When Adrian walked into the foyer he spotted Cynthia and the redhead standing next to her. His body immediately responded with a tug in the gut and a tightening in his groin. She was a tad shorter than Cynthia, which would put her at about five-seven. The green dress molded to her curvy body, athletic but not skinny. Fair skin gleamed with a natural glow. He lived in Florida but he was as pale as some of the snowbirds. Carter was right, he worked too damn much.

As if she sensed his perusal, she looked his way and made eye contact. Confident, intelligent eyes, but slightly vulnerable. As a sub, she’d be perfect if that was her inclination. He didn’t like subs who had no mind of their own. They were overly dependent, needy. Too bad she had no experience.

“Hey, Emma.” Carter walked over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Meet our friend, Adrian Cayne.”

They shook hands and exchanged greetings. For a newbie she didn’t seem that nervous or managed to cover it up well.

“Emma is a caretaker at an animal shelter,” Carter said. “And Adrian’s a doctor.”

 “What specialty?” Emma asked.

“Neurosurgery,” Adrian said. “What kinds of animals have you cared for?”

“Mostly dogs and cats. When I worked at Animal Kingdom, I had a chance to work with all types.”

“What brought you down here?” Adrian asked.

“It was… A number of things brought about the relocation.” She didn’t explain.

Maybe she moved with a boyfriend and it didn’t work out. He wasn’t going to press.

“I just love this room,” Cynthia said, changing the subject as she gazed out toward the ocean. “It’s still quiet, but on busy nights, this room is full of guests. You usually won’t see couples or groups having sex out here, just touching, sometimes getting naked. Hard core stuff goes on in the rooms.”

“Has anyone explained the rules yet?” Carter asked Emma.

“Not completely.”

“An open door is an invitation to watch,” Adrian offered. “Those playing inside a room must invite you in. Guests can’t just waltz in during a group scene. It’s rather rude and you’ll probably get thrown out. If there are enough complaints, a guest can be asked to leave the club.” He watched her expression. A Dom could pick up the smallest telltales. He focused his attention on her soft, hazel eyes. She was looking at him and around the room, alert, taking in every detail. The muscles in her jaw and long neck were relaxed but she gripped the strap of her purse with a tight fist.

Adrian had numerous encounters in here over the years. Eager subs anxiously anticipating a scene. Could she be his next eager sub? Or was she a newbie who thought she might like bondage only to freak out the moment she had to give up a little control. That was the disadvantage of taking on a new submissive.

“Dark Odyssey was overdue,” Carter explained to Emma. “The one semi-bondage room with restraint table and swing was very popular. Patrons kept requesting more rooms with better bondage equipment.” He pointed the way toward a long hallway where the old playrooms were. He described the rules—how no, meant no. If any guest approached her and she told him no and was still pressured, then tell one of the guys in the black TropiX T-shirts.

Adrian stood beside her. “You’re not saying much?”

She jumped and looked up at him. “I’m taking it all in. This is new for me.”

“Adrian!” A woman called from across the room. It took him a moment but he recognized the voice. Every muscle in his body tensed. If he had known she would be here, he wouldn’t have come.

Jill strutted across the room in killer platform heels and a slinky silvery-white dress that was practically see-through. Her brown hair was longer since he’d seen her last, pulled back from her shoulders. More of her breasts hung out of the dress than were contained. Her rosy areolas showed through the flimsy material. Sliding between Adrian and Emma, her back rudely facing Emma, she put her arms around him and kissed him. “I’ve missed you, Master. So glad to see you’re back. Will you take me to Dark Odyssey this evening?” She lowered her head and slid her hands down his chest.
Grasping her hands, Adrian gently pulled them away. “Good to see you, Jill. I’m with friends this evening.” He stepped back to introduce Emma, Cynthia and Carter.

Jill gave Emma a quick up-and-down glance and apparently decided she wasn’t competition. “Would you like me to give you all a tour of Dark Odyssey?” She hooked arms with Adrian.

“Thanks, Jill, but Cynthia and Carter will be giving us a tour.” He knew how possessive and needy she could be and he didn’t want to get into that now.

Jill’s expression hardened with a forced smile. “Enjoy the tour. I’ll talk to you later, Adrian. I’ll be down here for a while unless I meet someone.”

“Have a good evening,” he said. The others, including Emma said goodbye.

“I didn’t know she was going to be here,” Cynthia said, obviously concerned.

Across the room, two men and a woman on one of the sofas fondled one another. The men groped her breasts and between her legs. A second later, her blouse was off and one man sucked her nipples.
The woman had her hand down one guy’s pants while kissing the other man. Adrian noticed Emma watched them with parted lips.

“Anything appeal to you? Or offend?” Adrian asked.
“I like the openness and sensual atmosphere,” she said. “I feel safe. I’m not sure if I’d get into the group thing. Although, I can’t say I wouldn’t try it. But what always interested me was bondage. I don’t claim to understand it, but I’m intrigued by it.” She took in a deep breath and let it out slowly.
Her hands were grasped tightly together.

Adrian noticed everything. A twitch of a muscle was a clue when he was pushing his partner toward her limit. Emma had the most expressive eyes, sensual and innocent, but defiant too.

His groin tightened again and he clenched his teeth. It had been too long since he fucked a sweet sub, drew every ounce of pleasure from her until she moaned in ecstasy. To have a sub willing to surrender, willing to allow him to push her beyond her limits was what he needed badly. Could he have a woman in a vanilla-only relationship? “You have a question? You look confused. Have you not seen a ménage before?”

“I’ve not watched one before. I was wondering if a Dom has more than one submissive?”

He smiled. “Depends whether he wants to be exclusive or not.”

“We’ll show you Dark Odyssey before it gets crowded,” Cynthia said.

VIRTUS SAGA: THE PLEDGE by Laura Tolomei

THE PLEDGE by Laura Tolomei

Virtus Saga Book 5

At the end of the road, only one promise–to be as one whilst remaining three.

If this love you can’t do without is another aspect of power, it’s also the most volatile one, never stable, always uncontrollable. It can turn to hate quicker than white Virt becoming black. Virtus

While love and passion rise, enemies and misunderstandings become stronger. While resolves strengthen, the world and its nightmares stand in the way until one thing, and one alone, will save them–the pledge.

And to those who never thought Ylianor would make it in Duncan and Chris's hearts, at least not the way she made it in their bed, here's news for you:

“Princess, for you I have two words alone—thank you.” He uttered them softly. “Thank you for being in my head, in my heart, in my spirit, my life. Thank you for the constant sharing. Thank you for the love and for having believed in it far more than I ever did. Thank you for having waited for me to come round to how immensely I love you. Thank you for putting up with my…insufferable lover, as you call him.” His wide grin took them both in. “Mostly, thank you for always being there as your own woman, never a submissive slave. You are our master, the one who teaches and gives us new strength every time your spirit breathes on us. You are our deep-rotted core, the one without whom we wouldn’t exist or be where we are today. You have made all this possible, so again I can only thank you. I…no…” He glanced at Chris and received a silent go ahead. “We can’t live without you.”

He strode toward his bag on the floor by the stone fireplace and took out his flogger. She tensed as he flicked his hand to allow her to hear the sound of the tails whooshing through the air. “Do you have a safe word, my pet?”

“Marshal.”

He positioned himself behind her and trailed the flogger over her backside. “Explain why that word holds significance?” He smacked her ass with a hard hit to test her limits.

“I’m a U.S. Marshal in Texas.” She groaned. “Supervisory Deputy to be exact.”

He ran the flogger over her bottom again to tease her. “Is that why the submissive role appeals to you, because of the job you hold?”

“It feels wonderful to give up the control I carry in my day-to-day life.” She moaned as he issued another hit. “And I enjoy being punished.”

He’d already known she enjoyed pain play. Madame Eve had sent him an extensive list of her limits, but he preferred learning for himself where those limits were drawn. “How long have you lived the BDSM lifestyle?”

“Five years.” She squeaked as he delivered a hard hit on her back then let the tails of the flogger tickle down the sweet cheeks of her ass.

“But you haven’t had a lifestyle Dom?”

