Ray's family is forcing him to attend his sister's wedding in Wyoming. He’s convinced she’s making a mistake in setting up house with two men who aren’t even human. The whole idea of people shifting into animals gives him nightmares.

In one last effort to claim her mate, Rennia takes Kati’s advice and lets Ray think she’s human when they meet. For a while she’s in paradise. They’re beginning to fall in love when an old enemy strikes out at the Wind River Pack.

He slipped his hand beneath her blouse and encountered her lacy bra.

For a moment, he traced the openwork design with a finger. “I can almost imagine what your body looks like just from tracing all this lace. But I’d much rather see it firsthand.” With a rough curse, he stripped her out of the shirt and bra before he lifted her. With his mouth hard on hers, he carried her to the small bedroom and laid her on the bed. She drew him down on top of her so that her bare breasts merged with his hard chest. She drank in the smell of his body with pleasure. The feel of his firm skin so intimately kindled a raging arousal in her.

Ray moved his hand down her throat and began stroking the side of her breast. “Take off the rest of it, please.”

Rennia’s fingers trembled as she pushed her jeans down her legs and kicked them across the room. Ray licked his lips as his gaze dropped to her taut breasts. He palmed one of the soft mounds and began to pull gently at her nipple. His work-roughened fingers created a rasping sensation against the firm bud, making it stand up taut and straight. She let out her breath with a moan when Ray cupped her breasts, using his thumbs to rub back and forth across her nipples.

He flexed his fingers against her skin. “You’re so soft…so damned soft.” Fondling her breast, controlling her mouth, he pressed her firmly into the mattress. Her heart slammed against the walls of her chest. Ray worked his way back down her neck and across her collarbone before moving to the aching tips of her swollen breasts. His mouth opened, and he drew the hard tip into it with a faint, soft suction that brought a sharp cry from her dry lips. He sucked it with hard, firm pulls that had her moving her legs to admit him to an intimacy that made her head swim.

Moisture pooled between her legs, and she could feel it begin to slick her thighs. Rennia wasn’t a virgin, but she’d only had one lover in college, and he’d never made her feel anything close to what she was feeling now. She held her breath as rough fingers stroked the hot flesh between her thighs. Her head went back, her eyes closed, as she shivered, biting her lip to keep from weeping, the pleasure was so overwhelming.

“Ray,” she called out, as her nails bit into his broad shoulders.

He pulled her even closer, straining against the thick nylon barrier that was all that separated them. Her pussy clenched when he hooked his fingers beneath the elastic waist and tore them from her body. “I don’t want anything separating us, Rennia. I need to be closer.” His long fingers flexed into the soft skin of her buttocks, stroking and lightly pinching. She felt a husky groan slip from her mouth, as he grew more insistent. Ray moved his fingers gently around the outside lips of her labia, not touching her clit at all. She gasped and thrust herself against his fingers, beginning to ride his hand.

“Your pussy feels like heaven. You’re sopping wet.” He thrust his fingers inside her faster as he ground his palm against her clit. She could still feel one of his hands warm and forceful against her buttocks. Taking a deep breath, she threaded her fingers in his hair and directed his mouth to her neglected breast. Her breath came whooshing out when he used his teeth, abrading the soft flesh. A few feverish minutes later he moved between her long legs and his mouth pushed hard against her lips as his hips eased down against hers. His leg became insistent between her thighs, coaxing them to move apart, to admit the slow, exquisite imprint of his body as he settled his shoulders between her legs. She groaned harshly when he licked her from her anus to her clit. “You taste so damn good.”

Ray hummed as he rimmed the opening of her vagina with his tongue and without warning he thrust it up inside her passage.

Rennia’s breath caught in her throat as she felt his tongue lap gently between her lips, barely catching her clit. Then, he suckled on the small bud and bit gently. She cried out as she ground her aching slit against his hot tongue.

Pushing up, he moved quickly to tangle his tongue with hers, thrusting gently as he had done into her eager slit. She could taste herself in his kiss. “I want you so badly, Rennia. Please, baby, don’t say no. This one’s gonna be fast, but I promise I’ll make it up to you. I just can’t wait to feel myself buried in your beautiful body.”

When Rennia managed to nod, Ray grabbed one of the condoms he’d laid on her table, moved between her wet thighs and placed the sheathed crown of his erection against her tight pussy. His finger moved to stroke back and forth over her nipple. Smiling, he arched over her prone body, resting his formidable weight in his forearms. With one hard thrust, his big cock was buried fully inside her pussy so deep Rennia felt skewered, so big her pussy felt stretched to its limits.

With a groan, Ray began to move within her. Slowly at first, but gradually quicker as desire and need overtook them, he plunged in and out of her silky sheath. Rennia moaned with each of his fierce thrusts, wrapping her legs around him, urging him on, and meeting his every thrust. Needing more, she pushed her lower body against the hard cradle of his pelvis. Rennia arched her back and screamed.

THE TOUCH OF HER HANDS by Missy Martine

THE TOUCH OF HER HANDS by Missy Martine

The Wind River Pack 3

Aurelia Salazar has a special gift the government wants to know more about. She can heal with just the touch of her hands. For five years they kept her hidden away while they studied her. And then two brave Marines helped her escape and smuggled her out of the country.

When some of the children of the Wind River Pack become ill, Zack remembers the young girl and her unique abilities. He goes to South America to find her and bring her back so she can help. He doesn’t expect to find she’s his mate.

Now, they’re racing against the clock to get her back to the States before it’s too late for the children. But Zack isn’t the only one searching for her. What happens when the scientist that held her prisoner for all those years finds them?

Zack squatted down next to the girl. “What do you want me to do?”

“Unfasten his belt and pull his pants down.”

Zack wrinkled his nose and moved to do as she asked. He noticed she turned her face away and blushed as he pulled the trousers down past the man’s boxer shorts, leaving them bunched around his calves. “Okay, I’m pretty sure the damn thing’s broken, Medina. It looks bad. I need to call a medical transport, man.”

