RAWHIDE: Volume One by Desiree Holt

RAWHIDE: Volume One by Desiree Holt

Crack the Whip

When rancher Reece Halliday met the new manager of his fetish club, Rawhide, he was shocked to see Katie Warren, the woman he'd loved and lost because of his sexual preferences. But a lot of time has passed and Katie has discovered the lure and satisfaction of BDSM—including the pleasurable sting of the single tail whip. Will Reece be able to lure her back into his arms—and bed—when he cracks the whip during their private sessions?

Slapping Leather

Liz Gillibrand wants a man she can submit to in the bedroom but still keep her sex life a secret from the conservative ranching community. When she discovers her neighbor owns Rawhide, a private bondage club, she might have found the answer. But the first Dom she meets is Alex Wright, a man she’s already connected with physically and emotionally. Once before she tried to merge her private life with the lifestyle but with disastrous results. Can Alex be the one to finally free her from the past and give her the life she longs for?

Bite the Bullet

Montana Steele hoped her new job was a new start. At Rawhide, the private bondage club, she would find willing subs who fit neatly into one compartment of her life. Clint Chavez, part owner of Rawhide, was determined to never again involve himself emotionally in a relationship. But neither expected the fireworks that erupted between them, nor the erotic attraction that would bind them together despite their best efforts.

Buckskins, Boots and Bondage

Twins Justin and Tucker Davis only want one thing--one woman to share for the rest of their lives. Angel Cruz wants two men who will cherish her forever. Sex between them is hotter than the Texas sun in August as they play out their fantasies at Rawhide, the private bondage club. But when her job threatens their livelihood, will their newfound connection be strong enough to survive?

~Excerpt from CRACK THE WHIP by Desiree Holt ~

“So maybe if you tell me how it happened, I’ll answer your question about me.”

“Fair enough.” He set his cup back in the saucer. “Remember Chad Willoughby, my college roommate?”

Katie nodded.

“Chad’s brother was into the life big time. When Chad graduated from law school, he got Chad a guest pass at the private fetish club he belonged to and said he could bring a friend.” He looked down. “I’d…been to a club twice before when we were together. But never did any more than watch,” he added quickly. “That’s when I brought everything up to you. I was fascinated with the lifestyle and wanted us to try some of these things together.” His grin was rueful. “My idea didn’t work out so well, as I remember.”

“No. It didn’t.” If only she hadn’t reacted so badly. “So what happened at the club?

“It seemed I was finally going to experience the things I’d only fantasized about. Chad’s brother arranged for each of us to have a sub for the evening along with a trained instructor.” He paused to sip more coffee.

“And?” she prompted.

“To be blunt about it, I discovered a desire for it I didn’t even know I had. It was the most explosive night I’d ever had sexually. And that’s taking nothing away from what you and I had together.”

“But you wanted more.” Oh, she was sure of that. She felt a trap opening, yawning like a big hole before her. “On a regular basis.”

“I did. A lot more. And more often. I for sure couldn’t look for action anywhere around the Hill Country. You know how conservative the ranching community is. Not even my brothers know about my…preferences.”

Katie gave him a quizzical look. “So what did you do?”

“Joined the club in Tampa Chad’s brother took us to. They have an arrangement for guest privileges in other clubs around the country. I…took a lot of business trips.” He stopped to take another swallow of coffee.

“Your brothers didn’t ask questions?”

He shook his head. “I timed my trips to coincide with legitimate business. Conventions. Meetings. Whatever.” His eyes raked over her face possessively. “But here’s the plain truth. I really wanted you, Katie. I wanted it all. You and the life.”

“Which is what led to the scene in our hotel room.” When she so childishly ran away. It wasn’t just the things themselves he was proposing. It was the total implication, the fear that she could lose herself in him completely. A very dangerous edge.

He grinned. “Yeah. That was some scene. I still remember how you looked, spread out…”

“Stop.” She held up her hand. “That’s not what I meant. Can we stick to the conversation at hand?”

The look he gave her nearly incinerated her dress. “Afraid to talk about it, sugar?”

~Excerpt from SLAPPING LEATHER by Desiree Holt ~

“He obviously had a lot of confidence in you,” Alex commented. “Leaving this place to you.”

Her defenses slammed into place. “I didn’t ask for it, if that’s what you’re fishing for.”

“Whoa. Hold on.” Alex’s killer grin kicked into place and he held up his hands. “I wasn’t implying anything. Word is you do a hell of a job here. I know Dean and Loretta wouldn’t use you if they didn’t think you were the best.”

“Sorry.” She let out a breath. “I guess I’m a little quick on the trigger.” The smile softened, and his gaze locked onto hers. “I imagine you get a lot of people who resent what happened.”

“You have no idea.” Especially the people who work here, she wanted to say. “All I can do is my best.”

When she walked him back to the truck he reached into the cab and pulled out an envelope.

“Jester’s feed information, although Dean said he’d already discussed it with you.”

She nodded. “We’re all set up for the horse. The trainer will start working with her tomorrow and in about two weeks we should be ready for Whitney.”

“I told her I’d be coming out to watch her now and then. I hope that’s all right.”

Coming here? This walking sex machine? She’d need plenty of ice water just to be within ten feet of him. Or maybe it was just that she’d been without sex for so long—by design—that her hormones were running wild. Either way, she’d need to watch herself around Mr. Sex-on-the-Hoof.

“Of course. We encourage family support, as a matter of fact.” She waited for him to climb back into the truck, but he just stood there, that hot gaze raking over her. “Was there something else?”

“Sure is. I was wondering if I could talk you into having dinner with me.”

Dinner? With a man? With this man? Liz wasn’t sure she’d even know how to act anymore. For one thing, when she’d taken over here, she’d put her sex life on hold. She couldn’t afford to have the men here actually see her as a woman. For another, she didn’t exactly have the best track record.

“Liz?” Alex’s voice broke into internal conversation. “I didn’t think it was such a difficult question.” He chuckled, a sound that hit every one of her nerve endings. “Or that I was so offensive I left you speechless.”

She shook herself mentally. “Sorry. Actually, sorry twice. Once for letting my mind drift and again for saying no. But thanks anyway.”

He reached out a hand and brushed a few stray hairs off her cheek. “You do have to eat, don’t you?”

Oh, god, his touch. She was going to embarrass herself by melting into him. She, Liz Gillibrand, the woman they all called Iron Pants. The woman who held a secret close inside her. No, no, no. She needed to get Alex Wright on his way in a hurry.

~Excerpt from BITE THE BULLET by Desiree Holt~

“You look a little flushed. The heat factor on nights like this can be…extraordinary. I thought you might like something cold.”

Heat. Yes. Only now it was due to embarrassment as she lifted the glass and sipped the icy liquid.

“Thank you.” She went over both forms, signed them and pushed them across the desk. “I believe I’ve filled everything in here.”

He lifted the sheets of paper and glanced over them. “Excellent. We’ll get you in the system.”

“Well. I guess I should leave then.”

He put a hand on her arm, and she felt as if a brand burned into her skin.

“I’m not sure if you’re prepared for this yet, but we have had a cancellation tonight for one of the private rooms.”

The muscles in her pussy clenched, and her pulse rate escalated. Tonight? Really?

“A Domme who had reserved it for after the performance suddenly had to leave,” he continued. “I have an available room and a very able sub if you’d like to take advantage of club hospitality tonight. As our guest, of course, for your first time here.”

A thrill raced through her. She knew this wasn’t the usual procedure. She assumed it was because Reece had vouched for her, but she hoped it was because Clint wanted to give her the chance to play. Too bad it wasn’t with him.

~Excerpt from BUCKSKINS, BOOTS AND BONDAGE by Desiree Holt~

Tucker couldn’t take his eyes away from Angel’s full sensuous lips as her tongue peeped out and moistened the lower one. He immediately had an image of his cock resting on the plump flesh and sliding in and out of the hot well of her mouth. He put his hands on her shoulders and turned her so she faced him, but over her head, his eyes met his brothers. They exchanged a look that their parents always called the twin signal.