“I—” She paused. “I’d prefer not to discuss it.”

Unacceptable. He hit hard twice. She bowed her head and cringed. “I didn’t ask what you preferred. Answer the question.”

She breathed deep as he hit lightly along her thighs. “I did have someone, but not anymore.”

“Would he be jealous that I’m your Dom tonight?”

“I’d imagine he would be.” She gasped when he flogged her on the shoulders and continued down her back.

“I suppose then, I’ll need to leave my mark on you for all to see, so they’re well aware who you belong to now.”

Chapter One

Siga, Imperial Province of Rome

Claudius Ovidius weaved a silent path through the darkened halls of The Cave, his eyes narrowing as he strained to see beneath the muted light. Fire flickered from the oil lamps scattered about the room, causing erotic shadows to dance along the walls.

Breathy moans and stilted sighs—the sounds of decadence and pleasure—echoed throughout the chambers, mingling with the low hum of music from the strings of the lituus.

Lust and pleasure were the sensuous delights to be found in The Cave, an exclusive club for those who would pay well to succumb to such temptations. Claudius was a member, although no longer a frequent visitor. Not since almost a year ago had he set foot within these walls, not since a beguiling beauty had blossomed into womanhood to haunt his every thought.

He drew in a breath, the perfume of desire and lovemaking dragging slowly through his lungs. Claudius still did not know why he’d come to this place, what had compelled him to leave the sanctuary of his villa and seek out the company of another, a stranger. He reasoned he could no longer deny his needs simply because he was obsessed with a woman he should not want, and could not have.

It would seem it did not matter where he took himself, however, whether it be his home or this place—for Olivia Septinius’ visage still found purchase within the dark corners of his mind, the only place where he allowed himself to explore every wanton fantasy he entertained of her. Even now, if he but closed his eyes, so easily he could conjure skin the color of shimmering copper, eyes a deep, dark mahogany, and lips seemingly stained by the fruit of a pomegranate.

Olivia was a beguiling, enticing beauty, and as his gaze slipped through the chambers, every single woman in the space paled in comparison to her. He frowned.

All except one.

Desire thickened the blood pumping, pulsing through his veins, and Claudius squinted against the harshness of the darkness as he crept closer to the woman who now claimed his attention. Maybe it was a shadow of his imagination, another tempting vision come to haunt him. Maybe. But Claudius doubted, however, for the heat flaring in his gut could only be ignited by one.

Her face was hidden behind a golden mask, the lush, winding curves of her body were not, however. She was draped in a shimmering stola, which appeared golden in the light, the translucent material revealed every sensuous, decadent curve of her womanly figure.

Though her face was obscured, Claudius knew the woman who stood before him, wandering through the halls of this forbidden place—a place that should have been forbidden to her, for she did not belong. His gaze flickered about the narrow corridor and his expression hardened upon glimpsing the lustful attentions of the men who watched her pass, their covetous eyes openly revealing the desires of their bodies.

Jealousy.

An emotion so wholly foreign to him, clawed through his entire body, scorching him hot and raw as burning coals. With angry strides, he closed the distance between him and the masked beauty. The woman’s eyes widened the moment he halted before her to clamp one hand around her arm. Not a single word was spoken as he dragged her into an empty corner where the two of them could neither be seen nor heard.

“You do not belong here, Olivia,” Claudius bit out the moment he had her alone.

He was grateful she did not feign surprise or pretend ignorance—as if somehow he was mistaken of her identity—because his darkening mood would not have been able to suffer it.

“And you do?” she queried, her head tilting to the side, sending several tendrils of hair whispering across her bare shoulder. Claudius followed one innocent lock as it settled beneath her breast, drawing his gaze to the berry-ripe bud puckering against her garment.

His hand curled tighter around her arm, as the heat in his belly dipped lower to harden the already swelling length of his manhood.

“How is it you belong here any more than I do?” she demanded, her eyes brimming with outrage.

He stared down at her, incredulous. She mistakenly assumed he spoke of her status—that somehow he believed she should not be welcome because of what she’d once been.

A former slave, Olivia was now a wealthy landowner in her own right and as such, entitled to the privileges of her station. Yet, if that had not been enough to gain entrance into the club, that she was also the provincial regent’s adopted daughter would have been more than sufficient.

“You mistake my words,” he replied. “I speak not of your status, but of your virtue.” He cast his arm wide to encompass the breadth of the chambers. “The Cave provides sanctuary to men and women of experience who desire pleasure of all kinds. This is certainly no place for a virgin.”

Claudius expected to be treated to her indignation, the blush of innocence upon her cheeks befitting the countenance of a virgin.

What he did not expect was for her lips to dip into a mocking frown, and her eyes to flash with censure, even as they seemed to gleam with the barest hint of seduction.

“And what would you know of my virtue, Claudius Ovidius? A man who has known me since I was but a child, but spoke to me not when I was a slave, and barely since, now that I have become his equal. Your friendship with my mother is why you even deign to acknowledge me.” Her narrowed gaze sharpened on him. “So tell me, what is it you truly know of my virtue, when you do not even know me?”

The righteous anger trembling through her voice ignited the fury that had been simmering in his blood from the moment he’d recognized her. But it was her eyes, the haughty frigid glare that she treated him to, daring him to challenge her, which shredded the last vestiges of his patience.

Still holding her arm, he seized the other, and in a single motion he pinned her against the wall, deeper into the darkened corner, until their bodies were fully obscured by the heavy shadows.

“I know you well, Olivia Septinius.” His breath blasted hot against her cheeks causing her skin to flush a deep crimson. Claudius spoke the truth, even as Olivia’s words rang true. He had not given Olivia even the most fleeting of glances, but not because she’d once been a slave. It was because he had known her as a girl, on the cusp of womanhood, but a girl nonetheless.

His gaze flitted over her and he was forced to bite back a sharp curse. But she was a girl no more and had not been one in some years. At the age of twenty-two, Olivia had matured into an undeniable beauty, and in recent years, he had noticed, although he pretended not to. But he could pretend no more.

“You may think all I have done is ignore you, but you are wrong.” He inched closer until only a hairsbreadth separated their bodies. “I know you, Olivia, which is why I know you have come here as an innocent virgin. Now why it is you have come, I do not know. What I do know is that it is past time for you to leave.” He withdrew from her, and started to turn so he could usher her from this place and see her safely home, but her next words stilled him, firmly rooting him to the spot where he stood.

“You do not know me,” she insisted, vehemence ringing through her voice. “I am no virgin and I refuse to leave until I have what it is I came here for.”

He twisted back around, his steely glare pinning her to the wall. “And please tell me, what is it you have come here for?”

“The same things as you,” she shot back, her expression defiant, and Claudius had to will himself not to shake her.

“Little girl, do not play games with me.”

Her chin lifted. “That is your problem, Claudius. You do not seem to realize that I am no longer a girl.”

“Come sit with me.” Hands on her hips, he sat in a large chair with wooden arms. He leaned forward to kiss her belly and then patted his thighs. “Sit to face me, drape your legs under the arm rests.”

She threw back her head to laugh. “You are amazingly inventive.”

He winked at her. “I want to see your eyes and mouth and breasts and this black cat,” he grabbed a handful of her bush, “as we eat.”

She settled down upon him, wiggled to get comfortable and in the process, made him laugh. “As long as I may enjoy you as well,” she said as she ran her hands down his hard chest to his groin and nestled her fingers into his neat little patch of curls.

He inhaled. “Do as you wish, my sweet. I am yours.” He took a strawberry from the cart and held it before her mouth. “Open your talented lips, bella.”

She did as she was told, ate and then he produced another berry. He took a piece of pineapple, gave it to her, licked juice from her lips and then broke off a piece of a croissant to pop into her mouth. She did the same for him, licking crumbs from her fingers and his lower lip until she saw that between her legs, his cock grew hungry too.

She stroked him from root to tip. “You have the stamina of a ten men.” She grinned widely at him and made her eyes dance. “Ten men I’ve never known existed.”

He laughed as well but his hand stilled hers. “Ten men I would like to ensure you never meet.”