Aurelia turned back around and glanced at the injured leg. “That won’t be necessary.” She moved closer to Medina’s body and pulled off her gloves. Taking a deep breath, she rubbed her hands together as if to warm them, and then placed them on his thigh.

As Zack watched, a slight orange glow formed around her hands, highlighting each finger. With her eyes closed, she breathed in and out steadily. It was like she disappeared into her own little world. Medina groaned and then visibly relaxed. His head sank back onto the ground as he sighed.

After a couple of minutes, Aurelia gasped and pulled her hands away. If anything, she was even paler than before. “How is it?” she asked.

Medina moved his leg up and down and laughed. “It’s all better, girl. Damn, I’ve seen you do that before, but it never fails to amaze me. You fixed it.”

“What’s going on?” Zack asked. Medina sighed and awkwardly got to his feet. He pulled up his pants, fastened them, and then reached to help Aurelia stand. Zack frowned when she swayed slightly. “Is she all right?”

Medina nodded. “The healings always take something out of her, some more than others. This was minor compared to some of the things I’ve seen her do.”

“It’s time for you to tell me the truth. What are you doing out here? I know you came from the building because you left the door open.”

“I had to. I needed a way back in where nobody could see me.”

Zack crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m waiting. What’s going on?”

“He’s helping me escape.”

Zack frowned and looked at the girl. “Escape from what?”

“The government,” whispered Aurelia.

“I couldn’t leave her in there any longer, man. They’ve been holding her here, against her will.”

“Why?” asked Zack.

“Because of my gift.”

“Your gift? I don’t understand.”

“She can heal people with the touch of her hands,” said Medina. “It’s not a scam. You saw it for yourself. They found out what she can do and they wanna know more. Hell, they’re keeping her drugged most of the time. They’ve been running all kinds of medical tests when she’s unconscious. I’m afraid of what they’ll try to do next. They can’t figure where her power comes from.”

Zack knew all about having abilities one had to keep secret. “How did they find you?”

Aurelia’s eyes filled with tears. “I’d been able to heal my brother’s small cuts and bruises since I was about five. When my father accidentally backed over his dog, I healed him right there in the driveway. Up until then, I’d kept it to myself, but my father was a witness this time.” She wiped at her eyes. “At first, he was afraid of me, but then he began to wonder how he could benefit from my gift. He wasn’t discreet, and before he could make any real plans, the government made him an offer. Basically, you could say he sold me. They gave him money and a small piece of land and then took me away to live in their labs.”

“How long ago?” asked Zack.

“Five years. I was nine years old when I last saw my family.”

Medina grabbed Zack’s arm. “Please, you’ve got to let her go. They’re planning to transfer her soon, and I might not be able to go with her. She deserves a chance at life.”

“Where were you taking her tonight?”

“My cousin is waiting about a mile from here, through the woods. He’s gonna get her out of the country and take her someplace they’ll never find her. I was gonna go back inside and make it look like she’d escaped.”

“Was Raulston in on this?” asked Zack.

“No, but I knew I could get by him. He’s been drinking on duty lately.”

Zack turned away and walked a few feet. When he turned back, his gaze settled on Aurelia. His coyote wanted closer, wanted to protect the little girl. Nobody should have to live their life as some kind of specimen. “For this to work, It’s gonna have to look like both of us were taken unaware. I wouldn’t be able to explain how she got past me while I was on patrol. You’ll have to knock me out and then go back inside and do whatever you can to make it look like you were overpowered.”

Medina smiled. “Then you’ll help us?”

Zack sighed and nodded. Aurelia moved quickly and threw her arms around his waist. “Thank you, oh, God, thank you. Bless you, sir. I’ll never forget you.”

Zack cleared his throat and pushed her away. “Go on and get her to your brother. I don’t wanna know where you’re going. I’ll be waiting by the back door. When you get back, we can set the scene.”

Medina holstered his gun. “Thanks, Wind River. I’ll owe you, man.”

“Call me Zack, please.” He motioned toward the woods. “Go on and get moving. You’re wasting time.” He stood and watched as the two of them hurried toward the northern border of town. Just before they disappeared into the trees, the girl turned back and gave a small wave. For some reason, his stomach clenched. For a moment, he fought the impulse to chase after her, and then turned to make his way back to the building he was supposed to be guarding. It was definitely going to be a long, cold night.

Zack moved to the foot of the bed and prowled up Aurelia’s body. He cupped her head and gazed down into her eyes. Then, unable to help himself, he kissed her, devouring her mouth. She lay back as he covered her body with his. Dropping close to her ear, he nibbled on her lobe. “You excite me, mate,” he whispered against her damp skin. Reaching up, he cupped her cheek and brushed his thumb tenderly back and forth across her skin.

Biting back a groan, his hands ran up her torso to the outsides of her breasts. Bending, he covered the tip of her breast with his mouth, teasing the sensitive bud of tight flesh. He took the engorged nipple into his mouth and sucked gently, reveling in the fact it was his touch that aroused her so much he could scent her desire.

Needing more, his hands roamed down her stomach and over the swells of her hips and buttocks, and then dropped to search between her legs. Pleasure shot into his balls as she gasped, her entire body shivering in response, her fingernails digging into his scalp. Moving restlessly beneath him, she caressed his arm, his shoulders, his back, every part of him she could reach. Groaning, she dragged her nails down his back as he left a wet trail on her skin with his lips and tongue. He worked his way down her body as she squirmed in pleasure. Then, she froze when his fingers brushed the inside of her thighs.

Looking down, he gazed at her open pussy, moist and gleaming. Bending, he brushed his knuckles against her silky skin and then flicked his tongue along her inner thigh. She moved restlessly as he licked her leg slowly from her ankle to the inside of her knee, and then trembled when his mouth inched a little farther up her thigh.

Zack could smell the moisture pooling between her legs as he studied the curly patch of damp hair covering the entrance to her sex. He rubbed circles on her belly before his fingers explored her moist heat. Her nails bit into his shoulders as she clung to him, her head thrown back, her lips parted.

