“So how is this going to help us?” Suddenly attentive, Chris shifted. “They already know we fuck like crazy.” His new position had drawn the prince closer than before, if at all possible. “And that stunt you pulled in the attic leaves no one any doubts we belong to one another—”

“This isn’t going to be about us.”

“Then…” As the dots connected in the angel’s head, Duncan saw his eyes brightening all of a sudden. “It’s going to be about her.”

“Exactly.” Too late he realized his crotch was digging in Chris’s belly. “We’ve been so bent on showing everybody what we feel about one another. We totally neglected to put her in the picture.” And it was driving him crazy, especially since his angel’s cock was as stiff as his. “So it’s time to set the record straight. Yours most of all, since you always play like you care nothing for her.”

When their alpha asks them to protect Kati, as a favor to a friend, they’re shocked, and pleased to discover she’s also their mate.

Things are going smoothly until Kati’s brother is kidnapped to lure her out. Will she discover out who she can trust before it’s too late to save his life?

Alpha Remus cleared his throat and waited for the members of his pack to settle down. He was tired and just wanted to go home and cuddle with his mate. “Everyone, settle down. We’ve got some more business to discuss.”

“What’s going on, Remus?” asked Latan. “This is sort of a strange group you’ve put together.” Latan was Remus’s youngest brother and always considered the serious one of the family.

“Be patient, brother. I’ll explain everything in a minute.” Remus waited for the pack’s visitor to join him at the front of the room. At six and a half feet tall, he was almost as intimidating in his human form as he was as a bear. “For those of you who missed the pack meeting, this is Zander Temple. He’s the head enforcer for the National Council.” Remus stepped toward his mate. “You’ve met my mate, Maddie. These are my brothers, Latan and Ethan and their mate Kitania. Over there is their son, Synia, and another member of my pack, Kinnith. And last, this is Koril, the head of security for the pack.”

Latan stood up. “You’re here investigating the disappearance of the pack children in the area, aren’t you?”

“Sit down, Latan,” Remus ordered. Alpha Cardston, from a Canadian pack, had reported four pups disappearing without a trace from their pack lands. It had brought the total missing pups in Canada to twenty-one—eleven females and ten males. “That was his main purpose here, but now he wants to ask a favor of us.”

“Yes, Alpha Remus is correct. I’m on a fact-finding mission in regards to the disappearances, but what I want to talk to you about now is more personal in nature.”

Remus looked around the room. “He’s already explained what he needs and I’ve decided to grant his request, so listen up as he explains.”

Zander relaxed, resting one hand on his hip. “My boss is the head of the Council, Robert Mavers. He asked me to find someone to travel to Tennessee to provide some protection and some detective work for a close friend of his.”

“Who’s the friend?” asked Koril.

“Lieutenant Franklin Matthews of the New York City police department.”

Koril’s eyebrows rose. “Human?”

Zander nodded. “Lieutenant Matthews has a daughter. For the past year and a half she’s been living in White Bluff. Before that, she was an undercover officer in New York working in narcotics. Approximately two years ago her cover was blown, and in the resulting firestorm, she killed the eldest son of the head of the local cartel and took a bullet to her upper thigh. She had a hard six-month recovery and promptly left New York for the smaller town.”

Synia sighed. “As fascinating as all this is, what does it have to do with Wind River?”

Remus growled. “Maybe if you’d keep your mouth shut, Zander could continue.”

Synia swallowed hard and bared his throat. “My apologies, Alpha.”

Remus narrowed his eyes and then motioned for Zander to continue.

“Apparently she lost her nerve and didn’t want to continue with the stress of working in New York, and she wanted a quiet place to recuperate. Her father says she bought a small cabin back in the woods and has pretty much secluded herself.”

“Okay,” Koril said. “I’m assuming she’s the one that needs protection, but protection from what?”

“Miss Matthews has a brother, Detective Raymond Matthews, also with the New York police department. He recently got word from an informant that the Lawrence family is now ready for a little payback, and apparently they’ve discovered the young lady’s location.”

Maddie stood and moved close to Remus. “Forgive my ignorance, but I’m having a little trouble following all this. Who are the Lawrences?”

“Maurice Lawrence is the head of the largest drug cartel in New York. They’ve been trying to put him away for a very long time. He had two sons, and Katherine Matthews’ assignment was to get close to the oldest boy and look for evidence to bring the father down. It’s my understanding she got romantically involved with Eduardo Lawrence and then had to kill him when he discovered who she was. According to Raymond’s snitch, the old man is sending his younger son, Antonio, to take revenge for his brother’s death.”