Her gaiety died. “We won’t discuss tomorrow, agreed?”

It was the first real demand she’d made of him. If he interpreted her words to mean she was beginning to care for him too much, well, then so be it. She was. She wouldn’t hide it. She would be honest. That same honesty that would serve her well tomorrow when she would do without him for the rest of her life.

“Bella, tomorrow we can—”

“No.” She tried to stand.

He seized her arms and pulled her down.

She looked at him, rampant sorrow for what she would lose tomorrow making her bold. “I want you to make love to me once more before I leave.” She took his penis and began to stroke him with greedy determination.

He seized her wrist. “Stop. I want you,” he ground out. “But we have no more condoms.”

She cursed now—and began to rise again.

“No!” he shouted at her. “I thought this would happen. We do need each other so badly.”

“The little store in the lobby,” she was grasping for a solution, circling her thumb over the moist slit of his member, “you could call and have them bring up a package.”

“All are sold. I asked.”

She rolled her head back and groaned. “Unbelievable.”

“But I have a solution if you let me try it,” he sounded like a little boy wanting a treat he should not have.

Whatever his idea was, Reggie knew enough about his sexual imagination now to suspect it would be racy and wonderful. “Tell me.”

He reached to the cart and lifted a silver dome. Inside was a bowl of lemons.

She blinked. “I don’t understand.”

“A medieval practice.”

“Lemons?” Her eyes went wide.

~Excerpt~

Josie Harper’s nerves were rattled. She’d never expected to have to hire someone to see her fantasies met. Sometimes, though, life doesn’t turn out how one expects it.

There had been plenty of boyfriends, lovers, and even friends with benefits in her life. None, though, could satisfy her. Not only in life, but sexually. Something had always been missing, something she needed to find. Those were the reasons she flew from Dallas to Las Vegas and why she stood in the elevator at the Castillo Resort and Hotel. The night may drain her savings account, one she’d added to over the twenty-five years of her life, but it didn’t matter. Not anymore. Sick of feeling unhappy, tired of not experiencing fulfillment, she’d been left with no other choice.

The question needed to be answered, Is BDSM meant for me?

She’d looked into her options for her self-discovery experiment, and had come across all sorts of avenues. Should she join a club with others who lived the BDSM lifestyle? She’d run across personal ads in the local newspaper and even classes offering to teach novices. But Madame Eve’s 1NightStand solution offered the most privacy.

Josie’s interests…well, she hadn’t quite figured them out yet. The idea of being dominated appealed to her. Images of being bound to a table while being spanked created heat between her thighs. But were these just fantasies or did she want to live the lifestyle?

Josie’d spent a good part of a day filling out a questionnaire given to her by 1NightStand detailing what she wanted, and even needed, from the experience. Had informed the woman of things she’d do and not do so the Dom would understand her limits.

Days after she’d faxed the questionnaire back, Josie received an email from Madame Eve confirming she’d made a match for her. The illusive Madame Eve found her a man to lead her into undiscovered territory?

It appeared she had. Was she ready to do this now? Push all her reservations aside and have the naughty sex which only lived in her dreams? Doubt nagged her. What else could be expected? The situation was new to her and not what anyone would call normal. She’d come for a reason though. She couldn’t let unease make her act stupidly.

She pushed away the fear and straightened her shoulders. The email stated for her to go to the fourth floor, room 412. They’d have complete privacy since the floor would be free of guests, and the room soundproofed, but a telephone would be available in case she became uneasy and needed a safety net.

As the elevator came to a stop, she stood for so long she wondered if she’d lost her nerve. None of that.

Jessica’s Salon was a fixture in Lucky Springs. Some had tried to open competing places, but they never lasted. People were just used to coming here. Her great aunt had owned it and passed it down. Every day, Jessica styled hair and listened to all the news. Part therapist, part friend, and part beauty genius—she loved it!

This morning was her favorite client, the one who actually wanted to hear what was going on with Jessica. Her cousin, Cassie. She’d been home for six months straight and showed no sign of going back to her nomadic ways to take pictures. A handsome neighbor had gotten wandering Cassie to stay put.

“Hey, Jess!” Cassie grinned from ear-to-ear as she slipped into the salon before the official opening time. Cassie was always smiling now.

“Hi, Cassie. You look like the cat that got the rat.”

“Or three.” Cassie hugged her cousin and headed for the shampoo station. “Hi, Andrew!”

Jessica had completely forgotten Andrew was coming in early to help his boyfriend, Stuart, with inventory. Andrew was the best stylist and her best friend in Louisiana. She’d met him in beauty school and hired him as soon as she had her own salon. He brought along Stuart. The cute and serious man managed the office, payroll, ordering and inventory. Most of the women loved having cute, younger men fussing over their hair. Their husbands felt better knowing the pair was gay. It worked out.

“Hey, Cassie!” Andrew winked from the back room.

Jessica caught an extra bounce in Cassie’s mood today. “What’s up?” she asked automatically as she shampooed Cassie’s soft brown locks.

“Nothing new here. Life’s great. What about you?” Cassie stared up at Jess.

“Same old here, too. The guys are doing inventory.”

“You don’t look okay.” Cassie toweled off her hair and moved to the big chair.

“I’m fine. When you’re about to turn thirty-five, we’ll see how you take it.” Jessica combed out Cassie’s hair and saw the smile in the mirror. “Okay, fine, maybe you’re so happy and in love with Dominic that you won’t care.”

“Sorry. I wish you were this happy. So it’s your birthday? Or is the problem that Frank hasn’t been around?” They acted like sisters, and the honesty between them was refreshing.

Normally, Jessica had to support and sympathize with clients, whether she agreed or not. But with Cassie, Jessica couldn’t hide her real feelings. “Both. Neither. Frank never made any huge promises to come back. But I always thought by now he’d be back.” Frank was her high school boyfriend, but he’d wanted college and to take the world by storm with his best friend, Eric.

Jessica just wanted to cut hair and stay in small town Lucky Springs forever. Her family, her friends and life were all right here. Frank planned to make millions and move back to run his business from Lucky Springs. But times had been tough, and now those dreams felt silly and idealistic. “I’m an idiot.”

“No, you’re not!” Cassie jumped in. “Frank has come back every year, sometimes twice. To see you! He’s got it just as bad as you do. The economy is still tough. Lucky Springs is doing okay, but the factory is slowing down. No layoffs but still. Not that that is an excuse. Frank should’ve moved back years ago. Has he called or anything?”

Jessica shook her head.

Andrew slid out from the back room and hugged Jessica from behind. “No and he’s crazy, if you ask me. That man might be hot, but he doesn’t know what he’s got.”

Smiling, Jess let her head rest on Andrew’s strong shoulder. He was sexy with blond spiky hair, blue eyes and a winning smile. Stuart was more classically handsome with brown hair, but the pair always teased her, hitting on her as if it were a dare for her to say yes. Some days, she wanted to call their bluff just to see what they’d do. They were so sexy. She loved them, knew them and they were here. To watch them together would be amazing. “What is it about the one that got away?” she asked.

Cassie shrugged. “Until now, I was always the one going away so I can’t answer that. But you’ve dated other guys. It’s not as if you’ve been in a convent for fifteen years. Maybe Frank’s pal Eric is the problem? I don’t remember him being a jerk in high school, but swinging single men in the big city…”

“No, Eric is a great guy. He always gives Frank and me plenty of time alone in town, but he’s great to hang out with. I had a crush on him in junior high. If Frank ever dumped me, I might go after Eric but they’re always together so it’d get weird. What am I doing wrong?” Jess hated it. All these hot men, and she slept alone.

“Nothing!” Cassie and Andrew said in unison.

“You’re the hottest single woman in Lucky Springs.” Andrew pointed her toward the mirror. “Look at that sexy mocha skin, glossy brown hair with those auburn highlights done by yours truly. And you have green eyes that men get lost in. It’s not you. What can we do to make you feel better?”

“I don’t know. A one-night-stand won’t fix it. I want to feel sexy and desired, not cheap and used. I want someone to pay attention to me. I just want to enjoy my birthday and not think about everything. Great sex and to feel beautiful. Is that too much to ask?” Jess stared in the mirror. She wasn’t a bad package.

