“That’s crazy talk, Ads. Visiting your family is not like being castrated with a rusty can opener.”

Adam grimaced and flung a third pair of jeans into his suitcase. “Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s worse.”

Dirk lifted a dark-blond eyebrow. “You know you’re only going to be there for two days, right?”

“Two days and three very long nights.” Adam threw him a suspicious look. “What’s your point?”

Dirk walked over and slid his arms around Adam’s waist, pulling him in for a hug. “I think three pairs of jeans and four shirts is overkill, babe.”

Adam leaned into him and sighed. “I need lots of clothes, in case I have to flee over the border.”

Laughing, Dirk placed his hands on Adam’s shoulders and started to rub. “What border is that? Kentucky or Illinois?”

“Har de har har, Dirk. You’ve met my family right? You know how stressful this is going to be. I’ll probably sweat through three of those shirts the first night.” He glanced worriedly toward the suitcase. “Maybe I should add another one.”

Dirk grabbed his arm as he turned toward the closet. “You’re compensating.”

Adam pulled free, heading for the dresser. “Uh, huh. Whatever that means.”

“It means you’re channeling your fears of interacting with your dad into the exterior representation of your personality.”

Adam turned from the dresser with several pairs of socks in his hands. “Exterior, huh…? What the hell are you talking about, Williams?”

Dirk fixed a piercing green gaze on Adam, looking down a strong, almost too large nose at his lover and pursing his cupid’s bow mouth with irritation. “The way you dress. Your hair…”

Adam flung the socks into the overburdened suitcase. “What about my hair?”

Dirk reached over and slipped his fingers through the newly shorn, dark-brown strands. “You look like a Marine.”
Adam grinned, dancing his eyebrows. “You wanna play army?”

“I think Marines are technically part of the Navy, babe.”

Adam expelled a breath. “Being a know-it-all is not one of your better qualities, Williams.”

Dirk stared at him for a long moment and then said. “You cut your hair because you’re trying to make your dad think you’re something you’re not. You’re fussing over your clothes because it’s the one thing in the upcoming situation you can control. And you’re fussing at me because you know I’ll still love you even after you piss me off.”

Adam zipped his suitcase up and lifted it to the floor. “You’ve been insufferable ever since you played that psychiatrist in Mindless Love.”

Dirk grinned. “I rocked that role.”

“Yeah. Well…” Adam rolled his suitcase toward Dirk. “Playing a psychiatrist in a movie doesn’t make you one.”

Dirk tucked his fingers into the waistline of Adam’s jeans and tugged him close. “And playing an asshole in real life doesn’t make you one.” Dirk frowned. “Though at the moment you’re really convincing in the role.”

Chapter One
Lauren Cahill opened her eyes and tried to focus on her surroundings. For a moment she couldn’t remember where she was. Then, as the simple flowered wallpaper and white furniture became clear, she remembered. Rory Flanagan. A case of measles that mysteriously wouldn’t respond to any medication. Distraught parents.

Children were always the hardest. She worried that she might not be effective. Then she would not only have failed the child but the parents also. But this time, thank all her ancestors, it had worked.
And Maida Flanagan had been most gracious about giving her a room to rest in as she’d requested.
Sometimes the psychic healing only required a light touch. Sometimes, like today, it took everything out of her and she was always explicit when taking a case. So the Flanagans had ushered her to their guest room, Maida crying with gratitude, and left her to nap and refresh.

A knock on the door made her sit up.

“Come in, please.” Lauren finger-combed her hair, trying to make herself as presentable as possible, and smoothed the fabric of her slacks and blouse.

The door opened and Maida came in, juggling a tray with two cups, a teapot and a plate of cookies.
“I figured you could use a little refreshment.”

“Oh! How nice. Thank you so much.” She swung her legs over the side of the bed. “How’s Rory?”

Tears welled in Maida’s eyes again. “He’s sitting up in bed playing with one of his trucks. Miss Cahill, I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to thank you enough for this.”

“Please call me Lauren. And his recovery is all the thanks I need.”

Maida covered her surge of emotion by setting the tray on the nightstand, fixing their tea and passing the cookies to Lauren.

“Brian insists he wants to give you a check. Just a token of our gratitude,” she added hastily. “I know you said—”

Lauren held up her hand. “No. Please. I never take money for this. It’s a gift I inherited from my mother and grandmother and I don’t think it would be proper to charge people.”
“But—”
“No. Really. I make a very good living designing and maintaining websites. When someone needs me, I share my gift with them as something from the heart. So thank your husband very much.
Perhaps you have a favorite charity you contribute to. That would be the best thing to do.”

“Then you should get some recognition,” Maida insisted. “You performed a miracle.”

“Not quite. But I will insist that there be no publicity about this. Please. It’s my only stipulation. The media creates such a circus about it and the real healing art is lost in the hoopla. Besides, I don’t need that kind of publicity and neither does my family.”

Especially my family.

She also didn’t want to mention that any time anything appeared in the media about her, a stalker she’d somehow picked up made threatening phone calls to her and sent vile letters. She’d talked to the police about it but whoever it was only called from throwaway cell phones and was smart enough to use latex gloves on the letters he sent. He even used adhesive-backed stamps so there was no way to get DNA from saliva.

Her computer technician father loved both Lauren and her mother but he didn’t understand psychic healing. He hadn’t accepted it with her mother and he refused to accept it with his daughter. He had, in fact, insisted they not ever draw attention to it. The few times word had gotten out when she was younger, he’d whisked them away to a secluded location until the furor died down. And he continued to plead with them not to do this.

But Lauren was determined to use her gift, just as her grandmother had. Before she passed away, Nonnie had spent time with her helping her refine and understand the special talent she’d been given. She worked very hard to keep it low key, not just for her family but also for herself.

“You can count on it, then,” Maida was saying now. “It’s the least we can do.”

“Thank you.” Lauren set her cup back on the tray. “I’d better be going.” She smiled. “My paying job calls.”

“Are you all right to drive? Have you rested enough?”

“Oh, yes. Trust me. If I weren’t, I wouldn’t be foolish enough to try it. The rest was great and the tea and cookies were just the right touch.”

At the front door, Maida hugged her, then Brian Flanagan took his turn, first shaking her hand then pulling her into an emotional embrace. And finally Brian’s sister, Mari, who had come to the house to pray with her brother and sister-in-law, hugged her, also.

“We’ll never be able to thank you enough,” she said.

“As I told your sister-in-law, a healthy little boy is thanks enough.”

She finally managed to extricate herself from the three of them and head toward home. It was with a sigh of relief that she pulled into the garage attached to her Craftsman bungalow, tossed her keys and purse on the hall table and went to pour herself a cold drink.

She wanted to call her mother and give her a report, then put up her feet and take some down time before attacking her design schedule. She really was grateful for her business. Her left-brained father had taught her most of her basic skills and computer design school had given her the rest. Her own website had come first, of course, and people just seemed to find her after that. As her client base grew, she found a lot of people coming to her through recommendations, more than enough to earn her a good living. And it somehow satisfied her father that she wasn’t just spending her life on what he called something illogical.

She opened up a spreadsheet on her computer where she always entered the people she was called upon to heal. Under Rory Flanagan’s name she entered the date and the results of the session. She checked the time. Four o’clock. Plenty of time to finish the other things she needed to get done today. Tonight she would relax with the book she was reading.

* * * * *

The telephone woke her in the morning, the harsh jangle reaching into her deep sleep and pulling her into the bright morning. She hadn’t closed the curtains last night, so blinding sunlight streamed in through the windows. Rubbing her eyes, she picked up the phone and tried to answer coherently.

“Hello?”

“Miss Cahill—Lauren—I am so sorry, I don’t know where to begin.” Brian Flanagan’s voice, urgent and upset.

“About what?” She scrubbed a hand over her face, trying to wipe away the vestiges of sleep. “Is it Rory? Has something happened?”

Oh, lord. Please not that.

