“So, when ya gonna take me out, sugar?” the woman asked as she combed out his hair.

Damn! Why couldn’t he remember her name? She’d only cut his hair every two months since they retook Paradise six years ago. Why couldn’t he think? His mind spun, his gut burning. He studied the woman. Leaning close, he took another sniff. She smelled nice, but she wasn’t his mate.

A slight breeze hit him when the door opened and a woman walked in. Hair as straight as a preacher’s morals and black as sin itself floated around her shoulders. It shone in the artificial light, its glossy strands reflecting blue-black as she strode to the cash register. Tight jeans showed off her ample curves with hips wide enough to take a man.

Now that’s a woman. His nostrils flared. Wade took a deep breath and groaned. “What’s that delicious smell?”

What’s-her-name leaned down, pressing her lips against his ear. “That would be me, sugar.” She straightened when he chose to ignore her comment. “The usual cut then?”

Wade grimaced at her tone. She sounded pissed.

“You know what?” He stood quickly, grabbed the black nylon material draped around him and yanked it free. She wasn’t getting a razor anywhere near his head using that tone. “I forgot I have an appointment in…” He checked his wrist. Damn! He’d forgotten his watch, as well? “In about fifteen minutes. I gotta run.”

Grabbing his hat, he jammed it on his head and hurried for the door.

It wasn’t until he nearly ran down the woman at the counter, buying shampoo, of all things, that he realized where that wonderful aroma originated. His gut clenched, his insides going into meltdown as he stared at the gorgeous woman who stood in front of him.

He wanted nothing more than to grab a lock of that glossy black hair that fell around her shoulders and bring it to his nose. Perfect brows rose with surprise when he grabbed her upper arms. Sparks flew between them, and the hair on his arms stood on end, the sensation not unlike a transformer exploding in a lightning strike.

The woman, no, the goddess, stared up at him, her startled gaze frozen in a mask of beautiful and obvious amazement.

It did Wade’s heart good to know she was as affected by their contact as he was.

“Excuse me.” Wade managed to squeeze the words out as he stood staring at pure feminine perfection.

His heart raced, his chest ached, and he realized he’d forgotten to breathe. What really shook him up was when his beast lifted its head and he sniffed the air again.

Mate! The word shimmered in his mind. Deep within his human form, his cat stretched, unsheathed its claws, a low rumble in its throat, his throat, and it repeated the wonderful, fateful word…mate.

Damn! If he wasn’t so pressed for precious time, he’d pursue her. A little recreational sex was just what the doctor ordered. He’d loved watching her. Then she’d gone and disappointed him by eating too quickly and leaving barely ten minutes after they arrived. Still, by the way she carried herself, he’d bet she was beat. Even the dark circles under her eyes couldn’t detract from her loveliness. It merely brought out his protective instincts. His cock grew hard at the mere thought of sinking into her moist heat.

Nick leaned toward him, his telepathic link clear, Will you stop it already?

Adam’s eyes widened. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I’d connected with you.

Well, you did. Don’t you usually connect with me when you see a prime specimen like her? Nick gave a snort of derision. Now mycock is near to bursting with no relief in sight. It’s been years since I’ve felt such an intense craving for a woman. I want nothing more than to seek her out, bury my head between her legs and lap up her woman’s thick cream like a cub.

Adam could only agree with that idea. It wasn’t until they both saw the woman slinking through the darkness on their way to their room that their suspicions were aroused. He held up his hand, silently stopping Nick in his tracks.

Milla stared at the tarot card and sighed. This was the fifth day in a row that she’d turned over the death card in her tarot spread. The storm outside grew fierce, the wind buffeting the walls of the small hotel. She resigned herself to the fact that she would have to leave this place.

“On the winds of change,” she said with a sigh.

Death never meant a physical death like so many people thought. It stood for change. Usually, it meant the death of something old and the birth of something new. In her case, it meant that she had to move…again. It wasn’t surprising. Had she thought she’d be able to stay, she would have rented a house instead of a hotel room. She would pack up her things today and head out in the morning.

For now, though, she wanted to hike up the mountain and look down at the town one last time. She had grown fond of Mason. Not as fond as she’d hoped, but, so far, this town had been the closest to what she’d been looking for in a place to finally put down some roots. It was too damned bad the cards had just told her to move on.

The storm over, the early morning sun broke through the clouds, the rays shining like a beacon, lighting up the spot on the mountain where she wanted to go. It was another sign. One that she interpreted as an indication that she’d made the right decision.

After hiking up the side of the mountain, Milla sat down on a fallen log. Moisture seeped through the seat of her pants, but she didn’t care. Closing her eyes, she leaned back and took a deep breath. “Now, that’s what I’m talking about,” she said with a sigh.

There was nothing like clean, crisp air to do a body good. There was just something about a fresh mountain breeze after a cleansing summer rain.

Mason was close to what she wanted in a hometown but not quite. Maybe that was why the cards indicated she should leave. Milla wanted a small town with small-town values. She wanted to see men open the doors for women. She wanted common courtesy and chivalry. Maybe, just maybe, she wanted the impossible.

“I was born in the wrong time. That’s my problem.” She gave the picturesque town one last look and headed back to her hotel. It was time to leave—today. Something told her that it was time to go. Now. It was the same strange foreboding that preceded the arrival of the carnies sent out to look for her. Why couldn’t they just leave her alone? It wasn’t as though she owed them money. In fact, they owed her. It was one of the reasons why she left in the first place. There was nothing like working for peanuts.

She hurried down the side of the mountain, the feeling of urgency growing stronger. They were close. It was only a matter of time before they caught up to her. She’d have to take the time to stop at the hotel, pick up her things and hit the grocery store for some sandwich stuff on her way out of town.

