DAY IN THE SUN by LaVerne Thompson

DAY IN THE SUN by LaVerne Thompson

If you run from love can you hide?

As a member of the ruling class on her planet, Callie had no say in who she would marry. Her mother made the decision for her. She'd never even met the man she'd be bound to for the rest of her life. Her parents left her no choice. She fled her planet and would-be husband for a chance to live her life as she chose.

Landing on the back water planet earth, Jaran had one plan: to find Callie his reluctant bride and decide if he wanted to be married to her. No woman should be worth this kind of trouble. But it didn't take him long to realize he wanted her by his side. But she ran from him once already. How can he convince her to stop running long enough to love him?

Callie bent down to pick up her sandals, when she straightened the movements of a swimmer some ten miles out in the water caught her attention. She hadn’t noticed him before. Even from that distance, she could tell the body in the water appeared to be male. She wondered if he’d swum out from the beach or from the boat anchored even farther behind him, either way it was an unusually long swim. Although she didn’t need to do it, she raised her hand above her glasses as though to shade her eyes, but really lowered her sunglasses and took her contacts off to better see him. She placed the contacts in a side pocket of her bag. The UV protection coated on the lens weakened her vision range. It was still vastly better than humans but without the glasses and contacts it would be sharper.

Minus the artificial covering over her eyes, the figure out in the water became clearer. She blinked, my gods! The man must have swum ten miles already, and still had more to go. Mesmerized, she watched his arms glide out of the ocean. Long lean fingers sliced effortlessly through the water. Shoulders and biceps bulged with the necessary muscle and strength, allowing everything to work together for him to swim at the speed he did. If she didn’t know better, she’d swear he was one of the mermen from Farris Pei. But since she saw no fins, she was fairly certain it was a human male out there, just one in exceptional shape.

Callie didn’t realize she’d moved until she stood at the edge of the tide. Stationing herself at a place on the beach where he would be able to see her, she waited for him to come to her. As the distance closed between them the more of him she could see. The sun glistened off hair so blond it was almost white, but she couldn’t quite make out his facial features. The way he moved struck her as odd, he almost never seemed to raise his head to breathe as he swam.

Finally, he reached a point where he could stand in the water. At least six feet four inches of perfect male rose out of the ocean, water reluctantly dripped from a body fashioned by a loving god’s hand. Broad shoulders appeared first narrowing into a slender waist. With each step, the ridges of his abs rippled as he moved, the remaining droplets glistened off skin bare to the waistband of his swim trunks. He raised his hands to push wet shoulder-length hair back and away from his face, revealing a face sculptured by a master craftsman, one without flaw.

“Oh, Mercy!”

“We’re not like humans in every way,” he explained. “Our bodies are stronger and our senses more refined. For example, I can smell your heat as we speak.” He looked down below James’ belt and saw the evidence of his arousal pressed tightly against the material of his slacks. The human followed his gaze and swallowed hard without speaking.

“There’s no shame in wanting either of us,” said Grath. “If we’re correct, you’re both our fated mates. Any attraction is completely natural and expected.”

Adam spoke up. “But we’re males. Do you realize we’re males?”

Zlade smirked and came close enough to Adam that less than a foot separated them. “Take off your pants.”

The human’s mouth fell agape, but surprisingly, the quieter human did as asked. He unbuttoned his pants and slid down the zipper. This time his brother didn’t protest on his behalf.

“Very good, Adam.” Zlade had dreamt of finding his mate for countless nights. Years of abstinence had made him an irritable Mandor. Now he had his personal fantasy ready and willing. It would be his ultimate pleasure to show these males what they’d be missing if they refused to return to Mythios.

He bent down and tugged Adam’s pants down past his erection. His cock was impressive for such a small species. It was hard, pointing up like a virile rod.

“It seems you’re just as aroused as your brother. Do you fantasize about having my cock in your ass, little human? Or do you crave my mouth sucking you?”

Zlade didn’t receive an answer. He could hear Adam’s heavy breathing, and he watched a drop of clear pre-cum slip from the tip of his dick. He petted the silky shaft, admiring the color and shape of the human penis. He wondered if James’ would be exactly the same, or had unique traits.

“You asked if we were looking for a male. Well, there are no females on Mythios. We have no desire or need for them.” Zlade knelt on one knee and licked the head of Adam’s cock. The human let out a groan followed by a shaky breath. “Don’t fight it. If you like it, tell me so.”

“I like it.”

“What?” James shouted.

Zlade gave Adam what he wanted. He swallowed the full length of his warm cock, pressing it between his tongue and pallet as he sucked with just the right amount of pressure to drive the human wild. He got the desired reaction. Adam let out his breath, his body slumping as he threaded his hands into Zlade’s hair. He was well aware James and Grath watched the intimate show, and he hoped it aroused James enough to want to join in.

He savored the tart taste of the human dick, sucking long and hard, determined to bring Adam to a desperate precipice. There was no way these men would agree to travel to Mythios with strangers if there was nothing in it for them. Sex could come first, and love could develop with time. For Grath and Zlade, their fates were already sealed. As soon as they bit their mates, the bond would forever connect them to the humans. Nothing would come between them.

“Oh my God,” Adam cried out. It was the warning he needed. Zlade pulled back, not allowing the human to finish. He stood up and waited for a reaction.

One of the walls opened up, and a bright pink man walked in confidently. They laughed harder. Heather got off the platform bed and walked up to the man. He was brilliant, human-looking except for his bright pink skin, which was hard, almost metal-plated, and shiny like scales. His fingers were long sharp claws, and he had a long tail with a hand on its end that swished when he walked.

Heather touched his rock-hard chest. “Come out now, Ethan, before I kick your arse! I will say I love the pink. How did you get it so bright? Oh I so forgive you kidnapping us. He is yummy.”

What the hell was going on? Opal thought.

Heather took a step back towards her as the man blinked, and Opal could now see his eyes were yellow. “Wow, great contact lenses.”

His tail moved back and forth, and the hand at the end opened and waved.

“Oh. My. God,” Heather squealed.  “What great effects! The tail looks so real.”

Opal laughed and moved to join Heather. She loved Ethan, and she decided she would to buy him a thank you present for cheering her up. She smiled up at Mr. Pink. “Hi. I know my friend sent y...” She stopped mid-sentence as the wall opened again. This time a bright yellow man walked in. He was brighter than a daisy and had sky blue hair.

Opal took several steps towards him, drawn to his beauty. Staring up into purple eyes she sighed. Contact lenses were great. He was tall, easily over seven feet or more, and the chest she was currently looking at was to die for, big, broad, and she bet hard, even without the effects of the shiny scale plating covering his body.

Licking her lips, she groaned. “Yum, yum.” Mr. Pink was hot, but Mr. Yellow had her hand involuntarily fanning her face.