“No, no. He’s fine. Better than fine. And for that, we are so grateful.” Brian paused. “It’s about the television.”

“Television?” Her hand clutched the receiver. “What television?”

At that moment, she realized faint crowd noises were filtering in through her windows. Carrying the cordless phone, she made her way to the front of the house and peered through the small glass inset in the door. It was a crowd all right. The circus was back in town. Her stomach clenched and her hand tightened on the phone.

Three news vans were parked in front of her house, satellite dishes poking up from the roof of each one. Cameramen with hefty vidcams on their shoulders were jockeying for angles while reporters with wireless mics were staring at the house as if she might suddenly materialize in their midst. Other reporters, male and female, were gathered on her lawn, poised to pounce the minute she showed herself. A long row of cars and vans was strung out up and down the street.

She had barely registered the size of the crowd when her doorbell rang insistently, startling her so she almost dropped the phone.

“Mr. Flanagan, what’s going on?” She was now more angry than confused. “The one thing I explicitly requested was no publicity over this.”

“I know, I know.” He sounded as harried as she felt. “It was my sister, see. She, uh, she just—”
“Just what?” Lauren demanded.
“I didn’t realize she was dating a television news reporter, and she was so excited about Rory and he knew our son was sick. So when he asked about him…”

Lauren swallowed back the rising bile. Would they never leave her alone? She wanted to dive back into bed with the covers over her head and not come out until next week. “Let me guess. She didn’t realize what would happen if she told him.”

“I’m just so sorry about this. My wife is really distraught about it and so is my sister. After what you did for Rory, the last thing she wants is to cause you any problems. Please tell me what I can do to make this right. You healed our son. It’s not right you should have to suffer for it.”

“I appreciate your concern.” She took a deep breath to tamp down her anger and find some measure of control. People just didn’t realize the consequences of their actions. And of course if television had it, the newspapers would be next. And it wouldn’t be just local. It never was. “Just—I’ll take care of things.”

“I-I’m taking my wife and Rory away until this dies down. If you’d like to come with us, we’d be happy to have you.”

Hide out with a frightened family? Not her cup of tea. She had her own fears to deal with.
“That’s very generous of you but like I said, I’ll take care of things.” She spoke with a lot more confidence than she felt. “You just take care of your family.”

Her first reaction was to lock herself in her room as she’d done the first few times, shutting out the world and praying it would go away. But that didn’t get rid of them.

She thought of the people hounding her as wolves fighting over raw meat, each one more vicious than the next. They gave her no peace or privacy, making her a virtual prisoner in her home. The only good thing was she now had a resource that helped a little.

Retreating to her bedroom, she replaced the receiver, but the phone began ringing again the moment she did, its tone a counterpoint to the continued harsh jangle of the doorbell. Her new cell phone with an unlisted number lay on her nightstand. Picking it up, she dialed a number she knew by heart. The first time she’d called the local precinct, the sergeant on duty, Frank Hurley, had been skeptical and somewhat disdainful, almost as if he felt someone “like her” deserved the notoriety. But eventually he had taken her seriously and stopped writing her off as some whack job. After so many incidents they had even developed a weird sort of friendship.

Lauren was weak with relief when she heard his voice. At least she wouldn’t have to explain the situation to someone new.

“Those idiots bothering you again, Lauren?” he asked. His voice was sympathetic but she could also hear anger in it on her behalf.

“Yes they are. They’re all over my street as usual, annoying the neighbors and they won’t stop ringing my doorbell.” She swallowed. “Sergeant, they’re on my lawn and I think they’re even taking pictures of the house.”

“We’ll be there in ten,” he assured her. “Lights and sirens all the way. You just stay inside the house. And don’t answer the phone.”

“Believe me, I won’t,” she assured him and disconnected the call.

She figured her mother would be calling any minute now, followed by her father and then Geoff, her brother. But they knew when the madness exploded to call her on her cell.

Whoever was ringing the doorbell was being persistent and someone was also knocking loudly.
Lauren wanted to shut the bedroom door and put her hands over her ears. Instead, she forced herself to take some deep calming breaths and pulled out a t-shirt and jeans to put on. She had no intention of greeting the police in her pajamas.

She had just pulled her thick brown hair into a quick ponytail when her cell rang. She glanced at the readout. Her father. Of course. That meant he’d seen the early news, probably on the channel Mari’s boyfriend worked for. She let the call go to voice mail, planning to call back after the police arrived and the crowd of vultures was gone.

Her landline had been blessedly silent for a few minutes but as soon as she stepped into the kitchen to make some coffee it started to ring again. She lifted the receiver, disconnected the call, and then left the receiver lying on the counter. Her nerves couldn’t take any more noise.

Why, why, why? Why did they have to make such a big deal about what she did? Surely, with everything going on in the world today, there was enough to write about without focusing on her and making her life miserable. Yet somehow, since the first time an episode had been leaked, she’d been high on the media radar. She was glad that when she’d started her graphic design business she’d decided to use a pseudonym. She could just imagine the reaction of her clients if and when they saw all this craziness in the newspapers and on television. Not to mention the lurid tabloids.

As Sergeant Hurley had promised, less than ten minutes had passed when she heard the wail of sirens coming closer and closer. When the sound was directly in front of her house, she headed for the living room and peeked out through the drapes. Sure enough, there were three cruisers, lights flashing, parked in the streets, and uniformed cops moving the crowd away. And none too politely, she was happy to see.

Eventually, when all the vehicles and the people were gone she saw one of the uniformed men climb the steps to her porch and knock on her door.

“Miss Cahill? It’s Officer McLean. Sergeant Hurley asked me to speak to you personally. It’s safe for you to open the door to me.”

Double-checking to make sure everyone was gone, she unlocked the door to let him in.

“Thanks for taking care of this,” she said, digging up a smile. “I appreciate it.”

“The sergeant said for us to be sure and keep an eye out,” he assured her. “These reporters are nothing but bone-pickers.”

What an apt description.

Lauren shivered. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.”

“Is there someplace you can go, away from here?” he asked. “Until this latest business dies down? They’re gone today but they might very well come back. The sergeant isn’t so sure it will be safe for you here.”

Lauren tamped down the sudden rise of anger. “Tell the sergeant I appreciate his concern and his help, but I won’t let them chase me out of my own house.”

McLean shrugged. “He said you’d say that. Okay, just keep your doors locked and call us if these assholes show up again. We’ll be doing a drive-by every hour or so for a while.”

“Thank you again. Really.”

She locked the door after him, waited until all the patrol cars had left, then went to get her cell phone. Time to call her parents back.

SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN by Stacey Kennedy

SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN by Stacey Kennedy

As she begins to lose all hope, fate steps in to offer her aid, but she’s well aware things will never be the same again. Soon, though, Darby begins to realize that might not be such a bad thing...

~Excerpt~

U.S. Marshal Wyatt sprinted up the front porch, hearing the wood crack and groan under his weight. At the front door, he raised his foot and kicked it open with a crash. Holding his weapon at shoulder height, he placed the flashlight underneath to offer light in the dark space and entered cautiously.

“Spread out,” he ordered.

His team dispersed, each taking a room to search. Wyatt strode forward and kept his gun in his line of vision. He scoped out the living room; if he could even call it such. Old furniture situated around the room sat covered in dust—so much in fact, it itched his nose.

“Clear,” Taryn called from the kitchen.

He glanced around, looking behind the couch first then searched everyplace someone might hide. He found nothing. “Clear,” he replied. Each of the deputies issued the same response from upstairs to confirm the house lay empty.

Lowering his gun, he sighed. He’d hoped the lead Madame Eve gave would have brought them to Marcus. Apparently, she’d been wrong, and that not only confused, but irritated him. His hopes had risen only to plummet again.

He spun around to approach Taryn in the kitchen, and a light caught his eye. If he’d come in the daytime he never would’ve seen it, but being pitch black in the room, the light glowed through the dark space. A small hole, maybe the size of a pea, sat at the bottom of the far wall.

