BOUND BY BLOOD Excerpt:

Phelan Donald stood in the center of a clearing and lifted his nose into the air. The night was deeply, densely dark, filled with the sounds of movement from unseen creatures. Their warm scent roiled around him, making his stomach growl hopefully.

A sharp crack split the night, followed by a soft curse, as someone stepped on a twig. Phelan’s keen, dark gold gaze swung in that direction. His skin quivered and his canines elongated. He scented the air and caught the sensual tang of a female shifter, infused with a power cocktail of anger, excitement, and aggression.

He grinned. It was an interesting mix for a female.

Phelan melted into the shadows beneath the trees and waited, listening to the soft footfall of the woman as she approached the clearing. When she pushed through the trees and stood just a few feet away, his senses exploded.

Her scent rolled over him, making his body clench with need. His mouth watered and his fangs ached, but more importantly, his groin tightened at her musky female scent. She was moderately tall for a woman, broad shouldered and narrow hipped, with long legs and lean, muscular arms. Her skin was a creamy brown, and her hair was midnight black, cut short and spiky. The moonlight glazed the spiky silk with silver highlights.

Her face was a small oval in the dusky light, with high, pronounced cheekbones and slanted golden-brown eyes. He swallowed hard and fought the urge to grab her. To taste her lips and stroke her body.
Phelan frowned. No female had reached his sensual core for a long time. He wasn’t sure why this one had. She was definitely attractive. But so were a lot of the women he dealt with on a daily basis.

It must just be because he was hungry. He was hungrier, in fact, than he could ever remember being. He definitely should have fed before coming to work.

Suddenly the female stiffened, her nostrils flared as if she were scenting the air, and her head swiveled in his direction. She turned her body toward him, widening her legs in battle stance, her hands fisted at her sides. “Show yourself.”

Phelan’s shock nearly made him gasp. She’d scented him. How was that possible? When they wanted to be, his kind was nearly invisible to other paranormals. They could be invisible, scentless, and soundless, blending perfectly into their surroundings at will. But this lean, beautiful she-wolf had known he was there. It wasn’t possible. Unless.

Phelan immediately shook off the thought. His kind didn’t mate either. Or rather…it was extremely rare for them to find their perfect mate. There were too many damn rules and restrictions. Most of his kind had stopped trying, contenting themselves with quick tumbles and short, intense affairs instead. He’d been better than most at pretending he didn’t care how empty these events left him. But whatever the reason, as he separated himself from the shadows and stepped into the clearing, a single thought slid through his mind.

This was no ordinary female.

When Rose exited the airport, lightning flashed, illuminating the night sky. For a moment, everything froze, then the world turned dark again. Even though she wore a coat, she shivered and when thunder crackled overhead, goose bumps rose along her arms. This kind of weather always spooked her, but this new job in Memphis should have her crowing in triumph, and she did feel that way, until a moment ago.

She shook her head as she stood in line for a cab. Just nerves acting up, she hadn’t been sleeping lately, but she’d been excited about this move. Rose felt sorry now she didn’t let Krystal come and pick her up at the airport. It’d been late and raining and Krystal Harrington worked as an ER doctor with long hard hours. She needed her rest. Rose's plane already delayed due to weather. Still, it would have been nice to see a friendly face. They’d been best friends and roomies since college, even after college, they’d remained close. They even took vacations together, and planned a cruise next year. Now, since Rose had been transferred to the office in Memphis, she would stay with Krystal until she found a place. Rose hadn’t seen her best friend for a few months but she grew excited about them being able to spend time together again.

Rose got into the taxi and gave the driver her destination. Sitting back, she stared outside at the passing darkened landscape. This city would be her new home. Who would’ve thought a girl from a big city like Brooklyn would end up in Memphis of all places? But the company she worked for wanted her at their home office. She would’ve been a fool to turn down the promotion of Executive Business Acquisitions Director for Hydden Enterprises, or HE, as those who worked there liked to call the place. She’d worked her butt off for the company and to get a promotion.

Others told Rose, at twenty-seven, she would be the youngest person in such a high position within the company. She reported directly to the President of HE and would have a staff of four under her supervision. Not too bad for someone who didn’t know who her father was, and whose mother died when she was ten, leaving her alone to grow up in the foster care system. It could’ve been worse she supposed…She’d gotten lucky.

The Robinsons, the family who raised her were good people. She’d been their only foster, but they’d housed exchange college students in the US for a limited time, so Rose never felt lonely, and they’d been heavily involved in the local non-denominational mega-church. Through the church, she’d netted a full-scholarship to college. Even though, she didn’t embrace any one religious doctrine, she did believe something greater existed out there, which no one could control. Then, even at times, it directed humanity onto certain paths.

