EXCERPT:

“I don’t drink, but could use a strong one, right now. Not this sissy stuff.” He lifted the glass to his lips, downed the contents, and shoved his now-empty champagne flute away before he leaned in toward her. The smell of alcohol on his breath hinted that he’d already had too much to drink. “Know anyone around here with some whiskey?” The dark sapphire of his eyes chilled her. This was a man used to getting what he wanted. “I’d even share.” His voice deepened and became husky with his offer and she shivered.

“I don’t drink with men I don’t know.” Debra stuck out her hand. “I’m Debra, and you are?”

The man grabbed another glass of champagne off a passing waiter’s tray and guzzled the drink in one swallow. “The name’s Johnson O’Neill. Now about that whiskey.” He reached out and drew her up to standing then tugged her in close to him. Wrapping his arm around her back, he moved her body in a slow two-step motion.

Debra gazed into his eyes. “You don’t have to seduce me for the whiskey.” She stepped out of his embrace and put her hands on her hips. She frowned.

“That’s not why I drew you into my arms. You were tapping your foot when I arrived—and I thought you might like a dance. A pretty woman like you shouldn’t be sitting alone.” He stretched his palm out again in a plea.

"from Divine Deception"

Having Nick present while she visited with Joseph wasn't really in her plans. Frankie had tried to talk Nick into taking the motorcycle to the hospital later in the morning but Margaret had come running down the granite steps swinging a picnic basket as Frankie was climbing into the truck. She handed it to Nick with two quick kisses on his cheeks and stood watching as he climbed into the passenger side of the cab and they pulled from the driveway.

Now they were headed into town, the midmorning sun hanging in an azure sky, its rays dancing on Seneca Lake. Normally Frankie would have loved a day like this but the cab seemed claustrophobic with Nick Gradin's surly attitude sitting between them.

"It's not my fault you didn't know who I was," she said quietly.

Turning to her, he cocked a skeptical eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest.

"You knew your father had a stepdaughter."

"And a child bride," Nick remarked coldly. "I expected my stepsister to have pigtails and braces. Not…" His hand motioned up and down her torso.

"Well, you didn't seem to mind the package yesterday."

"Yesterday I thought you were Joseph's assistant."

"Funny, yesterday I thought you were a womanizing pig of a manwhore." She shot him a patronizing smile. "Guess one of us was right."

He frowned. "If you'll recall, I wasn't the one who came on to you in the field."

"As I recall, it was you who was ready for action in the wine cellar."

"I was simply reading the signals you were sending out."

"Then you have a faulty GPS."

"My wiring is just fine thank you."

"I suppose you think it is, with all the woman you have tumbling into your posh Philadelphia bed."

"Now what the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Oh, as if you don't know."

"I have no idea what you're…oh, this is stupid. Pull over here." Nick motioned to a dirt road that led to a small alcove near the lake.

She'd been parking there once in high school.

"I'm not going to see Joseph until we clear this up and can at least be civil to each other," he said.

Frankie acquiesced. He was right. It wouldn't do Joseph any good to have them bickering in front of him. She turned the truck into the trees, their pumpkin and gold leaves floating passively on the gentle breeze. They bumped down the dirt tracks, the center lane overgrown with the dried weeds of summer. Frankie felt as if she was entering the lion's mouth. Anger surrounded Nick like the cloud of dust trailing behind them. She had no idea why he was so pissed when she'd only spoken the truth.

Shoving the truck in park and shutting off the engine, Frankie stared out over the lake. Its cobalt surface rippled at the gentle touch of the fall breeze. Maybe this was the perfect place to help Nick see things her way. Though she hadn't exactly started the conversation off in the right direction, maybe she could try again. "I think—"

As if he hadn't heard her, Nick got out and slammed the door. Pacing in front of the truck, he pulled at his bottom lip, an angry scowl furrowing his brows. What the hell was his problem? Frankie got out and stalked after him. "For someone who wants to talk, you're damn rude, you know that, Gradin?"

He grabbed her and pressed her against the front of truck, the solid planes of his chest trapping her. "I don't know what my father told you about me but I do not—I repeat, do not—have a rotating door on my bedroom. There is no harem of beauties waiting for me in Philly. When I choose to sleep with a woman I like there to be a little chemistry between me and the lady." His mouth came down hungrily on hers, his taste already familiar. When his tongue ran the seam of her lips, she had no choice but to open to his assault. Fisting his hand in her hair, Nick controlled the breath-stealing tempo while his other hand surrounded her breast, squeezing the sensitive flesh. Warm shocks of want shot straight to her pussy. Frankie's hands seized the soft chambray of his shirt, her heart racing in her ears. Nick broke from her as abruptly as he began. "And there's no denying our chemistry, Francesca."