Coating his fingers in her slick excitement, Zack found her clit and rubbed it before he pushed a finger inside her core, followed quickly by a second one. Gently he pumped them in and out of her pussy as her inner walls clamped down around his fingers. She moaned when he took her clit between his thumb and forefinger and rubbed the slick flesh slowly in tiny circles. He plucked and teased the sensitive flesh, and then slipped his thick index finger inside of her, moving it slowly in and out before he traced her cleft again.

Leaning close, he thrust his tongue inside her to explore her intimately and felt her pussy flood with cream. “You taste even better than you smell.” Zack could hear Aurelia muttering but couldn’t understand what she said. A harsh sound escaped her lips as she closed her eyes and opened her legs a little more. Accepting her invitation, he extended his tongue and lapped slowly, feasting on her juices, savoring her musky scent and salty taste. “Come over my tongue, mate. Give me what I need,” he whispered.

Zack swirled his tongue through her folds and right up into her channel as she cried out. His fingers moved into her hot sheath at the same time he clamped down on her clit. Aurelia’s body stiffened and shuddered under his hands as she exploded. Arching upward, she let out a cry as she came, her inner walls clutching at his fingers. A fresh surge of cream erupted from her pussy, coating his hand.

Zack moved up her body quickly and thrust his tongue between her lips. Eager and demanding, he moved it deep into her mouth. He panted as he pulled back to look into her eyes. “I need my cock in you, now.” When Aurelia nodded, he grasped his sex and pushed the tip slowly inside of her, watching as her flesh parted for him. Guiding the head, he pushed it just inside while she arched toward him eagerly, aiding his descent.

His shaft slid into her with ease, her channel wet and welcoming as he stretched her walls. She caught his hips, urging him to move faster, delve deeper. Zack released a harsh breath and drove deeply, grinding his hips against her, and slid all the way in with a powerful thrust. Aurelia locked her ankles behind his back and lifted her arms, looping them around his shoulders and spearing her fingers through his hair. She clutched his shaft with her inner muscles.

Catching her buttocks in his hands, Zack arched upward even as he bore down on her. He angled his strokes higher up on her body so his shaft rubbed her clit and then flexed his hips to sink a little deeper inside. Aurelia dug her fingernails into the tops of his shoulders and squeezed his shaft with her strong inner muscles. He cupped her bottom in his hands and lifted her hips as he pumped between her thighs.

“Faster, Zack, faster.”

Alpha Remus cleared his throat and waited for the members of his pack to settle down. He was tired and just wanted to go home and cuddle with his mate. “Everyone, settle down. We’ve got some more business to discuss.”

“What’s going on, Remus?” asked Latan. “This is sort of a strange group you’ve put together.” Latan was Remus’s youngest brother and always considered the serious one of the family.

“Be patient, brother. I’ll explain everything in a minute.” Remus waited for the pack’s visitor to join him at the front of the room. At six and a half feet tall, he was almost as intimidating in his human form as he was as a bear. “For those of you who missed the pack meeting, this is Zander Temple. He’s the head enforcer for the National Council.” Remus stepped toward his mate. “You’ve met my mate, Maddie. These are my brothers, Latan and Ethan and their mate Kitania. Over there is their son, Synia, and another member of my pack, Kinnith. And last, this is Koril, the head of security for the pack.”

Latan stood up. “You’re here investigating the disappearance of the pack children in the area, aren’t you?”

“Sit down, Latan,” Remus ordered. Alpha Cardston, from a Canadian pack, had reported four pups disappearing without a trace from their pack lands. It had brought the total missing pups in Canada to twenty-one—eleven females and ten males. “That was his main purpose here, but now he wants to ask a favor of us.”

“Yes, Alpha Remus is correct. I’m on a fact-finding mission in regards to the disappearances, but what I want to talk to you about now is more personal in nature.”

Remus looked around the room. “He’s already explained what he needs and I’ve decided to grant his request, so listen up as he explains.”

Zander relaxed, resting one hand on his hip. “My boss is the head of the Council, Robert Mavers. He asked me to find someone to travel to Tennessee to provide some protection and some detective work for a close friend of his.”

“Who’s the friend?” asked Koril.

“Lieutenant Franklin Matthews of the New York City police department.”

Koril’s eyebrows rose. “Human?”

Zander nodded. “Lieutenant Matthews has a daughter. For the past year and a half she’s been living in White Bluff. Before that, she was an undercover officer in New York working in narcotics. Approximately two years ago her cover was blown, and in the resulting firestorm, she killed the eldest son of the head of the local cartel and took a bullet to her upper thigh. She had a hard six-month recovery and promptly left New York for the smaller town.”

Synia sighed. “As fascinating as all this is, what does it have to do with Wind River?”

Remus growled. “Maybe if you’d keep your mouth shut, Zander could continue.”

Synia swallowed hard and bared his throat. “My apologies, Alpha.”

Remus narrowed his eyes and then motioned for Zander to continue.

“Apparently she lost her nerve and didn’t want to continue with the stress of working in New York, and she wanted a quiet place to recuperate. Her father says she bought a small cabin back in the woods and has pretty much secluded herself.”

“Okay,” Koril said. “I’m assuming she’s the one that needs protection, but protection from what?”

“Miss Matthews has a brother, Detective Raymond Matthews, also with the New York police department. He recently got word from an informant that the Lawrence family is now ready for a little payback, and apparently they’ve discovered the young lady’s location.”

Maddie stood and moved close to Remus. “Forgive my ignorance, but I’m having a little trouble following all this. Who are the Lawrences?”

“Maurice Lawrence is the head of the largest drug cartel in New York. They’ve been trying to put him away for a very long time. He had two sons, and Katherine Matthews’ assignment was to get close to the oldest boy and look for evidence to bring the father down. It’s my understanding she got romantically involved with Eduardo Lawrence and then had to kill him when he discovered who she was. According to Raymond’s snitch, the old man is sending his younger son, Antonio, to take revenge for his brother’s death.”