Still, it is up to each individual to decide which road to take or not.
In her case, an opportunity presented itself and she didn’t hesitate to take it. After graduation, she’d gotten a job at Hydden and thus far, it turned out to be the right decision. Though, she missed her foster parents and didn’t enjoy moving so far away from them. Even if she hadn’t lived with them, since she’d started college, they’d been the first to encourage her to explore this opportunity.

She’d proven herself to the company by working hard and getting an MBA while working full-time and she had her foster parents to thank for her strong work ethic. As a result, Hydden rewarded her with some of the corporate secrets. Like Hydden was really operated and owned by one of the largest churches in Memphis. The locale of the real head office would be where she would actually work. Yesterday, she’d been happy and excited about this step forward in her career. Now, when the cab pulled up in front of Krystal’s house and the door opened, she found herself hesitating to step out of the car…and with no idea why.

Sound returned as my feet touched the hard stone of the floor in Dialle’s throne room. The room appeared empty. I shivered, rubbing my arms against an unaccustomed cold. I also noticed the small cracks in the walls and floor. Brina caught my eye and jerked her head toward the far wall.

A sense of déjà vu struck me as I followed her glance to where Dialle stood with his back to me, facing the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked over the distant skyline of Angel City. He had his hands clasped behind him, his long, muscular legs spread wide. In that moment he reminded me so much of his father King Dialle the First who was currently warming his sexy heels in the fiery environs of Hell. First had been standing just that way the day I’d been introduced to him.

But there was a marked difference. Dialle’s father had stood with cocky assurance, broad shoulders squared, chin high. Dialle the son looked, in that moment, like a defeated man.

Brina disappeared with a wisp of sound that I barely noticed.

Debris crunched under my boots as I crossed the enormous room. Dust and chunks of rock from the decaying court lay in a ragged blanket over the once-pristine stone of Dialle’s throne room. It was a disparaging portent of what was to come if the court didn’t regain its strength. That vigor was tied to the health and happiness of its leaders.

That would be Dialle and me. ‘Nuff said?

He didn’t even turn as I approached, though he couldn’t have failed to hear me coming. When I reached him, I touched his back, softly saying his name. His head turned slowly. A gentle smile curved his lips when he saw me. “Hello, my love.”

I looked beyond Dialle’s smile, to the dark pain in his black eyes. His eyes were his most changeable feature. When filled with vigor they swirled with gold and silver. When working for the celestial army they often changed to a clear, ocean blue. It was the feature prophesied for the great unifier. The royal who would eventually merge the dark and the light worlds to create a safe environment on Earth for non-magic humans and magic users alike. He’d realized that prophecy several times over, fighting at my side to beat back the forces of evil that would have destroyed us all. But looking at his handsome face in that moment, his black eyes swirling with a color that looked like blood, I wondered if the man I loved wasn’t facing the greatest evil of all.

An evil that came from within.

“How are you?”

He nodded and turned back to the window. “It’s beautiful isn’t it?”

Angel City spread across the horizon, glowing as if on fire under the burning sun that dipped below its ragged silhouette. Dusk hovered in the foreground, ready to mute the details of the skyline and embrace the lights that would paint its form once darkness fell. “Yes. I love this view. I always have.”

“Me too.” He shuddered slightly and turned away, pulling me into his arms. For the first time since I’d entered the throne room, he really looked at me. I knew the moment he turned away from his painful thoughts and embraced more pleasant things. His eyes swirled with the purple of passion rather than pain and his sad smile turned heated. “I’m glad you’re here. I’ve missed you.”

He said the words as if he hadn’t seen me in weeks. My heart took a painful twist and I gave in to the impulse to wrap him close in a hug. “I’ve missed you too, bud.”

The air shimmered and I was suddenly falling backward onto his soft, soft bed, a hot-eyed devil falling over me. I laughed. “You weren’t kidding.”

Since his smile had turned playful, the pain pushed away for the moment, I shoved my worry back and allowed myself to get lost in the pleasure of his touch, his taste and the exquisite feel of his long, hard body against mine.

Dialle’s leather-clad leg skimmed up mine, gently nudging my knees apart as his long-fingered hand covered the vee between my thighs. Heat and lust rolled together in a spiral that suffused me, turning my skin to fire and lifting my pulse until it beat a delighted staccato in my clit.

