Raven’s eyes shot open. She flinched from the blinding sunlight streaming through her bedroom window.
Morning. It was morning.
What happened last night?
After she left class and Jack behind, she took the bus to the art store…but somehow she didn’t remember making it there. Nor did she recall coming home.
Her head throbbed as she pushed herself upright. It felt like a thousand elves were pattering around in her head, banging to get out. Then the pitch-black darkness of her surroundings started coming back to her.
Duskiness surrounded her with only a smattering of light around the city to let her know how close the nearest town sat. She remembered hopping off the bus after it stopped. She remembered the kind-faced bus driver, an older man of Native American descent, who looked upon her for far too long, as if he knew her. However, she had never seen the man before in her life...or had she?
It was even one of those dreams where she could actually see herself from afar. Although she couldn't see her features too clearly, Raven still recognized the same long black hair framing her heart-shaped face and almond brown eyes that danced at the edge of black, along with her full pink lips and cinnamon-brown skin. She could see her parents in her eyes and face. Shades of both her father of the Blackfoot tribe heritage and her Egyptian mother echoed off her own features. She tried hard not to think of them but when she saw herself in the mirror and in dreams like this, it was difficult not to feel the hole in her heart from their deaths.
Images flashed and popped into her thoughts. The deserted train tracks that sat in the middle of the desert, the sound of an oncoming train, and heavy breathing. Then the weight of a body that pushed her to the ground and sliced at her arms.
Her arms suddenly began throbbing as if signaling her attention to the pain.
Raven ripped the sheet away from her arm and peered down. Amidst the dark brown of her skin, there was nothing. No sign of a scratch or any indentation to mark her. What was going on here? Was it all just a dream?
As the question popped in her mind, the shrill scream of the phone broke the quietness, distracting Raven from the vivid images of the all too real nightmare. She looked around the room to remind herself of her comforting surroundings. It was inviting, all right. The warm oak furniture that sat around her bed incited a memory of when she and Jack had picked the pieces up after she got her first home. They bought the nightstand stacked with art books at a garage sale from an older woman who was selling her daughter’s furniture after she got married and moved out. The desk, overfilled with both her and Jack’s art pieces, reminded her of the bargain they struck with the owner, shortly before it was to be tossed away and forgotten in the trash heap. Jack took pride in patching it up, sanding it off, and then applying a coat of finish to bring out the natural wood.
The house itself was a bargain, too. Raven couldn’t afford much on the meager salary she got when working spare jobs at the Navajo reservation but she jumped in with all her savings and part of her scholarship money to rent it.
Since then, Raven had fallen in love with the small home. Sometimes she would complain about the tiny space and imagined moving into a larger spread with multiple bedrooms and furnishings. After last night’s ordeal that may or may not have happened, her little house was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen. Her mother, father, aunt and uncle would be so proud... if they were still alive.
Slowly, she stretched out her shaky arms. They were smooth and unscratched. Perhaps it was a dream. Even she couldn’t have imagined that kind of pain.
Raven exhaled heavily.
At twenty-five, she was not ready for any signs of a heart attack nor was she prepared to be delusional. What seemed like a regular night had turned into something out of a nightmare. She had to get this out in the open or else she would surely end up going crazy with obsession.
She looked up and felt relief flow through her at the return of silence. The phone must have stopped ringing sometime ago while she was distracted. Suddenly, it started its incessant ringing again.
Part of her wanted to scream until it stopped. Instead, she exhaled. “Someone’s going to have to get that,” she muttered.
The phone stopped ringing midway as someone picked it up. “Hello?” The deep, muffled voice came from the kitchen.
Raven peeked into the hall. “Jack, is that you?”
Relief spread over her as she recalled the familiar face. Jack. Just the person she wanted to see. His warm smile, sparkling hazel eyes, and sturdy but thin build immediately calmed her. She would give anything to melt into his arms and lose herself in his embrace, his soft words, and his touch. They had been together for almost a year now, and he was the only person she could trust in the whole world. The only person that mattered to her since she had no family.
The faint chorus of the musical news theme erupted from the living room television set. She smiled to herself. That was Jack, practical, informative and always needing the news on when he came over to see her each morning.
“Blood clots and blood disorders affect more than five million people in the US alone. For a cleaner system, try Delanin, the leading non-prescription medication that targets blood cells for a cleaner flow through the entire body. Consult your doctor if any side effects or allergic reactions occur. Brought to you by Dridan. Making a better future, today.”
Raven idly rubbed her shoulders where the scratches would have been. “Cleaner blood flow?” She chuckled. “They’ll make a pill for anything these days.”
She shook her head and opened her mouth to call out to Jack. However, just at that very moment, he appeared in the doorway with her black cordless phone in his hand.
“What happened last night?” she asked. She didn’t realize how groggy she was until she heard the sound of her own raspy voice.
Jack laughed. “Good one, Hon. Just sit there and pretend as if you didn’t give me a heart attack when they found you.” He froze at the look on her face, and then his smile melted into a frown. “You’re serious, aren’t you? You really don’t remember?”
Raven shook her head. “No, I really don’t. Tell me, Jack.”
He placed his hand over the receiver and walked toward her. “They found you unconscious in the desert,” he said softly. “They thought you may have suffered from heat stroke or something.”
“They?”
“Police officers. They brought you here this morning. Good thing you kept your address handy in your backpack like I suggested.”
“My backpack!” Raven leaned forward, remembering the tugging from the unseen hands. She could almost feel the jerking and hear the tearing as whatever it was behind her dug into the backpack material. Maybe there would be proof on her backpack of what attacked her. Pain spiked at the center of her forehead, jolting her backwards onto the bed.
“Easy… Easy,” Jack soothed. “Your backpack is fine. I put it in the living room in front of the television.”
“Jack,” Raven said, cradling her head. “Last night was warm, but nothing intense. Especially not hot enough to cause a heat stroke.”