Remus moved to stand next to Zander. “That all sounds pretty straight forward. You look for the son, take him out, and everybody’s safe and happy. Where does the detective work come in?”

“The snitch said the old man wants the girl to pay, and he thinks killing her outright is too fast and not payment enough for taking out his oldest son. He’s got a mole somewhere down in Tennessee that’s supposed to play with her for a while. He’s going to terrorize her and make her wish she’d never left New York. Then, when they don’t think she can take anymore, the younger son gets the honor of being the one that ends her life.” Zander grimaced. “He’s been told to do it in a way that will make her a good example to anyone else considering going against their family.”

“Why doesn’t your boss send a couple of the Council’s enforcers down to take care of this?” asked Koril.

Zander shrugged. “We’re stretched too thin. We’ve got a few teams investigating the pups’ disappearance. We’ve assigned two guards at each of the Council’s homes for children, and we’re putting forth a concentrated effort to find Kaugh’s hidden Canadian lab.” Dr. Vincent Kaugh was a brilliant scientist. Unfortunately, he was also certifiable. He’d been connected to Dr. Richard Constantine, another brilliant scientist, who kept the Alpha’s mate confined for years in an attempt to study their race. Kaugh had continued Constantine’s work after the pack killed him. His unsanctioned research revolved around combining human and shifter DNA. He was apprehended in time to keep him from having Kitania killed.”

Koril snorted. “Why the hell are you looking for that old goat’s lab? Is he even still alive?”

Groaning, Laynee slowly opened her eyes and shivered. “Father?” She felt groggy, her head almost spinning. Her tongue felt thick, and a bad taste coated her mouth. She could smell an earthy, pine scent mixed with the odor of damp, rotting wood. The air was crisp and bitingly cold. She reached out her hand and trailed her fingers over the rough bark of a tree. A cold wind ruffled through her hair.

“Ugh,” she groaned when she felt the moisture seeping into her jeans. She could feel the prickle of briars against her palms as she pushed to a sitting position, the spongy ground making her draw back in horror. Why can’t I think clearly? Everything seems so fuzzy. “Where the hell am I, Father?” she screamed.

She froze and tried to calm her breathing, listening carefully for the sound of voices. The only sound was the branches creaking and the groaning of the trees in the wind. She wrapped her arms around her waist and tried to stop from shaking. “What am I gonna do now?”

Trying to control her fear, she struggled to her feet and reached out with her hand to steady herself against a tree. Dizziness nearly overwhelmed her as she dropped to her knees. She turned her face to the wind and strained to hear a familiar sound. After a minute, she tried to stand and froze. The rhythmic sound of footsteps beating against the path caused her breath to catch. “Who’s there?” she whispered.

“I can hear something panting.” Using her legs, she pushed back toward the tree when something plowed through the brush. When she heard an excited yip, she turned to the direction it came from and smiled. “Doggy, here boy.” Barely able to keep her eyes open, she held out her hand. Moments later, something cold and wet pressed against her palm.

She took a shaky breath and laughed. “You’re a big fellow, aren’t you?” Laynee continued to pet him, laughing when he licked her cheek and neck, partially leaning on his firm back. The heat from his body drew her. She scooted closer and hugged him tight.

“You’re so warm, boy. Do you think I could warm myself for just a minute?” It was almost like he understood, cuddling closer, giving her the warmth from his body. “Fellow, we need to get out of here. You’ve got to have a master somewhere.” Her hands rubbed over his neck. “You don’t have a damn collar. Are you a stray?” She sighed when he licked her cheek. “Do you think you could lead us out of here, big guy? I can’t make it on my own. You’ll have to let me lean on you. I’m not feeling too well.”

* * * *

Eric sniffed Laynee’s neck, whined, and then growled softly. She’s my mate! There was something off about her scent, but there was no doubt, this woman was his mate. He spotted a drink can on the ground and leaned down to sniff it, growling when he caught the unnatural scent. She was drugged, just like the man said. When she stiffened, he stopped growling and licked her cheek, whining when he felt her relax against him.

Turning, he stared at her face and froze. Her blank gaze was directed his way, but it was obvious she didn’t see him. My beautiful mate is blind! What kind of a man would leave his blind daughter to fend for herself?

Another unusual scent caught Eric’s attention. He raised his nose and breathed in deeply. With a low growl, he pulled away from Laynee and moved to the other side of the tree.

“Wait,” Laynee cried, and tried to grab for him, nearly falling flat on her face.

He hurried back so she could touch him, but not before he saw the raw meat lying on the ground. It’s a miracle some animal didn’t find her before I did. I’ve got to get her moving toward the highway so David can find us. They were too far from the road for David to pick up her scent unless he shifted. I’d hate to see how she’d react to hearing a bear lumbering through the woods.

Eric nudged her thigh and watched in horror as she tumbled over onto her side. Damn, I didn’t mean to knock you down.

Laynee groaned and pulled herself up. “I’m sorry, boy. I can’t seem to wake up. I’m so dizzy.”

Eric growled softly. I know why you’re dizzy. All those drugs are still in your system. It’s gonna be hard getting you back to the car if I don’t shift.

Determined, he nudged her thigh again and gripped her shirt between his teeth and pulled. She got the message and pulled herself up.

“Okay, boy. I’m coming. Keep your shirt on.” She got shakily to her feet, leaned heavily against Eric, and threaded her fingers in his ruff, holding on tight. Eric leaned down, closed his jaw around the soda can, and then prodded her forward, moving her around rocks and limbs as carefully as he could. Slowly they made their way toward the highway.

~Excerpt~

Officer Tony Grandy slammed on the brakes of his Dodge Durango, throwing up gravel and dirt behind him. He wasn’t surprised to see the standard white pickup truck of the park rangers parked outside the crumbling old saloon in Hamilton. He knew Ranger Zachary Carlson would be somewhere near. It was two years ago today that two young women had vanished from the ghost town without a trace. Tony had been on duty when the 911 call had come in from one of the women. Miss Katarina Elizabeth Evans had reported her friend, Anna Lorraine Oakland, missing. The two women had been vacationing together when they stopped at the old town to do some research for a book Miss Evans was writing, according to friends. It had taken him twenty minutes to reach the scene after the victim disconnected her call, but by then it was too late.