“Stuart and I are always available.” Andrew squeezed her waist.

“I wouldn’t ask you to sacrifice like that.” Jess kissed his cheek.

“We might be able to fix this.” Cassie smiled.

Jess held up her hands. “No, not your boyfriend’s brother. I don’t want charity.”

“You’re too hot to be labeled charity.” Andrew nudged her into the chair.

Cassie looked at Andrew. “Not him. I think we need to tell her.”

Andrew lifted an eyebrow. “You’re sure?”

“What? Tell me what?” Jess’ hopes lifted. Maybe Frank was coming in? She refused to ask out loud. No doubt about it, Jess needed to wean herself off the dream.

Cassie sat in the next chair. “I got mixed up with Dom because of these parties he has. He was my neighbor and attractive, but when I moved back, I heard a lot of noise and went over to check. They’re into the group thing—sort of. And I got pulled into it, too. Way hot.”

“Parties? Group?” Jessica’s brain spun, but her body tingled. “You sleep with just random groups?”

“No, not random. It’s not like that.” Cassie blushed. “Just Dom and Monty and Alex and sometimes Ham.”

“Wow.” Jessica swallowed. “Sometimes Ham?”

“He’s a little kinkier than I am, but I’m sure he’ll find the right girl. You’re not right for him, but I think we could arrange something. Plenty of guys at these parties would love to make your birthday memorable.”

“Not your guys?” Jessica shook her head. Was she really thinking about this as an option? Cassie was serious. If she were lying, she’d be giggling by now. Cassie wasn’t this good at practical jokes.

“No, those are all mine. Ham is unique. But the other three, no other girls for them. But we still do the party thing once a month. It’s really hot to watch and be watched.”

“You’re serious?” Jess looked up at Andrew. “You know about this?”

“Yes. It’s not like I go every month. But Stuart and I have been known to go just to show off and watch. There are hot men. We like looking at girls, too.”

“Sure. But how is it I don’t know about this? I know everything that happens in this town! People spill their guts in these chairs. Why didn’t you tell me?” She smacked them both on the arms.

“Stuart and I have offered to help you personally. Repeatedly.” Andrew folded his arms.

Cassie gave her cousin a look but let that comment go. “I didn’t know until I moved back. It’s a big secret so the more conservative of the town don’t freak. It’s not that big, really. I know it’s not normal, but it works for us. Not that I’m suggesting you need that every day. But one time with a group of men just focused on pleasing you… It’d be a birthday you’ll want to remember.”

“Pleasing me?” Jess pushed away thoughts of porn with demanding men.

Andrew leaned down. “Exactly. There are men who love sex and love to get women off. You deserve it!”

“I couldn’t do that at a party with people watching.” Jessica rejected the idea on her reputation alone. The grandmothers of Lucky Springs came here to get their hair set. They could ruin her weekly revenue.

“Okay, fine. We can set up a private party. That’s how it started for me. I think four men would be good. Three can get the job done, but it’s your birthday.” Cassie made it sound as if they were ordering enough cake.

Jess took a few deep breaths. “Who are these men? I don’t want to know. This isn’t about love, Cassie. It’s about sex and birthday fun. I don’t want to pick men. This is insane. How will I know it’s safe? I mean, will they just show up at my house?” Jess got up and grabbed her scissors. “I need to trim your hair before the regulars arrive. Thanks for the offer, but it’s too much for me.”

“Don’t say that. You’ve had a bit of a dry spell.” Andrew leaned on the counter. “What if you’re blindfolded? You won’t see them. We’ll pick the guys. It’ll be really safe and mysterious. Super hot.”

Cassie smiled wide. “Definitely. And they’ll never tell you. These are guys from the party who will keep the secret. They’ll play by the rules, always use protection and want to please. We can trust them.”

“But I won’t know who they are. I’ll be blindfolded. This is nuts. That’s not safe. What has Dom done to you?” Jess asked.

“So many wonderful things. I’m trying to share the goodness. Just not my men.” Cassie shrugged.

“Stuart!” Jessica called.

He stepped out from the office with clipboard in hand. “What do you need?”

“Do you hear this? Do you know about this?” she demanded.

A smile tugged at his lips. “Obviously, I don’t let Andrew go to parties alone. I think it’d be good for you. If you’re not sure about the safety, have Cassie and Dom chaperone the private party. She can get video just in case you ever want to see it. If you’re at all curious, you’ll like it more than you think.”

“Sure, my cousin wants to watch me in a group sex romp, blindfolded, and she’ll record it.” Jess tapped the scissors to the back of her hand. The pinch told her it was no dream.

Cassie spun in the chair. “Remember Kitty and Violet from junior high? My friends who sort of drifted away?”

“Sure,” Jess replied.

“I’ve seen them together, with the hubby. They’re a three-way since forever. Watching you have a great birthday won’t bother me. I’m sure the men will be worth watching. That’s what I’m into watching. So quit being a prude and let Andrew and I set this up. Blindfold and lots of condoms and lube. Any other requests?” She winked at Andrew.

“Sure, tie me down so I can’t change my mind.” She threw her hands up in the air.

“I was going to suggest that.” Andrew nodded to Stuart.

“Sounds good to me,” Stuart added.

If Stuart thought it was safe, it wouldn’t be that extreme…and Jess wasn’t a prude. Her brain argued, but her body liked the idea. “Back up a second. Being blindfolded you want some sense of security. How is Cassie safety? Four men. She’s no match for them if something goes weird.”

“They aren’t into force. These aren’t BDSM parties. Stop being paranoid.” Cassie used her stern voice.

“If Dom and you are there, to make sure it’s all safe. And it’s in your house. Fine.” Jess got busy cutting hair. She needed to focus on reality because what she’d just agreed to felt like someone else’s life.

“You’ll thank us later.” Andrew gave her a kiss on the cheek and followed Stuart into the back. No doubt, they were deciding whom to cast in Jess’ birthday orgy. The idea alone aroused her.

“Trust me when I say you do not wish to please your future husband.”

Her brows lifted. “Of course I do—”

“No—you—do—not,” he bit out each word, his voice rougher this time. She was so close that he could touch her, she was so close that every pore within his body absorbed her essence and strained for more. He almost gasped with half desire, half surprise, when his cock swelled then hardened within the confines of his bracca. He’d not experienced such pure and instant desire for a woman in so long that it shocked him, it scared him.

“What is it that he does that I should fear?” she asked in a quiet voice, tinged with the very emotion she’d just named.

A war raged within him. Gaius longed to tell her the truth so she would end this betrothal and be done with Cicero, but the other part of himself told him this was none of his business, the affairs of others were not his concern. In the end, his sense of honor won out, as misguided and misplaced as it was.

“Your intended enjoys inflicting pain upon others. He derives a sense of pleasure from the suffering of others.”

Her eyes widened.

“Now do you understand why I tell you that you do not wish to please your future husband?”

She nodded, but her next words told him that she did not.

“And you think I would be repulsed by this?”

His eyes narrowed. “If you are not then you should be.”

“But I have never experienced such a thing.” Her gaze bore into him. “How do you know I would not enjoy his desires when I do not even know myself?”

“Nivea—”

“Before I compromise my betrothal, I would know what I am getting into. I wish you to take me to this place called The Cave so that I may see for myself—”

“No—”

“Then show me what it is Flavius does to women—”

“It is not something to be shown.”

She tilted her head to the side, her hair tumbling over a bare shoulder, and he knew the moment his words found purchase. “Then would you do these things to me?”

“Absolutely not.”

“But you have done these things to women before, have you not?”

Gaius pierced her with a dark glare, his thoughts, his emotions oscillating between the desire to stalk out of there, and the need to shake her until she saw reason.

“I know of you Gaius Ovidius, just as I have known of the whisperings of my intended. Until two days ago I thought them to be rumors, and so I ignored them. But no longer. It took me two days to call upon you, because I spent those days asking questions of you. I know your desires are the same as Flavius’—”

“They are not the same,” he blurted out before he realized what he’d just admitted to, before he had the temerity to stop himself.