His beautiful lips found my throat and branded me with possessive heat. He lingered briefly over the place where his mark used to create a powerful link between us and I held my breath as his kisses stuttered…almost as if he’d just remembered it was gone.

But Dialle didn’t delay long, his sharp, white teeth nipped the spot and his tongue came out to lave it in a soothing swirl. I moaned at the jolt of awareness his playful caresses caused in my lower belly, where lust tightened almost painfully. I reached up and tugged his white shirt over one golden shoulder and, opening my lips, layered them over his fragrant skin and tasted him. My eyes dropped closed in ecstasy as his warm, masculine scent rolled through me, bringing my senses to life and infusing me with his powerful essence. I gave in to the urge to suck the delicious skin of his muscular shoulder and he moaned, nipping my throat in response.

“Too many clothes,” I murmured.

In a blink we were skin to skin, writhing against the bed. I might have lost my powers but Dialle still had his, and his ability to remove clothing with just a thought was one of his finer skills, in my humble opinion.

Dialle’s long, thick cock nudged my belly, and I opened for him, anxious to feel the wonderful pressure of his hard flesh inside me, stretching me wide and stroking delicious caresses over the pleasure center of my body.

Dialle dropped his head and placed a tender kiss on my breastbone, sliding a trail of heat over the mound of my breast and encompassing a perky nipple in moist heat. He sucked hard and the pleasure of it speared through me, taking my breath away.

I reached between us and wrapped his cock in my hand, stroking it in a firm grip and sliding my palm over the sensitive head with each caress. Dialle showed me his enjoyment by biting my breast before soothing it with his tongue and then moving to the other nipple.

Moisture touched my palm as I fondled him. The drop of pre-come lubricated my gliding strokes, allowing me to increase the pressure of my hand around his rigid shaft. Dialle groaned against my nipple and I arched into his mouth, desperate for the feel of his lips and teeth on my hungry skin.

My legs wrapped around him and I lifted my hips, pressing against his hard cock. “Make love to me, Dialle. Now. Please?”

~Excerpt~

On an ordinary late October morning, Judith Richardson tried to tune out the clocks ticking too loud beside the framed family photographs on the wall. Those were easier to ignore than the kitchen sink heaped with dishes she should be doing, and the stereo blasting out the music of her youth.

The doorbell rang. Judith thought it must be the mail carrier with a parcel or maybe the silly woman from two doors down who sometimes popped in to borrow something strange, a potato or a pencil, or once, a can of hair spray, so she didn't hurry. She plumped up the couch pillows as she passed and when she opened the door, she pasted on her phoniest smile. It faded the moment she saw who stood on her threshold, as nonchalant as if she'd seen him just days ago instead of years.

Her heart paused, the rhythm off beat, as she stared for a very long moment and then a real smile, wide and warmer than melted butter spread over her lips. She parted them to speak, to say something but no words came out. While she dithered, he came forward and she welcomed his embrace backing up so that he stood just inside, not out on the porch in view of the neighbors.

"Acushla," he breathed into her hair. "Judith, woman, it's grand to see you again."

"Eamon, is it really you?" Despite the solid feel of his familiar body against her own, she couldn't believe he was here. "I heard you were dead."

"Don't believe all you hear," Eamon O'Hara told her. "I've come for you."

That had been her desire for so long, that he would come after her, alive after all, but he'd arrived too late.

"Eamon, I'm married now with two children," Judith said, as her heart broke again into a thousand sharp shards. "I can't go with you."

"You're my wife."

That basic truth was far from simple. She nodded, struck silent by the pain radiating from her heart out into the rest of her body.

"Do you love me?" he asked.

Tears filled her eyes and she blinked them away, quick as if speed might conceal her emotion. Eamon shifted her position until their eyes met, his dancing black ones gazing into hers with powerful love. Then, before she could even think about stopping him, Eamon put his mouth to hers and she yielded, her body telling the truth her lips denied.

Prologue
Samhain 2008

“There’s too many of them!” Isabella cried out after a moment wasted in catching her breath. The dark ebony cloud of her hair was flung around her head in a wide arc as she whipped it around to look at her companion: her mate and husband, the father of her daughter, not to mention their son, whose impending existence they had only found out about a week ago. He guarded her back just as she guarded his in this fight, and together they were protecting the thing most precious to them both. “Jacob!”

The female Druid was forced to turn her back on her attackers as she saw that the odds she faced were nothing compared to his. No matter how strong and skilled she had become as a fighter over her years beside him, no matter how powerful an Earth Demon he was, they would never survive against such forces. Not alone. But Jacob would not relent.