Wyatt raised his gun and approached. “I’ve got something here.” At the wall, he squatted and ran his finger over the light. He looked to Taryn when she stepped in next to him. “There’s something behind here.”

He stood, raised his leg, and after a few well-placed kicks, his foot went through the wall. He peered through the hole to see a set of stairs, and a wall lined with soundproofing. Turning his gun around, he used the butt end to bash in the wall.

The loud cracking of wood filled his ears, but the second he stopped, something else registered in the air—a loud scream for help. He jerked his head toward Taryn. “Did you hear that?”

“I heard it.” She pushed on his back. “Go.”

Kat insisted on driving Mari to the airport, to the private terminal where the Wright International aircraft were kept. A sleek-looking Gulfstream G-5 stood on the tarmac waiting for its passengers to board while the pilot did his preflight check and took care of other last-minute business. Eli and Sydney Wright and their teenage daughter, Lissa, were already inside the small terminal building and greeted Mari warmly.

Kat had seen pictures of them and always commented on what an extremely good-looking family they were—the tall, muscular man with the wavy black hair and a dimple in his chin, the slim redhead looking up at him with affection and a younger female version with the same lustrous hair and slender build. She bet they looked good in magazine shots and newspaper publicity.

“I’m so glad you’re coming with us.” Sydney enveloped Mari in a quick hug. “I told the slave driver we need some girl time while we’re there.”

“Mom’s right,” Lissa added. “And where you guys go, so do I.”

Kat hung back a little, pleased to see how the Wrights treated Mari as a person, not just an employee. It was obvious they considered her almost a part of the family. At forty-two Eli was a self-made billionaire who conducted business in every corner of the world. It would be so easy for him to be arrogant and superficial, for Sydney to be a bitch and for Lissa to be a spoiled brat. But as Mari had told her many times, the man was well-grounded in good values and worked to keep his family the same way.

Now Mari reached out an arm and pulled Kat into the circle.

“I don’t think you’ve met my sister, Katherine. Kat, these are the Wrights. The best boss and the best family in the world.”

Eli’s handshake was strong and warm, Sydney and Lissa hugging her in what was obviously a natural gesture for them.

“It’s nice meeting you,” she smiled at them. “Mari can’t stop raving about either her job or the Wright family. It’s nice to see her in such a good position.”

“Your sister’s a real treasure,” Eli said. “This trip is a semi-reward for all her hard work.” He studied Kat. “Mari hasn’t said much about what you do. Are you in an office situation too?”

“Oh,” Mari broke in, “Kat is—”

“A consultant.” Kat cut her off smoothly. “I consult on various special projects.”

“Oh?” Eli raised an eyebrow. “What type? I’m always looking for consultants.”

“Maybe we can talk next time I’m in town,” she said smoothly. “Isn’t that your pilot beckoning to you?”

He glanced out the window. “Sure is. Well, nice meeting you, Katherine. Ladies? Our chariot awaits.”

Kat followed them outside, waiting while they boarded the plane and watching the smooth taxi and takeoff. Even though she knew they couldn’t see her any longer, she continued to wave until the plane was just a speck in the sky.

“Well,” a deep male voice said behind her. “This is probably the last place I expected to run into you.”

Kat turned and came face-to-face with Mike D’Antoni, her stomach doing a flip-flop at the sight of the tall, dark aviator with the bedroom eyes. For a long moment, shock paralyzed her.

At first Mike thought he was seeing things. Surely there were dozens of petite, blondes with sun-streaked hair in the world. Who also had the same habit of tilting their head to one side. It couldn’t be her, right here in the private hangar section of the airport. What would she be doing here anyway? He stared through the glass of the door, his brain bouncing in his head.

Then she turned around and every nerve and muscle in his body froze.

If anything, Katherine Culhane was sexier, more appealing, than the last time he’d seen her two years ago. Of course the last time he’d seen her she’d been a raging maniac, throwing everything she could get her hands on at him and screaming curse words that would make a sailor blush. The fact that she’d been absolutely right to react the way she did hadn’t made the episode any easier to take.

Back then the Phoenix Agency had been just the four of them—Dan Romeo whose idea it was, Troy Arsenault, Rick Latrobe and himself. They hadn’t even had an office, just a phone number with an answering machine. They flew low under the radar, taking missions that no one else would touch and excelling at it. Phoenix was a high-risk international security company, for all intents and purposes. They didn’t advertise. They had no website. Contracts were by referral only.

Then Rick’s little brother Joey had been shot in a blown mission assignment, Joey’s team leader Mark Halloran had been captured by a terrorist group and Faith Wilding, now wed to Mark, was at her wits’ end trying to find someone to rescue him.

The rescue mission was exactly the kind of thing Phoenix was originally created for—an assignment that politics blocked government agencies from attempting. He’d been with Kat the night he’d gotten the call to plan the mission. He’d been unable to give her an explanation, just…left. After the harrowing rescue in Peru something else had come up, then something else again.

He’d made one stupid attempt to see her, giving no thought to what her reaction might be, and didn’t realize until she’d shut the door on him what a mess he’d made of things. How important she really was to him.

Now, two years later, Phoenix had offices, a woman who juggled everything without a drop of sweat, an international reputation and more contracts than they could handle.

But three of the partners were also now married, a signal that as they’d expanded the agency and taken on more agents, each of them could find a way to have a private life. Maybe it was time for him to think of the same thing. The thought didn’t scare him the way it used to. His problem would be convincing the woman he was sure was the one that he was different, that he could be trusted.

He still got the same punch to the gut when he looked at Kat. The breeze lifted the strands of hair, fanning them around her face. He knew the green of her short sleeve sweater would match exactly the color of her eyes and when she smiled—if she smiled—her entire face would light up. Black slacks clung to rounded hips that his hands still itched to touch, the memory of her silken skin still imprinted on his brain.

For a moment he was tempted to walk through the other door, climb into the SUV waiting for him and forget he’d even see her. Not a day had passed since the last time he’d seen her that he hadn’t wished he could take everything back. That he’d made the time to see her between assignments, explain to her as best he could. Dan and Mark had both managed to handle it and now so had Rick. But he’d been scared of commitment. He’d run from what she represented—giving up his footloose life for one woman—so he’d done what he had to. Stayed away from her.

And cursed himself every day for what he’d thrown away.

He’d probably be smart to get the hell away from her now but his feet seemed to have a mind of their own as they carried him to the runway-side door and his hands automatically pushed it open. And then he was talking to her, the last thing he’d ever expected to do again.

From her reaction, she hadn’t planned on it either. Her face paled under its Florida tan, her eyes widened and although her mouth moved, no words came out.

“Yeah,” he managed. “Shocked me too. How are you, Kat?”

She swallowed twice and finally managed a response. “I’m fine.” Her voice, though trembling slightly, could have chipped ice. “I trust you’re the same?”

“Taking a plane somewhere?”

“Just seeing off my sister, her boss and his family.”

“Oh.”

Silence.

“She lives here in San Antonio and works for Eli Wright.”

That was interesting. “CEO of Wright International?”

Kat nodded. “Executive secretary. He’s taking her with his family on a combined business-vacation trip to Hawaii.”

“Very nice. So…you were visiting her?”

“Yes. So what are you doing here?”

“Business meeting with two of my partners. I just got in.”

More silence. Then they both spoke at the same time.

“Listen, Kat—”

“Mike, I’m not—”

He smiled. “Ladies first.”

“No, you go ahead.” Now her eyes were flashing. She’d gotten her equilibrium back, hidden behind an invisible wall. “I’d really be interested in what you have to say.”

He studied her carefully, seeing the same fiery woman who nearly set him ablaze in bed. A woman he’d treated very, very badly. A woman he still wanted more than his next breath.