Jack’s gaze flicked to the phone in his hand. “It’s Mr. Davies. He wants to talk to you about your absent days from work.”
“I don’t want to talk to him. Jack, you have to—”
Jack sighed before placing the phone up to his ear. “She’s a bit detained at the moment, Mr. Davies, but I’ll be sure to have her call you… All right… Bye.”
“You think I’m crazy, don’t you?” Raven said.
Clicking the phone off, he laughed. “Talking like that I’m beginning to believe so. Look Rave, I’m just glad you’re okay and they found you when they did. Something could have happened to you while you were out there in the middle of nowhere. If I had just gone with you…” He stopped and looked down at his vise-like grip on the phone. His smooth, tanned hand quickly turned white. Slowly, with a sigh, he released it.
“Jack, I’m sorry. I really just needed a little time to myself. I thought it would be a quick trip.”
He didn’t say anything, as he wrapped his strong arms around her and pulled her close in a tight embrace. Reaching down, he slipped his hand under her chin and pulled her into a soft kiss. His lips were warm and sweet, just what the doctor ordered. Raven felt him push the phone to the side and hold her gently as he kissed her deeply. Then she moved down to lie in the crook of his neck and shoulder. He smelled fresh, like a cool breeze and soft musk. She also spotted a hint of India ink and figured he had come over to work on his latest drawing again. Right then and there, she knew that smell would always remind her of Jack.
“Don’t do that to me again, Rave.” He whispered into her hair. “I couldn’t bear it if I lost you.”
She gave him a tight squeeze as the teapot whistled loudly from the kitchen. With a kiss on her forehead and a final one on her lips, he stood. “Now, you stay in bed and rest, okay? I’ll get you some tea and breakfast.” She watched him as he walked from the room.
Raven found herself missing his embrace as soon as he left. Although they had spent nearly all of their time together, were rather intimate and getting ever closer, Raven had never been ready to give her body to him. She had gladly let him into her heart, where he had been the only occupant since her family’s death, and since they often shared the same thoughts, it was easy to let him into her mind.
But her body…
Raven wrapped her arms around herself at the thought. She wanted it to be special. Many times, she had dreamed of the weight of his body pushing down against hers. The feel of his lips brushing through her lips before his mouth overtook hers. A sea of caresses would mesh their limbs together as one as they bound themselves to each other both in heart and body. Perhaps she had romanticized it a bit but the human connection she always felt was always lacking, except when she daydreamed. She had never grown up expecting to wait but as she distanced herself from everyone she met, it felt natural to close off from that kind of physical human contact. She would think about it, sometimes dream about how the first time would be. Deep in her heart, she knew Jack was going to be the man to journey there with her once the time was right. She was thankful he hadn’t pushed her into anything.
Raven swung her legs over the side of the bed as the sounds and smells of salty crispy bacon, fluffy eggs, and warm tea with a light toast on the side, wafted into the bedroom air. Jack always knew what she wanted.
Ignoring the rush of blood escaping her brain, Raven pushed to her feet and started toward the kitchen. Her stomach grumbled, and her tongue salivated with the anticipation of the feast ahead. The morning newscaster still twittered from the TV as she made her way across the hall.
“That better be a big tall, hairy monster coming toward me with an axe in hand because I distinctly remember telling Raven Blackheart to remain in bed while I brought her food.”
Raven chuckled. “What can I say? I’ll be hard-headed until the day I die.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything else from you, love. So marry me.”
Raven froze in her tracks. It sounded like Jack. It even looked like Jack. But she could have sworn it was a body snatcher who had just asked that question. Either that or she was completely losing her mind.
Jack finally turned to look over his shoulder at her. “No response? Color me surprised. I’ve never known you to go tight-lipped. ”
“I…” What was she supposed to say? “I didn’t think you were serious.”
Jack slipped a piece of bacon in his mouth and shrugged. “You’re right. I’m screwing this up already.” He walked to her and went down on his knees then took her hand.
"One knee..." Raven whispered, trying to bite back a smile.
Jack looked down. "Oh! Right." He quickly hopped up on one knee and then cleared his throat.
“Raven Blackheart. The first time I saw you in class, I knew I had to convince you that I wasn’t entirely crazy but that I really liked you and wanted to get to know you. We’ve been together through some hard times and I know I’ve been a pain. I know you’ve been a pain.”
She playfully shoved him, causing him to laugh.
Becoming serious, he continued, “I love you, Raven. Breaking through those walls you have put up hasn’t been easy, but I’m patient. I just want to be there for you and I want you to be my wife. I don’t have much, but I do have my word and my heart.” He looked down at the half-eaten bacon in his free hand and raised it. “And bacon.”
Raven couldn’t help giggling. “Food is the way to your heart, Jack. Not mine.”
“Yeah well, I don’t have a ring yet.” He wrapped the bacon strip around her finger. “Figured we could go shopping or something. Pick one out of a catalog or…”
She pulled his face into hers and planted a soft kiss on his lips. “You are insane, you know that? Only you would give me an engagement ring made of bacon.”
Jack snorted. “I wanted to leave an impression.”
“Oh you’ve already done that.” She leaned into his embrace. Misjudging his stance, she fell backward into his arms in a mass of giggles and limbs. The kitchen floor was cold and hard to the touch, but Raven didn’t care. This is what she missed and, even more so, this is what she needed after such a harrowing night.
Jack scooped her up into his arms. “So, is that a yes?”
She nestled the bacon strip around her fingers and held it up. “What do you think?”
He kissed her again and moaned softly when she deepened it. “Mmm, the food is going to get cold and if we stay down here any longer, I cannot be accountable for my actions.”
Jack stood and offered her a hand up. He then went back to preparing their breakfast.
“I really wish you had talked to Mr. Davies,” he said, scooping the eggs onto two plates.
Raven maneuvered her fingers to lift the bacon strip to her mouth. Mmm, not crispy but nice, warm and a little undercooked just like she liked. “He’s the last thing I’m worried about right now, Jack.”