There had been no sign of either woman. The only evidence they’d been there at all was the abandoned Ford Escape registered to Katarina Evans. That was also the first time he’d met Park Ranger Zach Carlson. He’d arrived on the scene just a scant two minutes behind Tony. The two men had searched all the buildings thoroughly, even hiking up the hill to search the old Silver Bell Mine and Belmont Mill. They’d found footprints that could have been a small woman, but no other clues. The women had just vanished without a trace.

The investigation had hit him hard, and Ranger Carlson even harder. He’d only been on the job about a month when he’d responded to the call. The two men had investigated together, off and on over the first year, learning a lot about the two women, but getting no closer to solving their disappearance. All that time spent together had brought the men together, not exactly friends, but closer in some ways. He’d never admit it to anyone, but he felt a strange pull to be closer to the shy ranger.

Tony threw the truck in park and cut the engine. Grabbing his hat, he unfolded his five-foot-eleven-inch frame out of the vehicle and stretched his arms over his head, rotating his neck back and forth. Slamming the door shut, he moved forward. There wasn’t much left of the old mining town. Two buildings were still standing, but he knew the local residents were petitioning to have the area razed. Nobody really considered it historical, mainly just an eyesore and danger to the children they couldn’t keep from exploring the so-called ghost town. The area had an unremarkable history as far as he was concerned. Its greatest claim to fame being the women’s disappearance. For six months after they disappeared, the news crews, psychics, and ghost chasers went over the area with a fine-tooth comb and didn’t find a thing.

“I had a feeling you’d be out here today.”

Tony turned around and smiled at Zach. “Where else would I be on our anniversary?”

Zach grimaced. “I’m not sure I wanna think of this as our anniversary, man. That’s pretty dismal.” He looked around at the mounds of wood and rock up and down the small dirt road.

“I can’t get this place out of my mind. I feel like it draws me here,” Tony said. “Like it’s waiting to give up its secrets. You just have to be here at the right time to understand everything.”

Zach’s eyes widened. “Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel. I think about those poor women and wonder whatever happened to them.” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I mean, I know they’re probably dead, but it’s like I can’t rest until I know for sure.”

Tony pulled off his hat and smacked it against his leg, a cloud of dust drifting in the air around him. “You wanna get some lunch?”

“Sure, just let me…” Both men whirled around, drawing their guns, when a faint, feminine scream came from the old saloon.

“Tell me you heard that,” asked Tony.

“Oh, yeah, I heard it. It came from inside the building.” Zach motioned toward the saloon with the tip of his service revolver. “There ain’t no back door to this place, and the windows are all boarded up tight. We’ll have to go in from the front to check it out.”

“Should we call for backup?”

Zack frowned. “I’d rather not. I’m not anxious to explain what I’m doing out here if it’s all the same to you. I’d rather wait and see if there’s anything to report before I get anybody’s dander up.”

“Fine by me.” Tony moved closer to the building. “I’d just as soon not be the butt of a thousand ghost jokes. I’ll take point. Cover me best you can.” The two men moved slowly toward the open door of the old saloon. The sun was blistering hot, with hardly any breeze stirring the air. Tony could feel the sweat rolling down his back as he moved up the rickety steps. The foul stench of rotting wood was almost overwhelming as he cautiously peered inside the dark room, sweeping the interior with a quick glance. He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up as he moved farther into the dismal building.

Inside was a heavy mildew smell and definite signs of critter infestation. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Zach move through the door, slowly making his way around the room in the opposite direction. A soft crash, and a muffled voice, had both men turning toward the only door in the room. Tony knew, from their past investigation, the door led to an underground basement. When he reached the opening, he glanced down.

“When I get my hands on Timothy Canders, I’m gonna slap him silly.”

The feminine voice drifted up from the basement. Tony quickly moved back when footsteps sounded on the stairs.

“Is anybody there?” the girl called out. “It that you, Timothy?”

Tony glanced at Zach and then back at the open doorway. “Come up with your hands in clear sight. I’m a police officer.”

“Okay, I’m coming. It’s awfully dark. You wouldn’t happen to have a lamp, would you?”

Tony frowned. “No, but I’ve got a flashlight. I’m gonna shine it down the steps. You come straight up and keep your hands where I can see them.” He pulled the flashlight from his belt and moved closer to the open doorway. He had to choke back a laugh when he heard the girl muttering.

“What? Does he think I’m some kind of dangerous criminal? I can’t believe anybody would be afraid of me.”

Tony nodded toward Zach where he stood against the far wall, his gun pointed toward the basement door, and then moved to shine his light down the steps.