Three glasses of wine later the sun had dipped below the horizon and evening shadows were streaking the trees when a cough woke her from the light doze she’d fallen into. She jerked upright, wine sloshing onto her hand, and turned her head.

Her eyes widened.

Gabe Carter stood at the gate to the yard wearing jeans, a clean chambray shirt and a hopeful expression on his face. In his hands he held a bouquet of seasonal flowers, a large box of chocolates and a six-pack of wine coolers. She burst out laughing. She couldn’t help herself. It was an exact reproduction of his arrival for their first real date. Her initial reaction was to tell him what he could do with his peace offerings but he looked so mouthwateringly good she thought twice about cutting off her nose to spite her face.

“I think I need to apologize for my earlier bad behavior.” His mouth turned up in a tentative grin. “Is it safe to come in?”

“At least for the moment.” She rose from the lounge chair and went to unlatch the gate, almost afraid to be near him again. “I’ll take the peace offerings, anyway.”

He followed her into the yard, setting the wine coolers and candy on the low table next to the lounge and handing her the flowers.

“They smell wonderful.” She looked up at him, her voice slightly unsteady. “Let me just put them in water and get another wineglass. Have a seat.”

“Jill?” There was no teasing humor on his face now.

“Yes?” She raised en eyebrow, watching him.

“I’m sorry. About ten years ago. About today. About a lot of things.”

Sorry. She was sorry too. For a lot of things. And underneath it all she didn’t want him to leave. The problem was, she didn’t know exactly what she did want.

Her hands shook as she found a vase, filled it with water and arranged the flowers. Gabe was here. He was here in her backyard. What did he want of her? After the blowup in his office she dreaded seeing him again. She was glad she’d had the wine to relax but she had to make sure she didn’t let her guard down. One wine cooler and she’d send him on his way.

Yeah, right.

Yes, right. Be smart.

“I thought I’d bring these out here until later. I can’t look at them if they’re in the house.”

Gabe rose to take the vase from her and their fingers connected lightly. They stared at each other, shocked by the intensity that ghost of a touch generated. Very carefully he lowered the vase to the table, his eyes never leaving hers, then he pulled her against his body.

Jill felt every inch of him, from his broad shoulders to his firm belly to his strong thighs to the bulge of his cock pressing against the fabric of his jeans. He bent his head toward her, waiting a fraction of a second to see if she objected before his mouth captured hers.

His lips were warm and firm, like rough silk brushing against hers and his teeth nibbled gently. When his tongue pressed against the seam of her lips she opened for him and he swept inside like a marauder, touching every inch of wet flesh. His hands gripped her shoulders, holding her tight against him while he devoured her mouth.

One hand slid from her shoulder to cup a breast through the thin material of her tee shirt, the nipple resting in his warm palm. She felt it harden and strain against the fabric as if seeking a permanent home in his hand. When he squeezed it gently she moaned softly into his mouth, His other hand slid down her back and reached to palm her buttocks, kneading the flesh with his long fingers.

God, how she remembered that touch. Her body had craved it now as much as it had then. She pressed herself harder against him and his hand snaked upward and into the waistband of her shorts. The feel of his hot erection pressed into her and she rubbed her mound against his cock, wishing the jeans would disappear.

Gabe lifted his head an inch, still so close his breath dusted her face. His eyes had a hungry look. “Jill, either tell me to stop or we’re taking this into the house. No way am I going to do what I have in mind out here on the lawn so the neighbors can have a show.”

Tell him to stop. Now.

“I-Inside,” she whispered.

He nodded and picked her up in his arms, carrying her into the house as he had done so many times that long-ago summer. The way to her bedroom wasn’t something he’d forgotten. He snapped on the lamp and stood her beside the bed like an expensive piece of statuary, then very slowly undressed her.

She shivered in anticipation as he removed each item of clothing, the gentle movement of air drifting in from the open window raising gooseflesh on her exposed skin. He touched every inch of her—her shoulders, her breasts, her nipples, the indentation of her waist. His fingertip skimmed her navel then followed a line to her pubic hair, his fingers combing through it. With a gentle stroke he followed the line of her cunt, separating her thighs to give him easy movement.

How many nights during that summer had they spent in this room while her folks traipsed around the country in their RV or were off on golf weekends? They’d explored each other’s bodies, learning the many ways to give each other pleasure? She wanted to be angry with him, to tell him of the misery she’d suffered, to make the blame all his. But he’d come calling tonight with flowers and chocolates and a kiss that seared her down to her toes. And the years were gone as if they’d never happened. At least for this one moment in time.

Julie trudged across the parking lot into the floral shop at Tilling Garden and Plants. She ran her fingers through the thick strands of hair she’d meticulously straightened that morning. There was nothing left of the salon-sleek hairstyle save for a rusty mass of frizz. What a pain in the ass.

“I’m here,” she called out in unison with the bells jingling over the door. The scent of eucalyptus and jasmine filled her nose and she breathed deep, letting the calming aroma fill her.

“I’m out back.”

“No shit, Sherlock,” Julie mumbled, winding her way through the displays of silk flowers and potted plants, past the empty front counter to the back work room.

“That’s a pretty outfit, Jules. Not everyone can wear grey. But it’s definitely a good color for you.” Her sister Meghan barely turned away from the assortment of roses scattered on her workbench.

Julie wasn’t sure that was a compliment, but she knew her younger sibling had intended it that way, so she took no offense. “Thanks.”

Younger by a year, Meghan looked radiant as always. Nothing ever looked good on Julie. Her sister’s chestnut curls were pulled back in an elaborate French twist with tiny wisps framing her pixie features. Meghan didn’t need to wear the makeup accenting her almond eyes and high cheekbones. Her flawless skin would have been beautiful without the subtle strokes of color. Unlike Julie who attempted to cover the smattering of freckles across her nose and thicken the sparse eyelashes she’d been blessed with.

“So what’s up with the frantic phone call, Meg?” Julie asked, leaning in to give her sister a gentle squeeze and a kiss on the cheek. “Nice bridal bouquet. Hard to believe you’ll be carrying your own soon.”

“I know. How cool is that? Just like Mum and Daddy.” Meghan held out her left hand. The three-quarter-carat marquis diamond caught the afternoon light shafting through the window and sent it dancing on the walls.

Julie tamped down the quick spike of envy. The fact that her sisters seemed to have all the luck in the love department while she continued to strike out certainly wasn’t their fault.

“Anyway, the phone call.” Meghan giggled, shrugging her shoulders. “I just can’t figure out the new filing system you set up in the office. I need the bill for the Harriman wedding tomorrow and Chelsea’s paycheck, but I couldn’t remember the combination to the safe. Then I had these invoices from the flower delivery. Those I just threw on top of the desk, along with the mail for the last couple of days.”

At least she had the grace to blush at her own shortcomings.

“It’s Friday, Jules. Peter and I have a date,” Meghan continued. “I knew you wouldn’t be busy. Could you be a peach and dig it all out for me? You’re so much better at all the organizational stuff.”

Exasperated, Julie bit her cheek to hold in a sigh. “Meg, the combination is the month and day of our parents’ anniversary. Simple. Four numbers.” Since Meghan wasn’t really listening to the details, Julie walked into the little office off the back room as she talked. “The invoices go in the basket on top of the desk marked ‘in’. And you could have sorted the mail to separate the junk from the bills,” Julie muttered the last observation. Two days’ worth of sale flyers and bills littered the otherwise immaculate desk.

“What?” Meghan hollered from the workbench.

“Never mind, I’ll do it. Like always,” Julie said to no one.

“Hello, anyone here?”

The backdoor slammed. Another two steps and her baby sister, Deirdre, would have seen Meghan. Julie rubbed at the annoyance pounding behind her temples.

“Jules is in the office,” Meghan replied.

Tilling Gardens and Plants had been the brainchild of her sisters. Open five years, her younger siblings had floundered financially for the first two. When Julie received her MBA with honors from Northeastern University in Boston, she’d had plans too big to fit into the rural town of Delmont. But her sisters’ not-so-subtle hints at bankruptcy had piled onto her already high level of guilt at leaving home. Add the weight of aging parents with declining health and it had become a burden she couldn’t ignore.

