“What’s up, Doc?”

Cary blinked. For just a second the incredible creature standing before him had sprouted ears. They’d been the cutest, fuzziest white ears, sticking almost straight up from the top of her beautiful head, but they’d definitely been there one second and gone the next.

No one else had seemed to notice, so he thought he must have imagined it. He couldn’t help thinking it was a strange trick for his mind to play the first time he laid eyes on a gorgeous female.

To cover his confusion he laughed. “Like I haven’t heard that one before.”

Vivica Breckenridge chewed her bottom lip, but her smile stayed fixed. “Sorry, I couldn’t resist.”

She was petite, probably no taller than five foot four inches, lushly curved, and wore her silky black hair in a classy bob that angled to her chin. Her brown eyes were wide, filled with mischief, and lined in kohl-colored lashes that looked as if they were an inch long. They fluttered charmingly against her silky brown cheek as she glanced at their clasped hands. Her nose was short and narrow, widening at the end, and the delicate nostrils flared softly as she looked him over. Her sumptuous lips were sexy beneath chocolate-brown lipstick.

He had a sudden, irrepressible desire to nibble those lips.

“That’s crazy talk, Ads. Visiting your family is not like being castrated with a rusty can opener.”

Adam grimaced and flung a third pair of jeans into his suitcase. “Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s worse.”

Dirk lifted a dark-blond eyebrow. “You know you’re only going to be there for two days, right?”

“Two days and three very long nights.” Adam threw him a suspicious look. “What’s your point?”

Dirk walked over and slid his arms around Adam’s waist, pulling him in for a hug. “I think three pairs of jeans and four shirts is overkill, babe.”

Adam leaned into him and sighed. “I need lots of clothes, in case I have to flee over the border.”

Laughing, Dirk placed his hands on Adam’s shoulders and started to rub. “What border is that? Kentucky or Illinois?”

“Har de har har, Dirk. You’ve met my family right? You know how stressful this is going to be. I’ll probably sweat through three of those shirts the first night.” He glanced worriedly toward the suitcase. “Maybe I should add another one.”

Dirk grabbed his arm as he turned toward the closet. “You’re compensating.”

Adam pulled free, heading for the dresser. “Uh, huh. Whatever that means.”

“It means you’re channeling your fears of interacting with your dad into the exterior representation of your personality.”

Adam turned from the dresser with several pairs of socks in his hands. “Exterior, huh…? What the hell are you talking about, Williams?”

Dirk fixed a piercing green gaze on Adam, looking down a strong, almost too large nose at his lover and pursing his cupid’s bow mouth with irritation. “The way you dress. Your hair…”

Adam flung the socks into the overburdened suitcase. “What about my hair?”

Dirk reached over and slipped his fingers through the newly shorn, dark-brown strands. “You look like a Marine.”
Adam grinned, dancing his eyebrows. “You wanna play army?”

“I think Marines are technically part of the Navy, babe.”

Adam expelled a breath. “Being a know-it-all is not one of your better qualities, Williams.”

Dirk stared at him for a long moment and then said. “You cut your hair because you’re trying to make your dad think you’re something you’re not. You’re fussing over your clothes because it’s the one thing in the upcoming situation you can control. And you’re fussing at me because you know I’ll still love you even after you piss me off.”

Adam zipped his suitcase up and lifted it to the floor. “You’ve been insufferable ever since you played that psychiatrist in Mindless Love.”

Dirk grinned. “I rocked that role.”

“Yeah. Well…” Adam rolled his suitcase toward Dirk. “Playing a psychiatrist in a movie doesn’t make you one.”

Dirk tucked his fingers into the waistline of Adam’s jeans and tugged him close. “And playing an asshole in real life doesn’t make you one.” Dirk frowned. “Though at the moment you’re really convincing in the role.”

Pratt went into the rest room and splashed cool water on his face. He glanced quickly into the mirror, grimacing. He looked like hell. But he felt good despite the long night. Seeing Anna smile again made it worth every bit of work.

Morticia had helped, as had Joss and Bess, and between the four of them they’d managed to pull some semblance of order back into Anna’s treasured work space. She’d still be hard pressed to pull the festival displays together, but at least she could see what she had to work with.

He dried his face and hands and headed into the break room. The delicious aroma of coffee met him well before he reached the door. “That smells amazing—”

Warm, soft woman enfolded him, the delicious scent of vanilla and roses engulfing his senses. Exquisite lips touched his and the world narrowed down to the sensations her kiss and nearness caused. Pratt’s arms went around her waist as he gave himself over to the sweetness of the kiss.

Anna’s lips parted and she swiped her tongue over his lips, prompting him to let her in. Pratt gladly obliged, his tongue tangling hungrily with hers. Her hands slipped upward, rubbing his back in gentle circles as her body pressed deliciously against his.