He could not relent.

It was not only because they were the Enforcers and it was their duty to fight these foul aggressors with every last breath in their bodies. It was because their daughter, Leah, was secreted away only a few yards distant from the ground they currently defended. Jacob would sacrifice his last breath before he would see his family harmed. Isabella would do no less.

“Bella!”

Jacob reached for her between one smooth strike at the enemy and the next. He linked his arm through hers, and like the perfectly fitting cogs of a watch, she rotated over his back, her legs windmilling in dual strikes that stunned and stumbled enemies. When her feet hit the ground, she instantly stepped back so the heel of her left foot touched the heel of his right.

They braced themselves in that back-to-back position as the forces around them circled like vultures. Fortunately, both fighters knew that baser instincts would prevent these Transformed Demons from organizing themselves with intelligence, cunning, or strategy. The situation was critical enough with their bloodlust berserking; if they were to work in tandem, they would have a horrifying advantage.

Even as Bella struck a mark with a petite arm that packed far more punch than would be expected in one so small, Jacob spread his hands out parallel to the earth, his fingers curling as if they were burying into the soil that, in actuality, was a good four feet below the thick stone under their feet. Shattered quartz and rich loam spewed up toward those commanding hands, starting in one place and rapidly exploding in a circle around him and his wife until they were being swallowed by a perfect cylinder of dirt, rock, and debris.

Isabella wasn’t afraid when the ground caved in beneath her and the earth literally sealed its lips above her head and swallowed her up. She instantly dropped down into the chute of the tunnel being burrowed through the soil, her husband sliding swiftly beside her as they fell. Even though she could see and hear the rumble of clean fill collapsing above their heads almost as fast as they fell, she was not intimidated. On the contrary, she was relieved. The monsters above them could never catch them now. It was all Jacob; every grain and every pebble being manipulated around them was under her husband’s artful command. He was the most powerful Earth Demon alive. The oldest of his kind.

None of the Transformed Earth Demons above them could match the speed and accuracy Jacob used to manipulate the Earth around them, or the way the soil was repacked above them tighter than nature herself had originally done. Now their enemies would have to figure out how to find their way through tremendous amounts of earth in order to find them.

Finally they passed through what was once solid limestone before bursting out of the Demon-made tunnel and into a nature-made cavern. Jacob manipulated gravity so they landed gently on their feet, even giving Isabella an extra moonwalk bounce that made her laugh briefly in spite of their dire circumstances.

Then she turned sharply around to face her mate.

“The baby!”

“Easy,” her husband reassured her. “She’s just through the caverns. I pulled her down, too. What did you think I was going to do?” He reached out and swatted her backside as she hurried in the direction he had indicated. But despite the playful gesture and her smart look over her shoulder, they were both very aware that they weren’t safe yet. Granted, most of those above could not follow them, but some . . .

Some could.

“I pulled Jasmine into the caverns as well, but she’s hell and gone from here,” he warned his wife. “It’s going to take some time for her to reach us.”

Bella threw up a hand of acknowledgment, even though he already knew she had heard him and understood him. Understood they were on their own.

Isabella’s speed as she ran along the twisting corridor still amazed her. It had been six years since she had evolved from a human into a Druid, or rather, a hybrid of human and Druid. The power that had come with that alteration in her genetic makeup, including her ability to run with incredible speed, had been one of many blessings in her life since then. As she rounded a corner, she saw one of her blessings indignantly dusting off the soil the other blessing in Bella’s life had caused to get on her dress.

“Daddy, I’m dirty,” the five-year-old complained, the hands on her tiny hips and the jut of her lips all too reminiscent of her mother’s infamous gestures of pique. She completely disregarded the fact that she’d been in any danger.

“Sorry, angel,” Jacob apologized halfheartedly as he looked up toward the cavern ceiling, sensing the danger looming above them. “We have to make haste,” he said softly as he leaned in toward Bella’s ear.

Isabella was already scooping up her daughter as her husband’s hand fell into the small of her back to guide and hurry her.

“Mommy, I can walk,” Leah reminded her with her trademark stubborn independence, just as she always did when Isabella tried to carry her.

Of course, Leah let her father truck her around everywhere from dusk to dawn if that was his wish, and she never complained then, Isabella thought.

“Mommy is faster than you are, sweetheart, and we have to run,” Bella explained as she began to do just that.