After that, she’d head west again. Sooner or later she would run into a town that suited her old-fashioned standards…she hoped.

Until then, she would just keep looking. Milla had been on the road for nearly a year searching for her vision of paradise. She knew the town of her dreams was out there somewhere. It was just a matter of finding it.

After packing, she began lugging her belongings from the room. The worst part of not having a home was living out of her SUV. She carried everything she needed with her, but loading the vehicle was a pain in the butt and growing more painful with every stop.

Every time she moved, she gathered a little more stuff for her dream home. Dish towels here, bath towels there. If she wasn’t careful, she’d fill her truck soon, and then where would she be? She’d have to buy a trailer and haul that around with her, too. Then what?

Out of breath, her heart pounding with exertion, she hauled her suitcase out to the SUV and attempted to lift it into the back.

“Here, let me help you with that.”

February 12th 2013

Mia stared up at the ceiling, her unfocussed gaze seeing nothing more in the darkness than the spinning blades of the fan over the bed. She blinked slowly, swallowing as her lovers kissed her neck. Their tongues traced a path to the tips of her breasts, drawing each one into the warmth of their mouths.

Wet velvet tongues circled her sensitive nipples. Moist lips circled the tight buds. She arched her back with a moan. Why didn’t they hurry? She needed them inside her so much, she thought she might go mad with it.

Strong fingers caressed her skin as they delved deep between her legs. She bucked at the first contact with her clit. Sharp teeth nipped and shards of pure electric pleasure shot straight from the hardened tips to her groin. Moisture slid sinuously from her channel, slickening her flesh.

“Tell us you want us, love.”

How could she tell them anything but what they wanted to hear? “God, yes! I want you so much.”

Tonight was the second time they would take her together. Afterward, they would leave for two days, returning just in time for the wedding ceremony they all had planned. Her blood heated at the thought that soon, the two of them would be inside her and she would truly belong to them both.

It was one thing to have two younger, hot men date her, and bed her, saying that everything was okay. It was another to have them together while she made love to them both.

Never had she thought she would ever be lucky enough to catch the attention of such handsome men. Never had she dreamed that the same two handsome men would want her—not at her age.

They looked so young, and she was no spring chicken. That was for sure. At forty, she looked almost old enough to be their mother. What had shocked her, though, was finding out that these two gorgeous guys were vampires. Both of them were ancient. She might look like a cradle robber while she went out with them, but the situation was, in fact, quite the reverse. Not that she minded at this moment in time.

They both suckled her nipples, pulling the tight buds into their mouths until she squeezed her eyes shut. Her thoughts, every conscious desire she had, floated away on a sea of lust and want until all she could think about was having them both inside her.

“**** me.” She tossed her head on the bed. “I can’t take this anymore. Please. **** me,” she begged while they continued to stroke her sensitized flesh. They nipped and licked their way over her body as she whimpered, her head thrashing on the thick comforter.

“We want this night to be unforgettable.” A hand cupped her cheek and turned her head. “Look at me,” Pierce said, the bass of his voice low with command.

Mia opened her eyes and looked up into his dark gaze. A lock of black hair fell over his forehead, masking his brows.

“This night is in preparation for the fourteenth.” He pressed a gentle kiss to her lips. “We will claim you in the way that only we can that night. Until then, this must be enough, though it will give us all a cursory bond.” He bent his head to her breast to suck its tip into his mouth, his teeth nipping lightly. “Do we have your permission to do so?”

“Yes! God, Pierce, you and Vincent can do whatever you like. Just **** me!”

It was a damned good thing they had decided to pay a couple of the human locals to keep a lookout for anyone trespassing on their property. Ever since scientists found the skeleton of one of their kind in a cave in the area, there had been hundreds of eager scientists looking for more.

They had been lucky with the first one. The bones had been so old, there hadn't been even the tiniest amount of viable DNA left in it. He glanced at Gavin who moved up next to him. "How do ye suppose they knew about the cave?”

"I dinnae know," Gavin said with a grunt as he pulled himself up another arm's length with little more than the tips of his fingers.

The cavern was once a sacred place for his people. They lived inside, using the fresh water that ran down the walls to drink and the small, underground lake for bathing. Now, they merely wished to keep it hidden to stop others from finding the pictographs inside.

It was never easy to explain why the hunters on the wall appeared to turn into animals before becoming men once again. They would have destroyed the cave and its evidence of the existence of shape shifters long ago, if it weren’t for the historical significance it held for their kind.

Fifteen minutes later, Malcolm climbed over the edge, stood up and heaved a sigh as be bent to brush the dirt from his jeans. “That was a bit of a challenge.”

“I’ll bet it was, if you climbed up here from the bottom. That looks like a two-hundred foot drop.”

Looking up, Malcolm met the gaze of the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Long red hair framed her heart-shaped face as she stared up at him with her gorgeous green eyes. Her thick jacket hung open over a sweater and blouse. She wore the legs of her loose fitting denims tucked inside thick, woolen socks. He cast a glance to her companion to note they dressed in a similar fashion. They were of a similar size, except the redhead was about two inches taller. He would have had a difficult time telling them apart at a distance had it not been for the long, fiery hair the one possessed.

“Aye, it is.” He smiled. “More like two-hundred and thirty.”

“You could have fallen!” The redhead looked genuinely worried for his wellbeing. It made his smile grow larger. Why, he had no idea.

“Aye.” He nodded. “Ye could have fallen, as well. The narrow path tae the cave isn’t much safer.” Malcolm didn’t mention that he would heal much faster from greater wounds than either of the women could. They were human. He and Gavin were not.