TOO MUCH BOOGIE - An Anthology From Logical Lust and LL Publications

TOO MUCH BOOGIE - A New Anthology from LL Publications

Selected stories inspired from the recorded gems of the Delta blues, Chicago blues, Memphis blues and Texas blues. Called "the Devil's music," the stories of the blues goes beyond jump turns, slow drag ditties, reel, jigs, minstrel songs, ragtime, or the buzzard lope. These lyrics connected to these stories celebrate heartache, separation, distrust, betrayal, lust, but they promise a healing love of revival and renewal. It's a celebration of the present, of the now, and it's totally mad at the past and suspicious of the future. But who are kidding? Let us tell the truth. Really, the themes of this raucous collection often wallow in carnal pain, in the weakness of the flesh, and the temptation of sin. Taboo love, forbidden love. Sometimes it's just plain nasty. All of the good stuff.

In Too Much Boogie, the spirit of the blues afflicts everybody. Within the emotional pull of the lyrics and its stirring music, there is a common language of the heart and the soul. Although the blues were born and bred in the land of Jim Crow by black people, it has nothing to do with class, color, or category. Even the rich get the blues and do dumb things. The book shows there is a pulse beating within each of us and that pulse is the blues.

ROCKING CHAIR BLUES

Jayme Whitfield

“Kick up my furnace and turn up my heat

Brown my biscuits and chop my meat

That’s why I want him around

’Cause I’m the hottest gal in the town.”

Hottest Gal in Town — Lil Johnson (1940)

I.

IN AN ATTEMPT to escape the sweltering heat, Abraham ducked into the first shop he came across. The sign on the door read “Second Chances,” and he rolled his eyes at the clichĂ© name of the used furniture store. He hesitated in the doorway, giving his eyes a moment to adjust to the dim light. The room he found himself in wasn’t much cooler than the sidewalk had been, but a small fan in the back attracted his attention. Weaving his way past occasional tables and frayed settees, he finally reached the rear of the store. He looked around furtively, hoping the sales clerk hadn’t heard his entrance. He wanted a few minutes alone with the tepid air the fan was spreading around.

With a sigh of contentment, he unbuttoned the top of his shirt, hoping to allow some of the heat to escape. Sweat beaded on his forehead and pooled in the small of his back. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been so uncomfortable.

“Makin’ yourself at home, I see.”

Startled by the woman’s voice, Abraham jumped. She laughed, a rich, throaty laugh that drew his eyes to her. She stood at the base of a stairwell about four feet from him. The lack of light made her features hard to discern, but what he could see of her form invited more inspection. Long legs led to broad hips and a small waist. Her breasts were large, barely contained by the thin green cotton dress she wore.

“Just tryin’ to escape the heat,” he replied.

“See something you like?”

Abraham was taken aback by the forward question, and then realized she must have been talking about the collection of used furnishings that surrounded him. Realizing that if he didn’t at least feign an interest, he’d be ejected from the shop, he pointed to the item closest to him—a wooden rocking chair with cane-webbed back and padded seat. Nodding her approval, the woman moved in his direction, coming to a stop only inches from him. He could feel the heat of her, smell her scent, a curious mixture of lavender, sweat, and Bourbon.

His gaze traveled over her face. She had wide hazel eyes that were fringed by dark lashes, high cheekbones, and full lips. Her skin was almost luminescent, like melted caramel dipped in honey. Thick black curls tumbled down her shoulders and he resisted the urge to touch the silky strands.

She laughed again, and then turned and sat in the chair he’d pointed to. She began to rock, her breasts rising and falling with the motion.

“This is the nicest piece in this backwater town,” she grinned up at him, the mischief in her eyes enchanting.

“Is that so?” He crouched down on his haunches, bringing them face-to-face again. She smiled, flashing him a glimpse of even, white teeth.

“Sure it is. I wouldn’t lie. She hasn’t gotten much use, only by a man or two. I’ll make you a deal—you give me $10 and she’s yours.” Her spiel over, she grinned at him. He laughed and ran his fingers up her bare arm.

“I don’t know, looks a lot more worn than you say. I’m not a wealthy man, and $10 is a lot of money for something that I might get one use out of, don’t ya’ think?”

Raising an eyebrow, she slid her tongue out and licked her bottom lip, as if she were considering his words carefully. Abraham was entranced.

Without warning, she jumped up from the chair. Her sudden movement startled him, causing him to lose his balance and fall onto his ass. She laughed, and then extended a hand to help him up. He caught it, clamping it tight in his own. Once he was back on his feet, he pulled her close to him, his arms circling around her back, her breasts tight against his chest. To his surprise, she didn’t fight him. Instead, she pulled his arms down until his hands were on her ass.