I can’t tell you why, but I think she might be the one. Tucker sent his silent signals to Justin.

I agree. It feels right just this quick.

Let’s find out if it works. But don’t go all broody on me right in the middle. Don’t bring Holly into the middle of this. That’s old history.

Justin’s facial muscles tightened. You worry about yourself, little brother. I’m just fine.

Tucker cleared his throat and put his hands on Angel’s shoulders.

“Okay, darlin’. First things first. Safe word, please.”

She looked from one to the other.. “Don’t laugh. Buckskin.”

He swallowed a smile. “Yes, ma’am. Buckskin it is.” He looked at his brother. “So. Think we might ought to unwrap our little package here? See what the ménage fairy brought us?”

Justin’s gaze heated. “I think that’s a damn good idea.”

Still keeping his eyes on Angel’s tempting mouth, Tucker carefully eased the little buttons on the buckskin vest through the openings one at a time, letting the fabric fall naturally apart. As soon as it relaxed away from her body, her breasts spilled out and he captured them in his palms, their smooth heat scorching his skin.

Holy shit!

Ryver came awake with a startled scream. The man touching her inner thigh moved his hand higher. She struggled against him and tried to get away but he had hold of her ankle.
"Theron!"

"Here."

She froze. In the darkness she could just make out Theron's features on the man attacking her. The glint of something red at Theron's throat caught her eye.

The docility charm was red.

It had failed.

The complete horror of that realization kept her paralyzed.

Theron smiled at her, flashing his fangs in the dim light. "I do believe you asked what I would do to you if I were free. Shall I show you, Ryver?" He used her ankle and pulled her closer to him.

Fear kept her from answering or even trying to escape.

The charm had failed.

Theron was loose.

She should have taken him back. She shouldn't have trusted some stupid green glow over her common sense. She should never have gotten him in the first place.

Theron leaned into her. Only then did she try to move away.

She pushed at Theron's face and kicked her free leg, hoping to hit something sensitive. He still had one of her ankles trapped in his grip, and her body was half pinned beneath his, though he braced most of the weight on his other hand which was planted firmly on the bed next to her waist. Her struggles didn't faze him. Theron chuckled as he continued his descent. His mouth was aimed for her throat.

He planned to bleed her dry.

At least it wouldn't be a painful death.

She hoped.

DANCE MACABRE by Susan Saville

DANCE MACABRE by Susanne Saville

London, 1897

Caught in a web of poverty and injustice, Lily Rafferty takes employment in a dancehall. Though she loathes being viewed as a pretty piece of meat wrapped in silk for the enjoyment of the West End gentlemen out for a bit of slumming, she can't help but feel her luck is about to change.

Rhys Trevan Morgan, Viscount Talfryn is a vampire with a mission. Another supernatural creature prowls the night leaving a trail of blood and gore in its wake that eventually leads him to London's East End and to the Barbary Coast dancehall. He doesn't need the distraction of coming to the aid of a young woman forced to strip and parade herself on stage for the voyeuristic pleasure of the club's wealthy patrons.

Soon, the momentary distraction becomes a craving Rhys can't resist and he wonders if the fair Lily will be the end of his frightful curse or the vehicle of his destruction.

London 1897

Lily Rafferty would never become accustomed to unfamiliar men embracing her in public. She stiffened involuntarily, but if he noticed her reluctance, it did not dampen her partner’s enthusiasm. Seizing her body, he pulled her away from the relative safety of the shadowed wall. His careless speed gave her an excuse to keep her eyes riveted to the pointed tips of her black satin slippers as they appeared and disappeared under the swishing accordion gores of her yoke skirt. It fit snug and sleek down to her knees before flaring out like a bell, and moving quickly was a dangerous proposition on the slick wooden floorboards. The last thing she wanted was to fall. Not here.

Elegant music soared above the crowded dancehall floor as the shop-soiled quartet on stage launched into a waltz. He flung her into position. Lily felt one of her little puff sleeves slip farther down her shoulder and gave it a quick tug. Her décolletage was quite low enough, thank you. For a moment he looked disappointed she hadn’t popped out of her bodice, then he started to dance. She found her steps and followed his lead.

His hand pressed against the back of her corset. Not for the first time, she wished her undergarments were fashioned from solid steel. She glanced at his other hand, at the stubby bare fingers. At least her hands were protected from his rude skin by her long white gloves.

She risked a look at his face. Flushed cheeks. Watery eyes. A high forehead from which heavily macassar-oiled hair lay slicked back. Her gaze traveled down, past his fierce moustache, to his neck. He wore a diamond tie pin. No need to look further. Decidedly a gentleman. Yet another toff come to enjoy the pursuits of the lower orders. As if being poor were an exhibit in Regent’s Park Zoological Garden.

He noticed her attention and smiled. “Like what you see, m’dear?” He leaned down. His face was close to hers now. Too close. He panted against her cheek, his breath hot and reeking of liquor. “I like what I see. And I’ve got streamers of tickets to give to a welcoming sort of wench.”

Stomach churning, she struggled to hide her distaste. If she wrinkled her nose he surely would not dance with her again, and she needed every ticket she could collect.

“Thank you, sir.” She fixed her lips in a smile.

“Nice, ripe partridge, you are.” He removed his arm from her back and suddenly his bare hand was roaming the low neckline of her gown, where the tight lacing of her corset had affected an impressive cleavage.

As she started to object, he abruptly switched from waltzing to walking. She stumbled. Before she could completely recover, he had maneuvered her past a screen of potted aspidistras and into one of the dance hall’s dark corners. Inwardly she groaned. The management of the Barbary Coast Dance Hall arranged these corners deliberately—and for one reason. Any man without a Malthus sheath to contain his effluxion could release his seed upon the floor in the semi-privacy of such a corner.

Her French heels slipped and she clutched her partner’s sleeve. While the night’s fluids had been tracked around much of the dance hall, the floor was still slicker at the scene of the unmentionable deeds. She tried to wipe all such details from her mind. Thinking about it made her feel unwell.

“Eager, are you?” He chuckled. “Excellent. Excellent.” With drink-clumsy fingers, he stroked the skin of her breasts.

The effrontery of his actions was compounded by his bare hands. Gentlemen were supposed to wear gloves. Such crude undress would not have got him past the door of any other place but here. Here, where men with money could throw away their manners.

Closing her eyes, she choked back the protests raging to escape her lips. Kitty had warned her there would be men who wished for services beyond dancing. Touching him would earn her extra tickets and, since the girls were paid for every ticket they turned in, it meant her wages for the evening might grow considerably.

But her stomach threatened to rid itself of her meager dinner at the prospect of seeing his unmentionables.

She hadn’t wanted to be a Cyprian—in fact, she’d been fired from her last job for refusing her employer’s advances. But times were so hard, especially for orphan girls without references, and a doss house charged tuppence just to sleep standing up. She needed money.

Kitty didn’t mind the unspeakable work. Less tiring than a dance but just as quick, she said. Plus you got better paid. Getting pulled into a corner was an unparalleled opportunity in Kitty’s opinion.

His sloppy kiss upon her neck jerked Lily’s thoughts back to the present. An unparalleled opportunity, I don’t think. She’d gain more coin but lose her self-respect.

“Sir….” Politely, she tried to extricate herself from his embrace. “Sir! Sir, the music will end soon….” She turned her face away, hoping if she concentrated fixedly upon the dance floor she could get back out to it.

He mumbled something, his lips pressed against the curve of her jawbone, and continued to fondle the tops of her breasts. Her skin crawled at his touch. Not that he was behaving any worse than the other dancehall customers. Small wonder a steady trickle of girls walked out without notice each week.

“Do you not wish to finish our dance?” She attempted to pull away again, but he jerked her close.

“No, I’d much rather you finish off this.” His hand fumbled with the opening to his trousers as his hips furtively thrust against her. Not on my lovely dress! She shuddered to think what his abrasion, let alone his eventual wetness, would do to the fabric…. And she still owed money on it.