Remus moved to stand next to Zander. “That all sounds pretty straight forward. You look for the son, take him out, and everybody’s safe and happy. Where does the detective work come in?”

“The snitch said the old man wants the girl to pay, and he thinks killing her outright is too fast and not payment enough for taking out his oldest son. He’s got a mole somewhere down in Tennessee that’s supposed to play with her for a while. He’s going to terrorize her and make her wish she’d never left New York. Then, when they don’t think she can take anymore, the younger son gets the honor of being the one that ends her life.” Zander grimaced. “He’s been told to do it in a way that will make her a good example to anyone else considering going against their family.”

“Why doesn’t your boss send a couple of the Council’s enforcers down to take care of this?” asked Koril.

Zander shrugged. “We’re stretched too thin. We’ve got a few teams investigating the pups’ disappearance. We’ve assigned two guards at each of the Council’s homes for children, and we’re putting forth a concentrated effort to find Kaugh’s hidden Canadian lab.” Dr. Vincent Kaugh was a brilliant scientist. Unfortunately, he was also certifiable. He’d been connected to Dr. Richard Constantine, another brilliant scientist, who kept the Alpha’s mate confined for years in an attempt to study their race. Kaugh had continued Constantine’s work after the pack killed him. His unsanctioned research revolved around combining human and shifter DNA. He was apprehended in time to keep him from having Kitania killed.”

Koril snorted. “Why the hell are you looking for that old goat’s lab? Is he even still alive?”

"Don't you tell me what I can and can't do, Ralphy." Jeanette waved a finger under the big wolf's nose, not at all fazed by his ugly snarl. "You are not the alpha of me."

"I am one of the pack enforcers, woman! There are too many hunters in town. You can't just go off and run on your own. You need to stay with the pack, do your damned work."

"I am going jogging in the park, not running under the full moon. Asshole." She'd had it with the hyper-vigilant, testosterone-riddled attitude the pack had since Marin, the old alpha, had died, and no one had been chosen to replace him yet. In fact, she was pretty sure she was going to go lone wolf here soon. She could do her work from anywhere, since she designed websites. Thank goddess for the internet.

Maybe she would go rogue right now if Ralph didn't get out of her face. "When I'm alpha I'm going to lock your ass in the closet until you learn your place!" he shouted, and damned if he didn't put a hand to the center of her chest and shove.

She didn't think; she slapped him so hard her hand throbbed, and they stared as if they hadn't known one another since they were pups, like they were seeing each other for the first time. "You ever touch me like that again, and I will kill you." She would, even if she had to do it in his sleep.

Jeanette turned on her heel and walked away, grabbing her gym bag with her running shoes and shorts and all in it. She always thought things out better when she was jogging. It was time to figure out what she was going to do while the new alpha was chosen. Or maybe permanently. Hunters all over town or no, she had no desire to hang out with such hidebound, controlling assholes.

A girl had to think of her future, after all.

Time to run.

* * *

Her feet pounded on the trail, the bass from the iPod thrumming in the base of her skull. She was heading into mile three and feeling good. Damned good.

Jeanette loved this part of the state -- Boulder close enough to visit, Denver close enough to work in, and the fucking pack far enough away to leave her alone. It was going to be fall soon and then her running would have to move inside to the gym track. Right now, she could smell the outdoors, all the trees and animals, the feel of actual earth under her feet.

She pushed deeper, harder, keeping up with the rhythm of the music, telling herself that it was totally good, to run alone. Be alone. All the time. Even if she was lonely. All the time. Damned macho pack assholes, making her take her dignity and leave them.

She turned a hairpin curve in the path and shrieked when the earth slid out from under her feet, gravel sliding, sending her slipping down the slope. One of her feet smacked into a rock and turned, rolling hard with a snap that she actually heard a split second before the jolt of pain shot up her leg. "Fuck!"

When she came to a stop, her head pointed downhill, her broken whatever pointed up, and she lay like a turtle on her back, the world slowing from a sickening spin. She sucked in a sobbing breath, telling herself she was not going to cry. Not. She had her phone, she had a bottle of water. The trail wasn't busy, but it wasn't deserted, either. Help wasn't beyond reach.

"Holy shit, are you okay?"