Delsin sniffed the air and came fully awake when the aroma of something tasty settled in his nose. It was his turn to cook, but someone must have taken pity on him and saved him from the arduous chore. He quickly dressed and headed for the kitchen.
He came to a halt just inside the door. Mer was standing in front of the stove, dressed in a pair of shorts and no shirt. He was humming some tune and wiggling his hips in time to the beat. Delsin felt his cock begin to fill, his lion stretching and purring inside him. Swallowing hard, he cleared his throat.
Mer turned around and smiled. “Good morning! Did you sleep well? I figured since you went to the trouble to bring all this food from Earth, I’d give you a hand and cook breakfast for everyone.” He took a step back and bit his lip. “Is that okay?”
Delsin took two steps into the room and smiled. “Absolutely, it’s okay. It smells wonderful.”
“What’s that heavenly smell?” Etu walked through the door, raking his fingers through his hair. Brother, my lion is fighting me. He wants Mer for a mate, and I’m not sure I can control him.
Delsin looked at the heat in Etu’s eyes and groaned inwardly. I know what you’re going through. My own beast is determined to claim the little man no matter what I want. We need to fight it, Etu. We need to find a female shifter that’s willing to come live with our pride so we can increase our numbers. Eventually our lions will understand this.
“That smell is the wonderful aroma of bacon, my friend. There’s nothing like starting the day with several thick slices of pig to go with your scrambled eggs.” Mer chuckled and put another pan on the cooking unit. He vigorously stirred a bowl of runny, yellow liquid.
“Man, that smells good.” Hakan walked in, followed closely by Knoton. “When are we eating?”
“Any minute now. “ Mer poured the contents of the bowl into the hot pan. “Take a seat, and I’ll bring your plates to you.” A few minutes later he was setting plates of eggs and bacon in front of each man. “Go ahead and get started. I’m gonna run and check on the babies, and then I’ll come back and join you.”
Delsin watched him walk down the hall and groaned.
“Goddess, this is fantastic.” Knoton shoveled the food in his mouth.
Hakan narrowed his eyes. “For somebody that’s not interested in taking him as a mate, the two of you are almost drooling watching him. What’s going on?”
Knoton snorted. “If you really don’t want him, would you mind if I take a stab at getting him to like me?”
In the blink of an eye, Delsin had Knoton up against the wall with his hands at his throat. “You will keep your paws off of him. Do you understand?”
Etu leaned in close. “We will end your life in a very painful way if you don’t stay away.”
Knoton grinned. “I can see how the two of you don’t really want or care about the little human.”
Delsin tightened his hands and then froze when a bloodcurdling scream came from the back of the house.

“You want me to do what?” District Attorney Elliot Reynolds raked his fingers through his short brown hair while small drops of sweat trickled down his flushed face.
Zintssar, the oldest brother of the Arridian clan, took a deep, calming breath. He’d been negotiating treaties between his home planet and other worlds for years. But this was personal, and he was quickly losing patience. “We want you to make arrangements for us to take Jenilyn Montgomery with us when we travel home.”
Elliot’s eyes widened, and his hand came up to lightly clasp his throat. “You’re talking about the young woman that was arraigned on embezzlement charges.”
Zintssar nodded. “Yes, the female with long brown hair and green eyes. We want to take her to Kilara.”
The district attorney paced back and forth in the small room. “I don’t understand.”
Zintssar sighed and glanced over at his brothers. Kernztssar, better known as Kernz, looked as if he could happily dismember the disagreeable human, while Xortztssar appeared bored. “We live on Kilara now. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Federation’s program to cultivate habitable planets for food. Our home world, Arridia, was awarded a spot on Kilara. My brothers and I are going to make it our home for the next year or so.”
Elliot frowned and gave a slight shake of his head. “No, I mean I don’t understand why you want Ms. Montgomery.”
“She’s our destined mate.”
Elliot took a couple of shuffling steps back, his mouth dropping open. “She’s your…I mean, how…When did you meet her?”
Zintssar struggled not to laugh at the struggling man. “We haven’t met her yet.”
“Then how do you know she’s your mate?”
“Because her scent draws me like none other ever has before.” The eldest son, and only the eldest, in an Arridian clan could recognize their mate from her scent. The brothers were destined to share the same mate, as their fathers before them. Zintssar took two steps and looked down on the human male. “Will you make the arrangements?”
Elliot’s lips trembled, his hands gripping the back of a chair so hard his knuckles turned white. “I can’t do that, Zintssar. She’s just been arraigned today. She’s got to stand trial for the charges that were brought against her.”
Kernz moved forward to stand next to Zintssar. “How long will that take?”
The district attorney crossed his arms over his chest and raised his chin a fraction of an inch. “It could be anywhere from a month to six months to even get a date for the trial. You know how long it took to bring Edward Davis to trial.”
Zintssar growled softly. He and his brothers were on Earth to testify at Edward’s trial. They had helped their good friends, Andon and Tarik, rescue their mate when Edward kidnapped her and her brother. “We have to wait until some farce of a trial to take our mate home?”
“I’m sorry. I’m not trying to make you angry, but you may never get the chance to take her home. It has to be her decision to accept your claim, and she might be found guilty of the charges brought against her.”
Zintssar shook his head. “No! She’s innocent.”
Elliot pursed his lips, tilting his head to the side. “How do you know that?”
“You wouldn’t understand.” Zintssar shifted his gaze to Kernz and then back to Elliot. “It’s a trait my people have, similar to your telepathy but different. We feel other’s emotions, and there’s a noticeable difference in someone who’s being false. Jenilyn Montgomery is not guilty of the charges against her.”
Sighing, Elliot dropped into a chair. “I’m sorry to say it might not matter, Zintssar. Our people base their opinion on the facts presented in the case. If the facts are compelling enough, the jury will find her guilty.”
Kernz’s nostrils flared, and he moved to stand over the district attorney. “What happens to her if they find her guilty?”
Elliott swallowed hard. “She’ll be sent to a state penitentiary for a set amount of time. The usual sentence is anywhere from ten to twenty years, depending on the circumstances.”
Zintssar felt his canines drop as he suppressed a growl. “Not acceptable.”
Elliot stood and moved toward the door. “You may not have a choice. I’m sorry, but it’s not in my power to just give her to you.”
Zintssar moved forward until he was crowding Elliott against the wall. He felt his lip turn up in a half smile as he watched the nervous tic in the man’s jaw. “Then let me make myself perfectly clear, Mr. Reynolds. We want our mate. Your government has shown great interest in the clean energy sources from our home world, Arridia.” He moved even closer and let his grin widen when his brothers moved in on each side, effectively boxing in the nervous man. “Your world leaders have already begun talks of trade with our father.” He leaned down until his breath stirred the short hairs on Elliot’s head. “I can promise you those talks will stop until we have our mate safely in our home on Kilara.”