“Truthfully, sir, I am not…I don’t…I would really rather not….”

Laughter trickled through his sneering mouth. “That’s what you’re meant to say, I know. But you strumpets are never in earnest with your protests and false modesty.”

“Oh, I can assure you I am in earnest.” She endeavored to pull away once more.

He grabbed hold of her by her neck. “No, you don’t. I can’t stop now.” His voice sounded strained, and she didn’t like the look in his eyes.

“If you please,” she whispered, attempting a smile so as not to betray her growing horror, “I’ll just take the one ticket, sir. For the dance.”

“You’ll take what I give you and like it.”

Panic clutched at her heart. She couldn’t escape. She did not wish to do this—and he didn’t care. Flailing her fists, she pummeled him about the head and shoulders. His hand tightened about her throat. Changing tactics, she tried to pry his fingers loose, to no avail.

His grip hurt. She felt her lungs struggling for air as if they were battering against her corset’s constraints. No air. She couldn’t breathe. Her heart pounded wildly. She had to get out of here. Get…run….

“No!” She had meant it to be a scream. Instead she produced a breathless whisper the music easily drowned. No one would have paid her cries the least bit of attention anyway. A woman’s willingness did not matter. Most customers assumed this was what she was paid to do.

She kept scuffling despite the increasing heaviness of her limbs, despite the pointlessness. He was going to spend himself right here, in public, on her, and there was nothing she could do to stop him. With a biting stab of terror, she realized he might even kill her. And she would die in a stained dress. That relatively inconsequential concern almost made her smile at herself as dark spots obstructed her vision. What a ridiculous last thought to have.

“Hartengate.” It was a male voice, a stranger’s, rich, raspy and aloof, slicing like flint across the scuffle to pierce the haze in her brain.

~Excerpt~

Justin's frown deepened. "I know what you're thinking, you know. And you're wrong."

Paige swallowed past the lump in her throat. "What am I thinking?"

"Making choices that keep you alive does not make you weak. It would be much simpler to just give up and let this bastard win."

"I could stay where I am, refuse to run and face him."

"You could die in the process."

The thought sent a ripple of alarm through Justin. What if she refused? He couldn't hog-tie her, couldn't make her come with him. He understood her ill-ease, for he felt the same stirrings of discomfort as she at the low hum of sensual awareness that circled about them like a hungry shark. Even right now, he had to fight against the urge to haul her into his arms. And not to ease the clawing panic clearly visible in her eyes. No, his motives were not that heroic.

Against his better judgment, he allowed his gaze to drop, to caress the shape of her body outlined by her suit. He knew just what that suit of hers covered for he'd had his hands all over her just the night before. A high, tight rear end, slim hips, endlessly long legs that would pull him deep into her warmth. Desire shot straight to his stomach, swirled there. The palms of his hands begin to itch.

Paige wore her clothing like armor, each piece carefully chosen to broadcast an image, a strength she alone believed she lacked. She'd have chosen this one to disguise the fear he knew filled her. To tell him, in no uncertain terms, that she could handle anything thrown her way.

Anything.

Even the need to turn to him for help.

God, she impressed him. Aroused him, challenged him as no other before her had done. Justin scrubbed a frustrated hand across his face. He focused on the cool green gaze of the woman before him, the woman his brain told him to stay away from. He'd yet to fully recover from his injury. The last thing he needed was to get involved with a woman who screamed commitment. He was a loner. He didn't do commitment.

His body wasn't listening. He wanted Paige. Above him, below him, it didn't matter. He knew it was bad timing, but he wanted her just the same. And he would have her, sooner or later. If he had to keep his hands in his pockets, pants zipped until the threat that chased her was destroyed, he would. He could.

"Suppose I promised not to do anything you don't ask me to do?"

Paige eased out a breath. "What if I said, it isn't you I worry about?"

DEFENDERS OF CAPRA by Jaylee Davis

DEFENDERS OF CAPRA by Jaylee Davis

The Nemesis Chronicles-Book Two

Shayna, a touch telepath, has pressing goals—lose her virginity to someone she can’t read before her father changes her to an immortal form, find out who or what she is and kill whoever is trying to kidnap her. Easy? Not so much.

Daemon, a Tauran warrior, is stuck on a diplomatic mission, escorting Tauran ambassadors to Capra for trade negotiations with the ruler of Free Space. He never expected to find and claim his mate while he was there. And he certainly never expected her to be Drake’s virginal daughter. He’d always hoped to die in battle.

Drake has problems. Two mighty empires near Free Space are at war. Delvans have tried to capture his adopted daughter. A Tauran warrior has claimed her. His son, Jonathan, seems hell bent on killing her new mate. Vengeance, his son’s wraith, is behaving stranger than normal. If that weren’t enough, Nemesis has been in hibernation for over two-hundred years with no sign of waking. He never wanted this job.

Excerpt:

Since the arrival of the newcomers, Daemon was even more on edge. He tried hard to not glance over his shoulder in their direction. He’d heard the larger male order drinks, but hadn’t been able to hear what the female had said or what he’d told her in response. He couldn’t help but think they were being quiet because of him and Garrett. Occasionally, he’d catch a scent from the male and the D’Lyrian. Both seemed normal, however, the D’Lyrian’s was tainted, faintly. The female’s proved more difficult. He suspected her cloak covered the scent.

He hand signaled his frustration to Garrett, who agreed and signed back he’d not had any success either. He’d also included a nasty message, telling him to forget about the strangers and enjoy himself. Daemon laughed out loud at the crude comment.

At the moment, he had another beer to choke down. This one tasted better than the last…soap scum. He wondered what whiskey might taste like, and at the thought he glanced over at his neighbor’s empty glass.

Beyond it, two of the bluest eyes he’d ever seen stared back at him. He quickly looked away, but not before noting how incredibly attractive she was. Tendrils of black hair framed her delicate face. Her wine-stained lips were lush and way too inviting for him to chance another look. She’d been leaning her chin against her gloved hands, which were clasped and resting on the bar’s edge. Was she that short?

Unable to resist, he glanced her way and saw that one of the males must have pulled a stool over so she could sit. He swore silently and vowed to not look at her again. A female who was surrounded so protectively was off-limits to any rational thinking male.

Garrett kicked his boot against the side of Daemon’s just as a Tauran spacer staggered up to the bar and clapped them both on the shoulders. He was obnoxious and beyond drunk.

“You two aren’t the only big males in town tonight, right?” He swayed, barely able to stand. The major problem was his inability to shut his mouth. “You should challenge him for that female,” he said, each word spoken louder than the last.

A soft growl came from the wall area where the D’Lyrian warrior leaned. The drunken spacer took a couple steps toward the dark-haired male, saying, “Let’s take a look at the goods.”

*

Jonathan cursed under his breath and bent slightly to reach for one of his daggers. As his hand closed around the handle, the drunken Tauran lurched backward, viciously snatched away by the warrior nearest him and slammed head first against the bar top. The other warrior silenced the troublemaker with a hard punch to the jaw when he continued to protest. He motioned for the other spacers to come and collect their unconscious friend.

“Sorry,” the first warrior grumbled the apology. “He’s an idiot.”

Jonathan nodded and let go of his dagger. He glanced at Reardon and raised his brows. His friend answered with a slight shrug.

A different bartender, male, had made his way to the end of the bar during the brief scuffle. He caught Jonathan’s attention and asked if they would like to order something different.

“Finally,” Reardon gritted out.

Once again, Jonathan ordered their drinks. After he paid an exorbitant amount in credits, they had more whiskey, wine and a tiny data disc. He slipped it to Shayna for safekeeping.

“Good thing I wore that bra,” she whispered.

He chuckled. “Drink up so we can get out of here.”

Jonathan leaned his back against the bar while he watched the crowd. He noticed how the warrior who’d apologized for the spacer glanced toward them, not often but more than usual. He looked down at Shayna. Sure enough, she leaned across the bar top just far enough to peek back at him.

He nudged her—hard. “Would you stop looking at the nice warrior? You’ll irritate him.”