Pratt’s body exploded into full-blown need, spurred into a near-painful state by the simple press of her soft body and the sweet taste of her mouth. When she broke the kiss they were both slightly breathless.

She touched his lips with the tip of one finger and he kissed it. “Not that I’m complaining but…what was that for?”

“That was thank you. I can’t believe you worked all night setting this place to rights. I’ll never be able to repay you.”

He lowered his head and rubbed noses with her, enjoying the tender swell of her breasts against his chest. “I think you just did.”

The guard behind him shoved him inside and the other guard slammed the door closed. He heard the sound of a key turning in the lock and ran to the door. The knob wouldn’t turn. He pounded on the door with his fists. “I want a lawyer!”

“That won’t be necessary, Señor Hoale.”

Adam whipped around, his heart in his throat. A man stood at the back of the room, half in the shadows. He wore an ugly dark blue uniform with a wide black belt around his waist. A black, military style hat dipped low over his face, showing only a square jaw and strong chin, which was decorated by a sexy little goatee. “Who the hell are you?”

The man pushed away from the wall and started toward him, his gloved hands coming into view. He held a short, black leather whip in one hand. “I’m your worst nightmare.”

The bad movie line was delivered with a decidedly Hispanic accent. Had Adam somehow gotten on the wrong side of the Mexican police? Not easy to do when you live in Indiana. He swallowed hard. “Look, I don’t know what’s going on…”

“Shut up, Señor Hoale.” The man’s gruff voice seemed somehow familiar and Adam tilted his head, trying to get a better look at him under the hat. The stranger walked with a slight limp, his right leg not bending as well as the left. Adam frowned. He didn’t know anybody with a limp.

The other man stopped in front of him and stuck the whip under Adam’s chin, forcing his gaze upward. “Nothing you can say right now will help and you’ll only piss me off so I’d advise you to keep your mouth closed and listen.”

Adam experienced a strong sense of déjà vu. He tried to lower his chin to get a look at the man again. The whip tightened against his chin. The man pressed closer, his lips stopping close enough to Adam’s ear that it tickled when he spoke. “You are a very sexy man, Señor Hoale.”

Adam blinked, frowned, and started to rebuke the other man. But when the stranger cupped his crotch in one, black-gloved hand, Adam coughed out a laugh, finally realizing why the words and the persona seemed so familiar. It was corrupt Police Commander Cristiano Inocente from Dirk’s last action film, Murder Especial.

Adam grinned. “I’m gonna kick your ass, Commander.”

Dirk’s tongue slipped out and tasted the rim of Adam’s ear. “I don’t think so, guapo. You will scream like a girl as I take you from behind.” The whip slipped down his throat and shoved past the buttons on his shirt, rubbing his nipples until they were rigid.

Excerpt:

The afternoon was aging. A dense, buggy heat had settled down over the trees, and the constant drone of mosquitoes gave their hapless trek through the dense undergrowth a particularly annoying edge.

Edgar Reeves had been right when he’d said the trees had grown up all around the cabin. The scarred, weed infused remains of the old building stood cheek to jowl with a sizeable army of thick trunked green warriors. Their shade cast the old bones in shadow and kept them moist enough to retain their shape without crumbling, while the dense cover probably kept the rain away and allowed the skeleton to age with grace.

One wall of the structure was covered in moss and some kind of hearty vine. The glassless window on that side was nearly obscured by the determined green stuff. Though the frame where a door had most likely once been was empty, the ground leading up to the door was cleared of brush, as if someone came to the cabin on a fairly regular basis.

Maddy’s pretty cheeks were rosy and a fine sheen of sweat made her glisten in the dappled light beneath the trees. She swiped a filthy hand over her face and looked at Adam. “It’s incredible.”

Adam frowned. They’d fought their way through the dense woods and bugs and god knew what else to find the cabin, spending the better part of two hours doing it, and the moment Adam stepped from the trees and saw the structure, he’d known it was a mistake. The place just reached over and wrapped cold, bony fingers around his heart, squeezing with cold malevolence as if to ask, “Why? Why didn’t you do something about this a long time ago?”

Looking at it, even rationalizing that the passage of time and changes wrought by climate and nature had reformed the structure into something sad and despicable, Adam couldn’t help the painful jolt it gave his heart to think about the people who’d been relegated to its rustic bosom all those decades earlier.

It was probably safe to say that Adam had some guilt issues about the whole slavery thing.

The spiny leaved green growth behind them thrashed wildly and colorful language stung the air. The woods finally spit Mink, red faced and manically scratching, into the small cleared space where the cabin stood.