Returning to Delmont as their partner and business manager had ensured Julie would be close should her parents need her. Of course it didn’t hurt that the floral and landscaping business had flourished under her business guidance and was now supporting the three of them quite nicely. Still, the strains of her family obligations often stretched her patience to the point of breaking—like now.

Chapter One

One week later

I stood in the back of the Baker Amphitheater, leaning against the brick half-wall that separated the seats under the roof from those on the lawn, wondering for the hundredth time what the hell I was doing here. It wasn’t that I’d never been to a concert before. I’d been to plenty, running security detail for high-profile musicians. But I’d never been to a Dallas Creed concert. A deliberate choice, one I’d stuck to until tonight. Morgan Creed, Dallas’ brother, had given me a ticket to the performance with a seat right down front, but I didn’t want to be that close to the man yet. Or give him a chance to see me.

When Dallas Creed and I destroyed our relationship twenty years ago, I stumbled away from it with my heart bleeding and swore never to lay eyes on him again. I had loved him with an intensity that consumed me and I’d been so sure he felt the same way. Then he dropped his bombshell, leaving me emotionally wiped out, with a bitter outlook on love and a determination never to be hurt again.

All these years I’d managed to hide behind an invisible wall, refusing to buy any Dallas Creed albums, as if by ignoring his music I could ignore the man. But his songs were played everywhere and television covered him like green on grass, so avoiding him completely had been next to impossible. It bothered me after a while to discover I actually liked listening to him. Despite that, I was definitely finished with the man. Over and done. Finis.

When he’d had his disastrous accident I hadn’t even called to find out how he was, afraid to open old wounds and let my heart bleed all over the place again. The man was just plain poison to me. Or maybe we’d poisoned each other. I didn’t know anymore; only knew that I’d survived by keeping my distance all these years. We’d been too obsessed with our own careers to care enough about each other to compromise. The blame was certainly not all his. In that secret place that I’d deliberately hidden away, I knew that. I was equally as guilty as him. It just made it easier for me to lay everything at his door.

Yet here I stood, waiting for the show to begin. I wondered not for the first time what had driven him to the excess of drugs and booze that led to the accident, and why he was so determined to put himself through the agony of the climb back to the top.

Stop!

I mentally shook myself. I didn’t want to know and didn’t care. Silently I repeated it over and over to myself, much as I had to Morgan Creed when he’d appeared in my office two days ago…

Just seeing him, with his close resemblance to his brother, was a kick in the stomach. Same dark blond hair, same smoky gray eyes, same lean build and loose-hipped walk. The smile was a little tighter, the eyes not quite as intense, but add a couple of years and it could have been Dallas standing in front of me.

Thank god it wasn’t. I used every bit of my willpower not to affect an air of disdain.

“Whatever you’re selling, I’m not interested.”

“You’ve done very well for yourself,” he commented, ignoring me and looking around at my surroundings. “I’m impressed. There aren’t too many women who’ve reached this level in your business.”

He was right about that. Roper Protective Services was my baby, probably the only one I’d ever have, and it had grown and prospered. My love life might suck but otherwise, I was great. In the central computer system was a file that gave the location and assignment of every agent at all times. Just outside the office door my secretary worked steadily, updating the current files. Down the hall, any operatives who weren’t already on the road were planning for their next assignments and tying up loose ends from the last one.

Yes, I’d done well. I’d gotten the success I’d obsessively believed was so important. But had I paid too high a price? That was something I chose not to think about.

“You have a great reputation in the industry,” Morgan went on. “You’re known for providing the best security for iconic figures.”

“Iconic?” I couldn’t keep the sarcasm from my voice. “Exactly what does that mean?”

“You know damn well what it means, Charley. And you know you’re the best.”

“Thanks, but I don’t think you came here to pay me a compliment.” I fiddled with a pen on my desk, needing something to do with my hands. “I was shocked when I saw your name on the appointment schedule.”

And that wasn’t the only reaction I’d had. When I’d seen Morgan’s name on the calendar it had reminded me of Dallas, a sharp sensation like a punch to the gut. It invaded my body, stirring up memories and emotions I’d worked so long to keep under lock and key.

“You could have called me and cancelled,” he pointed out.

Which I probably should have. “The message said it was important.”

He smiled, the same little boy smile Dallas had, the one the Creed brothers apparently never lost. My stomach knotted and my mouth went dry. No, no, no. Not after all this time. Would I never recover from my shattered heart? By sheer effort of will I managed to block Dallas’ face from my mind.

“And you were curious about what I wanted.”

I kept my face impassive. “Mildly.”

“But not about Dallas,” he added softly.

Yes! No! Go away, Morgan.

“My personal interest in Dallas Creed has long since disappeared. I don’t want to know anything about him.” I dropped the pen and picked up my coffee mug. Anything to keep Morgan from seeing just how much discussing Dallas unsettled me. “I have to say, though, he’s certainly had a long ride.”

Morgan nodded. “The majority of performers like him peak after five years, slide back down to appearing in clubs, then retire before people begin to feel sorry for them.”

“But not Dallas.”

He nodded. “But not Dallas. And I’ll be goddamned if I can figure out why. Maybe because he’s neither pure country nor pure rock. He crosses over, a very important thing in success in the music industry.”

He paused.

“And?” I prompted.

“And…he’s just got something…indefinable that takes him to the top and keeps him there. Not once but twice. Charley, he’s bigger this time than he ever was.”

I shrugged and sat up straighter. Why was I even listening to this? It killed me to realize that after twenty years, my emotions could still be so raw that just discussing Dallas made them bleed around the edges.

“Not my business. I’m just interested in why you might need my services. I thought all promoters had security.”

“That’s basically to keep people from rushing the stage and weird things like that.” I couldn’t mistake the tension in his voice. “Or keep a lid on the groupies.”

I made a rude noise. “That must not go over very big. Keeping the groupies away.”

The look Morgan shot me was hard but he didn’t comment. Instead he walked to the big window and stood there, hands in his pockets. When he finally spoke again, I had to work hard to conceal my shock at what he said. The very last thing I’d expected him to tell me was that someone was trying to kill Dallas. That there had already been three attempts and he was getting threatening notes as well.

“Kill Dallas?” I still couldn’t wrap my mind around it. “Are you serious?”

“As a heart attack.”

“But who would want to kill him? He’s just a…”

“Singer? Performer?” He turned to look at me. “When you reach that level of fame there’s always someone out there making you a target. Failed wannabes. Discarded groupies. Someone with an imagined slight.”

“Why not just report it to the police?” I asked.

“Because I have no one to point the finger at. No place for them to dig. And it would just throw the tour into chaos.”

“Oh yes.” I couldn’t keep the tinge of bitterness from my voice. “Let’s be sure nothing happens to the tour.”

Excerpt:

Vic took off his coat, tossed it on the bed in his assigned bedroom then loosened his collar, removed his tie and contemptuously flung it onto the dresser. He slipped off his shoulder holster, hung it on the back of the chair at the desk and checked the safety on the Smith & Wesson .45. He took out the bottle of Passport scotch he’d brought with him, pouring some into a glass, followed by two ice cubes from the bucket.

He eased himself into the padded club chair at the small cocktail table, stretched his legs in front of him and exhaled a deep breath. He had returned to the suite at nine after grabbing dinner at John Q’s Steakhouse across the street, followed by a long walk around Playhouse Square to view the city after dark. He hadn’t seen Kimberly or Pasta when he returned, but heard the sound of her voice behind the closed door of the master bedroom. He had performed another cursory check of the suite before retiring to his quarters to unwind. A day of mingling with the fast and beautiful set left him wishing the job was over so he could return to his comfort zone.