She ignored him. “I also know you wish to retire soon, that you seek to purchase land to farm, but you have too few coins to do this as the second son of Claudius Ovidius. I could see that you have all the denarii you need to cultivate your own farm.”

“If I stud for you.”

She started at the sneer upon his face and the brusqueness of his voice, but she was not cowed. “If you instruct me on what pleases my intended.”

“Why not ask him yourself?” he demanded, even though he already knew why. Matters of the marriage bed were never discussed, and certainly never broached at the time of betrothal. Once wed, one simply suffered in silence or took a lover.

“You know why,” she said in answer to his question. “Besides, as I just said, I would know now before it is too late if this is a marriage I can endure. This arrangement stands to benefit us both,” she pressed, her voice low.

Gaius was so tempted. He was so tempted to agree to this. Nivea had done well in asking of him. As the second son he stood to inherit nothing, the small fortune he’d amassed having come from his time in service to the Roman military. And still it was not enough for the plot of land he desired to purchase. He knew well of Flavius Cicero’s desires—if anyone could teach her, prepare her, it was him.

He shook his head as if he could rid himself of the thought, surprised he’d just considered her offer. It was madness to even contemplate such a thing.

“For many reasons, I cannot agree to this,” he said finally, firmly.

“And those would be?” she demanded to know.

“Most importantly, if Cicero ever learned of this, he would be furious, your reputation would suffer and he would end your betrothal immediately.”

“That is my concern alone.” Nivea nodded. “What else?”

He hesitated because he’d not expected such a response. Only then did he realize these many reasons were in fact only two.

“You said there were several reasons,” Nivea hedged, as if reading his mind. “I wish to know why else you object.”

He’d not been prepared to reveal his other reason, but as he met Nivea’s waiting gaze he found himself wanting to give her the truth. He could have lied, but he did not, he could not as he said finally, “It has been a long time since I’ve lain with a woman.”

Her eyes rounded and her lips parted in surprise. “Do you not desire women?”

Again, he could have lied, but for some reason he found he could only give those searching golden eyes the truth. “I desire women.”

“If you think you shall not please me, again that is my concern alone,” she said quietly into the strained silence that now hovered between them.

He inched closer, the heat radiating from her body surrounding him as he raked her with his gaze, so that she did not mistake his next words. “If I took you to my bed, I would please you,” he replied, his voice just as low as hers had been, and when her tongue slid nervously across her lips, he knew she understood.

His words were not spoken out of pride or because he wished to boast. It was simply the truth. If he took this woman to his bed he would do everything within his power to see that she was well pleased, that she was well satisfied.

“If everything you have said is true then I implore you to consider my offer,” Nivea said finally.

When he opened his mouth to protest, she shook her head.

“Just consider it. Whatever you decide, I would have your answer in person. I would have you look me in the eye when you deliver the news.”

“And how long do I have to weigh your offer?”

“Since I am set to wed within the month…” She smiled, though it was only the slightest curving of her lips and it did not reach her eyes. “I would have your answer within the week.”

After working in a security company for thirteen years, force of habit had her scanning the castle walls for security cameras or spotlights. No cameras, minimal lighting, no motion sensors. She hoped the park had a better system in place inside, considering the castle was supposed to have fifteenth- and sixteenth-century furnishings.

Why did the castle have to be closed today? Just her luck. She walked up the drawbridge and tried the door and sure enough it was locked. Crap. Maybe it wasn’t so easy to break into a castle.

Walking around the building, she ran her hand along the rough stone. Five hundred years old. What would it have been like to live here centuries ago? What was it going to be like to entertain here? She hadn’t practiced in over two weeks since she’d shipped her harp. Even though the audiences for the dinner shows would be small, her stomach knotted up as if she was about to perform at a huge symphony hall.

She was three-quarters around the building when she discovered a small alcove and a wooden service door at the end of the narrow walkway. Dana tried this door and it opened. She shook her head. Very poor security. She should mention this to Jack and make some recommendations while she was here.

A narrow curved stairway led up. The castle was huge and she preferred to know the layout of the place since the first show would be in a couple of days. One flight up opened onto a great hall. A few tapestries hung on the walls between giant windows and heavy dark chairs and one table took up one wall. They’d need more tables to seat guests. There must be another room.

Dana crossed the hall to another doorway that led to a different stairway and was about to climb, when she saw a flickering glow from the darkness below. Fire? Could the castle be on fire? Wiring or the furnishings could be. She trotted down the circular stone stairs.

Darkness crept in around her except for the golden, flickering light from the basement. Walking through another doorway, she thought she heard voices but she wasn’t sure. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up.

As she rounded a stone partition, the room brightened. Flames flickered within a half dozen wrought iron sconces, a fire burned in a small stone fireplace. The room smelled of sweet burning wood and damp stone. At the far wall two people hovered in shadows. Dana remained in her circle of darkness at the bottom of the stairs, unable to take her eyes away from the sight.

The woman was naked, her wrists and ankles bound with straps that hung from the ceiling. Her arms and legs were spread wide in a V shape. As Dana took a closer look, she saw the woman was cradled in a narrow hammock rigging that supported her back and bottom. Her pussy and anus lay open wide and metal clamps were attached to her nipples. Dana winced at the distended tips protruding from the tight clamps. The woman was also wearing a blindfold. The other person, wearing a hooded robe, was male. She could tell by his bare legs and feet. His back was facing Dana.

A rush of heat, then cold crept through her. Wrapping her arms around her waist, her first instinct was to escape and call for help. Then she stepped back and searched for a weapon, planning to do some damage to the guy if the woman needed help. Instead, Dana froze at the bottom of the stairs. Attacking this man was not a good idea if the woman was a willing participant. She would watch long enough to make sure the woman was okay.

There were people who got into this kinky stuff. Why this woman would allow this man to do these things, Dana couldn’t fathom. “More, slave?” the man in the robe asked the woman.

The woman nodded. “Yes, Master, if it pleases you.” His fingers stroked the narrow thatch of dark hair between her legs, avoiding the glistening folds of her pussy. The woman squirmed and tried lifting her hips.

Chapter One

The room was redolent with the scent of the cinnamon candles. Dani Maguire ducked her head, trying to find a breath of clean air. Alan loved the scent of cinnamon. Even insisted she drop cinnamon-scented crystals in the water when she bathed. But she’d reached a point where the aroma of cinnamon nearly made her gag.

Or maybe it was Alan Powell who made her gag. Two years in this relationship and try as she might, lately she couldn’t seem to find the key to make it work. He was a loving Dom, demanding but considerate, yet something deep inside her kept rebelling.

Still kneeling on the floor, hands manacled behind her, lips aching from stretching around the girth of Alan’s cock, she wondered where they could go from here. She didn’t love him. The sex was still great but she no longer found it…fulfilling. And that presented a problem.

Alan bent to unlock the handcuffs and used his hands beneath her elbows to help her rise. His tall, lean body dwarfed her small one, surrounding her with his masculinity, a sensation she usually enjoyed. But lately everything seemed to be just a little off.

“I worked you hard tonight,” he murmured, long fingers brushing her hair back from her face. “I’m going to draw a hot bath for you, with those salts that you like, and bathe you just the way you always enjoy it.”

But did she enjoy it? Did it please her? Or had it become an irritant? What she really wanted was to bathe him.

Get over it, Dani. You’re just going through a phase.

But was she?

She stayed in the same position until Alan lifted her and carried her to the bathroom, lowering her gently into the fragrant bath. The heated water stung the skin of her ass where Alan had disciplined her earlier. She’d been less than enthusiastic about using her mouth on him, and although she’d done her best to hide it, he’d been all too aware of it. Bending her over the bed, he’d used the thin quirt on her, striping her buttocks with ten well-placed strikes.

When he finished, he’d lowered her to the floor, held her mouth open with his fingers and worked his cock back and forth across her tongue. Somehow she’d dredged up a semblance of desire and given him the release he needed. She knew he wasn’t happy but when he finished he hadn’t said a word. Simply bent down to kiss her and went to draw the bath.