Oh. Unless she was hallucinating the pretty blond guy appearing over the ridge, help was right here.

"No. God, no. I need help." She nodded, reaching out instinctively.

"I saw you disappear right off the trail." The man came pelting over, his trail runners slamming on the dirt. "Crap. I think you broke your ankle." He helped her right herself, her leg screaming the whole time.

"Uh-huh." She was covered in a cold sweat, shaking, nausea in her throat.

"Your phone getting any signal? Mine is dead. I can get you back to my Bronco, but we might want to call 911."

"I don't... I'm not interested in hospitals, man." Doctors didn't love people like her. Well, half-people, half wolf people like her.

He tilted his head, nose working hard. "Oh, man. I was running hard and so freaked I didn't notice 'til now... How fast do you heal?"

"Fast enough to only have to take the rest of the week off work." She tilted her head, sniffing. Oh, not one of her kind, but pretty, and not wholly human himself.

"Well, that's cool, I guess. I have to lick things a lot more..." His cheeks went red-hot, and he grinned at her. "Didn't mean that quite like it sounded. Here, grab my neck."

Jeanette couldn't help her chuckle, but she did reach up, arms wrapping around his neck. "There's something to be said for licking."

SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN by Stacey Kennedy

U.S. Marshal, Wyatt Tanning is in a race to catch a serial killer who has evaded the authorities. Just as the case hits a dead end, an unexpected email gives him a lead. As much as he wants to share the surprising message with his lover, Rye Daniels, he must hunt a killer first.

As she begins to lose all hope, fate steps in to offer her aid, but she’s well aware things will never be the same again. Soon, though, Darby begins to realize that might not be such a bad thing...

~Excerpt~

U.S. Marshal Wyatt sprinted up the front porch, hearing the wood crack and groan under his weight. At the front door, he raised his foot and kicked it open with a crash. Holding his weapon at shoulder height, he placed the flashlight underneath to offer light in the dark space and entered cautiously.

“Spread out,” he ordered.

His team dispersed, each taking a room to search. Wyatt strode forward and kept his gun in his line of vision. He scoped out the living room; if he could even call it such. Old furniture situated around the room sat covered in dust—so much in fact, it itched his nose.

“Clear,” Taryn called from the kitchen.

He glanced around, looking behind the couch first then searched everyplace someone might hide. He found nothing. “Clear,” he replied. Each of the deputies issued the same response from upstairs to confirm the house lay empty.

Lowering his gun, he sighed. He’d hoped the lead Madame Eve gave would have brought them to Marcus. Apparently, she’d been wrong, and that not only confused, but irritated him. His hopes had risen only to plummet again.

He spun around to approach Taryn in the kitchen, and a light caught his eye. If he’d come in the daytime he never would’ve seen it, but being pitch black in the room, the light glowed through the dark space. A small hole, maybe the size of a pea, sat at the bottom of the far wall.

Wyatt raised his gun and approached. “I’ve got something here.” At the wall, he squatted and ran his finger over the light. He looked to Taryn when she stepped in next to him. “There’s something behind here.”

He stood, raised his leg, and after a few well-placed kicks, his foot went through the wall. He peered through the hole to see a set of stairs, and a wall lined with soundproofing. Turning his gun around, he used the butt end to bash in the wall.

The loud cracking of wood filled his ears, but the second he stopped, something else registered in the air—a loud scream for help. He jerked his head toward Taryn. “Did you hear that?”

“I heard it.” She pushed on his back. “Go.”

The second the lights went out Stephanie Kissle bolted up in bed. Her heart pounded despite the logical explanation. In the middle of a big city, it was never truly dark except when the power went out. Still she grabbed for her flashlight from the nightstand and ran out to the hallway of her apartment building where emergency lighting greeted her.

To her further relief, she ran into her neighbors from across the hall. The sexy and slightly geeky duo, Elliot and Nate. Elliot’s glasses were a little askew, but his hair flopped in his eyes as adorably as ever. Nate, the taller and darker haired of the two, ran his fingers through his mop of boyish curls. They were her friends and her secret lust. Both were twenty-seven and currently wore nothing but boxers so she got a delicious look at Nate’s curly chest hair and Elliot’s hard muscles.

“You okay?” Nate asked her.

“Sorry, it’s so bizarre. I have a thing about the dark.”