Walking the rest of the way to him, she looked up at his masculine face and moaned out. “Ethan really outdid himself with you. You look freaking awesome. Well you both do, but…” She reached up and touched his chest to see if it felt as hard as it looked. Mr. Yellow blinked and gave her a startled look, and then he smiled, showing wicked long sharp white fang-like teeth. Reaching up she touched one sharp point. “Wow, these even feel real.”

Her finger caught on the front tooth tip, and a drop of blood started to drip down into his mouth. “Ouch.”

Opal snatch her hand away, but quick as lighting his clawed hand gently pulled it back, and into his mouth. He sucked on her finger. Shivering, she clamped her legs together and tried to move her eyes from his intense stare. The bright purple orbs seemed to darken, trapping her as she stood on tip-toes leaning into him.

Heather’s voice snapped her out of the staring contest. Biting her lip so she wouldn’t laugh as Heather groaned, “Opal, you have to lick their skin. Whatever Ethan did, or used to make them this color, it doesn’t come off, and they taste like chocolate.”

Turning to watch she giggled as Heather licked Mr. Pink’s muscular chest. Opal grinned and tuned back to Mr. Yellow and pointed to his chest. She needed to check this out. “May I?”

He grinned and pulled her closer. Hesitantly at first, she leaned her head in and licked his hard muscled chest. Yum. He did taste good. Chocolate. Mmm. Her favorite. He felt odd. His hard plated skin felt as smooth as satin. She pulled back and tapped on it, wondering what Ethan had used. He chuckled as she continued to explore.

Heather laughed as Mr. Pink picked her up and started to walk to one of the panel walls. “Oh my God, Opal, you don’t think Ethan paid these guys to sleep with us?”

Staring up at the gorgeous model face, she sighed. Great, just great. Ethan thought she was so desperate to lose her virginity he’d ordered male escorts, and did them up the same as his alien shoot he had done today, knowing her fantasy of being with an alien.

Heather was now trying to get down as she yelled, “I can, we can, find our own men.”

Mr. Pink growled and held Heather with both hands.

Heather continued. “We are not that desperate to get laid. To sleep with a guy our friend hired to have sex with us, even if you are hot.”

Mr. Pink stopped and placed Heather on the ground. He then looked at Mr. Yellow, who grinned and nodded like they were making up their minds about something. Mr. Pink chuckled and stalked Heather who’d been backing away from him. He picked her up again and grinned then, walked to the panel and left, leaving Opal with Mr. Yellow.  He shrugged and stared down at her.

Opal smiled at him and tried to think of a way to word things without insulting him, and him picking her up like Heather and being carted away. “Ah, yeah, what she said. I can totally find my own ma—” She screamed as he picked her up like she weighed nothing at all.

The wall panel opened up, and Opal saw Mr. Pink taking Heather down a hallway, her friend screaming profanities as Mr. Yellow took her in the opposite direction.

Excerpt:

Curtis MacDonald watched the woman of his dreams. It was his job, after all. The world of stars opened up as Shannon Madison worked the controls in the observation room deep inside of Area 51. It was no shock that she’d turned out to be an astronomer since her mother had come from out there just as Curtis had. He didn’t get romantic often, but MacDonald and his small group of aliens, Milton, Ross and Gavin, had been protecting Shannon, the secret hybrid, for several months.

Milton Hexner guarded the main door and Gavin Parchner was stationed at the other exit on the opposite end of the room. Ross Gronbuck stood nearby checking his Smartphone for any alerts. They looked the same as all Keelon aliens did in the deserts of Nevada, brown haired, brown eyed, and Caucasian. Their strength was superior, but they blended in well. Being a Keelon alien was top secret so they worked for the government.

Area 51 was known as Dreamland, and for the four male lovers, who’d been bonded as a fighting team before they’d left their home planet, this was a dream. On earth, they’d found a planet with less war and more women. Specifically, they’d found their woman. However, claiming Shannon was dangerous. She was at Dreamland for her protection. Still, there was so much she didn’t know and the aliens did. Orders were orders, and telling her the complete truth was not allowed.

She studied the night sky through the ultra-powered telescope, and Curtis examined her. Long brown hair and dark brown eyes set off her lovely pale skin. She was tall and slim with subtle curves in the right places. Her temper was even and nearly docile in a way. While she complained about being kept here for observation, she hadn’t tried to escape.

No human woman Curtis had known in the twenty years he’d been on Earth would take that without demanding a phone call, a lawyer and throwing a serious fit. Shannon truly was a human/Keelon hybrid.

Shannon turned a few dials. “It’s such a clear night. I love it.”

“We really should close up stuff here and go to bed,” Curtis said.

Shannon loved to stay up all night and sleep all day. However, in the cover of darkness was when the Keelons from the home world seemed to make their visits. The last thing anyone needed was for Shannon to spot an alien vessel. She had no clue some aliens had found peace and safety on Earth while others wanted to use and abuse humans.

“Stop it. This isn’t hurting anyone.” She flipped a few switched. “Look at that. More test flights?”

“Probably.” Curtis nodded to Ross.

Ross shrugged.

Then Ross’ phone alarmed. “We need to get you back to your quarters and safety.”

“What? You said it’s our Air Force testing new things. It’s nothing really dangerous. I’m tired of hiding out in my quarters.” Obviously, she trusted them. She vented about the restrictions the powers at the top had put on her, but Shannon wasn’t a fool. She understood that the men were under orders of their own and might not be able to tell her the absolute truth even if they wanted to indulge her. Curtis loved her honesty and never took the woman’s frustrations personally.

Curtis hated lying to her but her safety mattered more.

“I’m sorry, but we really need to go!” Curtis shut down the observation room and grabbed her around the waist.

This time Shannon struggled and wrestled herself from his grip. “I’m sick of this. Tell me the truth!”

Gavin was the warrior of the group and picked her up so she couldn’t escape his grasp. “We will discuss things in your quarters where you are safe.”

His superior strength trumped any of Shannon’s efforts to get loose. Finally, she folded her arms and pouted as he carried her through the halls.

Curtis admired her stubborn streak and beauty. He couldn’t tell her the truth, but the alert notified the men of another Keelon vessel in Earth’s orbit. With the constant visits, the facts couldn’t be withheld from her much longer. For the first few months, she’d been contained in the lab with only a modular pod for privacy. Eventually, the doctors would run out of tests and excuses. Now that she had more freedom and had explored base within in her access level, the reality would reveal itself.

Once inside their room, Ross locked the door. Gavin gently set Shannon onto the couch in the common area. Shannon had a bedroom to herself, and the men shared another. They guarded her constantly. A bond and attraction had built between the five of them, but they had yet to cross the line. If she made the first move, it’d be fine, but Curtis wouldn’t break the rules on his own. He took his role as group leader and the safety of Shannon and all the people in Dreamland seriously.