“Did ye have a guide, a local tae show ye around?” Gavin asked as he moved forward and offered his hand to the lass with the short-cropped dark hair. “Because if ye did, I’d like tae know who would bring two such bonnie lasses up here and leave them tae themselves.”

“No,” the two women said at the same time.

The gorgeous redhead shook her head, blushing prettily. “We couldn’t find anyone to lead us here.” She reached into her back pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. “I had this map my grandfather drew for me.”

Malcolm glanced at the paper, his temper flaring. “Did ye tell the locals what ye were about?"

"Of course we did!" She bristled. The action only made her more attractive. However, Malcolm doubted she would appreciate his saying so. "Do you think we have a death wish? We wanted help. We even asked for help. All we got were chuckles and innuendo.”

“Damn those hu—“

“Huge pains in the arses at the pub,” Malcolm finished for Gavin when the other man would have said humans.

“Aye. They are that,” Gavin agreed, shoving his hands in his pockets, his gaze shifting to his feet.

Do ye scent something different about the bonnie redheaded lass, Gavin? Malcolm asked as she moved toward the path down the cliff.

Aye, old friend. She smells sweet, like candy.

Malcolm’s skin prickled as he looked at the woman and took another deep breath. I think she’s my mate. He looked to his friend.Tell me ye scent it, as well. I dinnae think I could bear tae share her with a man I dinnae know.

Aye. I scent it too. Best we get them out of the cold and into the castle afore they slip away without a trace. We dinnae have an idea where tae find her should she disappear. I dinnae know about ye, but I want tae know where tae find her should she decide tae go home.

Malcolm wanted that as well. They had lived alone too long to lose her now. Let’s get them home and see if we can convince them tae stay awhile. Maybe her friend is someone’s mate, too. He wasn’t sure the men of their clan could get that lucky. However, he knew Gavin was correct. They needed to get the two females to go with them so they could learn more about the woman who just might be their mate.

"I’m lost and I want to go back home."

Gypsy sang the song she’d made up to herself and shimmied in her cage. The patrons around her gyrated and waved their hands in the air. Smoke billowed from the machines by the DJ table and floated out over the crowd. Lights flickered over the sea of bodies, but the scene around her didn’t capture her attention.

Someone touched her foot. When Gypsy glanced down to the bottom of the cage, her relief, Alyssa, one of the other dancers, offered a lopsided grin. "You can go now."

When the song ended, Gypsy opened the catch on the cage and stepped into the main room. Most nights, the allure of the Chatty Catty Club suited her. Not tonight. She stared at the bar. Allan wasn’t standing in his regular spot at the far end by the kitchen doors. Another bartender was working the margarita machine. Todd wasn’t at his post by the main entrance, either. Two muscle-bound men hulked on either side of the double doors. Where the hell were her best friends? Probably off with some sexy club girl wanting a good time. The Goddess knew Allan and Todd liked to have a good time.

Not with her.

Allan and Todd had their pick of the women who frequented the club. Both of them spent lots of time with Gypsy, but neither wanted anything other than friendship with her. She wanted more—Todd behind her, Allan in front while they pleasured her. Then in reverse. Except she’d never bothered to tell them how she felt.

Sighing, Gypsy hiked the bodice of her top up to cover another inch of her cleavage. Her inner wrist brushed her nipple through the thin fabric. She shivered. What if the objects of her desire touched her? Her pussy quivered and her fangs elongated in her mouth. She needed blood and sex. Preferably from someone who understood her new vampire nature—a man, or two, to love her. Going without blood for nearly a week hurt. Her body constantly ached, she wobbled in her cage and her focus flailed…but, damn it, she refused to hunt.

If someone had told her when she’d agreed to let Jamison change her that her life would never be the same, she would’ve dug in her feet and not have become a vampire. She didn’t mind sleeping during the day and partying all night, but the cuisine choices sucked. Either kill to eat or beg a human to allow you to bite them—and if that didn’t work then she got to starve.

What if I want a steak? Or a daiquiri?

Thinking about food wouldn’t help matters, anyway. She shoved the thoughts aside and strode to the bar. A woman from the fringe of the crowd stopped her. Her dark eyes glittered in the flashing blue and green light. "Care to dance, sweet thing? Aren’t you…mmm…sexy?"

Her smile, wide and bright, didn’t do anything for her. Sure, she embodied sex with sumptuous curves and beautifully shaped breasts, but Gypsy didn’t do girls. Not usually. Moreover, her admirer wasn’t Allan. Or Todd for that matter. The guys understood her. Hell, they intrigued her. They made her body quiver in all the right places with just a look. The chick smiling at her? Nada. If anything, she was creeped out.

"Thanks, but no thanks." She brushed by the woman and stepped forward.

"You’re here to entertain. Entertain me." She dug her fingernails in Gypsy’s arm. "I want to see something sexy. Do it."

Her growl chilled Gypsy’s blood. She caught the distinct whiff of fruit. Oranges? Gypsy ground her teeth together. O’Toole had smelt of strawberries, but she’d seen her sister destroy him.

"Look, asshat, this isn’t a tittie club. It’s a dance club. Skin, yes—sex, no." Gypsy shrugged out of the woman’s grasp. "I’m not interested and I will use my boot. Got it?"

The woman’s eyes flashed and she tipped her head once in a jerking motion. "Whatever, bitch. You will."

Lulu left the room without looking back. It was taking all her willpower not to cry along with him. Voda had been her home and her family for so many years. She had worked from the ground up to become a part of upper management. She thought she might even sit in Stan's seat one day. If working at Voda wouldn't be seen as a conflict of interests, she would never give up her job.