“Already thinking about wedding plans, huh? We should have something small. I have some cash in my savings but I think we should hang onto it until after the wedding so we won’t be living in a cardboard box under an overpass or something.”
She shook her head as she settled into the chair at the small breakfast nook table. “I was thinking about last night. Heat stroke doesn’t attack my backpack, jump on my back, and scratch my arm.”
Jack froze when he reached the table. A wrinkle formed in the middle of his forehead. He grabbed her arm, turned it over and analyzed the skin. “I don’t see any scratches.”
“That’s what’s so crazy. I remember it distinctly. I even remember feeling it but there’s no sign of it.” She sighed. “I don’t think it was human.”
“What?”
Raven exhaled slowly. If he thought she was talking nutsy now, he would think she completely lost it when she voiced this next idea. “Whatever attacked me? It didn’t feel like a person. It felt like…a thing.” Before he could stop her and express any doubt, she continued. “I think something’s out there over those hills, Jack. I can’t be sure but I saw lights on the other side, like flashlights. And I heard voices. The train track that’s been deserted for years was still working and I think something is happening out there. Scratch that, I ‘m sure about it. I want to go back and check it out.”
“Raven.” The urgency in his voice told her he was ready to unload a series of logical reasoning that could explain everything she presented before him. She watched him grab the hand towel from his shoulder and toss it onto the marble counter. Then he frowned. “You’re serious about this…”
“Yeah, I am. If it hadn’t been for my backpack....” Her backpack! That was it! She remembered her previous thought. If she could find the scratch marks, she could try to figure out what kind of beast had attacked her. And then she could really prove she wasn’t imagining all this.
Raven jumped from her chair and swung around to head to the living room. Right away she spotted her backpack lying against the wall near the front door.
Her heart nearly stopped when she saw the dark green thread sewn along the sides of the pockets. Slowly, she ran her fingers over the thin thread to make sure her eyes weren’t playing tricks on her. To anyone else, the thread would be invisible, but Raven knew her backpack. The thread was a slightly lighter shade than the rest of the backpack.
“Did you do this?” she asked softly.
“What?”
She thrust the backpack forward. “This, Jack. Did you sew this back up?”
Jack folded his arms. “Raven, you know it was like that already.”
She scoffed. “No, no it wasn’t. Look, the thread is new. I never sewed this up nor did I rip it. Jack, you have to believe me.”
“Shhh. Shh. Come on now.” He pulled her into his arms and held her.
What was going on? If she had been a conspiracy theorist, she would think someone was trying to cover something up. But why would they do such a thing to her? She was nobody, a student, who happened to take a wrong turn off the wrong bus track.
Raven’s grip loosened until she felt the backpack fall from her hands and onto the floor with a soft thud. She wrapped her arms around Jack, indulging in the feel of his muscled back and thin frame as he held onto her tightly.
“What’s going on with me, Jack? I feel like my mind is trying to tell me something but my brain refuses to show me. And I can’t shake this feeling. I just know something is wrong.”
“Listen,” Jack reached down and cradled her face in his hands, “come, and eat breakfast. We’ll sit and relax for a while, and then you can tell me what happened. Tell me whatever you remembered. After that, maybe we can take the same route there and trace your steps to see if we can find anything. Sound good?”
Raven nodded. Good old Jack. “I knew there was a reason I loved you.”
“Why? Because I always cave to your demands when you bat those pretty eyes and give me that sexy pout?” He slipped his hands over her hips and gently nuzzled her neck.
Raven gave him another playful shove. “No, I’m serious. I could really use your support.”
He looked at her for a moment, his eyes sparkling again. He was as handsome as she had ever seen him. A thin face matched with wispy, short dark brown hair and a tan complexion made him look perfect in her eyes. Gently he reached up and caressed the side of her face. “You’ll always have my support, Babe. No matter what, we’re in this together.”
“Together.” She liked the sound of that. Reaching up, she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him even tighter. Then a loud smack and the warm tingle on her rear nearly made her jump to the ceiling.
“Now, go eat your breakfast so we can get out of here. Granger’s class is in a few hours and I still need to finish this assignment.”
Raven started toward the kitchen with Jack behind her, grabbing for her again. She laughed and jumped, pretending to dodge his moves. It felt good to laugh and be silly again. After what she went through, it was a welcome distraction before the storm.

~Excerpt~
“Tell me what your world is like.”
Ariya gazed at the moonlight streaming through the wide window of her room that morning. It had been much too long since this serene calm washed over her. Coming home had been a last minute decision but she was glad when Jace agreed to join her in the Aziza realm. They took their chance for escape during the Ashen Twilight House’s trek across the states to the west coast. Jace’s skin couldn’t take the harsh sun’s rays and live to see the night. It had been a concern she didn’t have to consider previously. Then again she hadn’t been aware of Nightwalkers until recently. Once she fell into the care of the house after escaping her world, a whole other underworld opened up to her. One filled with Nightwalkers, Lycans and Shifter Elves. It was nothing like she had ever encountered. Now her life had taken another dramatic turn once she lost her heart to Jace Archane, Regent in the House of Blood. His uncle Julian wasn’t so pleasant at first and Ariya didn’t exactly extend a welcoming hand herself. Of course a bloodthirsty elemental creature had been after her so hospitality wasn’t exactly high on the list of priorities while running for her life.
Now it was time to return to the beautiful green lands that served as her home. After almost having the life sucked out of her, being nearly beaten to death by a shifter renegade—or Shifter Ren as the house calls them—and passing through the portal of her own demise, Ariya could afford some time to get away from it all and return home to serenity. Before leaving, they promised to meet the members of the Ashen Twilight House in Los Angeles for a new start once she and Jace returned from the Aziza realm. Soon the time would come when they would have to leave the realm and return to the mortal world. For now, she wanted to enjoy every quiet moment together while they had it.