He became aware of a presence and looked at the open doorway. Kimberly stood there, dressed in a pink velour jogging suit with her initials embroidered in red sequins on the left breast. She wore no shoes or socks. Her hair carelessly outlined her face, adding a degree of sexiness. Vic noted that the zipper on her top was halfway down, and she wasn’t wearing a bra. She offered a tentative smile that still retained a hint of shyness.

“Do you always drink alone or would you mind some company?” she asked in a soft, husky voice.

Vic set another glass on the table and pushed the bottle toward her. She settled into the chair across from him, poured some Scotch into her glass and added ice. She took a long swallow then set the glass on the table.

“Won’t Pasta object to you drinking with the hired help?” Vic asked.

“Right about now, Pasta’s cruising the bars, looking for a cock to wrap his lips around. Won’t see him until morning.”

Vic laughed softly. “That answers one question I had.”

Kimberly gave him a look of surprise. “You thought Pasta and I were…?”

“Uh-huh.”

She laughed at the notion. “I wouldn’t pass the physical, but you’d better be careful.”

“I’ll sleep with my gun under my pillow.”

Kimberly took another sip and looked at Vic with a sultry glow. “You’re not what I expected. When Evan said he retained an ex-cop to look after me I thought you’d be older, with a pot belly and no hair.”

“Sorry to disappoint you.”

“I’m not disappointed.” She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, held it for a moment then slowly exhaled. “It feels good to be back home.”

Vic sipped his drink then cradled his glass while looking at her, appreciating her beauty. He mentally compared what he now viewed in person to what he’d seen in the press and on the occasional TV show. The cameras didn’t lie. Kimberly Daniels was a beautiful woman. He recalled a sexy lingerie spread she’d done in a men’s magazine the year before and wondered if those photos were accurate as well.

“Are you really the sentimental type or was this trip a publicity stunt?”

Kimberly opened her eyes and laughed softly. “I could tell you weren’t too enthused about accepting this job.”

“Why would you say that?”

“I can read people pretty well.” She laughed again. “But I loved the way you stood your ground with Pasta. He’s not used to people talking back to him.”

“I’ll apologize to him over breakfast. Just what is his function?”

Kimberly downed the last of her drink and poured another. “He’s my personal assistant. I’d be lost without him.” She took a small sip. “So what’s my celebrity ass worth these days, bodyguard-wise?”

Vic eyed her for a moment. “Does it really matter?”

She shrugged. “Guess not, as long as you’re not complaining.”

“If I have any complaints I’ll let you know.” Vic refreshed his drink and changed the subject to something more pleasant. “I used to watch you on a local TV show when you still used your real name. You sang a few of the classic love songs and put me in mind of Sarah Vaughn. I really got hooked on the way you sang It Had to Be You. That’s always been one of my favorites and you nailed it.”

Kimberly smiled warmly at him. “Thank you. I love those songs. I grew up listening to them and memorized all the words.”

“Why not cut an album of standards instead of pop?”

“I wanted to with this new one, but my handlers wouldn’t let me. They all said the same thing. Give the public what they’ve come to expect. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Maybe we’ll do that project next year.” She smirked. “I hate being handled.”

“Why put up with it?”

“It’s part of the game and you have to play by the rules. Don’t you have rules to play by?”

“Only the ones I make up. Why did you change your name when you got out of here?”

“The TV producer in L.A. who discovered me thought Callie Buchovic was too ethnic and suggested I change it to something sexier. Probably afraid people would expect me to play an accordion and sing Who Stole the Kishka?” She tucked a leg under her on the chair and appeared comfortable. “So tell me about yourself.”

“There isn’t much to tell. I used to be a detective with the Sandusky P.D., got shot in the line of duty a few years ago, still have trouble with my leg because of it and I take the occasional job to keep from getting bored. Other than that, I live on the lake in Sandusky, fish, drink too much and generally do whatever the hell pleases me. End of story.”

Kimberly laughed. “I know that isn’t the whole story. Evan told me all about you.”

Vic took a drink. Note to self: go to L.A. and kill the little bastard. “What did I leave out?”

“That you live in one of his vacation homes he uses as a tax write-off, you used to be married but it didn’t work out and you two roomed together in college. Before you got shot saving your partner’s life you were being investigated for beating the shit out of someone you arrested. Evan came to your rescue when they wanted to press charges.”

Addendum to the note: book the flight tomorrow. “Guess we all live in a fishbowl. How did you go from being Callie Buchovic, local singer, to Kimberly Daniels, big time recording star and reputed diva?”

She arched her eyebrows. “Reputed? I’d better talk to my publicist. Let’s see…after I was on that local show you mentioned I got a call from a network scout for the reality show So You Think You Can Sing? I won the national competition and was contacted by a record producer, then I had to get an agent, then an entourage and then my life snowballed into something I lost control of.”

Vic picked up on the indifferent tone in her voice. He was actually relieved to discover that the whole tabloid enfant terrible thing was all hype. “You don’t sound too happy about it.”

She looked into her glass and slowly swirled the contents before answering. “To be honest, there are times when I wish I was still a blue collar girl from Parma, Ohio. Do you ever get to Los Angeles?”

“Not if I can help it.”

“Why not?”

“Too many people moving too fast. I like my life a little more low-key. Hell, this is the first time I’ve been to downtown Cleveland in a couple of years.”

She smiled wistfully. “Sometimes I miss being here. Life was simpler then. Not so many people trying to grab a piece of me.”

Vic looked at her again but in a different light. Beneath the surface this wasn’t some grande dame commanding attention, but an angelfish navigating in a sea of sharks. “I don’t really keep up with these things, but wasn’t there something serious going between you and that actor, Justin Truax?”

Kimberly laughed. “Only in his publicist’s imagination.” She took another drink. “He escorted me to a music awards show and suddenly we were an item. There’s a lesson for you: in Hollywood, be careful who you’re seen having dinner with. The press will have you married off or pregnant by the early edition.” She smiled slyly at Vic. “Were you asking about my availability for a reason?”

“Nothing more than idle curiosity.”

“Sure,” she skeptically replied. She drank the last of her Scotch and poured another slug. “Ever have any regrets in your life?”

“A few.”

“Such as?”

“Not hanging onto the gal who got away, picking the wrong lotto numbers, making the career choice I did. That’s about it.”

After taking another sip, Kimberly set her glass on the table. She looked at Vic with a silly expression on her face, leading him to believe she had probably had a few too many. She reached over, took hold of his hand and turned his palm upward. She looked into his eyes with a sultry gaze and lightly ran her fingertip along his palm.

“Ever regret never having made love to a famous singer?” she asked.

“What makes you think I haven’t?” he countered.

“Touché.” She released his hand, sucked down the last of her drink and suppressed a hiccup. “So tell me something, Vic: why should Pasta have all the fun tonight?”

Vic set his glass on the table and stood up. “Maybe we should discuss this when you’re not so… tired.”

Kimberly gave a wicked chuckle. “Wow, a gentleman. Don’t meet many of those where I live.”

Vic placed his hand on her elbow and gently prompted her to her feet. “Yeah, I get all Sir Galahad when I see a lady in distress. Come on.”

He escorted her to her room down the hall. When they arrived Kimberly abruptly turned, took his face in her hands and kissed him. Vic put his hands on her shoulders out of reflex, enjoying the kiss. He got a whiff of her perfume, but couldn’t place it. Whatever it was, it mixed perfectly with her body chemistry.

Kimberly looked up at him and smiled. “See you in the morning?”

“I’ll be here.”

He walked back to his room. Note to self: lock the door!

Frank should have released her now and made whatever phone calls were necessary to set this all in motion. But one hand still held her hand to his chest; the other pressed against the center of her back. Nothing separated them now except clothing.

“I’m going to kiss you, Zoe.” His voice whispered over her lips.

Oh, no. No. Blood roared in her ears. Her knees trembled. “I…I wish you wouldn’t.” Liar.

“Why?” Both arms locked around her.