But it wasn't like she wouldn't be working. Her talents would be used at Onsen to help her new family grow bigger and brighter. She waved to people who called out goodbyes as she left the building. When the glass exit doors slid closed behind her, she breathed in a deep, cleansing breath.

"Finished?"

Lulu smiled at Hotsuma, who stood against his limo looking suave, wearing a dark gray business suit that showed off his lean, muscled physique. His black hair was slicked back with mousse to hide the awkward in-between stage of being past his ears but not quite to his shoulders. A pair of dark, fitted shades completed the powerful businessman look that made Lulu's heart rate increase. "Yes."

"That took longer than I thought."

"Stan was crying."

"Were you?"

"No."

He walked forward and placed his palm against her cheek. "Not yet."

"Don't say that or I'll start." She wanted to push his hand away but stepped closer to him and laid her head against his shoulder.

He patted her head, burying his fingers in the thick curls of her loose Afro. "I'm sorry. I know how much Voda means to you."

"I'll be fine. In a few months, I'll be totally okay."

"I told you I could negotiate a merger with them and then you could stay."

She shook her head. "No. I won't do that to Stan or Voda. The competition with Onsen is what keeps it striving to be the best. If the two merged, then Voda would suffer, even with your powers."

Hotsuma was a living good luck charm -- an ageman. Because of his powers, his family and all of his family's businesses in the US and Japan prospered. They might have prospered without his powers, but having them was a guarantee. No strife had ever touched the Mizuno family thanks to Hotsuma and those before him who had held the ageman power.

"As you wish." He wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Let's go home."

Lulu leaned against him as the limo drove them away from her old life toward her new one. She didn't regret choosing Hotsuma over Voda. Nothing could ever make her regret that. But her heart still ached.

Hotsuma cupped her cheek and held her as he lowered his lips to hers. She welcomed his kiss and took comfort in it. But his hand on her breast made her pull back. "We're in the limo."

"I know." He patted his free hand behind him and pressed a button. The dividing window between the driver and the back slid in place. "There."

"That's not very private."

"It's private enough."

"Hotsuma, this isn't right." She said that but didn't try to fight him when he pulled her across his lap and situated her knees on either side of his hips.

"Now it is." He rubbed her clit through her lace panties. "And this wetness tells me you think so too."
"You are the expert on wet things."

"Yes, I am." Edging her panties aside, he slipped two fingers into her hole. "Very right."

She nodded as she bit her lip and started moving her hips so she slid against his fingers. "Oh, so right."

Hotsuma unzipped his pants and freed his hard dick. After he scooted to the edge of the seat, he held her panties to the side with one hand and guided her down onto his length with the other.

Lulu sighed. All her sadness slipped away as pleasure took its place. "The driver deserves a raise for putting up with this."

"Once he hears the way I make you scream, he'll get one."

She smacked his chest in a playful manner. "That's not what I meant."

"I'll give him a bonus in his next paycheck. Happy?"

"I guess that'll work."

"Good. Now, then." He hugged her waist, bringing her closer and pushing his hard arousal deeper.
She giggled when he used his teeth to unbutton her shirt and edged one of her nipples free of her underbust bra with the tip of his tongue. The man had skills. She loved when he used them on her. He flicked and suckled her nipple while moving her hips so she rode him.

The car hit a bump that made his tip bounce against the innermost part of her, sending a shot of pleasure through her body and making her moan loudly.

Hotsuma rumbled, "That's the way. Let him hear you. He needs to earn that bonus."

"I don't want him to hear me."

"Tough." He started bucking his hips and sucked hard at one nipple while he tweaked the other.
Lulu couldn't help the passionate sounds that left her lips. The driver had to be able to hear her. He had to. Even through the dividing window. That would explain why it felt like he was hitting every pothole and bump in the road. If she didn't know better, she would think Hotsuma and the driver had conspired to work together so she came harder and faster.

Two men at once. The thought of it sent a thrill through her body that heightened the sensation of Hotsuma rubbing inside her. He gripped her ass, moving her so she took his full length with every stroke...

Josh stared with awe at the tiny little car that pulled up next to his truck. There was no way that thing had made it to Lobo Basin from anywhere in Texas. It had to have ridden on a flatbed or something. Seriously, it was like a wind-up toy. At least it had a Dodge emblem on it. That meant it was solidly built, but sheesh…

The lady who stepped out of the car shouldn’t even be a blip on his radar. She wore a pair of leggings under a man’s button-down shirt that had to be at least fifty sizes too big, horn-rimmed glasses and a pair of ugly flats. The way her hair was pulled back, it looked as if it was a dull, mousy brown.

So why every corpuscle in him stood up and took notice, Josh couldn’t say. Still, even though he’d just hopped in his truck to drive away, he got out and headed back into the store.

She was chewing her bottom lip, looking at the push-button cappuccino machine with a vaguely concerned look on her face.

Damn. Josh was pretty sure he couldn’t help with that and he wanted to help her in a pretty urgent way. Too bad she wasn’t looking at personal massagers. He stuck his hands in his pockets and wandered over.

“I bet Dolly could fix you up with a coffee. Or there’s the diner. I could walk you over.”

“Pardon me?” Bright green eyes flashed up at him, too pretty to hide behind those glasses. Oh damn. He could snap her up. Eat her. Like a rabbit. His cock started to press against his zipper.

“Coffee. I like coffee. You obviously like coffee. We could go have some. Together.”

“Thank you, but I don’t think so.” She turned her back on him, dismissing him, just like that.

He almost took a step back, surprise making him a little stupid. He probably wasn’t all that and a bag of chips but most women at least showed interest in his lanky, blond good looks. He tipped his cowboy hat back, staring. “Is it just me or are you always this rude, honey? I mean, it’s coffee. I didn’t ask if you want to knock boots.”