“Just step on my damn throat and be done with it!” He exclaimed as he surged toward them. Something long, determined, and green clung to one of his rubber legs with the tenacity of steel bands and Mink nearly went down under its clingy grasp. “I can’t believe I let you two talk me into this.”

When his friends didn’t respond to his outburst, Mink glanced in the direction they were both staring. “Well strap me into a milking machine and hit the on switch,” he murmured.
The aged, log walls seemed to collect the dappled light of the small clearing and kill it, submerging it under years of black taint. The logs rose to about a height of six feet and then succumbed to a clutch of mud and tangled grass that must have once been a roof. The gray mud had dried to a kind of concrete substance that was probably impervious to most anything after more than a century of exposure. The whole thing gave off an aura of rejection, warning onlookers away from its pain-filled presence.

Maddy finally stirred and moved toward the cabin.

“You’re not going inside?” Mink’s voice was strident with emotion.

She stopped, jerked around and frowned at him. “Of course. We came all this way.”

“It might not be safe, Mads,” Adam told her. “I mean…structurally.”

“She glanced back toward the cabin and thought about that for a moment. “I’ll just stand in the doorway then and look inside.”

Adam nodded, staying right where he was. He had no desire whatsoever to become any more intimately acquainted with the terrible place.

Maddy walked slowly, her hands up in front of her as if prepared to fend off an attack. Adam knew the only attack she might have to defend against was one of horror at the timeless evil saturating the cabin’s rustic walls.

She stopped in the doorway and leaned inward, poking her head just beyond the frame where the door had once been. Her gasp brought Adam jerking forward to protect. “What is it, Mads? What’s wrong?”

She turned an expression filled more with surprise than horror in his direction. “Somebody’s been here recently. There are fresh flowers on the floor.”

Adam stopped beside her and peered inside. The smell of stale dirt and old wood assailed him, making his nose itch with a building sneeze. The lighting inside the old cabin was dim and dappled, sneaking through lost chinking and wafting through the single, glassless window. Sitting in the very center of the musty space, bathed in the weak light from the window, a scattered bunch of yellow daisies drooped against the dusty ground.

They couldn’t have been there more than a couple of days.

“Holy shit.” Maddy whispered, grabbing Adam’s arm. “Adam…”

Adam followed the direction of his business partner’s gaze, sliding upward from the bunch of flowers. He gasped. A thick, rough rope hung from the ceiling, flung over the single beam defining the center of the roof, and hanging down about a foot from the beam. The end of the bristly rope was twisted and looped into the perfect noose.

“Fuck me.” The cold fingers around Adam’s heart tightened, cutting off the air in his chest and sending a cold sweat flashing through him.

The noose was dancing softly on a breeze, waving and spinning over the scattered array of drying flowers. Outside the cabin, not a single wisp of a breeze touched Adam’s clammy skin.

Mink shoved his face between Adam’s and Maddy’s. “What’s in there?”

The strident sound of Mink’s voice startled the shadows into action. The ceiling of the cabin started to bubble, and a soundless wave of inky black suddenly shot downward and headed directly toward them.
Adam screamed like a girl and stumbled backward, yanking Maddy down to the ground with him and flinging himself over her. A cool, musty wind rushed past and something touched Adam’s skin and hair with spectral fingers, leaving behind the bright tang of pain. Beneath him Maddy started to chant the Lord’s Prayer, which was a notable event since Adam had never seen his partner enter a church or utter a single statement of belief in a higher power in all the years he’d known her.

The dark wave seemed to go on and on, for several minutes. When it finally passed and the clearing around the cabin settled into silence, Adam suddenly remembered Mink.

He slowly cranked his head around and peered up at the spot where he’d last seen his high-strung friend. Mink didn’t look as if he’d moved. He appeared to have simply settled in to ride out the horror. His small, perfectly manicured hands were splayed in front of him as if he were performing a number in a Broadway musical. His rubber clad legs were spread wide, the massive booted feet firmly planted in the dirt, and his head was bowed, the ridiculously enormous bill of the dumb fuck hat covering his face. On closer inspection, Adam saw that Mink’s narrow shoulders shook with a barely discernible tremor.
Adam and Maddy sat up and Adam said, “Mink?”

The overlarge bill slowly lifted and Mink’s fingers curved inward, into fists. He turned to Adam, only the angry twist of his lips visible beneath the shadow of the stupid hat. “Adam. Those were bats. I was just attacked by an angry mob of nasty, filthy, flying rats.” He glared down at them. “Bats. Adam. I told you I didn’t want to come out here. You forced me. You brought a terrified, gay as a peacock, city born and bred realtor into the jungle and subjected him to a haunted cabin and an angry mob of bats. I think I wet myself. Adam, I’m gonna slosh when I walk.” He stopped, filling his narrow chest with a shaky breath. “That was the worst two minutes of my life. I’ll probably need a therapist. What do you have to say for yourself, Adam Hoale?”