“Just relax,” Alan murmured, squeezing the bath sponge. “You know I’ll take care of you. Don’t I always?”

Yes, he did. But somehow over the past few months she found herself enjoying it less and less.

“Dani?” His voice sharpened. “I asked you a question.”

She blinked her eyes. “Yes, Master. You do.”

That wasn’t the question she needed to answer though. She needed to understand why that care had suddenly become so suffocating. Why she had begun to resent it in little ways.

One of his large hands cupped the back of her head, bracing her body as he skimmed the sponge over her breasts. She closed her eyes and tried to relax at the light-as-a-feather touch. A pinch on one nipple startled her and her eyes flew open. Alan’s eyes were staring directly into hers, a strange look playing over his face.

“Tell me to pinch your nipples again,” he commanded.

She swallowed. “Pinch my nipples again, Master. Please.”

He took each one in turn between thumb and forefinger and squeezed them hard enough that lust shot straight to her core, making the inner muscles of her cunt flutter.

“Well, that hasn’t changed.” His voice had an oddly hard edge to it.

AFTERLIFE by Joey W. Hill

AFTERLIFE - Book IV in Joey W. Hill's Knights of the Board Room Series.

Rachel gave up seeking a Master years ago. After a failed marriage and terrible tragedy, she's walled her soul against going down that dangerous path again. Then Jon joins her yoga class. He's thirteen years younger than she, but his Dominant nature threatens her shields from the moment she recognizes it. Not only does he understand what her body wants - he knows what her soul craves.

Part of the five-man executive team of Kensington & Associates, Jon uses his calm, philosophical nature to defuse volatile acquisition negotiations. He can compel opponents to willingly surrender when he draws the sword that closes the deal. As a sexual Dominant, he employs that same expertise. A spiritually-driven Master who enjoys connecting with a woman's soul, he wins her utter submission with his skills. But with Rachel, it goes beyond that. She's the submissive his own soul has always hungered to have, and he won't hesitate to use his talents, as well as that of the other four K&A men, to claim her.

This is a Knights of the Board Room book, but like all the books in this series, it can stand alone. Every book does involve the full cast of "Knights", though, so you might get a few minor (and very tempting) spoilers about previous stories (wink).

Chapter One

“I better get a good report on you today, Sergeant. Any whining and you’ll get your ass blistered soon as we get out of here. Maybe sooner.”

Rachel sucked in a surprised breath as Dana’s white cane shot out toward Peter’s unprotected shin with impressive accuracy. Despite his formidable size, Peter sidestepped it with practiced grace, tossing Rachel a grin as he slid an arm around Dana’s waist, drawing her to his side. Closing his hand over her slim fingers, he plucked the cane from her. “And I’d best hold onto this for you.”

“Chicken,” Dana retorted. She turned her face up to him. “Afraid a little blind girl’s going to take you down with a plastic stick.”

Rachel pressed her lips together against a smile as Peter used one arm and a quick move to hoist his petite fiancée over his shoulder. Though Dana threatened to dismember him in creative ways, he simply steadied her with one hand spread across her attractive bottom. When he hooked his thumb in one of the pockets of her snug jeans, that intimacy alone was enough to make Rachel ache. “Where do you want her?” he asked. His storm gray eyes lingered on Rachel’s face, his brow creasing thoughtfully as if he saw something there he shouldn’t.

Snapping her gaze away from the placement of that large hand, she nodded toward the usual cot for Dana’s physical therapy. Since she was standing at her corner desk in the therapy room, Rachel shuffled through her calendar, pretending to finish up some things before they got started.

In reality, she was breathing through that sharp twist in her lower belly, the one she recognized as yearning. It was a far-too-frequent feeling since Peter had started bringing Dana to her PT sessions. It wasn’t their teasing loveplay. They were being a little more blatant than usual today, but since they were engaged, it wasn’t unexpected. Their romantic vibes fairly oozed out over everyone around them. The only reaction it should have triggered from her was indulgent amusement, maybe a touch of motherly exasperation. But there was an additional component between them.

Most people would miss it, though they might pick up on something about Peter and Dana’s interactions that mesmerized or made them feel inexplicably uncomfortable. Unable to place what it was, they’d call it something else, or shrug it off as those engagement vibes. She’d done the same thing, but she’d known from the first she was fooling herself. Even after all these years of trying to mute her desire, she seemed to have a radar for it.

It was in the way Peter followed Dana’s movements, tracking her facial expressions, picking up everything she was feeling and anticipating it so well. He was as aware of Dana’s physical and emotional state as the woman herself. Probably more. Each word she spoke, every syllable of her body language, elicited some type of response from him. Pure, monitored attention.

Rachel had convinced herself men like that didn’t exist. Another of the many lies she’d told herself for way too long. When Peter made that sensual threat to blister his fiancee’s ass, the faint tinge under Dana’s mocha skin said she knew he’d live up to that promise. And she’d welcome it—as a reward, not punishment.

Their weekly visit was both the highlight and curse of Rachel’s week.

He was carting Dana back to the cot as if he was carrying a grain sack. “Got to get you back in shape, soldier. I expect you to wait on me hand and foot like a proper wife should. I’m running out of patience with this coddling.”

“I’ll be happy to put my fist or foot right where it’ll do you the most good,” Dana returned sweetly. She had her right elbow propped on Peter’s wide shoulder, holding herself up. Rachel noted she was guarding the left arm. They’d need to do extra work on that today. However, the stomach muscles were admirably strong.

Peter slid Dana off his shoulder and onto her feet, as smooth and gentle as if she were a porcelain doll, belying his words. It was in his face, every time he looked at the black woman who barely came up to his chin and yet had the force of personality to match his larger-than-life presence. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her. Except let her give up on herself, which Rachel knew was why he came to every session with her.

Dana wasn’t a complainer. She was always stoic and cheerful, such that Rachel was sure she and Peter were the only people who knew how hard these sessions were. Before the end of it, Dana would have her teeth gritted against pain, tears running down her face as she pushed it a little further. Like so many patients, she also waged a mental battle against despair, confronted with a body that would never be the same again.

Dana had been injured in Iraq, losing her sight, most of her hearing and some mobility and strength in her left side. Not only had she required multiple surgeries, she’d needed physical therapy to regain flexibility. PT was never easy, but Dana’s had been rougher than most because she’d battled post-traumatic stress disorder and its attendant deep depression for over a year, letting the already damaged muscles atrophy. That said, over the past three months, Dana had made tremendous progress. She was a strong, brave woman, but Rachel also knew a great deal of it had to do with the man who encouraged, bullied and stood by her, no matter what.

He’d bring her to the therapy area, but typically he’d return to the waiting room during the first part of the session, when Dana would insist she didn’t need babying. However, with uncanny timing, whenever the session reached its worst point, Peter was likely to wander back to see if Rachel wanted a soda from the vending machine. When she’d decline, he’d take a seat nearby with a magazine he wasn’t reading. Even without sight, Dana’s other senses would align on him like a rifle scope, and things would get better.

Like most healthcare professionals, Rachel knew family support for meaningful recovery was immeasurable. Fortunately for Dana, her fiancé was also very affluent, and he didn’t let her pride stand in the way of using his resources. He’d already facilitated a cochlear implant surgery that used enhanced hearing technology. It had reduced Dana’s hearing loss to a mild hardship, mostly exacerbated by her inability to see people’s faces as they spoke. The cosmetic surgery that had been done since they were engaged was handled by the best plastic surgeon in the country.

Peter Winston was part of top management at Kensington & Associates, one of Baton Rouge’s most prestigious corporations, a manufacturing and acquisitions concern. Since Rachel was sure Peter’s role as operations manager for all their domestic and overseas plants had to be a busy and difficult job, the fact he didn’t miss a single PT appointment spoke volumes to her. Despite Dana’s insistence that he didn’t need to be such a mother hen, there’d been days he’d flown back in from a job only for this, having to leave again that evening. It not only told Rachel how devoted he was to Dana, but that he knew, despite her spirited banter, how hard this was for the determined young woman.