Jace’s cold touch brought her back to the present. His hand wrapped around her chin, gently stroking the skin with his thumb.
She turned back to the bed where Jace Archane, her love, watched her from the soft ivory folds of her bed sheets. He was beautiful. Perhaps the most striking creature she had ever laid eyes on. Dark strands of his wavy shoulder length hair fell over his strong, smooth pale visage. He was in his early twenties at the time of his change; an age he would remain as mortals leave behind their legacy of ashes. He’d always have his charming boyish face with cupid’s bow lips, bright blue eyes and a strong sharp nose. Now she had his undivided attention. His handsome expression was curious, waiting with the question of his words. His muscled chest was bare under the dark red shirt that lay open over the rise and fall of his breathing.
“Soft damp green hills fill every part of our lands with cool springs and large bodies of water in between.”
Jace chuckled. “Sounds like Scotland.”
Ariya nodded, smiling. “It does have similarities. Like with the hunters we assisted when we ventured to Dahomey in the mortal realm. Different worlds yet so much alike.” Her forehead wrinkled with thought. “It was there I noticed that the men were bred to be warriors since the dawn of humans. Here the warriors, my guard, are women. We still have a specialized guard composed of men who stay in the outskirts of our world. But the tradition has always been to keep female guards for the castle.”
“Hmm, well the House of Lycan is the only house structured similarly.”
“But not bred. They’re born into their strength.”
Jace nodded. “You have a point there. So girls grow up to be in the guard?”
Ariya’s shoulder rose in a slight shrug. “Some do, if they wish it.” She waved a hand before poking Jace in the chest. “Anyway, I was describing. The days are longer here than the nights in the mortal realm. They have been since I can remember. We can bring the rain whenever the crops need it. And we celebrate every aspect of life’s changes. From life itself to life passing on, to birth, the changes of the season and betrothals followed by wedded unions.”
Her fingers traced the hard line of his chest as she spoke.
“And what of your betrothal?” Jace caught her finger and looked up at her.
Ariya shook her head. “I never really considered it growing up. I guess I always had my head in the books, learning about the mortal realm. Teaching the young ones and honing my own powers.”
“And then you found me.” A sly smile sneaked across his lips. He lifted her finger and kissed it softly. “Tell me more.”
Ariya shrugged. “There’s much more and yet some of it’s not too terribly interesting.”
“It’s of interest to me. What if an outsider wanted to stay here?”
“I—I don’t know.” She looked away. “I don’t think it’s ever happened before. For a while it was just us and the mortals. Everything else was myth or the inhabitants of our world.” She smiled. “Why do you ask?”
Jace turned away, staring ahead into space as he spoke. A crease formed in the middle of his forehead and his lips thinned into a straight line as he thought. In the silence that followed, he finally looked up at her. The hard gaze melted into warmth as he smiled.
“Curiosity is all.”
Ariya cocked a single eyebrow. “And that’s why you blocked your thoughts from me?”
“Privacy, my love,” Jace said, grinning. Traces of his Scottish accent filtered in and out. She noticed it tended to mix with others, mostly American. Probably due to America being his home for the past few decades.
“You would miss your home if you stayed here,” Ariya said. She meant it more as a question but the statement was clear.
Jace idly ran his hand along her warm, dark skin. “I already miss it. I often wonder what my kids are thinking, even at this very moment. Or my faculty bosses. Do they think I died in the chaos? Or just up and left?” He shook his head. “Not sure which I think is worse.”
Ariya remembered Jace loved to teach. When she first met him, he appeared aloof and full of himself. But as she got to know him, his shell opened and she discovered the love he had for teaching.
“Traveling for so long and seeing so many things can be like inhaling a well of knowledge,” he had once told her. “Like water. Sooner or later that excess has to come out one way or another. I wanted to share mine.” And so it did as he shared his expertise and experience with the college kids—although said knowledge was sold as second hand hearsay or from his reading in books rather than first hand encounters that would reveal his true secret.
“Enough of that now,” Jace said smiling up at her. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her close. “I think we’re both in need of a break once in awhile.” His voice grew softer, huskier as he drew near. She anticipated the kiss that lingered in the next moment.
Ariya’s stomach fluttered as Jace’s lips brushed hers. Her eyes closed and only touches remained to overtake her senses. Jace’s strong yet gentle hand moved up her arm, the warmth of his tongue and mouth welcomed her at the same time. How much her life had changed since she fell in love with him. The single act of being in his presence transformed into a magical experience itself the moment her heart became his. No more was he just a man or a Nightwalker she felt drawn to. He was hers, an extension of herself in a way that had broken the barrier of personal space to become a part of her that she was free to touch and love anytime she pleased.
The moonlight in the dark sky had shifted, bathing them in darkness while the room fell in light.
“Taste me,” Ariya said, feeling Jace move to her neck. His grip on her froze.
Morning would be upon them soon, and it’d be awhile before she could feel Jace again. For as the sunlight drew upon the lands, the rise and fall of his chest would cease, his breath would be frozen and death would claim his body.
“You want me to feed upon you, Ariya?”
His breath brushed against her neck as she spoke, his hand caressing the dark curves of her body.
Ariya arched her head to look at him in the shadowy room within the night. Already she could see the bright white shine of his elongated fangs peeking out from between his parted lips. The sight made her heart race, her breath shallow and her wings flutter slightly against her back.
“Yes Jace,” she breathed.
His masculine grip slid down to her hips urging her legs to wrap around his and straddle him.
Jace’s fingers immediately went to the soft gossamer sleeve of her dress. He pulled them down with a controlled urgency that sent her heart racing further. Careful of her wings, he gingerly opened the dress down the front to reveal her dark full breasts.
Ariya sucked in a breath sharply, feeling the brush of his sharp fangs against her soft tender chest.