Adam and Maddy shared a glance. Maddy’s cheeks were pink, her lips rolled inward in an obvious attempt to keep from smiling. Adam widened his eyes, giving his head a tiny warning shake. Mink was a man on the edge. A harpy perched on the precipice. A single wrong step and they’d send him into his shrieking mad man persona. That was something they tried to avoid at all costs. Besides, it might startle the bats into returning to their roost.

Steeling himself, Adam finally turned toward Mink and said the only thing he could under the circumstances. “Who knew the dumb fuck hat would come in handy?”

Maddy snorted out a laugh and started to climb to her feet. Mink’s mouth snapped shut and he lifted a hand, pointing a shaky finger at them, his body rigid with anger. His lips parted, but nothing came out.

The unmistakable sound of a shotgun being cocked filled the silence. “Who the hell are you, and what are you doing on my property?”

BRIGHT CITY LIGHTS by Declan Sands

BRIGHT CITY LIGHTS by Declan Sands

City of Lights Series Book 1

Sometimes it's harder to be together than it is to be apart.

Brant is a politician with a secret that's becoming harder and harder to contain. As mayor of Bright City, he's determined to keep the city free of shifters to protect his secret.

The two men share a fair amount of distrust, along with a smoldering history that threatens to drag them under again. The bike’s single headlight swung over trees and flared against open land as Rabb turned onto the dirt road leading to the running grounds. The trip to the forest had taken two hours. Two hours of feeling Brant pressed against him. Two hours of smelling the other man’s incredible scent—the scent that still permeated his dreams every single night.

Two hours of a raging hard-on he couldn’t possibly ignore.

Brant’s hands resting lightly on his thighs didn’t help. Or the soft wash of his breath bathing the back of Rabb’s neck. At least Brant couldn’t hear the embarrassing thud of Rabb’s heart beneath his ribs. The husky roar of the bike saved Rabb some serious embarrassment on that score.

He pulled the bike alongside a line of cars, trucks, and bikes and stopped. The silence that met their ears when he killed the engine seemed almost louder than the throaty rumble of his Yamaha.

Cricket song throbbed through the velvet black night, driven past on a soft breeze that carried the scent of shifters. Lots of them. Rabb looked at Brant. “Whatever happens, stay close to me.”

Brant’s handsome face looked ghostly in the moonlight. “That isn’t exactly reassuring.”

Rabb shrugged, grinning wickedly. “Maybe I’m trying to keep you close for other reasons.”

Brant laughed. “Yeah, I wouldn’t put it past you.”

“Come on.”

They left the small spot of flattened grass that served as the parking area and moved into the trees. Though dense and claustrophobic, the forest wasn’t as uniform as it appeared from the road. They followed a narrow, path worn into dirt by shifters and their prey. Looking close, Rabb could see small signs of the packs’ passing. Small, broken limbs and mashed vegetation told a story only the most observant would recognize.

The night enveloped them. The woods seemed empty until Rabb tuned his senses to it, tapping into an entire ecosystem that was replete with warm and cold blooded inhabitants of all shapes and sizes.

The air between the trees was cool and damp and the earth beneath their shoes was rich with the scent of all the decades that had passed before.

Rabb focused on all of it, while keeping one ear on Brant, making sure he stayed close. He hadn’t been teasing the other man, or trying to score, he was worried about bringing him there. The pack wouldn’t appreciate his bringing an enemy to their most sacred place. In fact it was a pretty sure bet they’d be royally pissed. Rabb would be the only thing standing between Brant and a painful eviction.

Or worse.

Secrets lived long and prospered in the running grounds. Enemies were extinguished, soul and body, there. Mistakes were permanently obscured. And grudges were laid to rest, along with the losers.

Rabb would have his hands full keeping Brant from becoming a permanent part of the landscape.

They hadn’t gone far before Rabb smelled wood smoke. He stopped, throwing out a hand to halt Brant. “Stay behind me and keep your mouth shut. No matter what.” He turned and fixed the other man with a warning look. “Understand?”

Brant nodded but his expression held far too much arrogance for Rabb’s comfort. “I mean it, Brant. There are no laws here except pack law. You’re in our territory now. I’m the only insurance you have that you’ll walk out of here tonight.”

Brant crossed arms over chest, belligerent. “Which totally explains why you insisted I bring no guards.”

“I had no choice, fang. One look at your conglomeration of black suited thugs and this would have been a blood bath.”

Brant glared at him. Rabb could deal with that. It was the pinpoint of fear in the icy gaze that did him in. “Look, you’re just going to have to trust me. The pack is understandably jumpy right now. Someone is targeting us and when that happens we tend to contract and isolate. You’re not pack so you’ll be suspect. They aren’t going to care that we slept together once. A long time ago.”