He got another one of those looks, wide eyed and bright. “Excuse me?”

“Well, you’re new in town and I was just bein’ friendly. No need to get snotty.”

“Snotty.” One eyebrow shot up. “Good Lord and butter, I just need a couple of groceries, not to get harassed and called names. Back off.”

Josh drew himself up, already mentally cursing his cowboy pride. Still, he opened his mouth right up and said it anyway. “Too bad, honey. You could use some loosening up. You’ve got a stick up your ass a mile long.”

“Tell me you don’t have any children.”

The words surprised the living fuck out of him. Josh blinked. “Not yet. Why?”

“Because I’d hate to believe that I’d have to teach children raised with such atrocious manners.” She turned tail and headed right up to Minnie at the cash register, the old bitch grinning at him like the dog she was.

Shit. Josh didn’t know whether to laugh or spit on the floor. In the end, he decided to laugh before grabbing a cup and hitting up the coffee machine, getting it to spit out a fancy cappuccino. He made it to the register before the little gal was done, sliding it down in front of her.

“Truce? I’m Josh Bolton. I’m sorry if I was rude.”

“Cheri. Cheri McBride.” Those eyes met his again and he felt that look deep in his balls.

“Nice to meet you.” He was about to ask her about being the new schoolteacher when Cheri turned to Minnie.

“Is there an electrician you can recommend?” Cheri asked.

“They put you in the old Lupin house, hmm? Paulo, honey. He’s the best. Number’s right there on the board.” Minnie’s eyes met his, challenging. Everyone knew about him and that fucking bastard, Paulo, which was embarrassing enough. To have Minnie give the new lady that asshat’s number, right there in front of him…

“You ought to get you someone in from Lordsburg.” When Cheri glanced at him, Josh shrugged.
“Paulo’s only a handyman.”

Minnie growled, so low only Josh heard it. “He’s a journeyman electrician and plumber. He’ll do fine.”

“Excellent. I just need to know my baby laptop won’t explode. It has a bunch of software for the children.”

“What went on the fritz?” Minnie ignored him completely but that was okay with Josh.

That way he could move close enough to scent her. Her shampoo had cinnamon in it. Cinnamon and honey.

“The…” She shivered, and he swore he could see her nipples draw up. “The plug in the kitchen. I need everything checked out.”

“Well, you call Paulo. You gonna buy anything else, Josh, or are you just going to ogle the poor young lady?”

Josh snapped out of his daze, his eyes rising from Cheri’s chest. “I’m good. I-If you don’t mind, Miss Cheri, I might stop by. There’s been rattlesnakes in that house before.”

“Rattlesnakes?” Her eyes went wide.

“Nonsense. Have Paulo spread salt around, that’ll fix them.”

He was going to have to growl. He did actually growl, subvocalizing enough for Minnie to back off a foot or so. “I’ll drop by,” he repeated. “Soon. Enjoy your coffee.”

There was no way he was letting Paulo have this one.

No way in hell.

MATING CALL by BA Tortuga

Stephanie has three rules when it comes to her relationship with werewolves Shaw and Jordan—keep their lusty encounters casual, never invade each other’s space and no biting. The boys have always seemed perfectly fine with all that, leaving her plenty of time to do her magick and keep her shop going.

Her rules come back to haunt her when the local pack leader gives Jordan and Shaw an ultimatum—find a mate or find another city to live in. Jordan and Shaw hate having to ask Stephanie to help them find a mate. She’s not just their best friend, she’s the hottest lover they’ve ever had. The boys will have their hands full convincing Steph that rules are made to be broken, before it is too late.

Chapter One
The smell of burned sage never got out of robes.

Never.

Stephanie shook the heavy ceremonial robe, the fabric soft in her hands, and sighed. Maybe it was time to take it to the dry cleaners. Obviously Woolite wasn’t doing it. She hung it over the back of her grandmother’s rocking chair. Tomorrow she would worry about the robe. Tonight the boys were coming over.

Tonight she’d be coming, over and over, if she was lucky.

Jordan and Shaw were worth shaving her legs for. They were worth all the fancy lotion she smeared on her body. They were…well, they were a force of nature.

She grabbed her broom and swept the floor, picking up the little bits of herbs and candle wax and fur. Pyewacket was already in her spot atop the big wardrobe in the dining room that held Steph’s supplies, black tail hanging down.

A soft yowl sounded as she came close and she reached up, tweaked Wacky’s tail. “I know, sweet lady, but it’s almost the full moon, and Goddess knows I’m not getting any hot, hunky loving outside of the two of them.”

Wacky’s yellow eyes glowed in the dim light, seeming to tell her what an idiot she was. That cat was expressive, almost magically so.

“Two years and I get about four orgasms per full moon. That’s not bad for one night a month.” It was close to perfect, really. She got her freedom to work, update the website, create her spell kits and ship them out. The day before the full moon she saved for her best boys.

They were horny then, and they put aside their worries about the pack to come to her. They worried about their pack a lot, apparently. She was like their mother confessor a little.

Which, okay, whoa. Not sexy, with the holster hips and the penguin-outfit thing.

No, today was tight jeans and a tank top, a see-through shimmery top in the same color as her eyes, deep and dark. Hrm…but they loved her in green, though she teased them about dogs being color blind. Oh, the green sundress. She loved that and it was easy access.

Wacky yowled again and she chuckled, stroking the puffy tail on her way by. “I’m making them steaks, of course. They’re bringing dessert. You, lady, are getting tuna so you can hide in the library.”
Tuna for her cat, a nice long shower for her then sizzle the steaks on either side for her boys.

It was a good plan.