Shannon’s silence made Curtis look over at her. While she wouldn’t try to escape, she had frequently vented her frustrations. Her arms were folded as she glared at them.

“What’s going on? I’ve been here for months and months. I’ve gone through all the tests and interviews. I have no memories of any close encounters. I believe aliens are out there, but I don’t believe I’ve been taken onto any ships or that I’m in any danger. No nightmares, night terrors, implants, missing time. Nothing.” Her tone was calm and firm.

“You’re not in danger here,” Ross replied.

Milton sat next to Shannon. “We don’t have all of the answers, but we won’t let anyone hurt you.”

Curtis watched their peacemaker try to soothe the woman they all loved. One woman for a group of men was the Keelon way because they were a warring world genetically modified to breed males over females. There were plenty of ménage relationships around Dreamland that involved groups of alien men, but Shannon just believed there were more men than women so necessity had been the mother of invention.

Ross walked up to Curtis and nodded. “There’s a ship in orbit,” he said quietly. “We need to stay here and distract her somehow.”

“We can’t do that,” Curtis said.

“You don’t think it’s time to prove ourselves and be honest? She’s smart, and now, she’s grown too suspicious. Her patience is worn thin, and she needs proof.” Ross was the most logical minded.

The group counted on Ross for intelligence and seeing the big picture, and Curtis trusted him. Clearly, it was time to make a change and hope for the best. There was no doubt that all of the men wanted to move the relationship forward, but there would be no way to go back if it didn’t work.

“Fine,” Curtis said.

“Fine what?” Shannon asked. “I thought I could trust you four, and now, I’m not even allowed to be in the observation room? I’m just being held for no reason?”

She’d always known there was more out there. ET had been her favorite movie growing up. When she looked up at night, she always wanted to see something. Not just discover a comet or see a shooting star, but truly to explore. She’d hoped she’d get the opportunity to use the amazing equipment here to get an even better look.

“There are reasons, but we can’t give you all of the details.” Curtis sat next to her.

The four men moved around her, and she felt safe and warm. All the masculine bodies softened her need to argue. Wanting for more than protection from them had helped keep her cooperative. The hope of finding out aliens were real and here on earth was the rest of her motivation not to be a nuisance. Being brought to Area 51 wasn’t something one could request, but she’d ended up here and she wanted to explore and make the most of it. No university or research group had technology like Dreamland.

“What is the government going to do to me?” she asked.

“Nothing. You’re safe here.” Gavin put his hand on her shoulder.

The strong touch made her relax yet sparked her need for affection. These men had too much self control. “Then why am I here? I never discovered anything in the stars worthy of sequestering me. Trust me, I’ve looked at every photo I’ve ever taken, and there were no UFO or top secret planes.”

“True but alien abductions are up. You are here for your protection,” Curtis said.

“Is it really that dangerous for me?” she asked.

“You want to be abducted?” Ross shook his head. “It’s not pleasant.”

“You don’t have every woman in America locked up here. Besides, all aliens can’t be mean and cruel.” She shrugged.

Milton knelt at her feet. “But groups of people with superior technology and power will take advantage of the weaker ones. Human history has taught us that much. Ask the Native Americans. There are some passive alien races out there, but the Keelons aren’t one of them.”

“Who are the Keelons?” she asked.

“The race of aliens that have visited Earth the most in the past fifty years. The abduction rate from them is highest. Some of their ships crashed here decades back,” Ross explained.

“There are specimens? They’ve been examined?” The idea of seeing a real alien excited her.

Gavin nodded. “Actually some are still alive. The humans didn’t kill everyone. We lived.”

“You?” She laughed and pinched his arm. “You feel pretty human to me.”

In a flash, Gavin’s skin went from human to snake like and then back.

She turned and remembered she was surrounded. Surprise and intrigue mixed inside of her. “All of you?”

“Don’t panic. We’re on Earth’s side.” Curtis smiled.

“Side? Wait. What do you really look like?” She’d grown attached to them looking the way they did. So strong and sexy. She rubbed a hand over the snakeskin. “Are you snake people?”

Milton shook his head. “No, not snakes. Our skin can modify itself based on the environmental needs. That’s all.”

“So you’re humanoid. Work for the government. Why are you guarding me?” she asked.

“We’re protecting you from the aliens. The Keelons are a warring people who take what they want,” Gavin said.

“What would they want with me? Obviously, they know the stars better than I do.” She watched Gavin and Milton share a look.

“We can’t give you all the details. We’ve got our orders,” Curtis said.

While she wanted to push, she’d seen the military’s discipline and access restrictions for herself. Few people talked to her casually. If she couldn’t talk to the men about that, she had to change the subject.