“It was a hell of a lot more than once,” Brant offered.

“You know what I mean.”

They stared hard at each other for another minute and then Brant finally sighed. “Okay. I’m trusting you with my life, wolf. Let’s see if you can take better care of it than you took with my heart.”

Rabb felt the sting of that remark all the way to his gut. But it wasn’t the time or place to get into it. “I’ll do as well as you’ll let me. Just like last time.”

He turned away and started forward, not wanting to give Brant the chance to say anything else. Their past was their past and he really didn’t want to rehash it—now or ever. Some relationships just weren’t meant to be.

Theirs was apparently one of them.

Golden firelight danced through the trees as Rabb emerged into a small clearing. The fire raged at the center of the space, filling the sky with soft, gray smoke. Dozens of people stood around the flame, their faces blank and their muscles taut with anger.

On the ground next to the blaze was a slim form, wrapped in a blanket. Kneeling on the ground next to the woman was her mate, his head bowed. He was covered in blood, most likely some of it hers, and his big hands were clenched in tight fists at his sides.

As Rabb stepped out all heads turned in his direction. Almost immediately, faces softened, legs buckled, and several shifters hit the ground, prostrate with grief. A soft keening sound filled the night. One of the women sobbed, her head dropping back on the heartfelt sound.

Rabb was their alpha. Pack law said they showed no emotion until the time was right. Until all was in place. With Rabb’s arrival the pack could begin the grieving process. They wasted no time.

Brant stepped out behind him and the mood changed with the swiftness of a hatchet slamming into wood. Tension pulsed across the space, hitting Rabb with the fierceness of actual violence.

Slowly, in movements borne of exquisite pain, the mate of the slain woman stood and turned. His bloodied face was purple with rage, his hard eyes bright with it. His gaze found Brant and his jaw worked, the vein at the side of his throat throbbing with rage. “Good. You brought us a sacrifice. Let the blood feast begin.” He turned to the waiting shifters. “Tonight, let the woods fill with the sound of screams and the scent of death as we avenge our fallen packmate.”

Rabb’s muscles tightened, ready to fight if he had to. He’d known it was coming but even he was shocked by the swiftness with which it occurred. As the entire pack moved forward, all eyes fixed on Brant, the only sound Rabb heard was the startled gulp of the vampire standing at his back.

~Excerpt~

Deirdre shoved the mall door open and walked out into a bitterly cold night. An icy breeze pummeled her, flinging small, bright snowflakes into her face and down the neckline of her sweater. “Damn!” Deirdre sucked air, nearly dropping her bags. Momentarily disoriented in the thick fall of snow, she looked around for her car, finding it parked at the far edge of the nearly empty lot. It was already covered in a thick blanket of snow. “Double and triple damn.”

She tucked her head and moved forward as quickly as she could with twenty pounds of Christmas bags hanging off her arms. The air swirled around her and Deirdre shivered, feeling suddenly dizzy. She stopped, closed her eyes and took a deep breath, coughing as she sucked snow into her lungs.

Opening her eyes again, she started toward the spot where she’d left her car. She walked for a few minutes and then looked up, thinking she should have gotten to her car already. She blinked. There was no car. Squinting through the dense curtain of snow, Deirdre turned in a slow circle. Maybe she’d gotten disoriented somehow.

Nothing. She realized with a horrified gasp that she couldn’t even see the mall.

Air swirled around her again and a light flashed past. A muffled explosion sprayed snow and ice into the air a few feet to her left. Deirdre gave a little scream.

What the hell?

The air swirled past and this time, something grabbed her. She shrieked, dropping her bags, as she was pulled sideways and down.

A large hand covered her mouth. “Shh! I’ll protect you, princess. Just remain quiet and let me deal with them.”

She tried to look at the man behind the husky voice but when she turned her head her face saw only the inside of her fur-lined hood. Deirdre tugged the hood away from her face just in time to see a firm, round buttock disappearing into the curtain of snow. More flashes sliced through the snow and the brief illumination showed Deirdre the large rock her invisible savior had shoved her behind.

A distant, muffled scream made Deirdre cringe. What would she do if her savior didn’t survive his rescue. And what the hell was she being rescued from anyway?

She listened carefully for another minute but heard nothing. Finally the now familiar sense of swirling air warned her that someone had joined her in her hiding spot. This time when she looked up it was into the jewel-green gaze of a man with shoulder length white hair and a sexy square jaw covered in stubble. “Who are you?”

He stood, bowing low before her. “Allain Darcassan Erendriel at your service, princess.”

She frowned. “How about if I just call you Al?”