A small white paper lying on the floor caught her attention. “Kevin!” When he didn’t answer she dropped the empty containers onto the table and started down the hall. “Kevin, get in here.”
Continued silence told her he wasn’t home. For the past six years, since her mother’s death, she’d had the responsibility of raising her younger brother. Their father had walked out before Kevin was born, and they hadn’t heard from him since. She’d given up her plans for college and settled into a receptionist’s job to support him. Taking a deep breath, she turned back toward the living room and grimaced. She was tired of coming home to chaos. The day Kevin turned eighteen she was going to make some hard decisions.
Caleigh was closing up the garbage bag when she heard the front door open. Grimly, she tied off the bag and hurried to confront her wayward sibling. She found him in the living room where he’d collapsed onto the sofa and switched on the television. Stubbornly, she walked over and turned off the movie he’d begun to watch.
“Hey, I’m watching that.”
“Did you have a party here today?” she asked.
Kevin snorted. “No, I’d hardly call having Benny over a party.”
“You told me you were going on a couple of job interviews today. What happened?”
“We went, and then we got hungry so we came here for some lunch.” He shrugged. “Nobody ever hires you the same day you apply. They always say they’ll call you.”
“I cleaned up quite a little picnic here. Who bought lunch?”
Kevin looked over at the dark television screen. “Benny treated us.”
Caleigh narrowed her eyes. “You’re lying, baby brother.” She pulled the receipt out of her pocket and threw it toward him. “You forgot to get rid of this.” Her fists clenched at her sides as she watched him grab for the small white paper. “How dare you use my credit card without asking?”
“You told me to use it if I needed it. Wasn’t that why you left it in the kitchen drawer?”
“For emergencies only, Kevin. I hardly think feeding your deadbeat friends falls into that category.” She held the credit card up in her hand. “Don’t bother to look for it again because I’m keeping it with me from now on.”
“Fine, take your damn card. I’ll get my own.”
She smirked, shaking her head. “I think you’ll find a job is a prerequisite for getting credit.” Sighing, she moved away as he turned the television back on. Ignoring him, she walked over and picked up the mail. Flipping through the envelopes her heart sank. There were so many bills and so little money. Her salary barely covered the payments and their small apartment.
She pulled one of the envelopes out that caught her eye. “Galactic Nuptials,” she mumbled. “What the hell is this?” Frowning, she checked again to make sure her name was on the front before she ripped it open and scanned the letter inside. Smothering a laugh, she read through it a second time more thoroughly.
“What is it?” Kevin asked, turning down the volume on the television.
Shaking her head, Caleigh grinned at him. “A mistake.” She glanced down at the letter. “Dear Ms. Davis. It’s our pleasure to inform you that your application to Galactic Nuptials has been approved, and a possible mate has been found. All that is necessary to move forward in meeting your life-mate is to schedule an interview and the mandatory medical physical. Please call our office at the number listed below to set up an appointment as soon as possible. We look forward to working with you to place you with your ideal life’s mate. Sincerely, Tarooka Meekers, Galactic Nuptials.” She tossed the letter in the trash pile. “What a screwup!”
“They approved it,” Kevin cried. He jumped off the couch and rushed to grab up the letter.
Caleigh narrowed her eyes. “What do you know about this?”
“We’re gonna be rich, sister dear.” He threw the letter down and grabbed Caleigh up in a bear hug, swinging her around.
“Put me down, right now.” Caleigh struggled to get free. “What have you done, Kevin?”
“Brought us in a load of money, for starters.” He picked up the envelope the letter came in. “Did you see this?” He pulled out a small card she’d overlooked. “They even sent a picture of your ideal mate.”
Caleigh ignored the picture in his hand. “What do you mean you’ve brought us in a load of money?” She could feel a knot forming in her stomach and knew that she wouldn’t like whatever he had to say.
“I mean a load of money. This place offers cash incentives for women to travel to other planets and marry guys.” He gave her a big grin. “They give a down payment and then you get the balance of the money after you spend three months with the guy.”
“I’m supposed to marry some alien so you can get a bunch of money?” she asked, incredulous.
He slapped his hands together and rubbed them back and forth. “That’s the beauty of this deal. You only have to stay the three months. After that, if things don’t work out, you can come home and keep the down payment. You just don’t get the extra payments. It’s like a dowry.” He took her by the shoulders and stared into her eyes. “It’s twenty-five thousand credits, Caleigh, just for three months of your life.”
“Are you insane? You want me to be a space bride?”
Kevin snorted. “Space bride? What a term. You make it sound like I’m marrying you off to a little green man.”
She growled. “Hello? You want me to leave Earth on a spaceship and travel to another planet to marry an alien man, green or not. No matter how you look at it, it makes me a space bride, and I’m not doing it.”