“You want me to do what?” District Attorney Elliot Reynolds raked his fingers through his short brown hair while small drops of sweat trickled down his flushed face.
Zintssar, the oldest brother of the Arridian clan, took a deep, calming breath. He’d been negotiating treaties between his home planet and other worlds for years. But this was personal, and he was quickly losing patience. “We want you to make arrangements for us to take Jenilyn Montgomery with us when we travel home.”
Elliot’s eyes widened, and his hand came up to lightly clasp his throat. “You’re talking about the young woman that was arraigned on embezzlement charges.”
Zintssar nodded. “Yes, the female with long brown hair and green eyes. We want to take her to Kilara.”
The district attorney paced back and forth in the small room. “I don’t understand.”
Zintssar sighed and glanced over at his brothers. Kernztssar, better known as Kernz, looked as if he could happily dismember the disagreeable human, while Xortztssar appeared bored. “We live on Kilara now. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Federation’s program to cultivate habitable planets for food. Our home world, Arridia, was awarded a spot on Kilara. My brothers and I are going to make it our home for the next year or so.”
Elliot frowned and gave a slight shake of his head. “No, I mean I don’t understand why you want Ms. Montgomery.”
“She’s our destined mate.”
Elliot took a couple of shuffling steps back, his mouth dropping open. “She’s your…I mean, how…When did you meet her?”
Zintssar struggled not to laugh at the struggling man. “We haven’t met her yet.”
“Then how do you know she’s your mate?”
“Because her scent draws me like none other ever has before.” The eldest son, and only the eldest, in an Arridian clan could recognize their mate from her scent. The brothers were destined to share the same mate, as their fathers before them. Zintssar took two steps and looked down on the human male. “Will you make the arrangements?”
Elliot’s lips trembled, his hands gripping the back of a chair so hard his knuckles turned white. “I can’t do that, Zintssar. She’s just been arraigned today. She’s got to stand trial for the charges that were brought against her.”
Kernz moved forward to stand next to Zintssar. “How long will that take?”
The district attorney crossed his arms over his chest and raised his chin a fraction of an inch. “It could be anywhere from a month to six months to even get a date for the trial. You know how long it took to bring Edward Davis to trial.”
Zintssar growled softly. He and his brothers were on Earth to testify at Edward’s trial. They had helped their good friends, Andon and Tarik, rescue their mate when Edward kidnapped her and her brother. “We have to wait until some farce of a trial to take our mate home?”
“I’m sorry. I’m not trying to make you angry, but you may never get the chance to take her home. It has to be her decision to accept your claim, and she might be found guilty of the charges brought against her.”
Zintssar shook his head. “No! She’s innocent.”
Elliot pursed his lips, tilting his head to the side. “How do you know that?”
“You wouldn’t understand.” Zintssar shifted his gaze to Kernz and then back to Elliot. “It’s a trait my people have, similar to your telepathy but different. We feel other’s emotions, and there’s a noticeable difference in someone who’s being false. Jenilyn Montgomery is not guilty of the charges against her.”
Sighing, Elliot dropped into a chair. “I’m sorry to say it might not matter, Zintssar. Our people base their opinion on the facts presented in the case. If the facts are compelling enough, the jury will find her guilty.”
Kernz’s nostrils flared, and he moved to stand over the district attorney. “What happens to her if they find her guilty?”
Elliott swallowed hard. “She’ll be sent to a state penitentiary for a set amount of time. The usual sentence is anywhere from ten to twenty years, depending on the circumstances.”
Zintssar felt his canines drop as he suppressed a growl. “Not acceptable.”
Elliot stood and moved toward the door. “You may not have a choice. I’m sorry, but it’s not in my power to just give her to you.”
Zintssar moved forward until he was crowding Elliott against the wall. He felt his lip turn up in a half smile as he watched the nervous tic in the man’s jaw. “Then let me make myself perfectly clear, Mr. Reynolds. We want our mate. Your government has shown great interest in the clean energy sources from our home world, Arridia.” He moved even closer and let his grin widen when his brothers moved in on each side, effectively boxing in the nervous man. “Your world leaders have already begun talks of trade with our father.” He leaned down until his breath stirred the short hairs on Elliot’s head. “I can promise you those talks will stop until we have our mate safely in our home on Kilara.”

~Excerpt~
Major Mason Nowland monitored the formation of his unit. The new planes were maneuvering well. After repeated drills and tests, a smaller crew had been granted permission to take them for a little run locally. They’d been put through the paces over the southern Nevada desert, and it was time to call it a day. He gave the command to head back to their home base in California. The three others acknowledged, and they set the course.
The new aircrafts were great for stealth fighting, but Mason couldn’t figure out their exact purpose. As with most things government, it was need-to-know only. His team had the best pilots on the west coast so if anyone could fly these babies, it was them. They’d certainly tested well in the field. The new aircraft were powerful and heavily shielded, but their weapons were minimal. Perhaps, that part was top secret and would be added later. The military did things for their own reasons, and he’d long ago learned to keep the questions to himself.
Watching the other three, he couldn’t wait to get back to base and have a little R&R with his team. As long as Sammie, the only woman in the unit, didn’t go finding a boyfriend the group was happy. He felt guilty for not being able to tell her the truth about him and the other guys being of non-human origin, but the government had its reasons and ways. None of them were fair. The three men didn’t have girlfriends either. Loyalty was first to the flag then to the unit and so on. Not that it stopped the connections and passions from happening, but so far the men hadn’t acted on their feelings for Sammie. How would they be able to explain things without telling her the truth?
A quake in the atmosphere bounced the plane slightly. The radio buzzed with attempts to identify it. His flight team was on their toes and doing their job. Then Mason saw the UFO behind them. Identification was pointless. Escape was vital.
“Full speed! Out run it.”
Mason radioed the base for backup and help, but the communications were cutting in and out. The Keelon’s alien technical superiority could not be discounted. A shockwave could knock the Air Force planes out of the sky, and Mason wanted to avoid a body count. Alien sightings, mostly Keelon vessels, were up. However, why they’d chosen here and now to make an appearance baffled Mason. It’d been over twenty years since he’d seen a ship like that. The six-year-old in him worried.
Now, he was no longer a child. Flying to save his life, Mason watched the alien ship keep pace. What did they want with four Air Force pilots on a test mission? There was no way Mason and his pals were going back. Mason had many theories, but in his career, this was the first time he’d had an alien encounter. What did they want? If it were nothing more than abducting humans, military personnel with weapons and witnesses seemed like a foolish target.
Their planes gave all the speed and power they could, but there was no outrunning a Keelon vessel. The closer it came, the more Mason recognized the alien ship from his nightmares. Abductions had been up. He’d heard that through the UFO watchers grapevine inside the military. The men always kept Sammie out of the loop as much as they could. She didn’t need to know the truth about aliens yet. Today, the truth had found them. No more denials or speculations for her. Aliens were real, and she’d have to believe it now.
As the group tried to out maneuver the larger vessel, Sammie’s voice cut through the static asking what the hell it was. Mason couldn’t answer. He had no idea if that ship was out to attack, abduct or observe. She didn’t need anyone to confirm it was a UFO.
A beam of light caught Sammie’s ship first. Why her? They were all about the same distance from the UFO. She wasn’t lagging behind at all. Mason worried about the aliens’ choice. Clearly observation wasn’t on the mission docket for the Keelons today. The beam pulled her ship in closer to the hull of the Keelon vessel. The others turned, without orders, and targeted what little weapons they had at the sourced of the beam and attacked. Mason joined them.
Sammie’s plane shook violently, and the Keelons beam cut out for a short time. As the men tried to radio her to see if she was injured, Mason found himself in knots. Nothing could happen to her. The men would never forgive themselves. It had nothing to do with the fact that she was the only woman in their squadron, but those reasons didn’t matter now. Mason had to keep it together for all of them.
Her radio stayed silent, but her plane was in the air. As she steered away from the Keelon vessel, another larger beam of light engulfed all four ships. The huge net momentarily stunned them all. Mason radioed for help from the base. They were under attack and possibly being taken prisoner.
Changing to the special Nevada frequency, he repeated his call for help in more detail. The odds of rescue weren’t very good. As the ships were drawn close to the UFO, a large door slid open. Mason tried to memorize it all. The details of Keelon vessels remained a mystery. Mason felt as if he were breathing a mist. The fog clouded his brain, and he shook his head for clarity.
Their crafts hovered just outside the Keelon ship’s entrance as Mason’s world went black. He had no regrets except one: Sammie had no idea how much she meant to the men. The Keelons had won this round, but Mason knew if his group lived, it wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.