“Why don’t you go away and flex your muscles for the nurses up front? Show them your tattoo. They can coo over you while Rachel and I get some real work done.”

“What if one of them wants to stroke my impressively large ego?”

“Give me back my cane.”

Chuckling, he bent and caught her mouth, which softened under his. Though Rachel stayed ostensibly occupied with her calendar, her ears caught his quiet admonition to behave and work hard, that he’d be close by. Dana’s serious response was a bare whisper Rachel nevertheless managed to hear.

“Yes, Master.”

She gripped the edge of her desk, hard enough that the rough underside cut her hand, but she bit her lip to keep from making a noise of distress. The cut was the least of it. Yes, she’d been sure for a while, but it was the first time she’d heard it confirmed so baldly. The painful vindication had her floundering in an appalling swamp of self-pity, envy and an old fury that welled up to choke her.

Damn it, Rachel, stop it.

To hear it, to know it existed in such a desirable form, didn’t just double her over in pain. It thrilled her with a charge of sensual lightning through her extremities. She’d have to ground the energy into the solid earth beneath her feet—or in this case, the beige tile floor—because it had nowhere else to go.

That had always worked in the past, but maybe it was how much she genuinely liked these two that made it more difficult to ignore the effect they had on her. From the moment they arrived for each appointment, she strained for every word between them, absorbed every touch and gesture, as if she was living vicariously through them, and maybe she was. Recently, she’d been waking from dreams that left her thighs damp with perspiration, her gown knotted up around her waist as if a man had pushed it there.

While Peter and Dana might keep those old demons awake and tormenting her, they hadn’t resurrected them. It wasn’t Peter who’d invaded her dreams. It was the man who’d referred Dana to Rachel’s PT practice.

Jon Forte.

* * * * *

When not doing physical therapy for the hospital, Rachel ran a small yoga studio. Jon had started attending her classes once a week almost a year ago. Because of his work schedule, he came to different classes, varying his attendance, but she suspected that was a good thing. If he was a dependable regular in any of them, that class probably would have had a mile-long waiting list for female attendees.

There was a different kind of beauty to him. Unlike Peter, who was a broad mountain of muscle, Jon had the build of a Baryshnikov, all compact strength. Though not overly tall at around five-ten, it made him quite a bit taller than Rachel’s five-three. His eyes reminded her of striated sodalite, the vivid blues infused with the fire of the earth that had created it. His hair was thick, black silk that feathered temptingly over his forehead.

Like everyone else in her class, she’d done a double-take the first time he spoke. Not only did he possess the velvet tones of a late night DJ, spinning languorous R&B tunes in the loneliest hours of night, but it was impossible to imagine arguing with him, doing anything to interrupt those fluid, resolute syllables from flowing over the skin like the reassuring brush of angel feathers.

He was always courteous, talking to each woman in a way that suggested he took a personal interest in her life and how her day was going. He had that still, attentive way about him as Peter did. If another male attended, he handled that interaction in a relaxed, friendly way, seamless male bonding amid a sea of estrogen.

He was a K&A management scion as well. Following impulse rather than good sense, she’d looked up articles on the company. Like Peter, he was one of the brilliant five-man team that ran K&A. They’d been given various nicknames in both the business and society pages, including the wunderkind, because of what they’d accomplished at a relatively young age in the manufacturing world.

However, one gossip columnist gave them a different name. Knights of the Boardroom. With the calculated indiscretion that a gossip columnist could dare, the reporter had noted they had a closely bonded intuition usually shared by fetuses in the womb. Another reason for the nickname was that they were well known for their support of charitable efforts, both with money and hands-on time. They’d been deeply involved in relief efforts for Katrina and supposedly always had personal bets running between them where the winnings went to the charity of the winner’s choice. In the pictures taken of them at different functions, she knew they were all handsome as sin, though her gaze always strayed to Jon’s face, and sometimes her fingers, slipping over the image with guilty shame at the girlish act.

With his mechanical aptitude and inventor’s spirit, Jon was called the “boy genius” of the group. He held dual financial and engineering degrees and already had multiple patents for innovative manufacturing processes and gadgets. He also had impressive diplomacy and negotiating skills, and was considered the calming yet irresistible influence of the group. Business rivals had dubbed him Kensington’s Archangel with grudging admiration.

Knowing he was an engineer and inventor explained why the knuckles of his long-fingered hands were often scraped, his palms calloused. She’d not only had the shameful, secret pleasure of touching them, but some of the rest of him as well. Enough to know firsthand his trim frame truly was solid muscle. Because his upper body strength made the more extreme positions easier for him to execute, she’d fallen into the despicable habit of using him to demonstrate those. Despicable because she used those innocuous visual cues as an excuse to make contact.

Note how Jon has his weight balanced. A quick touch of his thigh, braced and holding in Warrior One. Pay particularly attention to the position of the neck here, the angle of the hips…. She’d almost gone too far that day, because when she’d stepped up behind him to lay her hands on his hips, she’d accidentally brushed the upper rise of his taut buttocks with her thumbs. She’d blushed like a girl. Thank heavens for the dim lighting, the flickering candles that created a tranquil environment and hid such reactions. His skin was fueled by a heat that warmed her whole body at the casual touch.

She assumed he came to the class for the camaraderie of others, because he was more proficient in the ancient practice than Rachel was. Some days she wished he would stop coming; other days she could hardly wait to see which day he turned up. In less rational moments she blamed him for reviving all these feelings.

He’d given her direct permission to touch him, after all.

* * * * *

It was a ritual she performed with all her new students. At the beginning of a class, she would take a seat on her mat and ask the first-timer the same question. “May I touch you?”

The reason for the question was innocent enough. At the end of each session, they would perform the yoga nidra, the students lying on their mats, entering a state of deep relaxation. She would visit each one, kneel at the crown of his or her head and massage the temples with herbal-coated hands, her thumbs slowly rotating over the third eye, spiritually located above and centered between the eyebrows.

When she’d met his gaze that first day, at the beginning of class, those blue eyes had been deep and mysterious in the candlelight, almost causing her to lose her train of thought.

“May I touch you? Jon.” She added the name as an afterthought, but it felt wrong, as if an honorific was needed instead. Particularly when something indefinable entered his gaze as if he heard the pause and—unlike her—had no doubt about what should go in that empty space.

“Yes, Rachel. You may.”

No nervous half smile and quick one-word assent, as often happened with a new student, surprised by the question. Those four words, uttered in that velvet tone, had brought back to life dangerous fantasies she’d kept quelled for so long. She had the crazy thought that it wouldn’t matter when or how she wanted to touch him. He would always require that she wait for his permission. It made her palms dampen and her pulse flutter.

Maintaining her focus that day, staying centered in her practice, had been all but impossible, because all she could think about was touching him at the end of it. She’d lectured herself, messed up right and left cues about twelve times, until her students were teasing her good-naturedly. However, when she finally knelt at his head, her hands scented with lavender and eucalyptus oils, she’d tried to keep her eyes on the gold band of her wedding ring, the protection that illusion gave her. Instead, her gaze strayed to his closed eyes, the set of his firm mouth, the slope of his jaw. The way his hair brushed her skin as she laid her fingers on his temples.

She imagined what would happen if he lifted his hands, closed them over her wrists, holding her manacled there as he opened his eyes, looked up at her and made entirely different demands. Just the vision made her wet, a shocking development. It had been quite a while since anything had caused her to have that response.

As if some kind of devil on her shoulder was determined to make things worse, Jon had lifted his chin as she settled her fingers on his brow. Though he kept his eyes closed, his nostrils flared. “I like this scent, Rachel,” he said, his voice low.

Of course he meant the eucalyptus and lavender. Right?

Shame the devil, tell the truth. That was a phrase Penny Beaumont had been raised on. The words echoed in her mind as she reviewed her packing for her first international trip. The truth was she’d always been overweight. Everyone had a truth, and that was hers. Her brother Brian was gay. Her baby sister was skinny, blonde and a perfect southern lady. Their daddy was a Texas millionaire and their grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher from Baton Rouge.