* * * * *

“Do you think she’ll help?”

Jordan stared at the dessert case, trying to decide between spice cake and those éclair thingies. He ignored Shaw’s question as best he could, not wanting to think about what they were about to ask Steph to do.

“Are you listening to me? Do you think she’ll do it?” Shaw was one hell of a puppy some days, bouncing and moving constantly. Jordan wanted to snap at Shaw’s ear.

“I don’t know. Éclairs?” They were going to ask their lover to find them a mate who wasn’t her. Why would she help?

“I like éclairs. She likes the ones with chocolate.” Shaw looked closer. “Can I have pecan pies?”
“Only if you don’t pass out after we all fuck and leave me to talk to her alone.” Such. A. Pup.

“I won’t!”

The girl behind the counter gasped, turned bright red, and Shaw’s head ducked.

“Sorry, honey.” Jordan smiled a little, not wanting to bare his teeth “We need two éclairs, a spice cake and two of the pecan pies.”

“Sure. Do you want any cookies? We have snickerdoodles.”

Snickerdoodles. Wow.

“No. No more sugar for this one.” He jerked his thumb at Shaw.

“Hey!” Bright-green eyes flashed up at him from under the unruly shock of big red hair.

“I’m getting you pies.” He popped Shaw’s ass, loving that squeak.

They got another wide-eyed look from the girl behind the counter. Wow. Wow. He had to watch his damn mouth. He was just so fucking horny this time of the month. He could just toss Shaw down and fuck him raw. Thing was, that wouldn’t sate him. He needed Steph too.

There was something about the pair of them—her sweet body wrapped around his cock while Shaw took her mouth. Or Shaw’s ass working him while he watched his lover lick Steph’s creamy…

He groaned, and Shaw stared at him, sporting an amazing hard-on and a look of pure lust. Damn it.

They were never going to manage to just talk to her. Never. They needed her help, though.

“We need to go.” Shaw’s voice was pure rumble, very little human.

“Get it together, baby.” It was just stress. The moon coming. That shit.

“Here you go.” The girl handed over the bag with the pastries, pulling her hand back as though they might bite her. He didn’t even bother handing her the cash, leaving it on the counter to give the poor girl space. “Keep the change, honey.”

“Thanks.” Jordan grabbed Shaw and dragged him out.

“Teasing asshole. Fuck, I smell you.”

“Hush.” They needed to stop revving up, at least until they got in the truck. They were going to embarrass themselves.

“Uh-huh.” Shaw bounced a little bit, the shithead. Jordan had to wonder whether Nyla had given him espresso this morning.

“I mean it, Shaw. I’ll tie you up when we get to Steph’s.” That made his pup crazy, being forced to be still.

“You won’t.” Shaw groaned, almost rubbed against him.

“I will, baby. I’ll make you scream.”

As crazy making as Shaw was, his sweet mate could make his mouth dry, make him ache for it. He loved that boy to distraction. He reached over and touched Shaw’s thigh.

The lean muscles jerked and jumped, shifted under his fingers, even the cloth of Shaw’s jeans not hiding the movement. Shaw’s cock pressed hard against the zipper, and Jordan had to fight the urge to open those jeans and take that hardness into his hand.

“I hope she’s ready for us.” Shaw panted, licked his lips. “I want you.”

“I want you, baby. I want both of you. I can’t wait to strip you down and do you while you lick her.”
He wanted to just grab Shaw by the hair and fuck that pretty mouth. Christ, his hands were shaking.

“I could suck you, now, before we get there. I so could.”

“No.” No, they had to wait. It was important to not dilute the sex magick. Steph had taught them that. They would need every drop, so to speak.

“Asshole.” Shaw gave him a low, pouty growl.

“You want this to work, baby?” He finally handed the bag of pastries to Shaw and got the truck going.

“I don’t know…” Shaw sighed, fastened his seat belt, eyes facing out the window, watching the Rockies. “I don’t want to lose her. I like Steph.”

“I know, baby.” He didn’t want to end their friendship with Steph, either, but the pack was breathing down their necks. They were supposed to be good little wolves and settle down.

“If we find her, our mate I mean, it’ll be good, right? We won’t care that we’re losing Steph?”

Well, Steph had always made it clear that this was just fun and games, hadn’t she? Three buds hanging out, drinking beer, sharing orgasms? They even watched football together. Besides, she knew what they were, knew they couldn’t mate with someone for life who wasn’t one of them.

He smacked Shaw’s shoulder, just a little too hard. “It’ll be cool. We’ll be stupid in love and wanting to make puppies.”

Right?

Right.

Jeni stood in the doorway of the study looking up at the portrait on the wall behind the desk. She knew those faces.

She dreamed of them every night.

Not once since she turned sixteen had she slept a night without dreaming of those men. Both were the epitome of tall, dark and handsome. They were also the unreasonable standard to which she’d held all of her boyfriends throughout the years. No one could hold a candle to either of them. How could they? They had both been in her mind and were fictitious examples of what she expected in a man.

Somewhere, she had gotten a glimpse of a photo of this portrait. Whether it was in a book or some pamphlet of the area, she didn’t know. Her mother had brought her here to Ireland once when she was little to see her father, but they had never found him. Her father had died long before they had arrived.

Had she seen this portrait then?

She moved into the office and looked around. She wasn’t supposed to be here, but the photo of this portrait in the pamphlet had her dodging the tour guide and sneaking past the velvet rope she wasn’t supposed to cross.

Tears filled her eyes as she stood staring at the painting of two men who were long dead. They were both perfect, just as she remembered them. One with his clear green eyes and a smile that looked like it held secrets. The other, always looked somber as though he held the world on his shoulders.

