanted this job.

Excerpt:

Since the arrival of the newcomers, Daemon was even more on edge. He tried hard to not glance over his shoulder in their direction. He’d heard the larger male order drinks, but hadn’t been able to hear what the female had said or what he’d told her in response. He couldn’t help but think they were being quiet because of him and Garrett. Occasionally, he’d catch a scent from the male and the D’Lyrian. Both seemed normal, however, the D’Lyrian’s was tainted, faintly. The female’s proved more difficult. He suspected her cloak covered the scent.

He hand signaled his frustration to Garrett, who agreed and signed back he’d not had any success either. He’d also included a nasty message, telling him to forget about the strangers and enjoy himself. Daemon laughed out loud at the crude comment.

At the moment, he had another beer to choke down. This one tasted better than the last…soap scum. He wondered what whiskey might taste like, and at the thought he glanced over at his neighbor’s empty glass.

Beyond it, two of the bluest eyes he’d ever seen stared back at him. He quickly looked away, but not before noting how incredibly attractive she was. Tendrils of black hair framed her delicate face. Her wine-stained lips were lush and way too inviting for him to chance another look. She’d been leaning her chin against her gloved hands, which were clasped and resting on the bar’s edge. Was she that short?

Unable to resist, he glanced her way and saw that one of the males must have pulled a stool over so she could sit. He swore silently and vowed to not look at her again. A female who was surrounded so protectively was off-limits to any rational thinking male.

Garrett kicked his boot against the side of Daemon’s just as a Tauran spacer staggered up to the bar and clapped them both on the shoulders. He was obnoxious and beyond drunk.

“You two aren’t the only big males in town tonight, right?” He swayed, barely able to stand. The major problem was his inability to shut his mouth. “You should challenge him for that female,” he said, each word spoken louder than the last.

A soft growl came from the wall area where the D’Lyrian warrior leaned. The drunken spacer took a couple steps toward the dark-haired male, saying, “Let’s take a look at the goods.”

*

Jonathan cursed under his breath and bent slightly to reach for one of his daggers. As his hand closed around the handle, the drunken Tauran lurched backward, viciously snatched away by the warrior nearest him and slammed head first against the bar top. The other warrior silenced the troublemaker with a hard punch to the jaw when he continued to protest. He motioned for the other spacers to come and collect their unconscious friend.

“Sorry,” the first warrior grumbled the apology. “He’s an idiot.”

Jonathan nodded and let go of his dagger. He glanced at Reardon and raised his brows. His friend answered with a slight shrug.

A different bartender, male, had made his way to the end of the bar during the brief scuffle. He caught Jonathan’s attention and asked if they would like to order something different.

“Finally,” Reardon gritted out.

Once again, Jonathan ordered their drinks. After he paid an exorbitant amount in credits, they had more whiskey, wine and a tiny data disc. He slipped it to Shayna for safekeeping.

“Good thing I wore that bra,” she whispered.

He chuckled. “Drink up so we can get out of here.”

Jonathan leaned his back against the bar while he watched the crowd. He noticed how the warrior who’d apologized for the spacer glanced toward them, not often but more than usual. He looked down at Shayna. Sure enough, she leaned across the bar top just far enough to peek back at him.

He nudged her—hard. “Would you stop looking at the nice warrior? You’ll irritate him.”

“Oh, sorry,” she muttered.

Daemon smiled. He’d heard the exchange between them and knew they were about to leave. Suddenly his irritation level spiked and he struggled to gain control. After all, there was no reason for him to be upset. For a short while, he’d been able to enjoy a few stolen glances with a beautiful female. He’d tasted beer, hopefully for the last time, and he’d prevented a brawl.

Normally, he’d have welcomed a good bar fight, but this time things had been different. He wasn’t about to allow anyone to hurt the female. After an exchange of hand signs, he knew Garrett thought he’d lost his mind. Daemon blamed the beer.