“I, Jacinus Aurelius Archane, now take you Ariya to be my wife.” His hand slipped behind her back, brushing against her wings before resting against her shoulder blades. “In the presence of God and before the Aziza realm and the mortal world, I promise to be a loving, faithful, loyal husband to you. For as long as we both shall live.”
Ariya grinned, feeling his lips move into a smile once he leaned to kiss her.
“Both technically and figuratively,” Jace added.
Ariya brushed her fingers through his hair, peering down at him. “I, Ariya, now take you Jacinus Aurelius Archane to be my beloved husband and lifemate,” she spoke softly against the crown of his head, cradling him to her chest. “In the presence of Mawu-Lisa and before the Aziza realm and the mortal realm. I promise to be a loving, faithful and loyal lifemate, wife and friend to you, for as long as we both shall live.”
She felt his hand grab hers and raise it up. Despite the darkness, the bright shine of the moonlight shined across her silver ring. The Claddagh ring he had called it. The same piece of jewelry that had belonged to his mother who handed it down to him to give to his own beloved. Ariya remembered the tale he shared when he first placed it on her finger.
When worn as a ring it’s supposed to symbolize friendship and love, he had told her. Jace’s mother had come into contact with the woman who first owned it. Along with the gift came the legend of the goldsmith who molded it for his love. Shortly after, he was kidnapped and taken aboard a pirate ship and thus began their five year separation and still he promised to marry her.
“Thy beauty and brightness/And lightness is going/Under the bonnie brown waves of thy hair/Thy lips red and luscious/And blushes bright glowing/Smote me with love and sweetest despair,” Jace said softly, then kissed the ring. He wrapped his hand around hers so that their rings touched in a quiet clink. “Mo ghaol ort.” I love you.

Alex pulled up to the five story apartment complex in an unmarked van. She turned off the engine and retrieved the suitcases from the back storage. The larger suitcase held two levels: real plumbing equipment on the top and an unassembled sniper rifle under a foam cover in the bottom. The second suitcase housed another set of plumbing tools. Stepping out of the van, she slammed the door. A dark green shirt and matching shorts covered her curvaceous build, both rolled up to reveal her warm, glowing complexion. She'd lightly covered her body in lavender oil, hoping it would distract her target enough for her to get the job done.
She started toward the front of the complex. Her Browning Hi-Power nestled in her boot and tapped against her leg. This would be a quick job. Get in and get out unnoticed. She pressed the call button next to the typed name beneath the plastic covered panel: BOB DILLAR.
"What?" The voice came from a window on the side of the building.
Alex craned her head and looked up to the third story window. She raised her sunglasses to meet the stranger's gaze. Smiling, she put the charm on full force.
"Bob Dillar?"
His scrunched expression softened once he saw her. He smiled, revealing a set of ragged teeth. Some shone bright silver, clashing with those of an ivory yellow stain.
"That's me, baby. What can I do for you?"
"I'm here to check the plumbing in your apartment. We got a call you were having problems."
"Oh, yeah. Yeah. You don't look like a plumber from where I'm standing, though." The man winked and smiled. His charm was definitely on full force.
Alex shrugged to downplay the attempt at sexual tension. "Blame my father for giving me a love for water pressure at a young age."
He chuckled and ran a hand over his slick, gelled black hair. "Well, come on up. I'll give you a little tour."
The door buzzed. Alex collected her items and entered the building. Nice complex. Not a place she'd expected this Bob Dillar character to live, but nowadays, anything was possible. A man stood at the front desk talking to the caretaker. Walking toward the elevator, Alex tried to keep an eye on the pathway to the door, but the visitor kept her attention.
Tall, nicely built, a slight tan with neck-length, silky brown hair. He turned around, and their eyes locked like magnets through stylish, dark designer shades. He removed them, his stance cool and relaxed, his face structured with a strong, defined jaw line. His mesmerizing eyes denoted model-worthy good looks, and those eyes awoke a spirit within her that had been dormant for months. She wanted him, the attraction like an electric storm of fire in the coldness of her heart.
The loud ding of the elevator snapped her back to reality. She shook her head to focus back on the job at hand. There wasn't any time for this now. She couldn't be distracted.
Alex broke the gaze and rushed into the elevator hoping the doors wouldn't stall. Alone now, she exhaled, realizing she'd held her breath the entire time. She was here to do a job, not get sidetracked by a pretty face. Go in as soon as possible and get out even quicker. She inhaled and exhaled a few times and slowed her breathing.
"Easy girl," she said.
Alex tapped the '3' button, and the elevator ascended. She knelt down and began the usual preparations. Retrieving the gun from her black boot, she slipped it into the hidden holster at her hip for easier access. The elevator chimed once again, and the doors opened. She peeked out of the elevator, relieved to see the area devoid of people. A long, slightly dingy oriental throw rug in putrid green, red, and beige lined the hall in front of shiny white doors. She picked up her cases and walked along the hall, keeping an eye on the descending numbers hanging on the doors. 25...24...23.... 22. Bingo.
Alex cleared her mind, took a breath, and knocked on the door. Footsteps pattered on the other side, pursued by loud whispers. Orders were given, and a whispered argument followed. Her adrenaline spiked to full alert as the footsteps approached the door. The light on the peephole eclipsed before the door opened just enough to give her a full view of Bob Dillar, a pale man dressed in a thin, close-cropped tank top and beige pants around three sizes too big. He flashed his tainted smile again.
"Welcome, pretty lady plumber."
She chuckled. "You can show me where the problem is now."
"I would, but you see, it was a problem I reported days ago. A gentleman from Root Plumbing came by with a van much like yours. Only it had the company name on the side with a little blue wave logo under it." He gestured the lines of the design in the air. "So either you guys got your jobs crossed up back there, or you're not really who you say you are. And judging from that van and the call I made while you made your way up here, I'm thinking it's more the latter."
Okay, stay calm. This situation is easily adaptable. Just need a Plan B.