Bobby’s was an old style gym that smelled like sweat and focused on the basics. There was a pool, but there were no yoga classes at Bobby’s and no spin classes. The closest Bobby’s got to spin was when Zeke the personal trainer decided you weren’t pedaling fast enough on one of the gym’s scarred and ancient stationary bikes and started screaming into your face like a drill sergeant.

Zeke was straight as the edge of an architect’s ruler but he treated Adam the same as everyone else. Brief and brusque. Zeke was even gruff when he smiled. The only softness he ever showed was directed at Walter.

For his part, Walter adored Zeke, which was why Adam knew Zeke was a good guy. Dogs had a great sense of people—much better than their human friends.

The gruff trainer was well over six feet tall and buff, with rock-hard abs and bulging biceps and thighs, and he wore his brown hair short and spiky. He ruled his roost with an iron fist and very little in the way of positive reinforcement. With Zeke you got negative reinforcement and nuclear level negative reinforcement.

He even yelled at Maddy.

Nobody yelled at Maddy.

As soon as Adam opened the door Walter trotted past him and headed straight for Zeke. The big man was all the way across the large, main room, “explaining” to Maddy that she needed to use the incline controls on the treadmill or she was gonna have cellulite bubbles the size of deer shot on her thighs. According to him, the event could occur at any moment because of her general lack of motivation.

Maddy’s pretty pixie face had turned the color of rich cream and she was so “inclined” by the time Adam hit the midway point of the room that she had to work to keep from sliding off the back of the treadmill.

He wondered if he could use the cellulite threat to get her to fill out her design planning forms more completely.

“Hey, Adam!”

Adam glanced up, grinning at the man hailing him with a boxing-glove-covered hand from the ring that dominated the center of the gym. “Hey, Bobby! Lookin’ good. Nice ass.”

Bobby laughed, his ruddy face mostly hidden behind a helmet and his short, sturdy body glistening with sweat. Bobby’s boxing partner glanced at Adam, looking nervous behind his helmet. Adam winked at the man and kept moving, grinning at Bobby’s deep laughter behind him.

“He’s just tweakin’ ya, Peterson. Chill out.”

Bobby and Adam had been friends for years and Adam liked to tease him. Bobby showed every indication of enjoying the playful flirting, though he wasn’t gay. He seemed to genuinely like Adam and knew that Adam couldn’t help trying to get a rise out of the homophobes in the gym. No pun intended. There weren’t a lot of them. Bobby’s was generally a laid back, anything goes, kind of place. But it was one of few old-style gyms left so it still drew its share of testosterone drenched Neanderthals.

Adam had never been able to resist twisting the dicks of the cavemen types.

Zeke was bent over Walter, speaking softly to him to hide the fact that he was talking baby talk as he scratched his floppy ears. Walter’s thick fringe of a tail beat against Zeke’s massive thigh, his brown eyes narrowed in pleasure.

Zeke looked up at Adam as he approached. “I hope you’re ready to work a little harder this week, Hoale.”

Adam grinned. “You didn’t think an hour in the pool was a hard enough workout last time?”

Zeke swore, the very core of his phenomenal work ethic cringing at the thought. “Pansy ass. If you don’t sweat through your clothes you haven’t worked out.” He jabbed Adam in the chest and Adam had to fight to keep from flinching. He was pretty sure he’d have a Zeke digit-sized bruise on his chest later. “I’m all yours today, Zeke. Do with me what you will.”

A strange wheezing noise wafted over them and both men turned to Maddy. She’d attained a strange purple-puce color and Adam was pretty sure she was foaming at the mouth.

She tried to lift a hand in greeting but when she did she skidded backward, almost sliding all the way off the treadmill before she grabbed the handle and saved herself at the last second.

Zeke frowned. “Step it up, Rodgers. I’ve had Sunday afternoon strolls through the Arboretum that were faster than that.”

Adam felt he had to intervene. Maddy was way too competitive for her own good. She wouldn’t push back as long as Zeke pushed her forward. “I’m thinking, from the color of her face, she might be about a wheeze away from 9-1-1, man.”

Zeke snorted. “She’s fine. I’m tryin’ to put hair on her chest.” The poking digit found its way to Adam’s poor, bruised chest again, “Don’t infect her with your pansy-assed work-less ethic, Hoale.” Zeke headed toward the weight bench on the other side of the room.

Adam turned a look of stark terror on Maddy and she wheezed out a laugh, almost falling off the treadmill as she saluted him. Adam slashed a hand across his throat and trudged after the big man. The last time he’d let Zeke guide him in a weight bench workout, he’d barely been able to lift his arms for a week.

Behind him, the treadmill slowed and he heard the whir of the incline dropping back to level. Maddy’s wheezing lessened as she walked out her cool down.

He hoped she appreciated what he’d done for her.