“Oh, sorry,” she muttered.

*

Daemon smiled. He’d heard the exchange between them and knew they were about to leave. Suddenly his irritation level spiked and he struggled to gain control. After all, there was no reason for him to be upset. For a short while, he’d been able to enjoy a few stolen glances with a beautiful female. He’d tasted beer, hopefully for the last time, and he’d prevented a brawl.

Normally, he’d have welcomed a good bar fight, but this time things had been different. He wasn’t about to allow anyone to hurt the female. After an exchange of hand signs, he knew Garrett thought he’d lost his mind. Daemon blamed the beer.

Excerpt:

When my cell phone rings. I look down.
It’s Steve and I don’t want to answer. I’m on a date with my husband. The children are safe with Steve. I—we—deserve this time together. Pushing the off button, I ignore the call.

“Was that Steve?”

Alex understands my dilemma. My ex has anger issues and isn’t happy that I’ve remarried. The phone rings again.

“I’ll call him back later.”

I cut a small piece of beef burgundy from my plate and lift it gently to Alex’s lips.

Feeding each other is a very sensual experience. My legs tingle. I watched his tongue dart out to catch a drop of sauce lingering on his mouth. I reach across the table to run my thumb over his lips then pull his face close to mine in search of a passionate kiss.

When my phone rings for the third time, I know it must be important. “Hello?”

“Scotty and Mac were playing around when Scotty tripped and fell, hitting his head on the corner of the door frame to his room. We’re on our way to the urgent care. He probably needs stitches.”

“Which urgent care are you going to? I can meet you there.” My stomach clenches in anxiety.

I obtain all the details while Alex pays the bill and has our food wrapped to go. We rush out into the night, our romantic evening ruined, fright replacing passion.

Guilt begins to eat at me. Why didn’t I answer the phone sooner? How is Scotty handling things? What kind of parent am I to put myself over my child? Alex seems to understand what I am feeling and reaches over to hold my hand. Without saying a word, his touch makes me feel better.

A SANTINI IN LOVE by Melissa Schroeder

A SANTINI IN LOVE by Melissa Schroeder

The Santinis Book 6

She was the last woman standing.

Madison Baker was born and bred to be a Marine. When a roadside bomb ends her first deployment—not to mention her career—she is left to pick up the pieces of what is left of her life. She’s returned to Oceanside to regroup and move on. It doesn’t mean she’s ready for a relationship, even if a particular Santini has different plans.

Love happens when you least expect it.

When he first met Madison back at the Academy, Dante Santini is sure the woman was put on the earth to irritate him. She’s prickly and mouthy. She always thinks she’s right. Worse—she almost always is. She hasn’t really changed over the years. One disagreement ends up with them lip locked and very nearly falling into bed, Dante discovers he might need to rethink his first impression.

When Madison is convinced she witnesses a murder, the only person who believes her is Dante. Together, they sift through the meager evidence, trying to unearth the secrets someone is trying to hide. Neither one of them expecting it would draw them closer—or that a killer is hell bent on making sure those secrets stay buried.

Excerpt:

Madison Baker didn’t know what day it was or where she was, but she knew one thing. She fucking hurt.

Pain radiated through her entire body. It was if someone had beaten every centimeter of her flesh. She tried to open her eyes—nothing. Hell, she wasn’t sure she was even breathing.

Am I dead?

That thought had her struggling, pushing her hand through something heavy. Dirt? She was buried? Panic surged as she tried to gulp in air and found nothing. Weight settled on her chest. It was getting so dark, so cold…she felt a bit of her drift away.

Gonna give up, Madison?

Her father’s voice echoed mind. How many times did she hear him say that in her lifetime? Thousands.
If you weren’t being a coward right now, I wouldn’t have to scream at you.

Coward?

No. Fucking. Way.

She used what was left of her energy to move her hand. It might have been only inches, but it felt like miles. A renewed sense of survival had her pushing harder, up through the debris. Up, up, then she felt it. Cool air washed over her fingers.

In the next few seconds—even if it felt like hours—she pushed harder and got her hand up through.
“Over here! I found one over here!”

As feet pounded toward her, she kept pushing until she felt a hand grab hers. It tugged and she held on with all her strength. The voice kept talking to her, telling her they would get her out of there. Then, she was free, air rushing over her face and she tried to open her eyes. Bright light burned her corneas and she shut them.

“That’s okay, Lt Baker, we have you,” her savior said. The whop, whop, whop of the approaching copters almost drowned him out.

“Who…” she broke off not sure if he could even hear her. Her voice sounded and felt like gravel.
She felt him lean closer as people started to dig around her. “What?”

She licked her lips and tasted blood and dirt. “Who are you?”

“I’m Sergeant Gee Santini of the US Air Force, and we’re here to take you home, Ma’am.”

“Thank you,” was all she could say. Then, her world faded to black again.

Then, she appeared. She was carrying a large cloth bag.

“Oh, a red convertible.”

“Yeah. I just love to ride around with the top down.”

“How old is this car?” she asked as she ran her hand along the fender.

“It’s a 1954 Lincoln. It weighs about three tons and it’s faster than it looks.”

“Ooo, good. I like to go fast.” She hefted the bag. “Could I put this in the trunk?”

“Sure.” He opened the trunk and she threw the bag in. It looked like a laundry bag that Max had had when he was in the Marines.

“Dirty underwear?” he asked

She gave him a smoky look and leaned against him, putting her arm around him and tiptoeing up to whisper, “I don’t wear any underwear.” She squeezed his buttocks, then slapped his butt. “Let’s go,” she said with a laugh, and she skipped around to the passenger side and got in.

Max hadn’t seen many women where he had been stationed for the past year, especially round eyes. This hitchhiker was almost more than he knew what to do with. The girls he remembered from before he had enlisted certainly hadn’t been as forward as this. A lot must have changed since he had left for Okinawa in 1965. He knew that there was a lot of anti-war sentiment, and that there were folks called flower children whose slogan was “Make Love, Not War”. He was beginning to think that he was linking up with one of them, and wasn’t too sure how to take it.

He was proud of his service in Viet Nam. The few Vietnamese he had met had been friendly even though they were awfully poor. They seemed to be pretty much indifferent to the war, but they treated U.S. servicemen with respect and friendship. He had heard that it was different down South in the delta, but North of Hue there was a conventional war going on between the North Vietnamese army and the U.S. Third Marine Division.

He got in the car, pumped the gas pedal once, turned the key, and pressed the starter button. The big V-8 roared to life with a healthy rumble. He put it in Drive, released the brake, and headed out onto the highway. The four-speed hydramatic shifted flawlessly as the big Lincoln shot down the acceleration ramp and merged with the westbound traffic. What a beautiful day for a ride.

“I like this car,” said Anita, her hair streaming in the wind. “I might even get a little tan.”

“You don’t look like you’ve been in the sun very much yet this summer.”

“You don’t get much sun in The Village.”

“The Village?”

“Greenwich Village. In New York.”

“Oh. Are you a Beatnik?”

“Sort of. They call us Hippies now.”

“I was a Beatnik for a while, before I joined the Corps. I still carry around a copy of On The Road by Jack Kerouak. I even took it to Viet Nam with me. It’s in the glove compartment.”

“Were you a Marine?” she asked with a wide-eyed expression on her face. “You do look like you could be a killer. I don’t think much of the war. I don’t think much of anybody killing anyone else.”

“Listen, my old neighborhood in Newark is a lot more dangerous than Viet Nam was. I had a nice safe bunker to live in over there. At home, you never know who might shoot you or stab you in the alley and there seems to be more dope on the streets than I ever saw in Viet Nam.”

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

“Who cares? Let’s just live for the moment. I don’t care who you are or what you did. I just want to snuggle up to you.”

With that, she slid across the bench seat and leaned against him. Max put his arm around her. She was warm and soft. She licked his neck.

“What was that for?”

“Did you like it?”

He looked down at her and grinned. She snuggled closer. Then she took his right hand, slipped it under her arm and placed it on her breast. Max could tell that she hadn’t been lying about not wearing underwear--at least she apparently wasn’t wearing a bra. Her nipple was hard.