They were brothers, yet not. She didn’t know how she knew that. Until she’d arrived, she hadn’t known much about the men in the portrait other than being the oldest two of the Earl’s three sons., they had both disappeared one night, never to be seen again. The Earl’s brother had inherited the title and no one ever spoke about them again, until someone found this portrait as they cleaned out the castle when it was put up for sale.

“I know you,” she whispered and swiped the tears from her cheeks. “It feels like I’ve known you both forever.”

The portrait wasn’t horribly old. It was from the early to mid nineteenth century. She looked around, wondering just how much trouble she could get into for being here. After all, she was supposed to be on a tour and ditched it. Turning, she headed for the door.

“Excuse me, miss.”

Jeni jumped guiltily at the nasally sounding voice. Looking up, she grimaced at the staid-looking butler who stood frowning down at her.

“This portion of the castle is not a part of the tour, madam.” His voice was polite as he glared down at her, his expression accusing. “If you would be kind enough to follow me, I shall escort you out.”

“Uh, sure. I mean, yes,” Jeni said with a nod. She lowered her head, too embarrassed to meet the man’s censuring gaze.
“Right this way, if you please.”
She had to hand it to the guy. He was awfully polite for a man who’d just caught her snooping around.

Jeni followed the man through the wide corridors, expecting him to take her back to the front door of the castle and give her the boot. Instead, he led her back to the tour group and left her in the back. He didn’t even embarrass her by announcing to the guide about how he’d found her snooping around in the current owner’s study.

“This is why you are a lucky group,” the tour guide said with a wide smile. “The current Earl would like to extend an invitation to any of you to spend the night to see that this is one of the most haunted castles in Ireland.”

She moved to unhook the velvet rope that blocked the way into the rest of the castle, leading them to the very room that Jeni and the butler had just vacated.

The guide smiled as she pointed up at the portrait of the two men that Jeni had just spent several minutes staring at and smiled. “The newest Earl has just discovered that, as we had thought, this is the Earl of Wessex, Edward Godwine and his adopted brother, Garrick Godwine. Rumor has it that their younger brother murdered them to inherit the title. Their father has never found peace. He haunts the study. It is said, the two young gentlemen also haunt the castle to this day.”

She turned to an inscription on the wall and pointed. “They say that they were killed by a witch’s spell and will never find rest until the right witch recites the spell on the wall at midnight on the day of the dead. The paint has been refreshed every five years since the year ten sixty-six to preserve the spell in the event that one day they may possibly find rest.”

The group filed into the room, all of them looking at the Old English writing.

Jeni stared up at the spell on the wall. It wasn’t written in modern English, but somehow, she knew what it said.

Pulling her phone from her pocket, she typed the translation into an email and sent it to herself. For reasons she couldn’t fathom, she knew she had to stay here overnight, no matter the cost.

~Excerpt~

Patrick always got the short end of the stick. He’d volunteered to be the one to challenge the Rockford wolves so that Cassidy didn’t have to witness the entire pack shift at once. Now she fucking hated him.
She’d developed a close relationship with the other members of his pack, but he kept holding back. He could lose her…or himself. Garret hadn’t officially marked her, which was part of the reason they were in this situation in the first place. If his alpha really expected to claim the human girl, he should have transitioned her into their world long ago.
Now Patrick was the monster. She still sidled up to Evan, so he obviously hadn’t manned up to the truth. Patrick was stuck explaining everything, and he’d never been good with words. Cassidy was naked, smelled sweet, and his territorial nature was off the charts. The more she pulled away from him, the more his wolf demanded he stake his claim.
“I know you remember me,” he said. “My wolf remembers you.” He ran the backs of his fingers along her jawline, savoring the soft femininity of her skin.
She cringed every time he touched her.
“I’ll never hurt you, if that’s what you’re afraid of.”
He tilted her chin up so she’d have to meet his gaze. Patrick knew his eyes would have a slightly inhuman glow, even in his human form.
“I remember,” she whispered.
“Do you remember running your hands through my wolf’s fur? Were you afraid then?”
She shook her head, still looking in his eyes.
“He likes you. A lot. He claws within me all the time, demanding I keep you close, keep you safe.”
“He?”
Patrick smiled. “My wolf. He lives inside me, only allowed to be free when I shift forms. And know that he’d never harm you, not a hair.”
When a tear slipped from her eye, he felt a sense of deep-seated relief. She didn’t hate him. She was just distraught.
“I don’t know what to think.”
“You have to allow yourself to accept things you were taught are fiction. That’s not easy to do.”
“Does everyone know?”
All her lovers were shape-shifters. He closed his eyes for a moment, wondering how to break the news to her, and if it would be too much for her naïve mind to handle. “It’s a carefully guarded secret. Only my closest friends know the truth.”
“I should have known this was too good to be true,” she said.
“What was?”
“That five amazing men would actually fall in love with a nobody like me. I’ve never had a place I belonged…until I came to Climax. Now I don’t know anything.”
He took her hand and held it to his heart. “Do you feel that? I’m a flesh-and-blood man.”
Patrick and emotional declarations did not go hand in hand. He lived in the moment, kept his inner demons in check, and played his role in the pack. Emotion led to weakness, and he wouldn’t leave himself so vulnerable ever again. Although he never expected to find a mate, he’d follow the lead of the alpha. If Garret marked her for the pack, he’d accept it. But were his feelings for Cassidy just sparked by the possessive nature of his wolf, or were they more complex? Could he actually love the little human, trust her with his heart? He’d vowed never to put confidence in a human being again, and since their females were the only potential mates for a shifter, Patrick never expected to find love.
Already Cassidy had proved fickle, turning away from him as he’d expected she would when discovering his secret. The day by the river was engraved in his memory, one of the happiest in his life. To have Cassidy look upon his wolf with adoration and acceptance was more powerful than an illicit drug. Apparently her affection didn’t extend to shape-shifters. But he could never be just a man or just a wolf. He was torn between two worlds, forced to find balance when society didn’t even know his kind existed.
“Do you still feel the same about me?”
“I feel the same as I always have,” he said simply. “You’re the one I worry about.”
Maybe he’d just let Garret handle her. Once she received the love bite, it would act as a bonding agent, connecting them on an intimate level. Any fears or misgivings she had for their wolfen heritage would subside.
“Sometimes I just want to close my eyes and never wake up. I’m tired, Patrick. My life has been a roller-coaster ride since I moved to Climax.”
“The ride is half the fun.” He wrapped one arm around the small of her back, pulling her flush to his body. This time she didn’t fight.
“But what does it all mean? What happens to us now?”
He kissed her forehead, trying to think of ways to reassure her. “Nothing has to change. The only difference is you’ll know I’m capable of defending you—under any circumstances.”