Everyone in the building said Elliot and Nate were gay, and Steph saw no reason to doubt it. She had weekly dates with Ell to do laundry, while she and Nate did the grocery shopping together to make it more fun and max out on savings. Truth be told, she was in love with her gay boyfriends and her female friends kept trying to set her up to get her out of the rut.

“Well, come in our place. We’ve got backup battery power, and we can always rig a generator.” Ell opened the door and nodded her inside.

They followed her, and she felt safe in the warm glow of their huge TV and torch lamps. “I hope you don’t mind. I just get freaked out. My older brother loved horror movies and my parents didn’t care if I watched, but they were tough about no nightlights. Not the worst childhood trauma.” She sat on the sofa and smiled.

The duo sat on either side of her. “No problem, you’re welcome any time. Of course, we had to watch out for you. Some of the old geezers might’ve tried to grope you. It’s for your own protection.” Nate looked at her body.

“No robe?”

She looked down and felt her face burn. A lace white tank and matching panties. “I’m really not a slut. I just hate hot summers so I dress light.”

“So do we. Just less lace.” Ell winked at her.

She looked at the TV and froze. “What’s that?”

“Sorry.” Nate grabbed for the remote.

Steph got it first. “No. Why does it look like me?” A woman about her build with long brown hair and dark eyes lay stretched out a bed on the TV. It was a video game but looked a little like porn.

“It’s only one option. We’re making a new video game, and she’s a potential heroine people can play,” Ell explained. “I agree, she needs some work. Not as hot as you but close.”

“She’s naked. What sort of game is it?” The figure on TV had a big bust.

“It’s part of the mature content. She’s a zombie hunter and must replenish her strength by sleeping with humans. How many, how graphic, and so on is up to them. It’s a compliment to you.” Nate slid his arm behind her on the old sofa.

Vaguely, she remembered they did do some work on video games, reviewing and designing, but she had no clue she was in them. Glancing down at Nate’s boxers, she saw his cock straining the material. Elliot showed the same reaction. That was the real compliment.

“Aren’t you two together? We never talked about it, but I always sensed a sexual tension. You’re not gay?” Steph tried to slow her thoughts, but her body was way ahead. Her dreams might not be so farfetched after all.

“We are together. But not strictly gay.” Nate leaned in and kissed her. A jolt of happiness hit her. They wanted her.

Romans.

She hated them, loathed them.

Yet she knew from many years of dealing with them, she would not have them out of her villa and out of her country until they were ready to leave.

It was best to be gracious, which was why she’d not protested when they sought residence inside her home. She saw it as a measure in her favor. At the least, she could observe them just as efficiently as they now “observed” her.

But with the Decurio’s stinging words she regretted allowing such a thing, and resentment welled up inside her once again. They would be in her quarters, partaking of her hospitality. They would be within her home, close to her own private chambers.

She sucked in a sharp breath at the image of golden flesh tanned from the blaze of the sun and eyes as clear as the sea joined by those as dazzling as emeralds. Her breasts were suddenly heavier, her nipples dragging across the fine wool of her stola. The gods cursed her. Surely they did.

To send Roman soldiers to her home, to have her womanhood grow moist with passion for them, even the one who’d insulted her? They were beneath her in every way and they were Romans. Yet, her body did not seem to care, nor did the slick juices filling up inside her seem to either.

Romans.

She cursed them all over again.

She hated them.

She loathed them.

But she could not do away with them, just as she could not seem to bring an end to her apparent physical desire for them, so she would simply be forced to deal with the cursed centurions—for now.

Roman dog.

The slur she’d issued echoed in his head. The tongue was not entirely familiar to him, but he knew the curses of her language.

Cassius glared at the woman who swept out of the dining room, effectively dismissing him and his second-in-command.

Matron Anan Septinius. He spat her name in his head, with disdain, with anger, thinking of some choice slurs for her as well.

The Dahomey princess would have been lucky to call herself a Roman, but she was not Roman, though her husband had been, and thus she was afforded the same courtesies as any Roman matron, even if she eschewed them, even if she’d secretly waged a rebellion to remove the Roman presence from her province. Although no one could prove her involvement.

Hence the main reason why he was there with a small unit of men—to watch her closely and dispatch her if she was a traitor, to protect her from whoever did raid these lands, if it wasn’t her.

“That went well,” Titus muttered.

Cassius remained silent. Anan did not want the Romans there. Cassius did not want to be there. That was probably the only point of agreement they shared.

She hated them.