“How long has it been since you had a woman?”

Excerpt from CZECH ME OUT by BA Tortuga

“So, you’re not from around here, I can tell.”

“No, sir. I’ve been working ranches down south. My sister says y’all had some tile work I could do here, so I came up.”

“Yeah? You do tile work?” The guy lit up like Christmas. “That’s serendipitous.”

“I do. Have for a while. You want to see some pictures?” Oh, man. Job. Score.

“If you have them, yeah. I have a whole front room to do.”

“Sure I do. On my phone.” He took a bite of the kolache, and the flavor hit him as he reached for his phone. Oh, God. He could eat twenty-eight of those. In a row. Duck was now on his list of yummy shit, just like this man was on his list of hotties.

The corner of Josh’s lips quirked up. “Good?”

“Mrhm.” That was a yes.

“You’ll have to try the cherry cheese one for dessert. Or pecan if you hate cream cheese.”

“Pecan...”

“You got it. Hang tight. I’ll get dessert, and we’ll talk tile.”

“Uh-huh.” He sucked down the potatoes, crunching happily. The man could cook, no doubt about it. This was all kinds of stuff you’d see on the Food Network, but with a down-home touch. Fried stuff.

He pulled up the photos from the Drus job and the McBride job. They showed him off but good. When he handed over his phone, Josh peered at the pics. “Nice. Looks great. Do you do free estimates?”

“I do. You have an idea what you’re into?”

“Yeah. You mean what I want, right?” When he nodded, Josh grinned. “For a minute I thought we’d stopped talking business.”

Korde’s cheeks heated, and he ducked his head. God, what the hell to say to that? Well, he could say a lot of things, but what if Josh tried to kick his ass? Then he’d lose this job, for sure.

“I want basic ceramic. Something we can get at Home Depot.”

“Sure. I’ve done all sorts -- you want a design? White?”

“Maybe something simple.” A shout had Josh peering at the truck. “Be right back.”

“‘kay.” He texted Karee, letting her know he might have found another project. Every little bit helped.

“Sorry. Just a tiny fire.” Josh grinned hugely and dug into one of the dessert kolaches.

“Fire?” Oh, man. “Everything okay?”

“Yep. She got a little happy with the grease, but didn’t burn anything important.”

“Dude. That’s a little space to have a fire.” He couldn’t imagine. Of course, his idea of cooking was to make cereal.

“Happens all the time. I’m lucky if I have my eyebrows.” Josh waggled said eyebrows behind his heavy glasses. “Can you come by tomorrow? We’re closed on Sundays, so I can give you whatever time you need.”

“Sure. Sure, I got no plans.”

“Cool. Got your phone? I’ll give you my number.”

He handed it back over, and Josh put in a contact. He smiled when he read it back. Josh Kolache Guy.

“Just holler when you’re ready for me, and I’ll be right over.”

“Cool. I’ll text you tomorrow.” Josh gave him a friendly grin. “Thanks, man.”

“I’ll be waiting. Hey, what do I owe you for the pecan deals?”

“On the house.” Josh clapped him on the shoulder on the way by, hand hot as fire even through his shirt. “See you tomorrow.”

“You know it.” He would totally do the work, enjoy the view too, all the way.

“Enjoy.” Josh left him, and the man had a cowboy ass in those tight jeans. Nothing hipster there.

Korde watched, the whole way, laser focused. Yeah. He’d be seeing that ass again tomorrow.

He couldn’t wait.

Hadley squinted to get a better look at the man who had dragged her from her bed early that morning, tied her arms to the mast and now informed her the whole thing was a mistake. From below deck she could barely make out the sounds of a television blaring and some distant rock music. People were obviously enjoying themselves.

Hadley was not. The truth was, she could barely see without her glasses and the midday sun’s heartless glare didn’t help. If she hadn’t been so completely stunned by what had happened, she would have demanded to be taken below and spared the onslaught of the heat on her pale redhead’s skin.

He cleared his throat and repeated himself as if she were a child or a very dense adult. “On behalf of my entire crew, Ms. Pettigrew, I owe you an apology. We didn’t mean to kidnap you. It was your sister we were looking for.”

That’s somehow supposed to be better? The thought of my sister kidnapped instead of me should make me feel pleased? Is that what they think? She snorted.

“You know what?” Hadley wished, not for the first time, that she had a glass of water. “I didn’t even know pirates still roamed the Atlantic this close to Europe. Sure, I’ve seen you guys on television robbing ships and taking prisoners in places like the Indian Ocean and off the coast of Africa, but I’ll be damned if I ever expected to be taken hostage—mistake or not—this close to Great Britain.”

He raised what was to her a blurry eyebrow. She thought she might have seen a momentary smirk on his face before it disappeared, but since she was basically blind without her very thick glasses she couldn’t be sure. Kneeling in front of her, he held something out for her to see. She looked down and joy filled her heart. He’d brought her glasses.

He opened them and pushed them awkwardly onto her face so that one arm was too high over her ear and the side other poked into the side of her head. But she didn’t care. He’d given her back the gift of sight, and that now she was no longer looking at the world through a veil of unclear fog, the anger that had been hiding at the base of her spine rose inside her, threatening to spill out.

Within moments her cheeks were burning.

Her ears hadn’t deceived her. They were still in the middle of the ocean, or at least as far as she could stretch her head left and right, she couldn’t see any land. But her boat was missing from view too. Since they’d been traveling for what seemed like hours it was likely she was nowhere near anyone who could help her to escape from the clutches of these lunatics.

In her wildest dreams, she’d never anticipated that anyone would actually kidnap her. But there they had been at dawn’s break, bursting into her cabin like a herd of wild beasts, ripping her out of her bed and forcing her off her science vessel and onto their ship. The whole experience had taken less than ten minutes. As far as she could tell, they’d left her crew entirely alone, which meant they’d been looking only for her. Or rather her sister.

They must have thought she would make the best victim in whatever outlandish plot this happened to be.

She hadn’t been able to see who had actually taken her this morning, but she could now see the man who stood before her as clear as day. He might be the one who’d taken her from the boat. He might not. Hadley supposed it didn’t really matter. They were all part of the same team.

Hadley swallowed. Even squatting, it was obvious he was huge. If she’d run into him in a regular social situation she would have avoided his presence—very tall men made her nervous. Given a choice, she preferred the men she associated with to be only a few inches taller than she was, coming in at around five foot eight or so. Shaking her head, she forced herself back to the present.

She needed to focus on getting off the ship.

Hadley didn’t know that much about boats—which was funny considering her family heritage—but she knew this one was huge. Maybe ninety feet plus, making it at least three times the size of the science vessel she’d been on. It had three giant masts, including the one she was currently tied to. She’d imagined boats like this when she read travel magazines. People rented vessels to take vacations and she’d fantasized that they looked just like this one. Who’d known she would end up being carried away to God knew where on something straight out of her imagination?

She had to look out over the horizon to see the ocean, which told her she was very high up. That meant that there were multiple decks between them and the ocean.

Although she was no expert, she would guess it was somewhere between five to seven decks, maybe more. Wherever they were, they were on a significant vessel that required a large crew. Hadley took a deep breath, knowing she was in big, big trouble.

“First of all, thank you for my glasses.” She couldn’t help it. Years of boarding school had driven manners into her psyche and right now they were all that were keeping her steady and sane. Why wasn’t the man answering? “Aren’t you going to say anything?”

Nothing irritated her more than being ignored, except maybe being humored. If he really wanted to watch her explode, he could pat her on the head and say something patronizing.

He shrugged. “You’re welcome.”

“That’s not what I meant.” She was pretty sure he knew to what she was referring.

His laugh was a rich, warm caress over her shoulder, not a sensation she should be having while she sat in the blistering sun with her hands tied behind her back. Unless she had come down with Stockholm Syndrome. Was that possible? Could that happen in only a matter of hours?

“What makes you think I’m a pirate? Maybe I’m just a kidnapper looking for ransom from your father.”