A small white paper lying on the floor caught her attention. “Kevin!” When he didn’t answer she dropped the empty containers onto the table and started down the hall. “Kevin, get in here.”
Continued silence told her he wasn’t home. For the past six years, since her mother’s death, she’d had the responsibility of raising her younger brother. Their father had walked out before Kevin was born, and they hadn’t heard from him since. She’d given up her plans for college and settled into a receptionist’s job to support him. Taking a deep breath, she turned back toward the living room and grimaced. She was tired of coming home to chaos. The day Kevin turned eighteen she was going to make some hard decisions.
Caleigh was closing up the garbage bag when she heard the front door open. Grimly, she tied off the bag and hurried to confront her wayward sibling. She found him in the living room where he’d collapsed onto the sofa and switched on the television. Stubbornly, she walked over and turned off the movie he’d begun to watch.
“Hey, I’m watching that.”
“Did you have a party here today?” she asked.
Kevin snorted. “No, I’d hardly call having Benny over a party.”
“You told me you were going on a couple of job interviews today. What happened?”
“We went, and then we got hungry so we came here for some lunch.” He shrugged. “Nobody ever hires you the same day you apply. They always say they’ll call you.”
“I cleaned up quite a little picnic here. Who bought lunch?”
Kevin looked over at the dark television screen. “Benny treated us.”
Caleigh narrowed her eyes. “You’re lying, baby brother.” She pulled the receipt out of her pocket and threw it toward him. “You forgot to get rid of this.” Her fists clenched at her sides as she watched him grab for the small white paper. “How dare you use my credit card without asking?”
“You told me to use it if I needed it. Wasn’t that why you left it in the kitchen drawer?”
“For emergencies only, Kevin. I hardly think feeding your deadbeat friends falls into that category.” She held the credit card up in her hand. “Don’t bother to look for it again because I’m keeping it with me from now on.”
“Fine, take your damn card. I’ll get my own.”
She smirked, shaking her head. “I think you’ll find a job is a prerequisite for getting credit.” Sighing, she moved away as he turned the television back on. Ignoring him, she walked over and picked up the mail. Flipping through the envelopes her heart sank. There were so many bills and so little money. Her salary barely covered the payments and their small apartment.
She pulled one of the envelopes out that caught her eye. “Galactic Nuptials,” she mumbled. “What the hell is this?” Frowning, she checked again to make sure her name was on the front before she ripped it open and scanned the letter inside. Smothering a laugh, she read through it a second time more thoroughly.
“What is it?” Kevin asked, turning down the volume on the television.
Shaking her head, Caleigh grinned at him. “A mistake.” She glanced down at the letter. “Dear Ms. Davis. It’s our pleasure to inform you that your application to Galactic Nuptials has been approved, and a possible mate has been found. All that is necessary to move forward in meeting your life-mate is to schedule an interview and the mandatory medical physical. Please call our office at the number listed below to set up an appointment as soon as possible. We look forward to working with you to place you with your ideal life’s mate. Sincerely, Tarooka Meekers, Galactic Nuptials.” She tossed the letter in the trash pile. “What a screwup!”
“They approved it,” Kevin cried. He jumped off the couch and rushed to grab up the letter.
Caleigh narrowed her eyes. “What do you know about this?”
“We’re gonna be rich, sister dear.” He threw the letter down and grabbed Caleigh up in a bear hug, swinging her around.
“Put me down, right now.” Caleigh struggled to get free. “What have you done, Kevin?”
“Brought us in a load of money, for starters.” He picked up the envelope the letter came in. “Did you see this?” He pulled out a small card she’d overlooked. “They even sent a picture of your ideal mate.”
Caleigh ignored the picture in his hand. “What do you mean you’ve brought us in a load of money?” She could feel a knot forming in her stomach and knew that she wouldn’t like whatever he had to say.
“I mean a load of money. This place offers cash incentives for women to travel to other planets and marry guys.” He gave her a big grin. “They give a down payment and then you get the balance of the money after you spend three months with the guy.”
“I’m supposed to marry some alien so you can get a bunch of money?” she asked, incredulous.
He slapped his hands together and rubbed them back and forth. “That’s the beauty of this deal. You only have to stay the three months. After that, if things don’t work out, you can come home and keep the down payment. You just don’t get the extra payments. It’s like a dowry.” He took her by the shoulders and stared into her eyes. “It’s twenty-five thousand credits, Caleigh, just for three months of your life.”
“Are you insane? You want me to be a space bride?”
Kevin snorted. “Space bride? What a term. You make it sound like I’m marrying you off to a little green man.”
She growled. “Hello? You want me to leave Earth on a spaceship and travel to another planet to marry an alien man, green or not. No matter how you look at it, it makes me a space bride, and I’m not doing it.”

Excerpt:

The man standing before Bailey’s desk was tall, well over six feet, and had thick auburn hair that he’d combed into strict obedience, with a respectable part down one side. Only the tiny, rebellious wave over his ears gave away the true nature of the strands he’d wrestled into respectability.

He had deep-set, sexy green eyes, a firm, square jaw, and lips that looked as if they were in a permanent pout. Glancing down his aristocratic nose, the man eyed Cliff as if he were a particularly unattractive weed in his favorite flower garden.

Blood closed the distance between them and offered the marshal his hand. “Cliff Blood. Nice to meet you.”

Scott inclined his head, reaching for the offering with an imperceptible grimace.

Despite the cold greeting, the marshal gave Cliff’s hand a squeeze, his vibrant green gaze assessing as he said, “So you’re the bounty hunter?”

Cliff figured the man thought he was addressing Matt, but he went with it. “And you must be the marshal.”

Scott held his gaze for a long moment and then smiled, just a slight uptick in the corners of his sexy mouth. He dipped his head so briefly Cliff thought he might have imagined it. “I’ve heard about you,” Scott finally said.

“Actually, I’m guessing you’ve heard of my brother, Matt. I just recently joined Bailey Bonds.”

The Marshal’s green eyes widened slightly and he smiled again. This time the smile seemed to hold a secret.

Bailey apparently decided it was time to pull their attention back to him. “Marshal Scott is under the mistaken impression that I’m ripping people off for their bond collateral.”

“What are you basing this suspicion on?” Cliff asked him.

“His signature on the powers of attorney for five people who subsequently lost their homes and vehicles, and in one case a 401k.”

Cliff was shocked speechless. He studiously avoided looking at Brent. “You have his signature?”
Scott opened his mouth to respond.

“No. They don’t. They just think they do.” Bailey said.

Cliff slanted Brent a look. “Can you give me more detail?”

Bailey dropped into the chair behind his desk and rubbed his face, which had turned a strange green-gray and had developed scaly undertones.

Cliff widened his eyes as the snake man’s eyes started to change, but Deputy Marshal Scott wasn’t looking at Brent Bailey. He was still staring at Cliff. Unfortunately, Cliff was starting to have trouble breathing under the intense perusal. Was he imagining the heat in that gaze?