He hated her—her and her backward land.

They would get along just fine, he thought snidely.

“Well at least the rumors did not prove false—she is quite lovely,” Titus tried again, attempting to revive the spirits of a room that had grown deadly silent.

That statement earned Titus a sharp glare and in Cassius’ mind did not help his spirits in the least.

Lovely? He bit back a snort until Anan’s copper-hued skin and golden eyes shimmered before him, forcing Cassius to also bite back a groan. Lovely somehow did not pay homage to the exotic beauty of the matriarch. That Anan was comely, he could not deny, nor could his body seem to. That she was a barbarian bitch he could not deny either. His body had no reaction to that either way.

Cassius shrugged. “She is passable.” He ignored Titus’ chuckle.

“You may not like her, but you cannot deny such things.”

Cassius could not, but neither would he nurture Titus’ longings for the woman. He could hear the appreciation in his voice, and he frowned at that. A woman such as Anan was forbidden to them for so many reasons—the most important being that if they were to do their duty, they could not be distracted.

The other reason was far more obvious—that Anan would simply not want them. If the rumors were true she’d barely suffered the touch of her Roman husband.

“You’re a fool if you think she will have you,” Cassius said to Titus as he made his way out of the dining room toward the quarters Anan had furnished for him and his second-in-command. She had actually provided quarters to house his entire unit in a separate wing of her villa. It was a gracious gesture. He did not get the impression Anan was a gracious woman.

“Then I am a fool, because she is the most pleasing thing I’ve seen since leaving the countryside.”

Cassius speared him with his gaze.

“Besides you, of course,” added Titus with a wickedly handsome smirk. “And if rumor holds, she hasn’t had anyone in quite some time.” Titus wriggled his brows.

“I assure you she is not so desperate to lie with a Roman, and a common soldier at that,” Cassius said with a snort before flashing Titus a crooked grin.

The moment alone afforded them a measure of privacy they’d not had in a while and he touched Titus gently along his forearm, a fleeting gesture of intimacy.

His fingertips grazed tanned, golden skin, igniting a small, burgeoning fire in his belly that traced a path to his groin. In an instant, Cassius went from being the rigid Decurio, the commander of the small Roman unit, to a simple lover who sought pleasure in the arms of his second-in-command.

Titus’ pupils darkened and Cassius knew his must have done the same when Titus whispered, “Later.”

He nodded in agreement. Their journey from Tivoli to Anan’s estate had been long and arduous. The pace had been grueling. His men were tired. They had barely rested, let alone indulged in carnal pleasures.

He was weary. Cassius had no doubt his men were of the same mind. Before his duty began, he required rest—his men did too, including Titus.

“Later,” Cassius said to Titus, echoing the thoughts in his head.

Turning, she glared at Leo. "And where do you fit in all of this?"

Leo held his hands up, palms out. "Hey, I'm just an innocent bystander here. I didn't do anything." He looked at each of them in turn. "In fact, I think this is something you two need to work out on your own. If you don't mind," he paused and jerked his thumb toward the door. "I'll just go outside and count the clover or something."

"Oh. My. God. Not another one of you idiots with that counting business. I know that's a load of crap." She grinned and shook her head. Turning to Leo, she said, "Look, you don't have to go anywhere. I realize what you two are to each other and I'm happy for you. I really am." Her bottom lip quivered and her eyes glistened with unshed tears. "If you don't mind," she stopped to clear her throat when her voice broke. "I really need to go. I have business to attend to."

"To hell with this," Nico snarled and grabbed her arm, pulling her into his embrace. "I've missed you, Caramia." He took a deep breath, taking in her scent, her very essence. "I've dreamt of you, of this moment every night for the last fifteen months." Fisting his hand in her hair, he drew her head back and stared down into her beautiful eyes.

Thick black lashes drifted down, effectively hiding her emotions from him. He brought his free hand up, his thumb caressing her full, lush lips. He wanted nothing more than to lean down and claim her mouth with his, but he refrained. Instead, he brushed his thumb over her quivering bottom lip and the coffee and cream of her cheek. He loved the contrast between the colors of their skin. He couldn't wait to see her sandwiched between the two of them.

He couldn't wait to sink his cock into her slick channel once again. He barely dared to dream what it would feel like to bury himself deep into her tight sheathe while Leo fucked her ass.