His accent was American, the first she’d heard in weeks, since she was the only non-British person on board her science vessel. She would guess he was somewhere from the South. Having been raised in New York City, all the southern American dialects sounded the same to her.

His mention of her father did nothing to calm her nerves. Very few people actually knew who he was. For more years than she could imagine, her father had worked on secret government contracts to build weapons. She’d only recently discovered this fact herself.

Most people thought he ran a shipping company. Her sister, Hailey, still thought he built boats—the story he’d told them as children. But if this man knew who her father was, then it was likely he wasn’t bringing him up because he was unhappy with the date of arrival of his latest yacht purchase or the time some goods he’d ordered had been delivered. She needed to stay calm, not give away that he’d just thrown her for a loop.

She smiled. “I think it must be the get-up you’re wearing. It screams ‘pirate’.”

Why couldn’t she stop being so pleasant to this man? He and his crew had invaded her ship before the sun had risen that morning, terrified her crew and literally stolen her from her bed, dragging her onto their boat. She was still wearing her pajamas. In all truthfulness, she should be glad she’d worn clothes to bed at all. Her quarters were right next to the boiler room and some nights she had no choice but to sleep in the nude. Now that would have been humiliating.

Five minutes ago she’d been ready to gouge out his green eyes and now, because he’d brought her glasses to her, she was treating him with civility. She closed her eyes at how pathetic she was. Even with her feathers ruffled, she could never muster enough gumption to tell someone to fuck off.

“The get-up I’m wearing? It screams pirate?” His tone told her he was genuinely confused by what she’d just said to him. She let her eyes scan his body just to make sure she hadn’t been wrong in her assessment and tried not to blush at the amused glint that lit his eyes.

Six foot three inches tall and all of him toned and fit, he looked like a man who knew how to handle himself in a fight. She wondered what his name was. He’d yet to tell her.

Stick-straight, dark-brown hair hung to his shoulders, a look that might have seemed feminine on someone else but on him said sex god.

But the long hair was nothing in comparison to the rest of him. His face was long and chiseled, with black stubble covering his chin and cheeks. His eyes were almond-shaped and green, like the color of the sea they currently swept across. Long eyelashes she couldn’t help but envy covered them, as if they kept the secrets of his soul hidden from the world.

A sleeveless white shirt allowed her a view of the multitude of tattoos illustrated on his arms. The most noticeable was a giant black bird in mid-flight, which sat on the biceps of his left arm. His green pants stopped at mid-calf, a look she wasn’t used to seeing on grown men, and his feet were bare.

“You have to admit, you’re purposely giving off a buccaneer look.”

He frowned. “I am not. I’m dressed appropriately for a day at sea, that’s all.”

She shrugged, and hissed when the ropes at her wrists dug into her skin. Well that would teach her to try to be flippant while she was tied to a mast. Her captor rushed forward and loosened the restraints slightly. Before she could help herself, she sighed with relief, then wished she hadn’t. If there was anything her father had taught her over the years, it was never to let other people know you needed them.

That gave them power over you.

When he finally finished fiddling with her ropes, he stood again. “So, Ms. Pettigrew, as I was saying—”

She interrupted him. “It’s Dr. Pettigrew.”

“What?”

“My name is Dr. Hadley Pettigrew. If you’re going to use a title, use the right one.”

Normally she didn’t care if someone called her “Hey you”, but right now it seemed hugely important that he know who she was. Maybe it would also subtly tell the man that she was not connected with her father in any way.

He nodded. “I knew that, actually—guess I forgot. Fair enough. Hadley, we meant to kidnap Hailey. For that I owe you an apology, but unfortunately there is nothing to be done about it now. So it looks as if you’re our captive.”

CHAPTER ONE

Ashton Manor, Summer - 1825

Lord Beast.

Viscount Ravenswood.

A very dangerous man.

Calantha watched the huge man cross the small ballroom toward her with both anticipation and dread. His black and white evening clothes clung alarmingly well to his well-muscled, oversized body and he carried himself with an easy grace that belied his size. Watching him move demanded all of her attention. The play of muscles under his tight-fitting breeches fascinated her as did the way others hastened to move aside as he approached.

This inexplicable reaction to him had so startled her on the first night of Lady Ashton’s house party that Calantha had fled with the flimsy excuse of a headache as soon as the ladies left the gentlemen to their port after dinner. She had not returned since. Until tonight.

She had promised Lady Ashton that she would attend tonight’s ball and Calantha always kept her promises.

Besides, she liked the friendly Lady Ashton. So, she had come. And now she watched the man the ton referred to as Lord Beast with the same absorption she reserved for her studies, her painting and her gardening. Yet, none of those things made her tremble with pleasure-laced-dread at the thought of being in the same room with them. Nor did they make her pulse race.

In truth, nothing made her pulse race. For such a reaction was an emotional one and she had long ago learned that life was safer if lived without emotional excesses and turmoil. Her heart was a frozen ball of ice in a soul that shivered from the cold winds that howled across it...if she had a soul at all.

"Oh, no. He’s coming this way. He has not forgotten our dance. Oh, what shall I do? What shall I do?" A young debutante standing directly in front of Calantha spoke.

Ah, so he was coming over to dance with the deb. A mixture of relief and disappointment flowed over Calantha. Of course he would not be desirous of making her acquaintance. She was beautiful, but boring. She had overheard herself referred to as such and thought it appropriate. A woman who hid her true self could not be interesting, but she could be safe.

Everyone knew that Lord Beast spoke only to people that interested him. It was rumored that he gave his own father, the Earl of Langley, the cut direct. And now he intended to dance with the simpering chit in front of Calantha.

She would not have to talk to him. She would not be required to refuse his offer of a dance, or even worse as she very much feared she might...accept.

"Calm yourself, Beatrice. ‘Tis only one dance. Lord Beast isn’t going to eat you on the ballroom floor," replied another young lady, sounding not in the least sympathetic to her friend’s plight.

"That’s easy for you to say. You don’t have to dance with him. I’m at sixes and sevens at the thought of him touching me," complained the silly Beatrice, "I mean that awful scar. And he’s so big."

Calantha understood her own fear of Ravenswood, but why would the debutante fear him?

Could she not see that under the bluster and glaring demeanor, was a man who knew gentleness? Calantha had taught herself to watch others closely in order to assess their true natures after making the colossal mistake of marrying a Duke who had been well named after the devil.

It was not difficult. Not really. She was quiet. She remained in the background...another protective behavior she had learned during the years of her marriage. From her vantage point on the peripheral of any gathering, she gathered and analyzed information on the people around her.

The first night she had seen Ravenswood, she had been unable to focus on anyone else and her intent regard had revealed some unexpected facts.

He cared deeply for his sisters and respected the men they had married. In his own way, he was even quite patient. It did not seem so at first, but he had an incredible ability to ignore the rudeness of the many who responded to his scar rather than to his person or his position.

Rumor had it that Ravenswood had fought with a wolf as a very young man to save his sister’s life and that is how he had become scarred. Could not the foolish Beatrice and the rest of the ton see the beauty in that, the courage and selflessness that such an action would require?

Even the servants were very nervous around him. However, at one point during the previous dinner party, a maid had come close to spilling a tureen of soup on him. He had not yelled at her, or demanded her punishment as many of the ton would do. Instead, he had saved her and so very carefully that he had not added to her upset.

He was not infinitely patient however. She had also seen him send footmen running with a look and had heard him raise his voice in argument with a local squire she found particularly set in his outmoded opinions.

Beyond everything else she had noticed about him was the truth that he was a man of power...perhaps even enough power to melt the ice that encased Calantha's own heart. The thought sent chills of fear skating down her spine. If that were to happen, there would be pain, great rushing waves of it that would drown her once and for all.

Perhaps the debutante feared Ravenswood because she too could sense this power, though Calantha had difficulty crediting the chit with such insight. After all, her voiced complaints amounted to nothing more than window dressing. Like so many others, she was bothered by the scar. Foolish child.