“Now listen here, cheapskate. That chair is the best around, ready to accommodate. The weaving is nice and tight, just right for a man your size.” She spun around and rubbed her ass against his obvious arousal. “Look at the curves, and those legs—long and sleek. And the color—no, you won’t find another one like it, especially at that price.”

“Not much use, eh?” he asked, his voice thick. “A man or two, you said. How do I know you’re telling the truth? I prefer the things that I pay for to be new. And I’m not cheap, just wary of being takin’ for a ride. How do I know the previous owner won’t come lookin’ for it—or that it has some fault that isn’t apparent to the naked eye?”

She pulled away, sitting in the chair, sliding her back down and her knees up. Her dress pooled around her knees, which she casually spread wide, giving him a view he wouldn’t soon forget.

“Well, sir—” she began, but he cut her off.

“Abraham.”

“Abraham, all I have left to say is that if you’re not buyin’ it, I’ll have to just keep sittin’ on it. I’m not in business to be giving things away. My rent has to be paid, same as the rest, and we both know this chair is the best around. So if you’re not interested, then I’ll just keep sittin’ on it—someone else’ll be along soon enough.” As she finished talking, she slid her thighs shut.

“Ten dollars, right?”

“That’s right, Abraham. Ten dollars and it’s yours. You can take it home, put it in your room, use it how you like.”

“I’ll take it.”

She laughed again, and then jumped up.

“Let me just take it in the back room and clean it up a bit, then I’ll have my boy bring it ’round to your address...”

“I’ll come with you and take it now, if you don’t mind.”

She stopped then, her green eyes flashing.

“I don’t think that would be such a good idea, Abraham...”

“But I do, and since I’m the paying customer, you know I’m right.”

The Howling by Erin McCarthy

“I know you feel grateful to him, but you can’t build a marriage on gratitude. He can’t possible want that. Won’t want that if you’re honest with him.”

The little food she’d eaten burned in her stomach. “I care about him.”

“And you’re dreaming about being eaten by wolves on your wedding night. Look, if you can’t call it off altogether, just postpone it. Indefinitely. Tell him you’re not ready. Just go on dating or whatever and give yourself time to figure it out.”

“Do you think he’ll be okay with that?” Liv asked, grasping on to hope. That seemed possible. Workable. It would buy her a reprieve.

But not from sex.

She should want to have sex. It had been six months since she had, and her body should be eager, primed, on fire, yet she chilled out and dried up every time she contemplated it.

“I honestly don’t know. Scarborough doesn’t exactly seem like a patient kind of guy to me. He’s… brisk.” Mary Fran made a face, her hand checking the back of her gold hoop earring. “But it’s worth a shot when the alternative is a marriage you don’t want.”

Liv wanted to protest, but she couldn’t even dredge up a convincing enough voice, so she let her silence speak for her.

Then Mary Fran spoke the words she couldn’t stand to hear. “Just because you don’t have family doesn’t mean you’re alone. Remember that. You have friends who love you. You’re not alone.”

Yes, she was. She knew Mary Fran meant well, and she knew her friends cared about her. But it wasn’t the same. Since that horrible night twenty years ago when her parents had been murdered, she was alone. Some of her teachers growing up, one couple out of the many foster parents, and a few close friends had all cared about her, but she didn’t have family. Someone who was biologically or legally tied to her.

Orphan was a word she’d hated growing up and Sebastian and Scarborough understood that, owning the lonely label themselves.

“Are you sleeping with him yet? How is that going?”

Looking uneasily around the crowded room, Liv pulled her dove gray crew sweater closer around her. “No, we haven’t.”

“Why does he even want to marry you?”

The words were like a slap. “Probably guilt because his brother not only wouldn’t commit to me he stole what little money I had and left without a word. I mean, why else would anyone marry me? I don’t bring a lot to the table, dead broke and emotionally stunted. It’s pity, that’s why he proposed. Hello.” Saying it out loud was liking taking a bullet, even as she hid behind sarcasm, but it was the truth. It wasn’t like Scarborough was marrying her for true love either.

God, what a mess.

Mary Fran’s voice softened. “That’s not what I meant. Of course you bring a lot to the table. You’re generous and smart and compassionate, and you’re beautiful. Any man would be lucky to have you. But with everything that’s happened, I don’t understand the push for marriage… if Scar has feelings for you it would make more sense for the two of you to explore that slowly.”

“I think we both want security.”

For that reason, maybe more than any other, Liv would marry him.

He was giving her a home, a family, the possibility of children, a life she craved to the very marrow of her bones, and had since she was eight years old and had lost her parents in one swift brutal act of violence.

Scarborough was loyal and stable and motivated.

And he was the one man alive she trusted to keep her safe during her frightening all night black-outs.