“I don’t know what to do!” Cassidy covered her face with her hands, emotion clogging her throat. If she let Patrick and Matthew head out to find the other men, she risked losing them, too. But it was selfish of her to worry about being left alone when lives could be at stake. The forests covering the lower mountain ranges were dense, rarely traveled country. Her men were out there somewhere with only the clothes on their backs.
Patrick joined her and Matthew in the clearing. His features were set hard, his muscles taut. “There’s no decision for you to make, little one. Matthew’s too weak to fight. I’ll be going after them alone.”
“What?” She bolted to her feet, rushing over to him. “You can’t go!” Cassidy looked up at his face, her palms resting on his chest. The meager light filtering down from the forest canopy highlighted his red hair and blue eyes.
“I promise I’ll be back.”
“You don’t know that. Look what happened to Matthew. He was missing for a month.”
Patrick smirked, all confidence, and brushed the stray hairs from her forehead. “You don’t give me much credit. I’m capable of protecting myself.”
She savored his touch, the heat of his skin under her palms, and the aura of pure masculine strength he radiated. But as capable as he was, he was just a man. How could he compete with thousands of acres of forest and mountains, not to mention the man-killing wolves running rampant?
“I won’t let you go alone,” said Matthew, his voice deep and final.
“Brother, stay with Cassidy. You need to regain your strength. You’re skin and bones, and your mind is still weak.”
“Don’t even try it, Red. I’m not an invalid.”
She knew in her heart that she wanted the two men to stay with her in the cabin, love her, and ease her worries. But that was selfish. Garret, Evan, and Travis were out there in the great beyond fighting a battle that didn’t need to be fought. They needed to be informed that the Rockford miners weren’t responsible for Matthew’s disappearance. Garret had yet to lay eyes on his missing friend. She couldn’t wait for the reunion.
In her perfect world, all her men would be with her, but nothing seemed to go as planned in Climax.
“You’ll both go. But I’m coming with you.”
“No!” they said in unison.
She pulled away from Patrick and paced the small clearing. “I won’t sit here doing nothing, wondering if you’ll ever return. I’d be sick with worry until you came back. But I can’t just ignore the fact that the others are still out there somewhere.”
“Cassidy, it’s no Garden of Eden where they’re heading. It’s rough country, the likes you’ve never seen.” Matthew turned her around to face him. “It’s dangerous.” His green eyes pleaded with her to change her mind, but it was already set. They should know by now how determined she could get when she made a decision.
“You’ll both keep me safe,” she reassured. “We’ll find Garret, Evan, and Travis, tell them the truth, and then come home together.” Like a family. It may be wishful thinking to assume she’d get her happily ever after with all five men, but she wouldn’t give up her dream just yet. The two most stubborn were Patrick and Travis. They seemed resolute to keep their emotions behind tight guards, whereas the other three were more accepting of a long-term ménage relationship.
“No way!” Patrick frowned, but in her eyes, he only looked sexy as hell. He could never threaten her with a look or tone of voice, not after everything they’d done together. Even under the barrage of problems facing her, he still managed to spark her libido to life. “You’re too delicate for such a trip. It’s out of the question.” She raked her gaze over his body. He only wore some worn-out Wranglers, low on his hips. The dark tattoos running down the length of his arms combined with his size and strength created one badass visual. But she still planned to get her own way.
“He’s right,” said Matthew.
She took a breath and resumed her pacing. Cassidy didn’t want to tell them that she was actually terrified of being left alone in the cabin while they went in search of the other men. She had to appear strong, capable, and independent. Although she’d taken care of herself all her life, the recent events left her nerves ragged and a deep-seated fear of the nighttime forest in her psyche. Since the rest of the crew had to be found, it seemed the only logical resolution was for her to come along. As long as she had Patrick and Matthew by her sides, she’d feel safe and protected, no matter how grueling the journey may be.
“Fine.” She had to know when to play her hand, and right now was not the time. Both men were flustered, anxious, and determined to deny her. Maybe after spending the afternoon together, they’d have a change of heart. She was quickly learning each man’s weakness, what made them growl or pull her hair harder during lovemaking.
Cassidy walked away, returning to the cabin. She hoped they gave her a few minutes alone to collect her thoughts. So much had happened in her life recently, she didn’t know if she was coming or going. She’d just met Matthew after all the drama of trying to get him back, and he’d already managed to steal her heart. Was it because she felt she already knew him, anticipating his return? Garret had spoken so much about the missing miner, he’d become three-dimensional before she even met him. Or was there something stronger at work—like fate? Whatever it was, she now had five men she had to worry about. ..