Rael’s frown deepened as his body warmed. The woman gliding toward him across the bar was tall, possibly over six feet, with waist length white-blond hair that swayed heavily around softly rounded hips when she walked.

Her eyes were wide, green, and surrounded by thick, dark gold lashes. Her face was oval, on the pale side, and she had a long, aquiline nose. Her mouth was full, pink, and made his loins clench with sudden need.
If it weren’t for the predator-like stride and the neck to toe black leather, Rael might be tempted to call her an angel. But this woman was no angel.

He wanted to throw Kane a questioning glance, but he couldn’t seem to pull his hungry gaze away from her.

She stopped a few feet away from his table, cocking her head prettily. “Mind if I join you?”

Her voice was warm silk, with rough edges that made it just the tiniest bit husky. It was deep for a woman, but completely feminine.

Kane was too discomfited by his reaction to her to be polite. He flipped a hand toward the chair across from his. He didn’t speak. Didn’t trust himself to.

The full, soft lips spread in a smile and her eyes sparked. She slid into the chair next to him, facing the bar.
A drink suddenly appeared in front of him and Rael jumped, looking up into Kane’s laughing face. “You’re always in stealth mode, man.”

Kane gave the siren sitting next to him some fruity looking concoction and winked at her. “Stealth has saved my life more than once, Rael. You of all people should know that.” Kane’s face briefly darkened with emotion.

Rael gave his friend an understanding look. He remembered all too well the times Kane referred to. Rael had met Kane in Germany in the 1940s, before he’d been turned. He’d been a brave and talented soldier, unfortunately he hadn’t been quick enough on his feet to avoid the creature who’d turned him.

Kane quickly shook off his sadness. “Rael, this is Bellona. Now you’re not strangers.” He turned on his heel and sauntered back to the bar, stopping to chat several times along the way.

Rael knew because he watched his friend rather than looking at the woman sitting beside him. He could feel her heat from two feet away. Her warm, sweet scent surrounded him.

The air between them fairly sizzled with tension. Sexual tension. It had been a long, long time since Rael had had to deal with sexual tension.

Tension of almost every other kind was his constant companion. But the fun kind of tension…not so much.
“I’m sensing resistance to my charms.”

When he looked at her she was grinning. It wasn’t the way he’d expected their conversation to start. But he figured it was as good a place as any. “Nothing personal. I don’t much like companionship.”

Incredibly, she laughed. Really laughed. So hard that tears ran from her gorgeous, green eyes.

He leaned back in his chair and watched her, not even bothering to hide the incredulity on his face. “You find that funny? Really?”

She nodded, swiped the back of one hand over her wet cheeks, and sipped her drink. “Mmm, this is good.”
Rael figured he’d steer them back to safe ground. “What is that anyway?”

“Fallen Angel.”

Rael spit beer across the table. She leaned back to avoid being spattered. “What?” His voice sounded choked. He turned and glared at Kane.

The vamp just laughed and saluted him.

“Very refreshing. I’ve decided I like fallen angels.”

He searched her face carefully. Was she teasing him? Impossible. She couldn’t know…Yup, there was definitely a spark in her green eyes. She knew.

“Look…Bella…”

“Bellona.”

“Bellona, I don’t know what Kane told you…”

“He didn’t tell me anything…directly. But I’m not stupid. Valkyrie are trained very early to determine the supernatural persuasion of our prey…”

Rael’s eyes widened. “Wait…valkyrie…prey?”

She took another sip of her drink. “Don’t worry, I’m off the clock. You wouldn’t fit my parameters anyway. In fact…that’s what I like about you.” Her pink tongue slid across her lips, mopping up the last little bit of the fruity concoction she’d swallowed.

Rael realized his mouth was hanging open and slammed it shut. He would not let himself get pulled into her sensual sphere. He’d never met a valkyrie, but he’d read about them. Warriors, every last one of them. Conscripted by the gods to transport heroes to the famed Valhalla in preparation for some big war. The valkyrie themselves had foreseen the death of said gods, and the gods had decreed that they would help them avoid the deaths the sisters had foreseen.

Personally, as a fallen angel, Rael knew all too well that some things couldn’t be avoided. If they could, he’d have avoided being branded a dark angel. And it would serve him well to remember how he’d fallen. He swallowed the last sip of his beer and stood up. “I won’t say it hasn’t been interesting, but…”

The floor beneath his feet rumbled and moved just a little. Across the room, the glasses and bottles behind the bar clanked together. Kane caught an antique beer stein before it hit the floor.

Rael fell back into his chair. He looked at Bellona. She was grinning. He wondered if she’d even noticed the small earthquake.

“I’d take that as a sign if I were you.” She told him a little smugly. “You should stay with me.”

He frowned. “No offense. You’re a beautiful woman, but around here earthquakes aren’t signs, they’re facts of life.”