“Oh, my God, it is you. Kat!”
Before she could respond, a woman rushed across the room and pulled her into a hard embrace. She pressed her arms against the woman’s chest, her mouth growing dry, and the sound of her heartbeat roaring in her ears. “Stop. What are you doing?”
“What’s the matter? Don’t you recognize me?”
Kat looked closer, and her hand flew to her own chest. A heavy feeling settled in her stomach, her hands suddenly shaking uncontrollably. “Anna? What the hell have you done to yourself?”
Anna’s hair was longer than she’d ever seen it, hanging in a slender braid over one shoulder. Although still red, it had some silver streaks mixed throughout the stands. There were lines in her face Kat didn’t remember and a glow of happiness she’d never seen before.
“What are you wearing?” Anna had on some kind of long robe that looked like it came from the antique shop she and Anna liked to browse through on rainy weekends.
“Oh, Kat, it’s so good to see you again.”
Kat rubbed her forehead. “What do you mean, again? It’s only been a couple of hours since I left you in front of the saloon. Where the hell have you been?” She glanced around the room. “And where the hell are we?”
“Uh-oh! Looks like she doesn’t know any more than you did when you arrived.”
Kat looked toward the door and saw three men standing in front of the window. One was David, and the other two were strangers. Well over six feet tall and lanky, the man who’d spoken had brown hair with flecks of gray and dark eyes. The other man was short and stocky, with blond hair and blue eyes.
Anna put her hand on Kat’s arm. “We’re in the Silver Rush Saloon in Hamilton, Nevada.”
Kat studied the room and then turned back to Anna. “Okay, joke’s over. Did I pass out or something when I fell down the stairs? Did you cart me off somewhere so you could play some elaborate joke on me?” She laughed. “I have to admit, as far as jokes go, this one’s a beaut.”
“The truth is always best, Anna. It’s also easier in the long run for everyone.” Win smiled at Kat as he walked over to stand next to David.
Kat jumped at the sound of Win’s voice behind her. She looked at Anna. “Yeah, the truth would be nice.”
Anna took a deep breath. “Okay, but I’d like to ask you a couple of questions.”
Kat nodded. “Okay.”
“What’s the last thing you remember?”
She thought for a moment. “I was searching for you. I’d gone through the entire town and then remembered you wanted a closer look at the saloon, so I came inside.” She shrugged. “I looked around and spotted the door to the cellar.” Wrinkling her forehead, she paused. “There was something that wasn’t right.” She tried to recall what she’d seen. “The basement was a mess, but there was a…” Kat frowned, biting her lip. She walked a couple of steps away, her glance darting around, and then came back to stand in front of Anna. “There was…”
“A big, red glowy circle.” Anna raised her arm and put it around Kat’s shoulders. “It sucked you in and sent you here.”
Kat looked around and frowned. “It sucked me in and sent me here.” When Anna nodded she laughed. “And just where is here?”
Anna looked toward the ceiling and cleared her throat. “It’s not so much of a where, as when.” She nodded toward the men standing by the door. “You wanted to know who they are. Well, let me introduce you.”
Anna crooked her finger, motioning the men closer. Her hand rose to the brunet’s shoulder. “This is Beauregard Martinson, otherwise known as Beau.” Her hand moved to the other man’s shoulder. “And this is Ezekiel Moses Bennington, otherwise known as Zeke.” Anna swallowed and rubbed Kat’s arm in a soothing gesture. “They’re my husbands, and you’re in Hamilton, Nevada. It’s September the seventeenth, 1899.”
Kat tensed, her temper flaring. She took a step back, her nails biting into her palms. “It’s not nice to try and pull the wool over your best friend’s eyes. What do you take me for?” She paused to catch her breath. “Oh, I know, this is payback for nagging you into making this trip.”
She turned and walked toward the door. “I’m getting out of here. I’m not gonna be the butt of anybody’s jokes no matter how good of friends we are.” She pulled open the door and froze. The rotting buildings were gone and in their place were solid, weathered structures. The dirt road looked well-traveled, and there were horses tied up in front of several of the buildings.
Holding her breath, she whirled around to stare at Anna. “You said it’s 1899?”
Anna nodded and wrapped her arms around her waist. “Yes, Kat. For me, it’s been twenty-eight years since you walked down the road toward the mill, leaving me to look through the town. You’ve traveled one hundred and thirteen years into the past.”
Kat heard a roaring sound in her ears while white spots danced in front of her eyes. Then, blessed blackness settled around her.

“All Aboard!”
“Stay close, guys.” Sarah began leading them toward the train. She turned around to make sure the boys were staying together and collided with a hard body. She turned, already offering an apology. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was…” She looked up into the face of the most handsome man she’d ever seen. He was tall, well over six feet, and muscular with brown hair and eyes. She could feel herself blushing.
“I’m sorry, young man. I wasn’t watching where I was going.” He glanced at the children and frowned, then turned back to Sarah. “My name is Isaac West, but you can call me Ike.” He held his hand out and looked at Sarah expectantly.
Reluctantly, Sarah placed her hand in his and shook it vigorously, like she thought a man would. She narrowed her eyes when she caught his slight smirk. “I’m Samuel…” She coughed to hide her hesitation. “Kees, Samuel Kees.”
Ike frowned and stared at the children huddled together. “Samuel, huh? Well, Samuel, are these your kids?”
Sarah tried to move the children further toward the train. “No, these are my sisters and brother. We’re traveling to meet up with our uncle. If you’ll excuse me, I wanna make sure we get on the train and get seats together.
Ike tipped his hat. “Pleasure to meet you, young man. Enjoy your trip. I’m sure I’ll see you around since we’re taking the same train.”
Sarah watched as he strolled toward the ticket counter. Zeke pulled on her arm. “What is it, Zeke?” she whispered.
“Are you okay, Samuel? Your face is getting mighty red.”
Sarah groaned to herself. “Come on, let’s get aboard and find some seats.

* * * *

Ike stopped and watched through the train’s window as the young boy seated the children on the train. All five of them squeezed into three seats. Something didn’t feel right. There was something off about the boy, but he couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Even the kids didn’t seem quite right.
He’d been working as a bounty hunter the past few years, trying to earn enough money to join up with his brother in Big Springs. They’d come west several years back with the idea of starting up a farm together. They’d planned on finding themselves a wife and settling down to raise a family. They’d just started settling in when they got word their Pa was real sick. One of them had to go home to help out their Ma.
Ike had always gotten along better with his Pa, so they decided he would travel home. His brother, Abe, took on the job of sheriff in Big Springs so he could earn money toward their dream while Ike was away. Ike did everything he could, but it hadn’t helped. Their Pa had succumbed to his ailment and passed away not long after he’d arrived. Ike had stayed on and helped his Ma settle in at her brother’s farm. It had cost a lot to get her moved, so he’d had to find a way to earn some more money toward his own dreams.
He’d accidently managed to bring in his first contract as a bounty hunter. He’d come across a man on the road after his horse had thrown him and run off. Turned out, the man had a hundred dollar bounty on his head. When he’d tried to steal Ike’s horse, he’d knocked him out and taken him to the sheriff. When he’d realized how much money he could bring in from bounty hunting, he’d kept after it. For the past two years he’d been on one job after another. Now, he had a nice nest egg, and he was ready to go home to Big Springs.
Ike boarded the train and took a seat a few rows back from the traveling family. He leaned back and pushed his hat over his eyes. He had to figure out a way to find out what was going on with Samuel Kees because he was sure hiding something. He sighed and settled further onto the hard bench. There was time to get some rest before he had to confront the boy. They wouldn’t make any stops for a couple of hours. It was going to be a long trip.