Dillar reached to his side, out of her view. And pointed a pistol in her direction. Alex stepped back and launched a kick, knocking the weapon from his hand. Another kick to his torso sent his body flying across the front room of the apartment. She stepped inside. The click of a barrel sounded to her right, and she turned. A man aimed a large grenade launcher right at her. Quick to retrieve her gun, she fired, knocking the man backwards, but not before he fired off one solid round.
Alex turned and dove outside the door, an explosion of red and orange fire breaking through the apartment, following her into the hall. She hit the side of the wall with a brute force that rendered her body limp. Her eyes grew heavy, and the heat of the explosion rose around her. The last sound she heard was the distant chime of the elevator doors opening and the thumping of footsteps coming toward her.

~Excerpt~
Julianna peered down at her program to skim the compositions. The photograph of the violinist, Andrew Graham, caught her eye right away. His soft features reminded her of a romantic hero from a fairytale. Calm eyes and a thin smile welcomed her. Disappointment set in her heart as the lights dimmed over the hall. She set the program down in her lap and joined in applause as the solo violinist and conductor took to the stage. Both took a bow before each took their places to begin the set.
The conductor nodded to the violinist and raised his wand to conduct the opening strings of Tchaikovsky’s None But the Lonely Heart. Julianna’s heart stopped for but a moment at the whimsical nature of the melody. The violinist stood, his eyes closed, lost in the sounds of the song that took him away from the present time.
Then it began.
The melodic high tones like that of a human voice sang to her of a love saddened and darkened by loss. A tragedy of lonesomeness. She found herself sitting forward and listening closely as if the notes spoke to her. The violinist closed his eyes until the last note was carried throughout the hall. He took a bow between the next set and continued as Julianna held her breath.
The spell continued with Frederic Chopin’s Nocturne in C Sharp Minor.
The opening notes of the string set the mood for the solo violin to step in. Once again, the voice spoke to her as if she were the only one in the hall. It enticed her to step out of her body and walk along the shores of the moonlight path. Watching the violinist’s body move with every note, she couldn’t help feeling the mimic consume her.
Something was alive now. A fire in her veins that once was an ember. They were connected in that moment with each rise of the crescendo and fall to the low whisper of notes. He reached out to her, exchanged his strength with her weakness and ignited her.
A single tear fell from her eye and down her cheek. It was as if something had awakened deep inside of her now with the sound of the music. Her heart beat faster as the music rose, speaking of a love that could never be tamed.
Her gloved hand gripped the seat as she watched the violinist lost in his world of song. She was transported away with him and they became one, the only two souls left in the world.
As the last notes started low and rose to a high, the strings ended the song with a soft epilogue of promise. The violinist stroked the soft notes to a mellow high-pitched end.
Julianna had to remind herself to breathe. She joined in the applause as the violinist took his bow before disappearing off stage.
Although the program was to continue for the duration of the next two hours, Julianna had to hold her breath in anticipation for the violinist’s return.
***
“What a wonderful program!”
“Took my breath away!”
“What did you think, Julianna? Julianna?”
Julianna looked up once she realized her name was called.
“My apologies, I didn’t realize…” She thought it rude to say she wasn’t paying attention. Instead, she smiled and took Phillip’s arm that he held out to her. “It was lovely, yes.”
“We’re going to meet the violinist and maestro in a few moments. They should be up here soon.”
She followed Phillip’s gaze to the scattered crowd in the hall on the lower level. The citizens looked handsome in their gowns and suits and couldn’t help smiling at the royal family—her family— as they took their exits.
“Come. I think I hear them on their way.” Phillip caressed Julianna’s hand on his arm and smiled warmly at her.
She forced a smile but she had to wonder if her nerves were apparent as her rapid heartbeat beneath her chest. The last time she was this nervous meeting someone was with Frederick on their first date in Central Park. Had this passionate musician sparked a renewed interest deep within her? Why did she feel this way meeting him?
An older gentleman in a black suit entered the balcony hall with a large smile on his face. He promptly bowed and then waited as each of the family was addressed. His Serene Highness King Frederick DeWinters and his wife, her Serene Highness Queen Marie Caroline Josef DeWinters. Then Prince Phillip, Duke Freeman, Princess Tiana, and, finally, Princess Julianna.
“May I present the maestro and solo violinist for this evening, Sir John Von Constatin and Andrew Graham.”
Julianna had to force herself to breathe once Andrew took her hand after greeting her family. A soft face and warm smile stared right back at her. Hands that tingled with the magic of music sent shivers throughout her body.
His voice, as if it were possible to compare, was even more magical and hypnotic than the instrument he breathed life into.
“It is a pleasure.” His voice wrapped around her and held on. She bowed her head and smiled.
***
Andrew was frozen in place as he looked into the princess’s dark eyes. There was something about them that was different from when he saw her enter earlier. She was alive now, perhaps enraptured by him as he was her. He wanted to tell her to stay that way. To allow herself to feel and release the tugs of sorrow she carried around on her shoulders. She was more beautiful now with the renewed freedom than she had been before. But it was not his place and this was certainly not the time.
Instead, he gave a short bow and raised her hand to his lips where he gently kissed the back. “It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Your Highness.” He wasn’t sure if it was the proper greeting. He had been all over the world with his concerts and tried to remember each custom that was particular to the country. But all thought and reason had left him as he watched her.
She nodded. “You play beautifully, Mr. Graham. I’m honored to have been a part of your audience while you were in town.”
“The honor is mine,” he said finally breaking his gaze to look at the rest of her family. “I rarely have the chance to play to such a delightful family.”
“How long will you be in town, Mr. Graham?” Marie Caroline asked.
“I should be leaving back home to the states tomorrow in a few days or so.”
“Ah. Well, we were to have a banquet for the club. We would love to have you join us.”
“I’m sure the young man has other engagements to attend, my dear,” Frederick Sr. said as he caressed his wife’s hand. “Other concerts perhaps?”