Finally giving into the urge, Nico bent and slanted his lips over hers. Closing his eyes, he groaned. She tasted of Cara, sweet, sweet honey and heaven. Nothing had ever compared to the sensation of her lips pressed against his, her body moving in time with his to the inaudible music of an ancient dance. As always, invisible lightning arced between them. It raced through his blood, heating him from the inside out like a star gone super-nova. When Cara opened her lips, he groaned deep in his throat as he thrust his tongue into the dark recesses of her mouth.

His already hard cock grew impossibly larger as he repeatedly pressed his hips against hers. He dreamt of this every time he lay down to sleep over the past year. Living without her the past months was the hardest thing he had ever had to bear. Just knowing that he left his mate needing him, grieving for him, nearly drove him mad. His need ratcheted higher as he thought about the long, lonely months they spent apart. Even the companionship of his best friend couldn't assuage the guilt of leaving her alone when he knew she would repeatedly stalk danger like a wolf stalks its prey.

Standing here with her in his arms was nothing short of a miracle. He had ached to do this, to feel her soft heat pressed intimately against him, her body quivering with the same need as his. Nico needed this woman by his side, by their sides, just as surely as he needed nourishment to survive.

"Hard. So. Hard. Gods."

Tam grinned at his ability to render Aleo monosyllabic. She could only get out a single word with every thrust of his hips.

He leaned into her and licked her lips. "Don't talk. You'll bite your tongue."

She grabbed his head. Her fingers clawed at his scalp, probably trying to grab at hair that wasn't there. Tam had had too many lovers trying to pull his hair out while in the throes of passion. He kept his black hair close-shaven to avoid that pain.

With a frustrated sound, Aleo clamped her hands around his head and pulled him down to her lips. She didn't have to be so rough. He wanted to kiss her.

Tam pressed his lips to hers and forced her to open her mouth wide so he could taste every bit of her. He dominated the kiss, plundering her deep for his enjoyment. Aleo wasn't complaining and neither were the hundreds of mermen watching Tam's performance. In fact, many cheered.

Their adulation only made Tam harder. He melded his front to Aleo's, burying himself as deep as he could go. He snaked his navy blue tail from side to side, which pressed his exposed genital slit against hers. The woman screamed her pleasure. Several women in the crowd echoed the cry.

If he didn't find his mate this rite, then Tam would not lack for female companions thanks to his exhibition this day. Turning his attention from Aleo, he looked at the crowd. Was his mate there? Could she feel him calling her? Had his raw sexual energy scared her so much that she couldn't bring herself to approach the stage?

He doubted the last but entertained himself pretending it was true.

Feeling the magic of the rite all around him, Tam mentally grabbed a tendril of the energy and called out to the mate he knew was meant for him.

Come to me. I know you're there.

"Tam. Please, Tam. Let me come," Aleo spoke her plea in a soft voice. She kissed his chin and then his neck. "Please. The next couple is waiting to start. Please."

Tam smirked at her. "You beg so prettily, Aleo. I didn't know you had it in you." He bucked forward. "Or maybe it's because I'm in you that you've become so docile."

"Please."

He reached between them, pushed his finger inside her above his cock and then pressed upwards.

Aleo arched backwards, almost touching the tip of her tail to the top of her head. She worked her mouth but no sound escaped. Her whole body was taut as she experienced her climax.

When she relaxed once more, Tam left her body. The act had been pleasurable, but it hadn't satisfied him. Sex hadn't satisfied him for a little over a year. When he'd been selected as a chosen, he'd been overjoyed. At last, his true mate would come. And then, so would he.

The couple on the stage next to Tam and Aleo's engaged each other. The majority of the crowd shifted to the side to watch. A few stragglers, mostly women, stayed and cast longing glances at Tam.

He winked at them but only as a flirtation. If they were not his gods' chosen mate, then they weren't worth his time.

Slender fingers wrapped around his shaft and stroked him from base to tip. Aleo kissed his neck. "That was magnificent."

"You're welcome."

"You're still hard."

He looked over his shoulder at her. "Do you plan to do something about it?"

Aleo gave him a sly look as she curved herself around his side. She took his full length into her mouth. He could feel her swallowing him. As a momentary distraction, it was a good one. Tam doubted it would make him come. He wouldn't tell Aleo that. She was doing a good job trying.

He reclined and placed his hand on the back of her head.

Why won't you answer? Come to me.

None of the onlookers approached the stage.