“You remember I told you about Jake Franks?” Bailey asked.

Blood frowned. “Your partner?”

“Ex!” Brent glanced at the marshal. “He’s my ex-partner. I haven’t seen or talked to him in months.”
“He got you started in the business, right?”

Marshal Scott finally slid his intense gaze back toward Bailey as Cliff asked the question. Cliff expelled a soft breath in relief.

“Yes, years ago. But I figured out he couldn’t be trusted and I left. Went out on my own.”

“What does he have to do with this?”

Marshal Scott’s intense gaze skimmed back toward Cliff. “He’s running a bail bonds scam. And Mr. Bailey is working with him.”

“What makes you think Brent is working with this guy? You heard him… Franks is crooked.”

“He bilked me out of thousands of dollars in skip fees,” Brent agreed. “I would never work with him again.”

Marshal Scott held Cliff’s gaze as he responded. “I can’t imagine your motivations, Mr. Bailey. All I know is that I have your signature on the powers of attorney for these people.” He finally looked at Brent. “Five families destroyed, Mr. Bailey. Five. All they were trying to do was help loved ones, and you and Franks took advantage of them, robbing them blind. It’s reprehensible…” Scott’s glare slid to Cliff as if he found the employee of the reprehensible one reprehensible too. “I have a handwriting expert examining the signature as we speak, Mr. Bailey. When I get the results back, coupled with the positive identification I expect to get from the victims, I’m sure I’ll be taking you into custody. In the meantime, don’t leave town.” He inclined his head toward Cliff, “Mr. Blood. I’ll be seeing you.”

Cliff wasn’t sure if it was meant as a threat or the promise of a date. He and Brent watched the tall, sexy marshal stroll out of the office and close the outer door quietly behind him. Then Cliff turned to his boss. “Tell me you had nothing to do with this scam.”

Brent’s eyes had lightened even further, becoming almost colorless, with a narrow black slit in the center. His skin was raised in scale-shaped bumps, and his nostrils had tightened to slits. Cliff fought a grimace of distaste. He hadn’t seen his boss’s snake form since the night they’d met.

He hadn’t enjoyed it then, either.

“I’m telling you the truth, Blood. I’d rather eat my rat cooked in Szechuan sauce, with a ssssside of parsley, than work with that asshole again. Snake’s honor. Besides, I don’t need this shit right now. The Elitper Council just informed me that I’ve been withdrawn.”

“Withdrawn? You mean you have to go back to Elitper?”

“I’m not going. I don’t care what they sssssay.”

“But why?”

“We’re only allotted ten years. There are a lot of Elitperions who want to come to Earth. It’sssss nicer here. We don’t want to overwhelm the ecosystem ssssso we come a few thousand at a time in ten year shifts, chosen by lottery.”

Cliff sighed. “How much time do you have?”

“I passsssed the deadline last week. They’ve sssssent an enforcer to get me. I’m on borrowed time.”

Cliff sighed. “Okay, one battle at a time. We’ll deal with that as soon as we get this problem taken care of. How did this thing with Franks happen?”

“Easy. Franksssss came to me a few weeks ago…”

Cliff lifted a hand to stop him. “Wait a minute. I thought you said you hadn’t seen him in months.”
Bailey shrugged narrow shoulders, his long body shifting in an unmistakable slithering movement. “I lied.”

Frowning, Cliff shook his head. “I’ll need full honesty from you if I’m going to be able to help.”
If Brent had had any eyebrows left on his snaky face they would have lifted. “That’sssss what I’m giving you, Blood.”

Expelling a breath, Cliff sat down in the chair across from his boss. “Go on.”

“He sssssaid he’d figured out a way to make a lot of money and asssssked me if I wanted in. Naturally I didn’t trust him ssssso I said no. He tried to talk me into it but I resisted. When he finally left I was relieved. Turns out I shouldn’t have been. He apparently decided he didn’t need me… he only needed my sssssignature.”

“And he had that already, didn’t he? From your partnership agreement?”
The snake sitting in the office chair nodded his huge head. “Yesssss.”

“And you want me to do what, exactly?”

Bailey’s snake form slithered sideways and disappeared beneath the desk. The office chair slammed backward just before Cliff heard the meaty sound of the snake’s body hitting the floor. Cliff barely resisted the urge to lift his feet and shriek like a girl as Bailey slithered across the dusty carpet toward him, his heavy body making shush, shush sounds againstthe rough fibers. Bailey slithered in his direction, nearly toppling a small, metal trash can as he slid past, surprisingly quiet given his size.
Brent Bailey had never been respectable as a human, but he made a decidedly respectable snake. Twenty-five feet long from his snout to the tip of his tail, Bailey’s enormous body was three feet around at the widest part and Cliff guessed he weighed three hundred pounds.

The snake had a tan body with black stripes over its back, and light brown eyes that were even more eerie because they blended into the rest of him. A slash of black, strangely pitchfork shaped, rose up from his flat nostrils, between his eyes.

Bailey curled himself around Cliff’s chair and stopped, his big body quivering. The wood of the chair started to creak and Cliff flew out of it, leaping onto his feet just as the frail wood shattered.

Bailey tended to compress things when he was nervous.

Dropping to his ass on the edge of the desk, Cliff glared down at his boss.

“Sssssorry. Inssssstinct.”

“Just tell me what you need from me and I’ll be on my way. I’m sure you have tiny Japanese people to terrorize and defenseless rodents to swallow whole.”

Did Cliff imagine that gleam in the scary, light brown eyes?

“Yesssss.”

Cliff glared down at the snake and the snake glared up at him. “And?”

“Addresssss. On desssssk.”

Cliff scanned the surface of his boss’s messy desk and found a slip of paper with Jake Franks’ name on it and an address.

“Find him.” Bailey said.

Cliff jumped down from the desk and strolled toward the door. “Yesssss,” he told his boss with a smile.

“Assssshole.”

~Excerpt~

When one goes from sharing a bed with someone to sleeping alone, it feels lonely. When one goes from sharing with four hot men to none, no amount of pillows or sex toys can replace them.

As Liz walked into the lab where she’d worked for years, she felt lost. She’d met the men of her dreams here and had lost them thanks to her employer. Unfortunately, her options had been limited when her four aliens were taken to another location by the most secret part of the government.

Rumor was they were back now. Her lab partner, Meg, was a biologist who’d helped her care for the men. She’d sent Liz a few texts, and Liz knew Meg couldn’t tell her everything. Meg was a good friend, and she wouldn’t lie. Until Liz saw them for herself, however, she couldn’t let herself believe it. She needed to hold them or it would seem as if it was all just a dream.

A cold containment pod stood there in the lab, and Liz paused. The door was slightly open, and it sent a shiver down her back. Had something gone wrong?