God help her, Zoe melted into the embrace. “You…you don’t understand.”

“I understand plenty.”

His erection pulsed into her belly, stoking the fire building there. She tried to tell herself it was a physical reaction to their nearness, nothing more. Tried to tell herself they needed to appear to be a couple in public and, therefore, this innocuous kiss would ease them into the illusion. Tried to throw out a thousand other excuses that all explained why Frank Ludwig held her so wonderfully tight.

But then his mouth covered hers, his tongue slipped past her parted lips, and that fire turned into an inferno. Her body came alive for the first time in years. A little whimper melted her more into him. His hold tightened, the kiss claiming her soul. She wrapped her arms around his neck. One hand clamped over her ass, anchoring her in place, while he rasped his hard-on over her stomach. The other hand wandered to the knot on her robe belt, loosening it as if it were nothing.

Her body quivered when he parted the folds, then jerked with the first touch of his hand to her waist. He deepened the kiss, squeezed her ass, and tickled his fingers up her ribs.

His cell phone startled them both, breaking the seal of their mouths.

Frank’s muttered, “Fuck,” said it all. He stomped to the counter to answer the call.

Zoe clutched her robe closed and ran to her bedroom. Back braced on the door, she sank to the floor. Fingers dived for her aching pussy. It didn’t take much to make her come.

“Zoe?”

She jumped at the sound of his voice on the other side of the door.

“Go away.” Her head buzzed from the orgasm. She half-expected him to barge in, or at least try the doorknob. Disappointment weighed down her heart when she heard his footsteps retreat and the bathroom door close.

Where the hell was her head? People were dead, and all she could think about was coming, about Frank’s body pressing her deep into the mattress, about burrowing so far under the covers with him the world would implode and they’d never realize it.

Lovestruck fool. Horny, lovestruck fool.

Tears fell, fast and furious. Knees clutched to her chest, Zoe rested her cheek on top of them, slowly rocking while she cried. There was movement behind her—the door being pushed open.

“Don’t cry. Please don’t cry.” When had he returned, or had he ever left and she only imagined it? “Let me in, Zoe.”

She knew she shouldn’t, not as vulnerable as she felt, not as much as she wanted him. But she did, scooting far enough away to allow Frank to squeeze in. He folded his big body to the floor beside her, arms wrapping so tight around her the world beyond didn’t exist. Zoe curled into his chest, palms pressed to those rock-hard pecs. His heart beat as fast as hers. She liked that. She liked it a lot...too much...

Chapter One

Nicole Welles drew in a deep breath, inhaling the salt-scented air and listening to the rhythmic lap of ocean waves against the sand. She consciously forced every muscle in her body to relax.

The last two weeks had been a bitch. Financially rewarding but no less than a trip to hell deserved. Nemesis had been contracted by Macmillan Global to retrieve their boss who had been kidnapped by one of the largest drug cartels and held for ransom. Since this particular cartel was known for returning their hostages more dead than alive, Macmillan wanted the boss out right now.

They’d done it. She’d led the team herself. There had been some bloodshed but fortunately not on their side. Now she was trying to decompress in a bungalow at a very private, very exclusive resort on the beach in tiny Costalegre near Puerto Vallarta.

She was thinking about heading back to the villa for a shower and turned over to fish her watch out of her beachbag when a heavy thunk! sounded behind her. Instinctively her brain registered what it was and she rolled off the lounge onto the sand, grabbing for her beachbag where her 9mm was stashed. When she lifted her eyes to see what was happening they were met by a pair of very tanned legs dusted with dark hair.

“I have a gun,” she said, pointing it upward.

“So do I.” The voice was deep and almost gravelly. “Fucking lot of good yours would do you if I planned to kill you. You’d already be toast.”

Keeping a two-handed grip on the gun, she rolled lithely to her knees and then to her feet. Inches away from her stood what she could only think of as a man who was menacingly sexy. And tall. Much taller than she was, which was a trick since she was five ten. Shaggy black hair framed a face defined by deep grooves in the cheeks, a square jaw and startling blue eyes beneath heavy brows and thick lashes.

Dressed in a loose shirt and shorts, every bit of his muscular body she could see was deeply tanned. And the gun he was holding was even bigger than hers. An Israeli Desert Eagle, one she was very familiar with.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

“The man who just saved your life.” His voice was deep and hoarse as if he’d been shouting for a long time. “Who are you?”

“What do you mean, saved my life?”

He looked up and down the private stretch of beach, empty except for the two of them. As far as Nicki knew, only three of the resort’s bungalows were occupied at the moment.

“Put away your gun and I’ll show you.”

Put away the gun? She stared at him for a long moment, something weird sizzling between them, then lowered the 9mm to her side.

“That’s as put away as it’s going to get until I know what’s going on around here.”

“Come on.”

He, too, lowered his gun and closed steel fingers around her wrist, tugging her toward the thick groves of palm and coconut trees bordering the beach. Carefully pulling back a prickly bougainvillea he pointed at a body shoved against the roots of the shrub.

Nicki stared. “Who’s that?”

“Since it’s you he was trying to kill, I thought perhaps that was a question you could answer.” His voice had a faint accent to it, one that Nicki was having trouble placing.

She crouched down to get a better look at the body. Dressed in faded jeans and a dark t-shirt, he had the definite darker skin and features of a Hispanic.

“I’d say Mexican at first glance.” She noted the bullet hole in the back of his head and looked up at the man standing next to her. “Your work?”

He nodded. “I was walking down to the beach and saw him lining up to blow your brains out.”

“Look at him. What’s he doing here?” Nicki peered through the dense foliage that crowded the crushed shell pathways. “This place only has eight bungalows and the owners are very particular who occupies them.”

The man made a sound suspiciously like a grunt. “Tell me about it. And they’ve got enough guards here to protect a third world country.”

She nodded. “People like him can’t just walk onto the grounds and wander around at will.”

“So.”

She stood up, still holding her gun by her side. “Yes, so.” Shifting her gun to her left hand she extended her right one. “Since you saved my life I guess I should introduce myself. Nicole Welles.”

His grip was firm and warm, but Nicki wasn’t prepared for the little currents of electricity that raced through her body when their skin made contact. She schooled herself to retrieve her hand smoothly rather than yank it away, her first reaction.

“Adam Molloy.”

They stared at each other.

“Well, then.” She looked down at the body again. “We need to do something about the trash here.”

“I don’t think we want to take him up to the main building and call the police. Someone sent him. He didn’t conjure this up all by himself. Let’s stash him somewhere and let his bosses wonder what happened to him.”

She looked at him with a speculative gaze. “Interesting solution. Are you someone I should be afraid of?”

He smiled, white even teeth flashing against his dark skin and one dimple winking at the corner of his mouth. “Hey, I’m the guy who saved your life, remember?”

“Yeah, but you could have done that to get close to me.” She took a cautious step backward.

“If I wanted you dead, Miss Welles, you’d already be lying here next to this idiot.”

She realized suddenly that she was wearing the tiniest bikini she’d been able to find and Adam Molloy was letting his eyes take a slow journey over her body. She turned slightly so he couldn’t see the instant puckering of her barely covered nipples. Well, wasn’t this a fine mess. She had no idea who this man really was, who the man was who’d tried to kill her, and her body, all on its own, was thinking about sex.

“Let’s clean the place up.” Molloy’s deep voice cut into her thoughts. He shoved his gun into the waistband of his shorts at the small of his back and lifted the body as if it weighed nothing, hard muscles flexing beneath the tanned skin. “Why don’t you gather your belongings from the beach while I handle this…situation. I’ll be back in a minute.”

He strode away without waiting for an acknowledgment from her.

Nicki stared after his figure as it disappeared onto the trees. What an arrogant ass. And who exactly was Adam Molloy that he was staying in this very private place? Besides a walking sex machine, that is.

Nicole! Snap out of it. Find out what the hell is going on.