Calantha could have told her that true evil lurked within and had nothing to do with physical imperfection. That sort of evil had the power to hurt beyond bearing. Her dead husband had taught Calantha that lesson very well.

Ravenswood stopped in front of Beatrice and put out his hand. "Come."

Beatrice’s companion’s eyes widened at the peremptory command. Gentlemen of the ton did not order their partners to the dance floor. They made suitably bland comments and requests to which a lady could easily respond in the negative.

Beatrice gasped and Calantha watched with interest as her face drained of all color. "I couldn’t possibly, my lord. I’ve… I’ve… I already promised this dance. My partner is over there." She waved her fan in the direction of the other side of the room. "He’s waiting for me."

Had Calantha seen hurt in his gaze before his eyes narrowed? Had the hastily made-up excuse pricked his pride or damaged his ego? For some reason she could not fathom, she could not bear the thought. She tried to ignore the stirrings of compassion she felt. Compassion toward a man that logic said would not be touched by such a silly girl’s foolishness.

Calantha had pushed away such reactions early in her marriage when she realized that allowing herself to care for others put them at risk. It gave her husband further opportunities to punish her many imperfections by hurting others. She tried, but failed, to suppress the memory of her one dear friend, Mary.

Calantha had befriended the girl in the first months of her marriage only to discover that when her husband’s anger burned brightly toward her, he was capable of all manner of evil toward those she held dear. She still believed her husband was responsible for Mary’s disappearance the second year they were married. For she did not believe her friend would have left without a word otherwise.

She still regretted her lack of vigilance on Mary’s behalf, just as she bitterly repented so many of the weaknesses that haunted her.

It was definitely a weakness of mind that made her feet move forward and caused her to say, "Excuse me, please," as she stepped around Beatrice to face Ravenswood directly.

"If you are not otherwise engaged, my lord, perhaps you would consent to escort me onto the floor. I am weary of stillness." Liar. Liar. Her brain screamed at her, but she could not pay it any heed. She danced rarely and never grew weary of motionlessness. It was a condition of excellence when one existed on the perimeters of life.

His eyes widened and once again the deb gasped, this time with clear surprise. Calantha waited in frozen silence for him to answer. She had learned not to shift nervously when confronted with a potentially explosive situation and that training came in to play now. She waited.

And waited.

Finally, convinced he would refuse, she began to step back toward the outskirts of the room, as embarrassed by her behavior as she was confused by it. She could feel heat stealing up her cheeks and she wanted to cover them with her gloved hands. This man of power would have no interest in dancing with a weakling like herself.

But he was willing to escort that brainless twit, Beatrice, her mind taunted her.

Calantha could not believe how that knowledge had the ability to hurt her. She forced away the pain and summoned a smile that meant nothing, just as she had done so many times in the past. She did not remember the last time she had smiled with any true feeling behind it. She opened her mouth to speak.

Jared watched the Angel’s face take on the quality of a porcelain doll, the little emotion that had been revealed, now wiped clean from her features. She was backing away, not because she feared him as so many others had, but because she believed he would refuse her invitation to dance. He had seen the knowledge in her eyes and it seared him because he instinctively knew it had caused her pain.

He hadn’t meant to stay silent, but he, who was used to shocking others, had been completely taken aback by the actions of the Angel. Ladies did not ask gentlemen to dance and yet she had asked him. She had opened her mouth to speak again, but nothing had yet emerged.

He forestalled her speech by bowing low toward her and said, "I would be delighted by the honor, your grace."

Blue eyes, the exact shade of an English summer sky, widened and she stopped edging away. Mary had had blue eyes, but even after what she had gone through with the duke, they had never shimmered with quite the wariness the Angel's did.

Beatrice, the simpering miss his sister had arranged for him to partner, stared at them with fascinated awe. She no doubt could not believe that any lady would willingly partner him. With her trumped up story of another partner, she’d made it clear she wouldn’t.

The Angel’s willingness to do so surprised him as well. As did the fierce urge to hold her, even if it was for something as fleeting as a country dance. He had not expected anything resembling this response to the woman when he made his promise to Mary.

He reached out and to take her arm, unsurprised but disappointed when she flinched from his touch before seeming to gather her courage and allowing him to pull her toward him. He led her to the other dancers as the musicians began to play. They joined a set and she went into the dance steps with polished style.

But then, that was no less than he expected of the Angel. She looked and acted like the epitome of feminine perfection, her beauty ethereal in its flawlessness. Tall for a woman, she still gave the appearance of fragility.

Her blonde hair had been dressed in a Grecian knot, accentuating the slender column of her neck and further encouraging the perception of her as an otherworldly creature. Along with her translucent skin and composed features, it gave the impression of a marble statue of a Greek goddess rather than a mere mortal woman.

Her blue silk gown matched the shade of her eyes perfectly and exposed the upper swell of her small breasts without being vulgar.

Perfection.

Why had she asked him to dance? It did not fit with his image of her, neither the cold-hearted bitch he had assumed she must be, nor the Angel the ton believed her to be. After all, an angel did not dance with a beast.

He knew what the ton called him and did not care. He was used to the reaction of others to his scars. As he’d grown older and bigger, much bigger than most gentlemen amidst the ton, that reaction had only intensified.

Hell, the only two men of his acquaintance that approached him for size were his sisters’ husbands and they were unique in other ways as well. Neither one had ever shown the slightest fear of him and they’d both been courageous enough to marry strong-willed women. His sisters had stubborn streaks that matched his own.

Why had the Angel asked him to dance?

He frowned in thought and the lady now facing him, forgot the complicated steps involved in this portion of the dance and tripped. Jared’s hand shot out to steady her. Her eyes flew to his and he read surprise in her gaze as he gently righted her and continued the pattern of the dance. When he once again faced the duchess, he did so with relief.

"You are not staying at Ashton Manor?" he asked her, knowing the answer, but wanting to hear the melodic voice that had asked him to dance once again.

"No. I live nearby and your sister graciously invited me to attend tonight."

He knew that Irisa had invited the Angel to come for all her planned entertainments, but the duchess had only shown up for two. She had come to dinner the first night of the house party and Jared had covertly studied her, making plans to corner her and talk to her after the gentlemen rejoined the ladies. However, he’d been disappointed to learn that she had left early with a headache.

He had waited for her to appear again, but she hadn’t and he’d resigned himself to seeking her out at her home. He wanted to discern what kind of person she was before he kept his promise to Mary. His original plan had been to attend the tail end of the Season and meet her then, but Hannah had an accident playing in the garden and had not been able to travel.

When he had learned his brother-in-law’s primary country estate was near the duchess’s home and his sister planned to invite her to the house party, Jared had shocked Irisa by accepting his own invitation. Although he had been happy to see both of his sisters and their families again, he preferred his own estates, as his sister was well aware.

He found the ton and its superficial ways irritating. It wasn’t just the way people reacted to his appearance, thinking him a beast because he didn’t fit the Beau Monde’sidea of a gentleman. He hated the way truth and honor often got shoved aside in order to maintain appearances. It had happened in his own family and he couldn’t stand the sight of his father because of it. He hated the fact that both of his sisters and the mother he had never been allowed to know had been hurt by his father’s cowardly actions.

The country dance ended and the Angel followed him off the floor.

"Would you like a glass of champagne or punch?" he asked her, wanting to prolong their encounter, needing some answers to the questions that continued to grow in his mind about her.

"A glass of champagne would be lovely." The musical quality of her voice washed over him and he wanted to keep her talking, but he had to find the footman with the champagne tray.

Calantha sat in the chair Ravenswood had escorted her to before seeking out refreshments, her back ramrod straight. She feared that if she let even one muscle relax, she would lose control completely. Dancing with Ravenswood had been more dangerous than she anticipated. Much more.

Human touch was something she had avoided as much as possible during her marriage and completely since her husband's death. Yet, there was no comparison between the revolted fear she used to experience whenever her husband so much as brushed against her and the reaction she had to Jared's nearness.