“Another one in New York, yes. I should be leaving in a few days.” Andrew felt his body grow warm as he saw Julianna’s gaze on him out of the corner of his eye. Her head fell slightly as he announced his leave and although they had met just that evening, he didn’t want to leave her either.
“Well, we would love to have you over for tea before then.”
Andrew smiled and nodded. “I would love to attend, Your Highness.” He met Julianna’s gaze and immediately smiled. “It would be an honor. I should be heading back. It was a pleasure meeting all of you.”
Julianna tried to ignore the disappointment in her heart as she watched him turn and leave. If she didn’t speak now, the moment would pass her by. Something deep inside was drawing her toward Andrew, something she couldn’t explain…only feel.
“Please excuse me.” She noticed Phillip’s curious gaze toward her as he moved closer. Lifting her dress, she followed Andrew to the backstage where he was gently setting his violin down into his case. She wasn’t sure what to say. The moment she saw him, dressed in his suit, carefully setting his instrument down with the utmost care, she knew she couldn’t let him go so easily. She wanted to see him again.
“Mr. Graham.”
He turned and looked at her. A slight flush brushed across his pale skin and he immediately straightened himself once he saw her. “Your Highness, is there something I can do for you?”
“Your compositions are mesmerizing,” she found herself saying. She scolded herself in her head. What kind of idiotic thing was that to say? The doubt in her mind disappeared as soon as he smiled, making him appear more boyish.
“Thank you, my lady. I have to say that’s the highest honor I’ve ever received.”
“Oh no, I don’t believe that.” She walked closer to him, finding herself relaxing more in his presence. “You’ve won many awards including a Grammy and you’ve been in more esteemed company than myself, I’m sure.”
His handsome face scowled slightly in thought and he nodded. “More esteemed perhaps, but none that is so flattering and meaningful to me.”
Julianna noticed how close she stepped toward him. His blue eyes faced hers and she could feel the heat of his body drawing her closer to him. The spotlights, she tried to tell herself. It had to be the spotlights from the stage. He was still perspiring, beads of sweat forming around his forehead and temples. His breath was slightly labored and from here she could sense his heartbeat still racing. He looked at her in a way that made her feel desired. A feeling she hadn’t felt since Frederick died. In fact, this man…this Andrew Graham, was igniting a host of feelings that had been dormant since Frederick’s death.
“I was hoping to see you again,” Andrew said suddenly. He laughed a little. “I’m sorry.” He stepped back, dabbing his forehead a little. “I shouldn’t have been forward.”
“Actually,” she reached out, touching his sleeved arm. Despite the material there, her hand warmed with the touch. “I was hoping to see you. My mother-in-law invited you for tea and brunch but I was hoping to spend some time with you. Just you and I. I don’t want you to think that I’m trying anything. Or that I do this often.” Julianna nearly jumped when she felt his touch on her arm. Something magnetic was happening between them but she wasn’t quite sure what. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to define it for fear the magic would be lost. Judging from the look in his eye, she hoped he felt the same way, too.
***
Andrew couldn’t believe what he was doing. He was actually trying to court a princess. A beautiful regal woman who was part of a royal family. It wasn’t his intention to get involved with anyone. He had made that promise to his heart and himself after one loss. He would lose himself in his music and tours. That was where he found solace. But as he looked into Princess Julianna’s beautiful eyes, felt her warm, comforting touch on him and the closeness of her body to his, he knew he wanted her near. The moment he heard her voice behind him, he was sure it was a residual from his thoughts about her. Since he saw her watching from the audience, he couldn’t stop thinking about her and was more than reluctant to take his eyes off her.
And now she stood before him, desiring to see more of him as he did her. All he could do was oblige her.
Andrew nodded, placing his hand over hers on his arm. “I would be most honored, my lady.”
Julianna’s smile widened and he swore his heart leapt in his chest. “Wonderful. You can come by the palace tomorrow if you are free. I’m sure we would love to hear more of your wonderful compositions.”
“I’ll be there.”

“Would you tell me about how you became a—Nightwalker?”
Jace walked to her and sat down next to her, all the while holding her gaze. He leaned in toward her, reaching out to caress her cheek with the back of his hand. My, are you a beautiful vision, gradh.
Ariya’s eyes widened. If she deciphered correctly, she believed he called her love. “I—thank you,” she said, shifting her position.
“So you can read even me now.”
She nodded. “I tried to stop it, but it’s too late now. The elemental that haunts me will eventually find me.”
“But how?”
Ariya swung her legs over to the side of the bed and leaned over. “I don’t know much about it. My father may have known something about the legend and the severity of damage it could cause but he died before I could find out where it’s from or what it will do.” Screams echoed within her memory. In her mind’s eye, she saw her parents hauled into the night air. She quickly replaced the thought of something more pleasant. The creature could now be feeding off her memories and fear if she wasn’t too careful. She felt Jace’s strong, muscled arm wrap around her and a sense of relief washed over her body.
“I won’t let anything happen to you, Ariya,” he said softly. “None of us will. I’ve alerted the Patriarchs to keep watch.”
“How can you kill a creature you can’t see coming?” Ariya’s voice strained with the hint of fear for the answer.
Jace placed his hand on hers and smiled. “Maybe not see but I can makes use of my other senses.”
Just as he said these words, he tenderly caressed her skin with his thumb. She looked up at him and saw a look she hadn’t seen before, until now. Softness covered his face and his eyes warmed in invitation. He leaned in and she waited with the anticipation of his lips upon hers. His mouth was warm, inviting and enticing her to open and allow him entrance deeper into her. Ariya’s body tingled with desire for him. The sensitive area between her legs warmed, she trembled with each caress of his tongue against hers. He slowly moved in closer, wrapping his arms around her and urging her to lie back on the bed. She welcomed his body, finding comfort in the weight crushing down on hers.
“Jace, I—” Her mind fought against her body, tempted to give into the warmth he spread across her.