All the Beaumont women were good, old-fashioned, southern ladies who did charity work, raised children and kept a perfect home. They didn’t drink, didn’t smoke and didn’t drive, but her mother was the rebel—she drove her own car. International travel was a new world for Penny.

Today, Penny had a flight to Milan to show her plus-size fashions to the European market. Her American debut had been a success, but this was more pressure. She sat on the bed and looked at her brother. “I should cancel. It’s a mistake.”

Brian hugged her. “It’ll be fine. You’ll be a hit. They invited you.”

“It’s probably all a joke. Europeans think all Americans are fat, and it’ll be a big tabloid story.”

“Stop it. This isn’t high school. You need to clear away the bad thoughts. You’ve worked so hard, and it’s amazing stuff. It’s Milan, Mecca of fashion. And you can’t tell me that there aren’t any plus-size Italian women.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve never traveled outside the US. Dad freaked when I bought a foreign car.”

“He’s so old school they hadn’t invented chalk. He sheltered the girls and I had to fight my own battles. That’s not doing anyone any favors. Between the extreme religion on mom’s side, dad’s money and my being the most popular gay grad student in New York, you have every right to be confused. Just do your thing and be yourself. You’re not backing down after all that work. I’m just glad Andrea talked you into a bodyguard.”

“It’s so unnecessary and over the top. No one is stalking me. But she’s right. After what happened to her cousin, I’m not taking any chances.” Brian and Andrea, Penny’s best friend since college, both thought it was a good idea, and Penny trusted their judgment. “At least, I’ve met the guy. I do feel safe with him.”

“A hard-bodied bodyguard?” Brian teased. “Hot?”

“Sorry, he’s straight. Met him at Andrea and Jake’s Vegas elopement.” She knew her brother was always on the lookout for a new guy. Brian would be drooling soon. Grayson was unbearably hot, strong, and quiet. When they’d met as best man and maid of honor, his touch had sparked everything in her. That man had a way of looking right through her. It had been an intense experience for her. She wondered if he’d even remember her. Hot men tended to forget the big girls. But this was a professional arrangement, not a date.

Brian flopped on the bed. “For shame, Penelope. Vegas! Did you drink?” He imitated their easily offended grandfather.

“Yes,” she confessed.

He propped his hands on his hips. “Did you gamble?”

“Yes.” She smiled.

Brian got nose-to-nose with her. “Did you dance with the sexy hunk?”

“No.” Penny told the truth. Her brother knew what it meant to be different. He was the only one in the family who didn’t make her feel as if she didn’t fit. During his brief stint as a drag queen, she’d made his gowns. It had helped set her on her current career path. Before that Penny had only designed for herself. All the queens had admired her work, even though Brian wasn’t very good on stage. He found being the hot, young, southern guy got him more men while others performed.

“No dancing? It was a wedding.” He nudged her.

“They eloped. It was a five minute wedding and dinner at a steakhouse that rotated. The view was lovely.”

The doorbell to her condo rang.

“Got it.” Brian jumped up.

She knew he wanted a good look at the bodyguard. He opened the door and sighed. “That view is more than lovely.”

Penny marched up to rescue Grayson. “Sorry, my brother is a bit comical at times. I was telling him about the view of Vegas from the restaurant.” She opened the door wider.

“Beautiful.” Grayson’s eyes stayed fixed on her.

Brian brushed her elbow with his, but Penny ignored him. Grayson, technically Jake’s stepbrother, was thirty-one and tall with jet black hair and pale blue eyes. All muscled body and calm demeanor. Grayson had turned Penny on from the start. She really didn’t need Brian adding to it. A tiny part of her didn’t want Grayson along to Milan. She didn’t need the distraction or the rejection.

Still, she’d agreed to a bodyguard. She’d lived in Texas until college then made a bold move to the east coast and met Andrea. Penny wasn’t well traveled by any interpretation.

Her manners finally kicked in. “Grayson, this is my brother Brian. Brian, my jailer for the week, poor man, Grayson. Come in, please.”

“He can frisk me any time.” Brian could flirt with a lamppost when the mood struck him. It annoyed Penny how well he’d played it straight for so long. But Brian loved Texas from horses to roping. He just wasn’t meant for the small towns where being a gay man could be dangerous.

Penny wished she could be as confident as Brian. But flirting was way out of her skill set.

“Be nice, Brian.” She turned to check her home. This distance from Grayson let her think and breathe. She handed Brian the keys. “No wild parties.”

“Me? No way.” He gave her a peck on the cheek and turned to Grayson. “Anything happens to her…”

“Brian, it’s his job. He knows what he’s doing.” Penny hated being the center of attention. It was always uncomfortable. “No need to make a fuss.”

Grayson held out a hand. “It’s fine. Nothing to worry about.”

Brian shook his hand and gave Penny a wink.

The driver saved her by stepping into the doorway. “Ready, Ms. Beaumont?”

“Yes. All this luggage please and his.” She pointed toward her large pile of bags then turned to her bodyguard. “Passport, identification, ticket and everything?”

“All set.” They headed out. “You’re very organized.”

“Yes. Especially with new endeavors.” She shrugged as they boarded the elevator. Alone with him she felt self-conscious. His calm confidence was something she envied. Like a dog that seemed nice but was guarding something he’d kill for. It also made her very aware of him. “I’m sorry to drag you to Italy. Having a bodyguard makes everyone more at ease, but I really don’t think there is anything to worry about.”

“Those jobs are the best. But normally, they don’t ask me to pose as a model. I’m not qualified.”

Not qualified? He was sexy and tall. The idea of him without a shirt or modeling briefs made her wet. But he only had to wear a tux. “Don’t worry. The rest of the models are women. It’s just the finale. It’s a gown and it doesn’t look right without an escort. Brian volunteered, but he has finals. Plus I don’t want people to think I’m paranoid so it’s a good excuse.”

“I’ll be discreet. Security is important. Ask Andrea’s cousin.” He waited until she was settled in the limo before he joined her. No fuss, no hurry. She liked him.

“I know. Poor Denise. That’s part of why Brian was so insistent. I don’t have a current boyfriend or any ex-boyfriends who are stalkers. No one in Italy knows my family. They certainly don’t care that my father has a little Texas money.”

“More than a little from what I found.”

She looked at him. “You did your homework.”

“Part of the job.”

Job. Right, she was a job. “You’ve been highly recommended. I’m sorry to drag you way from your family and girlfriend.” He was being nice because he was a professional. She couldn’t let her imagination run wild. At the wedding, he’d been very enthusiastic about Jake and Andrea and, all the time, very considerate and kind to Penny. He probably was a genuinely nice guy, but he could have any woman. Half her size or less. Trish, her little sister, for instance. Penny was so grateful not to have her sister around right now. No one would notice Penny with Trish in the room. Certainly no man ever did. But in Milan, there would be much steeper competition.

Grayson could have anyone. Penny would have to lock him up to have him to herself. Or pay him. Both of which weren’t things she’d consider. If a man didn’t want her, she didn’t need him. That was Brian’s motto. Penny generally was single and had grown used to it. She needed to put Grayson out of her mind.

He’d said something and she’d missed it with all her mental lecturing.

“I’m sorry?” she replied.

“I said you’re not taking me away from anyone. I don’t have a girlfriend. Still looking for the right challenge.”

The word gave her a chill. Challenge? It had to be a joke. “Challenge? You sound like my Uncle Lubby trying to decide which horse to break.”

“Not break. Set free. But you can’t ride and love a truly wild horse. If it doesn’t trust you, it can’t feel safe that you’ll feed and take care of it.”

“Oh please. Have you ever ridden a horse in your life?” He filled out his jeans, a T-shirt, and sport coat well, but he wasn’t a southern type. “You’ve got New York City written all over you. Men want skinny and pretty, not a challenge. Believe me, I’ve been a challenging woman all my life and men don’t like it. Ask any of the men in my family.”

He shifted to look at her. “They clearly aren’t the right type of men. Not for you.”

What type of man did he think was right for her? Penny knew this plane ride would be torture. The smell of him, the way he made her feel, and that intensity he projected made her long for her bedroom and toys. He’d be in her fantasies for months.