She found herself terribly jealous of the time he spent facing the other ladies in their set. She wanted him all to herself. At one point the gentlemen had been required to place their hands on the waist of their current lady partners. She had wanted to shove the woman next to Ravenswood aside and take her place.

It had taken every ounce of her considerable self-control to stifle that urge.

He did not engage in the inane chatter her other partners found necessary and had in fact only asked one question - if she were staying for the house party. She had been relieved he did not ask more, that he had not wanted her direction because she knew she must not see him again after tonight. She could not afford the risk to her hard won peace.

Looking around the room, she wondered at how bright the colors seemed. It was as if everything had become more vivid and that frightened her. It was so much safer in the shadows and away from the vitality of life. She was content with her studies, with her flowers and her painting. She could not allow herself to become enthralled with a man like Ravenswood.

And yet a part of her recognized she already was.

She wanted to get up and run. Her legs had actually tensed to do so, but he returned.

"Your champagne, your grace."

"Please, call me Calantha." She hated the title that reminded her of all she had failed to be and a marriage full of hellish memories. For some reason, she despised it all the more on Ravenswood’s lips.

"Very well, Calantha. I am Jared." He said it with the same authority one might announce royal bloodlines.

"I’m pleased to meet you, Jared."

"I knew who you were before we danced."

"Yes." She’d known who he was as well, but now they had met. There was something intimate in a meeting like this, without someone to introduce them and intrude, in the sharing of their first names. "You are Lady Ashton’s brother."

He nodded. "Calantha is Greek."

She liked the bluntness of his speech. She did not have to expend effort discerning subtle nuances and double meanings.

She did not smile, but she felt like it and that surprised her. "My father was a vicar who spent most of his spare hours doing translations of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew. My mother helped him."

They had both been shocked by the birth of a daughter so late in their lives.

"It means beautiful blossom. Did they know you would grow to such beauty, I wonder?"

"I suspect it was hopeful thinking on their part."

"Their hope was rewarded."

"They thought so," she admitted.

They had believed her beauty a blessing and gift from the Almighty. Having died of an outbreak of the flu the first year of her marriage, her parents had never discovered her husband’s true nature and the curse her physical beauty had actually wreaked in her life. For that, she was very grateful – even if their deaths had left her feeling more isolated than ever.

Jared took a sip of his champagne and she watched his throat move as he swallowed. Extremely masculine, even this small behavior on his part fascinated her. He did not wear the high-pointed collars popular among gentlemen of the ton and she was glad. She would never get to look into his eyes if he could not bend his head. He was too tall.

She liked his eyes. They were filled with life. Not necessarily joy, but life. Jared felt and Jared lived.

Calantha envied him his courage to do so.

"Why haven’t you come to more of the events my sister planned?" he asked.

"I’ve been busy. It’s a delicate time for the flowers in my conservatory. They require continuous care."

He nodded and she felt the most shocking desire to reach out and touch the black silkiness of his hair. Most men would have tied it back with a ribbon, but Jared let his hang free to brush his shoulders. It added to the wildness of his appearance, despite his gentleman’s garb.

She gripped her hands together tightly in case she found them doing something foolish as her mouth had done earlier when asking him to dance.

"I didn’t like leaving my rose garden, but I left strict instructions for its care," he said.

"You grow roses?" Her voice came out faint, but she could not help it. Everything about this man drew her further into his web and she felt like a butterfly fascinated by a spider.

"Yes. I specialize in gallicas and damasks."

Gallicas.

"Do you have an Apothecary’s Rose?" Her voice had risen above her usually well-modulated tones in her excitement.

The Apothecary’s Rose did not grow well in a conservatory and though she also kept an outdoor garden, she had not been able to acquire a good cutting. Several of the recipes her mother had left her called for the hips of this particular plant and Calantha was eager to try them out.

His face turned hard, his gaze shuttered, but not before she saw an inexplicable fury blaze to life in dark eyes. "Yes."

She wanted to shrink against the wall at the rage he had hidden so quickly. She didn’t. She knew from experience that to show weakness made one doubly vulnerable. She forced herself to sit straighter and face him squarely and reminded herself that she had done nothing wrong.

Even if he divined her purpose in asking for a cutting and did not wish to give one, he need only say no. And now, she would not venture to ask.

Nevertheless, anger did not require justification she could comprehend as she well knew. So, she chose to remain silent in the face of Jared’s. Taking a small sip of her champagne, she waited for him to speak again.

"I take it you are interested in roses?" He didn’t sound angry, but she could not trust his mild response.

Her husband had often gone from mild inquiry to blazing rage in the space of a heartbeat.

"Yes."

"Do you grow them in your conservatory?" he asked, his eyes filled with what appeared to be genuine interest.

Still, she took no chances. "Yes."

"And you are interested in my Apothecary's Rose?"

She inclined her head in answer, giving neither a confirmation nor a rebuttal. It seemed safest.

"You are aware they do not grow to their potential in a consistently warm environment or confined to a pot?"

"Yes."

"Damn it, Calantha, don’t talk to me in monosyllables. My sisters can tell you that is my domain. You are a woman. You are supposed to talk in sentences, in whole damn paragraphs even. They train you for it from birth, or so it seems." He glowered at her, sounding affronted.

Startled laughter erupted from her and she covered her mouth with her gloved hand, stifling the mirth almost immediately. The sound of her own amusement so surprised her that she did not respond for several seconds.

If dancing with him had been dangerous, conversing with him was lethal to her peace of mind. "I’m sorry. I will try to do better." She took a deep breath, wracking her mind for something of interest to add. "I grow small China roses in the conservatory and some tea roses as well. They’re quite lovely and terribly fragile. They make me feel needed."

She hadn’t meant to say that last bit. It had slipped out in her effort to talk in paragraphs. She wasn’t used to it. One word answers were safer and silence was safest. There was less chance of words being taken out of context that way, or her comments being misinterpreted by others.

"Will you dance with me again?"

His question caught her by surprise and she stared at him in stunned shock, much as he had reacted to her earlier.

His black brow rose in sardonic query. "Is the idea of repeating the experience so appalling?"

"No." It was much, much, too appealing.

He put his hand out in peremptory demand. "Then, come."

She stared at his hand and felt the seductive draw of his warmth and vitality. What could it hurt? She would not return to Lady Ashton’s during the house party. She would not see Jared again. Surely, she could withstand one more dance with him.

Reaching out, she placed her hand in his, her fingers trembling as his warmth enveloped them through the two layers of their gloves. He pulled her into his arms and onto the ballroom floor as the orchestra struck up a waltz. A waltz. She had been prepared for a country dance, but not this. This holding of her person, his large body so close to her own.

Her trembling increased.

He squeezed her hand. "An angel need not fear a mere mortal, even if he is a beast."

Her head snapped up and unaccustomed anger flared inside her. "I am not an angel and you are no beast. Please do not refer to yourself in such a fashion in my company."

His thumb moved in a strangely affecting caress against the indentation of her waist and she shivered. Did he have any idea the impact his nearness had on her? She felt that tiny movement of his thumb with every fiber of her being.

His lips quirked in mockery. "The rest of the ton sees me as such. Why are you so sure they are wrong?"

"I know a beast when I see one...now."

He did not ask how or even what she meant, for which she was grateful. He merely nodded. "But you fit the role of angel to perfection."

Despair washed over her. That hated word...perfection. She was not perfect as her husband and the rest of his family had made pains to point out. Others had paid the price for her inability to attain the ideal.

She hated the sight of herself in a looking glass. Her own outward beauty served as a mocking reminder of how far short of perfection she fell where it counted...inside. She was weak, a coward. She had let others be hurt because she had withdrawn behind her walls of icy reserve, her only defense against the slights and cruelties Clairborne had been so good at serving up.

She could have made stronger efforts to protect her servants from his wrath, but she had been terrified of standing up to him. The final price of her own cowardice had been too high, the lesson of her own fallibility too well learned. Because of her, a young girl – a sweet child full of vitality and joy - had died. She could never forgive herself or forget that she was more sinner than angel.

"Appearances are deceptive."