Tam growled to himself. He breathed in deep, closed his eyes, focused on all of the energy surrounding him and sent out one thought as hard as he could.

Come. Now. I need you.

He didn't know what would happen. An answering call of mutual need? A woman from the crowd flinging herself at him? A smack on the back of the head from the gods for trying to hog their power for himself when there were many others trying to achieve the same goal?

He let his head loll back. Maybe he would be one of the chosen who didn't get a mate. Or maybe he would be one of the few who called a human mate. It was rare when it happened, but not impossible. A human wouldn't be able to get to the depths of the ocean where the rite was held, not without the help of a transition amulet.

If she tried, would Tam be able to hear her distress?

He opened himself to whatever was out there, hoping to feel his mate's presence.

Something burned down his spine, making him jerk.

"Tam, did you come?" Aleo looked up at him.

He ignored her and looked around. The burning happened again, quicker this time. Was this it? Was this the call of his mate?

A shimmering rainbow caught his attention. He stared at that shining, iridescent tail as though mesmerized. The burning ran up and down his spine, spreading to his entire body until he thought he would combust despite the water surrounding him.

He held out his hand as he lifted his gaze to his mate's face. "You came."

The man before Tam had worry creating deep furrows in the flawless pale skin of his forehead. All of the man's features were soft and boyish, making him look younger than he probably was. His wide, gray eyes focused on Tam's hand, but he didn't take it.

"This was a mistake," the man whispered. He shook his head and turned away. "I shouldn't have come."

Tam grabbed the man's hand and had to put his weight behind it to keep the man from fleeing. They were of similar stature and physique. He even had the same close-shaven haircut, though his hair was blond.

The man was far from the way Tam had imagined his mate would look. For one thing, he'd imagined large breasts, not a wide chest. Hard, flat abs had replaced soft, pliable curves.

Despite all of that, Tam wanted to run his hands over every part of the man. He'd never felt such a strong attraction to anyone. "I'm Tam."

"Kessen." He looked back at Tam. "I'm a man."

Tam chuckled a little but sobered quickly when Kessen's frown deepened. "I already noticed." He yanked his arm, pulling Kessen against him. Their pressed bodies enveloped Tam's cock. That little bit of contact almost made Tam come... almost.

That was all of the proof Tam needed that Kessen was his gods' chosen mate. But it seemed Kessen needed a little convincing. Tam was definitely up for the task.

Tam maneuvered them back to the stage. Kessen didn't fight him.

"I don't care that you're a man," Tam said. "I plan to prove it."

"I... I have a duty. I must marry a woman."

Tam nodded. "We'll find her together." He framed Kessen's face with his hands. "Say yes."

Kessen's frown smoothed away. A look of relief replaced it. He hugged Tam close. "Yes."

EXCERPT:

Pulling Chris down on the floor, Duncan grabbed his hair and threw back his head. “Now shut up and suck me clean. I don’t want your ass all over my cock today.”

“Afraid of the truth?” The blond angel sneered.

“I said, suck, not talk!” And with a shove, he gained Chris’s mouth, entering like an avalanche in the warm cavity that immediately trapped him as the tongue worked fast to lick it clean. And it felt so damn good to have only Chris’s supreme expertise working his magic on him, shutting out the lights, the humming, the pyramids, but mostly the truth from his tired mind, his wet laps filling his senses to the rim until nothing remained except the sucks, the plunges, the drowning. Yet, however much he wanted it to end right there and then, his cock craved the tight space it had been forced to abandon, so he had no choice but to grab Chris and pull him up against a wall, legs open, buttocks spread, ass hole exposed to receive him. The minute he crashed inside, everything stopped again to focus only on the movement, the tightness, the rhythm and Chris himself, his wonderful body pressing against his every time he pushed forward. His piercing smell filling his nostrils and mouth as he repeatedly bit the angel’s neck, Duncan wrapped his hand around the straining erection, wanting to jerk him off at the same tempo he was keeping in his ass, just to speed up the loss of the same control that had already slipped away from him. And since he was good with his hands, the angel could not resist long, flooding his palm at the same instant his own knot of emotions burst like a balloon inside the accommodating ass, wracking everything in its wake.

Exhausted, he wanted to collapse on Chris’s back, but his lover turned around and embraced him tightly.

“Because the unfortunate answer to both our questions is no and there’s not a damn thing either of us can do about it,” Chris whispered wryly in his ear before reclining his head on the prince’s shoulder.