She dropped her bag and sprinted to the pod, pushing open the door and expecting the worst—an empty cell.

Liz gasped in relief. Her four guys were there.

Regon ran up, and she hugged him tightly. He was the leader of the four men. His strong arms held her as her knees gave out. She buried her face in his neck. His smell was what convinced her. Their skin had a sweetness to it that wasn’t human at all. The aliens could change their appearance, but her guys played it safe. Brown hair and brown eyes. The variations in height and other details could be faked, but she knew her men. The way they touched her was possessive and intimate. Deep down they were amazingly good and patient considering what they’d been through. While many on Earth found the alien mating habits odds, Liz fell right into their arms. How could she not?

“Liz, we missed you.” Regon kissed her cheek.

Sed brushed her hair to the side and pressed a kiss to the back of her neck. Her tension started to melt away. They were real and here. She kissed Regon’s mouth hungrily then turned to give Sed the same treatment.

“You’re okay?” she asked.

“We’re fine now.” Regon stepped back and stared at her.

A small ball of fur darted out the door, then Regon closed the door for privacy. Jal and Moder, her two favorite to watch when they were intimate together, walked up shoulder-to-shoulder and smiled. She hugged them both and let them squeeze her tightly between them.

“Are you okay?” Moder asked.

Liz stepped back and nodded. “I’m fine. You’re not locked up? You’re not guarded? What’s going on?”

Regon tugged her coat off her shoulders. “Meg yanked a few strings on our behalf. They won’t give us regular quarters, and the lab is locked. We can’t leave without security.”

“Pulled strings. But that’s Meg. She’s such a good friend. I wish I’d been here when they brought you back. Why are you here? What’s going on?” Liz sat on the edge of one of four cots pushed together to make one big bed.

Jal sat next to her. “Don’t worry about anything. You saved our lives when we were hurt in the crash. Meg did the best she could, but the military wants us here for something.”

“The alien abductions in the last few months have spiked. Abductions by our people, the Keelons. There are more going on in waves, and it’s overwhelming the tracking systems. Your government can’t contain it. They need to find something to help defend humans.” Sed shook his head.

Their human mimicking had improved so much. “Like you guys know anything about the abductions. You’re soldiers. It’s not your fault you crashed. Where did they have you?”

“A few hours away. Colder environment,” Regon replied.

“They think we have information about what the Keelons want. Taking us away from you didn’t make us talk so bringing us back is a new strategy.” Sed shrugged.

“Really? Seems dangerous to me. I’d do anything to be with you guys.” Liz leaned on Jal’s strong shoulder. They were all gorgeous figures of men, and her pulse pounded to fully reacquaint her body with theirs.

“We wouldn’t tell them anything until they brought us back to you.” Jal nodded.

She slid her hands over his chest that was covered by a gray T-shirt. He was the practical one who’d never lie to her. “I know how fast you guys heal. Did they hurt you?”

Big-hearted Moder knelt in front of her. “Nothing could be worse than being taken away from you.”

“You four had each other. But you’re talking to the government now? Are they going to set you free?” Liz wanted good news and time alone with them.

The tense looks the men exchanged told her she wasn’t going to get her dream, at least not yet.

“You’re here now. Everything will be fine.” Regon folded his arms.

Liz trusted them, but the feeling that they were holding back something hit her. Looking at the closed door, she shifted her gaze to meet Regon’s.

“What aren’t you telling me?” she asked.

Sed smiled. “Don’t worry about it. Meg and her security guys made some strides in speaking on our behalf, and we might be able to help and be freed.”

Liz smiled at the hope. Sed was the smartest and most technically advanced of the four, but was he correctly seeing the military men? “Meg and her security guys? I know she’s advocated for you. I’ll do everything I can, but you have to share your knowledge with the military, or they’ll never let you walk free.”

“As long as the Keelons are visiting Earth with less than peaceful intentions, we’ll never be free or safe. No matter what any of us do,” Regon said.

“What do the Keelons want? Worst case, what will they do?” Liz didn’t know how to fix the situation. She was a doctor who’d treated unexplained injuries with experimental methods. She wasn’t afraid, but she wasn’t a fighter.

Jal plucked at the buttons on her blouse. “Don’t focus on that, Liz. We have no idea what’s happened since we crashed. Their circumstances could’ve changed. Worrying won’t help.”

“You’re keeping things from me.” She stood and walked away. As much as she loved them, she knew they weren’t human. The government suspected them of being sent to spy on Earth. The possibility that the crash had been staged had been eventually ruled out. The damage and the injuries were too severe. If it had been a set up, it had gone very wrong.

Liz cared for them. She’d seen their pain and fear of the unknown over a year ago. They weren’t spies; they were victims. She believed they’d taken the ship to escape, but the military had never truly bought it. Proving loyalty wasn’t as easy as a blood test.

Regon stepped up behind her. “Worst case? The Keelons could take over Earth. Their technological superiority is unquestionable. They could make us all slaves, but controlling a planet so far away from their home would be more work than benefit. Especially when Earth isn’t a big threat. Please stop worrying. We’ll cooperate, as long as the government doesn’t separate us again.”

Liz turned and looked at the men she loved. Passion and intimacy were one thing, but they hadn’t had enough time together to build trust so deep it was unshakeable even if she wanted to have blind faith in them. “How can we fight the Keelons? I know we’ve been trying, but we need to be able to defend ourselves.”

Sed chuckled. “Don’t worry. Your friend, Meg, had a breakthrough. Hopefully, we helped her a little. There’s a lot for you to catch up on.”

“Really?” Liz smiled. “I knew Meg would figure it out. She’s got the kind of genius that can be good or bad.”

“You’re all good.” Moder slid up behind her and wrapped his arms around her body.

“I wish.” Liz let Moder’s lips on her neck slow her thoughts. She wanted to be good. To be strong enough to stand up for her men and set them free. Of course, if Meg had succeeded in creating a biological weapon, it could be used on Liz’s men as well as any invading Keelons.

Liz was stuck on the nightmare for the moment then stopped thinking about it. Instead, she gave into what all of them needed. She pulled Regon in for a kiss and held him tight.

~Excerpt~

Life inside a self-sufficient military base and research center located in the middle of the desert sounded dangerous and impressive, but to Charlie Smith it was generally dull. People called the facility Dreamland, and most of the stories about it were dreams. Of course, the reality could be even scarier some days.

Day in and day out, routine was the key. Surprises weren’t allowed, but the scientists monitored for possibilities incessantly. Sensors and a no-fly zone kept things predictable. The staff’s work was important, and Charlie preferred this life to the alternative he’d escaped as a child.

Decked out in his usual security outfit of jeans, black shirt and belt full of weapons, he strolled into the biotech lab run by his dream girl. Meg Lyle leaned over a microscope on a lab table—not an unusual posture for her. Her tight rear end stuck out as she shifted from foot to foot.