“Perhaps we can willingly bring him here to fight me, man to man,” Jace said nonchalantly. “So to speak.”
Ariya wasn’t sure if the anger he arose in her was from the mood breaking or his deception into making her think she was wanted by him in those few sweet moments. Either way, she felt rage boiling to the top and before she could calm herself, it escaped her. “This isn’t a game, Jace!”
“I understand that. I also understand that you have to care about someone before you lose them.” He climbed off the bed. “Which should make me pretty safe after all.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?”
Standing, he then turned and gave a little bow before heading to the dresser to retrieve a large comforter.
“I’ll take the couch in the living room while you rest here.” Jace walked to the bedroom door and placed his hand on the doorknob. “If you need me, I’ll be on a hunt.”
The door closed behind him and she saw the image in his mind; an anticipation for another feed on a beautiful woman he picked up somewhere off the streets. She sat on the bed with the kiss still lingering on her lips and mind. Despite her early words to remain far removed from Jace and his world, she couldn’t help feeling an absence in her heart once he left the room. Consequently, and for a moment, she wondered what it’d be like to be his.
* * * *
Ariya was in deep sleep when the door slowly creaked opened. Her conscious mind didn’t notice the figure in the room though his presence was strong enough to awaken her subconscious. She hovered between the two existences, trying to control the rise of temperature in her body.
“Ariya, don’t be afraid.” Jace’s voice was smooth, deep and inviting. A soft cloud of comfort filled every inch of the room. She stirred in her sleep. “It’s just me.”
Her eyes remained closed but she could still sense him across the room within the darkness.
Jace slowly removed his jacket, tossing it onto the floor. He watched her while he unbuttoned his white, long sleeved shirt, exposing the strong hard lines of his torso underneath. He moved toward her in long sleek steps with the grace of a cunning cat closing in on its prey.
Ariya smiled at the feel of him maneuvering onto her body. She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him down in a kiss. Their mouths mated in a heated passion as his lips moved to claim hers. Their heavy breaths broke the silence of the room. His body writhed against hers and she felt his hand slip down to her thighs, slowly moving closer to the innermost part of her. His body was like liquid fire to her, igniting a passion that had long lay dormant within her. His fingers seemed to hold electricity within him and each touch sent a wave of pleasure throughout her body. He moved toward her warm center, his fingers teasing the opening, driving her to insanity. He broke from her and leaned to kiss her cheek before his lips gently caressed her ear.
“Do you want me, Ariya?” Jace’s voice was like that of soft bell chimes. “Do you want to give yourself over to me?”
Ariya thought of herself in that Shelly girl’s position. Although she couldn’t partake of his blood, she would take of his body and give into the feeling that haunted her since she laid eyes on him.
“Oh, Jace,” she said softly. “I want you.”

“Angela, darling!” Her publisher, Darlene Fennel, greeted her with a kiss on each of her cheeks. “I want to introduce you to some very important people.” Her refined accent smoothed over each name with ease, and she gestured toward the small crowd surrounding her. Angela put on her best smile and nodded as each person said their ‘hellos’ and ‘evenings’. Then she saw him, and immediately her body froze.
“And this is Paul Sumner, our in-house publicist,” Darlene said with a grin and a wave of her hand.
The distinguished Brit was a few inches taller than her now that she saw him up close. His handsome, angular face accentuated his strong bone structure. Boy, did he have a clean-cut, sexy jaw line. She breathed in the spicy scent of his aftershave mixed with his natural male scent. He wasn’t a skinny man, nor too large, but she could tell the way his suit formed over his broad shoulders and strong body that he spent quite a bit of time at the gym. Angela had to focus so she wouldn’t be lifted away on the dreamy scent. Something about him proved irresistible, but she couldn’t quite put a finger on it.
“You know, come to think of it. I believe that’s how he met his wife once she sold her first book. How is Sadie doing these days?”
His back straightened as he nervously shifted from side to side. Hmm, I guess he didn’t like the mention of the wife. Which doesn’t change the fact that he is still married to her. He cleared his throat, obviously trying to regain his composure with a smile on his face.
“She’s doing well, I suspect,” he said, his voice a little annoyed.
Angela couldn’t deny her heart dropping at the sound of the ‘w’ word. She took note of the frown that crept upon his face once the word was spoken. Ugh! Of course! He couldn’t be looking that good and be single. She took a deep breath, placed the best smile she could plaster on her face, and focused on Darlene’s words.
“He is responsible for selling the most hard to sell books.”
Angela forced her eyes to look at Paul once again. “Well, I see how much faith you have in my book, Darlene.”
The tall redhead laughed politely and waved her hand toward Angela.
“Is this your first time in London, Angela?” Paul asked, turning his head slightly to the side.
Why did he have to say her name like that? Something about the way the sound came from him struck her, as if she was hearing it for the first time, his voice smooth, like hot liquid that oozed into her ears. She tried to calm her heart from beating so fast and forced herself to maintain her composure. Get it together, girl. This is a married man.
“Yes, actually it is,” she heard herself say.
“Has Darlene given you the proper tour of our beautiful city?”
Angela’s mind raced before she spoke. “Oh, I don’t know if I’d have time for all of that with my work and all.”
“Surely you can spare a little time. The sunrise and sunsets are especially breathtaking around this time of year. You have to catch it like Halley’s Comet, though, as they don’t show their faces too often with our weather. Shades of primrose, I recall. Soft against the fiery horizon. I know a cafĂ© that has a wonderful view.”
“I thank you, but I may have to take a rain check on that.”
Paul nodded once. “It’ll be my pleasure to show you around.”
Air, that’s what she needed right about now. And more champagne. Definitely more champagne.
“Will you all excuse me? It was a pleasure meeting you.” Angela made sure she looked at each of the surrounding members of the group before she turned to Paul. His scent intoxicated her, and if she stood there a moment longer, she would be in his arms in a second.