She stomped back to where her things still lay next to the lounge she’d been using. Picking up the sarong that matched her bathing suit, she wrapped it around herself and knotted it under one arm. She stowed her gun in her beachbag, drew the drawstring tight and slung it over her shoulder. She was halfway back to her bungalow when tall, dark and mysterious Adam Molloy materialized seemingly out of nowhere.

She stopped in the middle of the path. “Finished already? What did you do, feed him to the fish?”

There was that smile again, making her knees suddenly week and the pulse deep in her womb thump out its rhythm. Holy shit! Nicole Welles never reacted this way. Not to any man. Oh, she was far from a stranger to sex but it was always carefully planned and on her terms. She never allowed herself to react this way.

It must be the situation. It’s not every day someone tries to assassinate me.

“In a matter of speaking. I’ll tell you all the gory details if you buy me a drink.”

“I don’t think I’m much in the mood for the bar. And I’d like to try to find out who that idiot with the gun is. Was.”

He took her arm and urged her along. Her feet moved as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

“Me, neither. But I’ll bet your bungalow has a fully stocked bar. I know mine does.”

She stopped, pulling against his hold. “We’re not going to your bungalow.”

“No. We’re going to yours.” He tugged her forward again. “Don’t you want to figure out who that guy is and how he got here?”

“I don’t think the answers are at my place.”

“Right. That’s where we’re going to talk about this and dig for answers. Come on.”

She found herself at the door to her bungalow, wondering how he even knew which one was hers. Oh, right. With so few people on the grounds he’d probably scoped out all the guests as soon as he checked in. And when exactly had that been?

“Aren’t you going to open the door?” He had just a touch of amusement in his voice. “It’s not polite to keep people standing outside. Not to mention possibly dangerous.”

Nicki pulled out her key card, shoved it into the slot and pushed the handle down. The artificially cooled air hit her warm skin with a frigid blast. She hurried to adjust the thermostat and threw her bag on a table, then moved behind the built-in bar.

“All right. I suppose I do owe you a drink. And I do want some answers. What’s your pleasure?”

His mouth curved in a wicked smile. “If I said ‘you’, would I be overstepping my bounds?”

Chapter One

Dangerously gorgeous guys were not on Madison Sommers’ list of acceptable men. Since the age of sixteen, she’d stayed away from any man who didn’t look like an accountant and have the libido of one. She stayed away for her sanity. For her career.

But one look at Daniel Foreman four weeks ago as he appeared in her office for an interview had Maddie eating her words. And later, as she saw his tempting self day after day, eating her heart out, too.

Not a smart move, Maddie, girl, to crave this luscious piece of man in your bed. In your cunt.

Still, admiring Dan’s tight ass, the come-to-daddy pecs, the black-as-thunder hair and those grass-green eyes made her turn away now to thread her fingers through her chignon, take another sip of her gin and tonic and swallow her desire for him.

“Good thing you faced me, Madison, sweetie,” crooned Josh Holbrook, their mutual boss’s press secretary as they stood at the bar of the North Capital Street Hyatt ballroom. “You were about to lose your Ice Queen nickname drooling over Danny Boy.”

Madison chuckled at her friend’s insight. “Can’t hide anything from you, can I?”

“Nor should you.” Josh lifted his martini in a toast. “That’s how you and I serve our country,” and he tipped his head toward the white-haired hulk who was the Speaker of the House, “and our god, over there.”

“So what do you think of Dan’s performance so far?” she asked the co-worker whose opinion she trusted above all others on the Speaker Paul Trask’s staff.

“He hasn’t been here that long but Dan the Man is stellar. Fast thinker. Knows more about the federal transportation regs than the boys over at 1600. Better yet, he charms the panties off every man, woman and beast he deigns to smile at. And the only girl he really wants—” Josh arched a blond brow at her, “is you.”

“Please,” she scoffed, but her traitorous pulse jumped at the very idea.

Josh snorted. “Do not tell me you haven’t noticed.”

She had. Oh, she had. The startling green eyes that slid down her body the first day she interviewed him for the job of policy analyst on homeland security issues. The height, tall as heaven, all six-four hovering over her when he appeared at her desk as if he were a shield protecting her from hell. The mouth, generous and oh so kiss-me-baby sweet. The voice like gravel that scraped her raw with wild desire to strip and have him then and there. Anywhere. On her desk, on the floor. All be damned, Dan Foreman made her want to chuck every rule she’d ever made about whom to date and whom to fuck.

“What do you two think?” that booming voice came from behind her. “Can we blow this party now?”

Maddie turned, her body spinning against flesh that was a wall of stone. Dan Foreman was hard, massive and warm. Her hand reached out to steady herself from pressing against him. But Dan snatched up her fingers to hold her palm to his chest and what do you know, her pussy wept in want of him. “Ohh, I think we’ve done our duty for tonight.” She gazed up at him, continuing to cream so much her thong got soaked with need. Her mouth opened at the half-lidded beauty of Dan’s manly face. “We can leave.”

“Good. I think we need dinner,” Dan said, his voice a rough velvet seduction, his eyes drifting from her swept-up hair to her lips and the red silk cocktail dress. His invitation was clearly for her alone.

Her nipples peaked. Her pussy pounded. She bit her lower lip. “I don’t—”

“Eat?” Dan asked, his dark brows rising in shock. “Of course, you do. And I love to eat. Need to. Often. I am a big man. And you are hungry.”

“Oh, yes.” She gulped. What the hell were they talking about here? “I’m tired.”

“All the more reason to eat.” He pressed her fingers against his heart that pounded like a gong against her flesh. “Come with me.”

An invitation she should refuse.

“Okay, you two.” Josh plunked his glass on the bar. “Go. Me? Do not feel remorse for me. I am going home. Gotta get packing for my vacation next week.”

Dan didn’t glance at Josh.

Neither did she.

But as Josh bade his goodbyes, Maddie couldn’t seem to move. Captive of Dan’s charisma, captive of her own weak need to see if he was all she fantasized he was, Maddie gave in and grabbed up her evening bag. “Shall we go downstairs in the restaurant? The fish there is so fresh.”

“No.” Dan took her elbow in a grip that brooked no debate as he led her toward the double doors to the hallway.

“All right, no fish.” She waved goodbye to Speaker Trask and a few guests as she fought to keep up with Dan’s big strides. She racked her brain for places they could go that had plenty of light, bad acoustics and no banquettes where she would be tempted to sit next to him and feel every bulging muscle in his body. “Steak?”

“My pick,” he asserted, his jaw tight and his eyes straight ahead.

“Okay.” She began to stop in front of the elevator, but he hurried her toward the stairs. “Where are we going? The elevator will come in a minute.”

“Yeah.” Dan thrust a shoulder into the stairwell door, pulled her through and pressed her to the wall. “But so will I.” He cupped her chin, her head against the cold cinderblock as he flowed so close to her, she wondered if his breath were hers. “Watching you laugh with Josh made me nuts. I decided I cannot do this any longer.”

“What?” she whispered, her eyes searching the torrid way his examined her mouth.

“Wait for you to decide when you’re going to taste me.” His arms enveloped her. His body absorbed her. His lips took hers. Once, fast and hard.

She tore her mouth from his. “Oh, god, I shouldn’t.” Her eyes closed, her head lolled against the wall, but her arms betrayed her as they crushed him impossibly closer, the solid strength of him a wealth she’d never felt before. “I don’t do staff.”

“Look at me,” he demanded, his fingers lifting her jaw so that she stared right into those mesmerizing green eyes. “Christ, you are one beauty. The Ice Queen with a reputation for never doing anyone.” His forefinger traced her lower lip and then inserted it into her mouth where she sucked him with a slow delight. He groaned and with a hand to her ass, pushed her mound up against the hard proof he wanted her. “I am not anyone. You know it. I do. So tell me what we both know is true.”

She met his dare with her own madness and on a voice clear with the ring of undeniable fact, she whispered, “I want to fuck you.”