“Hey, Meg. Adorable as always.”

She grunted in reply and held up her index finger. The woman loved her work, and not much got in the way. Her cat and food were the only things for which Charlie had ever seen her pause. The alien-looking cat had no hair and was a purebred diva Meg called ET. Today, the cat yawned on a nearby metal table.

Charlie checked out Meg even further while she zoomed in on her slides. Meg was a creature of habit. Her hair was pulled back in a long ponytail that coiled to the small of her back, her glasses made her look like the geeky genius she was, and today, she wore a pink and blue floral-print dress that hit her knees and peeked from beneath her crisp, white lab coat. It made her look taller than she was though her shoes were flats that were broken in and kept her from slipping on the slick floors.

The dream of having Meg was shared by Charlie and his unit.

Sure, there weren’t a ton of single women working in this top-secret military base, but it wasn’t just her gender and unique looks that made them long for her. Meg’s quirks ran deep, and she might just be able to handle three men. She was a civilian, for one, and acted like it.

The trio had plans, but with their Marine training, they could wait days without moving a muscle or years without making a move. Timing was everything. Meg clearly wouldn’t figure out their interest until they were ready. Ménage wasn’t traditional, so Charlie could hardly blame her, but a unique woman like Meg was the type who could handle them once they broke the ice.

Charlie had grown tired of waiting and wanted to pounce now. The Christmas break might provide the chance the group had been waiting for. Meg was not on the list of people to fly to Vegas today. If she was staying, their boring security detail had new potential for fun.

With the snap of a control, Meg turned off the machine and smiled at Charlie. “Sorry, what’s up?”

“You’re staying in for the holiday?” he asked.

She nodded. “I’ve got this project, and the big boss doesn’t want it put aside. Besides, what am I missing? My perfect sister’s elegant holiday dinner is just an opportunity for my entire family to rub in that I’m still single. I can’t even brag about my work. Everything is top secret.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll be here. It can be fun when it’s quiet.” He leaned in. “What are you working on?”

“Abductions are up again.” She shook her head. “I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’ve been working on a biological countermeasure. The higher ups want me to refine it. I have no idea how I’m going to test it.”

“Since all the aliens were moved to other locations, maybe the higher ups can do something remotely,” Charlie suggested.

Her nose scrunched, and her glasses lifted. “No, this would completely incapacitate them and cause extreme pain. I can’t do that to some refugee alien. Luckily for humans, it’s totally harmless.”

Charlie watched her close a tube of pale green powder and blow the excess off her table. The government had control of all the refugee aliens. Some had simply crashed to earth while others left the home planet of the Keelons because they weren’t happy with the warrior life. The Keelons weren’t expected to colonize earth, but they had abducted enough humans to be considered a threat. Charlie hoped the general human population never became aware of aliens amongst them. Panic on a massive scale would be dangerous.

He stepped away and tried to make it casual. Petting ET, he wondered what Meg would think if she knew the truth about the trio out to seduce her. Things weren’t so simple here.

After washing her hands, Meg walked over and leaned on the table. “ET likes you. She’s purring.”

“I’m sure there’s another way for you to test your project. A genius like you will figure it out. The idea that you design weapons does seem weird.” Charlie loved her brain and openness, but she never seemed to look up from her work.

“That’s just part of my job. Anything biological is my area.” She rubbed the cat’s ears. “So you and your pals got holiday duty? Bet your girlfriends are pissed.”

Charlie grinned. Meg didn’t flirt much, but every once in a while, he saw a glimmer of her personal side. Her tall form and subtle curves teased men, and she seemed clueless about it. Some guys thought she was frigid or a geek.

“No girlfriends. We don’t have much of a life outside of work. Career military makes it hard. Leaving someone outside Dreamland for months at a time seems cruel. We were overseas for years, too. It’s not right.”

“Please, plenty of men do that. Too bad, there aren’t tons of single women here. Statistically speaking, I should have plenty of male attention, but there are a lot of variables to analyze.” She laughed, but Charlie sensed it was only half a joke.

“Come on, you don’t have a boyfriend amongst your lab guys?” Charlie wanted to make sure.

She blushed and pushed her glasses up her nose. “No! They work for me. That’d just be wrong! It’s hard enough to be a woman around here. I’m not going to invite trouble by sexually harassing my staff. The big guys scrutinize everything. They’re reluctant enough to bring in women.”

He leaned in close to her. “You really think they’d feel harassed? They’d be fighting to get your attention. I bet they all think you’d be offended because you are the boss. The rest of the guys, no doubt, believe you’d be taken by some hot genius who can stimulate your brain and your body.”

“Stop teasing me. You, Henry and Ike can go and get all the girls you want in Vegas once the holidays are over. Then you’ll have some vacation time.” She picked up her cat and walked to the office conveniently built into her lab area.

Had he stepped on a nerve? Women were a mystery he’d never fully understand, but Meg was the only one he wanted to explore. She was the one woman they needed.

He followed her into the office. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No. I’m glad to have friends to get through the holidays with. But please don’t start any rumors about me. I’m not dating anyone—no one here or outside. My work here is too important for me to have any issues. I don’t want to be reassigned or fired.” Meg opened a closet and pulled out some Christmas decorations. Digging through, she picked out a collar with jingle bells and put it on ET.

“Meg, you’re a genius. Any think tank or university would give you your own lab and a ton of funding.” Charlie had overheard some of the offers. The lab guys were jealous of her opportunities and genius.

“Our work here is far more important that anything I’d do out there. My staff is good, but none of them can think the way I do. People’s lives and safety are most important. Commander Hastings thinks I’m a flake, but no one can do what I do here.”

Charlie chuckled. “He does not. You’re quirky. That’s all. Most people here are military or former military. You tend not to follow orders all the time. In Dreamland, they need people who can think outside this galaxy, not just outside the box.”

“They removed all the aliens, so who knows where I’ll end up. My role is supportive and civilian. Following orders isn’t my strength.” She smiled and set out a little Christmas tree on her desk.

“I like a rebel.” Charlie picked up a strand of silver garland and wrapped it around her neck.

Meg rolled her eyes. “I don’t think I’m really a rebel. I was a good student, never broke a law that I know of and lead a very boring personal life. Rebel, no.”

“I don’t buy the sweet innocent act.” He wanted to deepen the conversation, but without the other guys, it wasn’t right. They all needed to be in on the move and to agree it was right.

“I’m not that sweet. Mess with my experiment or my friends and I’ll stick your face in liquid nitrogen. Consider yourself warned.” Meg winked.

“No problem. I’ll steer clear. You have fun with your dust. But if you get bored, you can always join us for meals and movies. We’ll keep you busy and full of holiday cheer.” Charlie left before he said too much.