Bellona shrugged. “Sometimes things aren’t what they seem, Rael the fallen angel.”

Excerpt:

“My baby sister is a veritable sewer.” Cia informed me. “She’s got snot and drool constantly running out of her face and horrible, unmentionable stuff spewing from her other end every five minutes. We’d be doing the world a favor if we could figure out how to address some of that pollution.”

Obviously, Cia hadn’t taken well to the recently acquired knowledge, about fifteen months ago to be exact, that her parents were not only still having sex, but had, apparently through that most disgusting of parental activities, managed to finally spawn the little sister Cia had never wanted and refused to love.

While most girls enjoyed having a younger sibling to mold and protect, Cia had been far too happy with her solo princess role in the Plink castle. And, after fifteen years of sibling free bliss, she’d thought she was home free. But then her parents had apparently had too much to drink one night and decided to perform deviant acts together.

The results had been horrendous.

Now Cia had to grudgingly share her parents’ attention, sexual deviants though they apparently were…I mean, who has sex at the richly fermented age of thirty-eight. It’s just disgusting!

“I don’t think we can get rid of all the babies in the world, though the amount of CO2 they dispense is definitely a factor in the current Ozone layer problem.”

“Maybe we could just put them all in eco-friendly bubbles.”

I grinned at Cia as we reached our cars, sitting side by side at the furthest edge of the school parking lot as always. “Bubble babies? It’s worth some thought I guess.”

Cia opened her car door and threw her overstuffed book bag inside. Tossing her chin length, black bob, she widened her startling green eyes and grinned at me. “I’ll call you tonight and we’ll form our thesis.”

I nodded, thinking that at least our idea would be unique.

Cia honked as she pulled away and I waved. I climbed behind the wheel of my car. Before I turned the key I dug in my purse for my cell phone and turned it on. My parents, being seriously out of sync with the rest of society when it came to such necessities as cell phones, texting, and Internet surfing, made me keep my phone off during class hours under the mistaken belief that it would keep me more focused on my work.

Alas, they’d just forced me to use more prehistoric means of communication. Throwing message balls across the room, saying I had to go to the bathroom so I could find and talk to one of my friends in the library, and writing notes on the bathroom wall in siren red lipstick were effective in the long run, but caused more lost work time in my average day than a simple, “wht r u waring 2nit” would have ever caused.

The human parental unit was not the brightest bulb in the eco-friendly fluorescent light family. But they meant well. And they were good for handing out cash and baking gooey chocolate chip cookies during PMS moments.

I texted my Mom that I was going to stop at Target on the way home and hit send. Dropping my cell phone into the cup holder between the seats, I started my car.

When I looked up again there was someone standing in front of the car. I screamed and grabbed my throat with one hand…you know, your standard heroine in danger mannerism that did nothing to scare off the bad guy or, frankly, return your heart to your chest where it belonged.

It was him. The stupendously cute guy from Environmental Club. He just stood there, grinning at me.

Odd though this behavior was, I couldn’t help being drawn, moth like, to his sparkling smile and happy eyes. I opened my car door and stepped out, returning his smile. “Hi!”

His grin widened, a feat I wouldn’t have thought possible. “Hello.”
“Is there a problem?”

The twelve thousand watt smile dimmed slightly. “Problem?”

I twisted my lips, biting the side of my bottom lip, thinking. Could he really be this oblivious? “Did you need something from me?”

The smile slid completely away. “Need? I’m not sure. Why do you ask?”

Okay, this was getting surreal. “You’re standing there, staring at me. I just thought…you know…maybe you wanted to ask me something.”

He shrugged. “No. I’m just standing here.”

“Oh.” Alrighty then. “Okay.” I gave him a little wave, feeling stupid immediately. “It was nice meeting you.” Uber, uber stupid…I hadn’t met him, I’d just spoken to him, apparently for no reason.

He inclined his head, the smile sparkling from his face again. I started to lower myself back into my car but stopped halfway, pushing back out. I was unwilling to just leave it at my having made a fool of myself in front of a really cute guy. If I was gonna embarrass myself I’d do it up really big by pushing the issue.

He was still standing there staring at me, grinning.

“Why do I feel as if I’m missing a joke somewhere?”

He shoved his hands in his pockets and cocked his head. He wore his hair longer than the rest of the guys at school. It was thick and slightly curly. The sun sparked off the dark red strands. His shoulders were wide and his arms long.

His jeans were loose and his white tee-shirt tight. I’d already seen the back end of the black sneakers he wore. His wide, silver-gray eyes sparkled prettily and his lips were full and kissable. His jaw was square and carried the slight shadow of a beard. I figured he was about eighteen.

I licked my lips, wondering if he could see the zit on my nose from where he stood.