She didn’t lose patience with her daughter’s distorted priorities. It wasn’t that Leah didn’t understand that there was peril around them, because she did. However, Leah had grown up watching her parents run into battle at the slightest threat to their home and homeland, their friends and family, or their monarch’s people. She was speaking like a child who wasn’t worried in the least about her safety because she knew her parents to be a mighty force, an undefeatable army of two that would never fail to protect her for as long as she lived.

There was a bursting change in the cavern’s air pressure, one that all three of them recognized; although in Leah’s experience, the force that created that sinus-snapping aftermath was always friendly. This one was not.

Isabella skidded to a halt, shoving her daughter behind herself so suddenly that Leah’s dress hit the dirt once more.

Bella and Jacob squared off to face the traitorous Demon Ruth, who had become a powerful enemy as she’d added potent necromancer magic to her already vast repertoire of ability as an Elder Mind Demon. It was she who had betrayed and Summoned the Transformed Demons Jacob and Isabella had left up above them, layers of earth and rock away.

Worse yet was the presence of the Vampire named Nicodemous, who now shared her power, just as he seemed to share her black magic abilities. Ruth had caused devastating death and destruction when she had defected, first with her daughter, and then, upon her daughter’s death, on her own. Now, mated to a Vampire of such age and avaricious might, she was an unfathomable force of evil.

They both were.

The only small thing in the Enforcers’ favor was that Ruth’s Transformed minions couldn’t immediately come to her aid. That wouldn’t last long, however.

Ruth only needed a moment of concentration before she could begin teleporting them down to her side a bucketful at a time.

Isabella refused to give her the advantage. The Druid released the tight rein she always kept on her ability to dampen the power of any Nightwalker. This was by far her most powerful ability, and it was also the most unpredictable and dangerous to her personally. She even forced herself to acknowledge the unknown damage it could do to the delicate fetus she carried.

But she didn’t see that she had a choice with the lives of the rest of her family at stake. Even with Jasmine on her way to back them up, the female Vampire was only one person, and it would take an army to defeat these two evil creatures if their powers remained intact. They had learned much about how to use them over these past few years. And it was only going to get worse. Bella and Jacob had to strike now, while they had a chance. And besides, the traitorous bitch was coming after her child. Bella would see to it Ruth paid for even daring to think about touching Leah. Damn the painful consequences she might suffer. If Bella didn’t do something, they all would die anyway.

Clearly Jacob felt the same, or he would have volubly protested her impending actions through the telepathic link they shared with one another. He knew what potential harm there was to his wife, but while he’d argued against it in the past on many occasions, there was no time to argue now.

And so she opened herself to the dangerous unknown and drew it into her vulnerable mind and body. Bella had absorbed the power of a female Mind Demon before, but nothing like this blackness of soul. It was sucked harshly into her like acrid ammonia.

She had taken the power of a corrupted Vampire before. He had stolen the lives of other Nightwalkers, gathering their power into himself through the drinking of their blood. But she knew instantly that this Vampire was tainted well beyond that, the stain of necromancer magic on his soul as well. It was like imbibing a double dose of pure, liquid evil. She felt the cloying blackness of dual channels of power from the twin sources; they seeped into her like thick oil and tar. The evil twisted together inside her, suffocating her from the inside out. Her eyes, normally a beautiful violet color, blacked over and she looked down at herself to see pitch liquid oozing out of her skin. She did not realize the vision was only in her own mind.

Jacob felt his mate scream in horror long before she actually found the voice for it. He saw what she saw, just as he knew her every waking thought every moment of the day. He knew she was seeing a hallucination, and he couldn’t help the instinct that had him leaping into her mind to convince her of what was real and what was not. He whirled around to catch her in a single strong arm as she lurched in a back-arching seizure.

Leah watched with wide, frightened eyes as her mother was flung backward by an unseen force. Her young heart leapt into her throat as her father spun to catch her mother, the long brown-black tail of his hair whipping like that of an agitated horse. She felt her heart seize fitfully with incomprehension as she watched him quickly ease his beloved wife to the ground as gently as he could, considering the violent contortions of her body.

That was all the time it took for the enemy behind him to strike.

It was the Vampire that moved. Leah watched, paralyzed with shock and fear as he reached with blinding speed into his long, dark coat, grabbing for something that looked sharp and deadly. Even Leah’s immature Demon senses could smell the sudden tang of rusted iron, the poisonous metal that was deadly to Demons.

A moment later the Vampire leapt onto her father’s turned back and drove the iron spike between rear ribs and shoulder blade.

Leah watched as if through someone else’s eyes as the spike burst through her father’s chest, spearing him straight through the heart. The inconceivable sight of her sire’s blood exploding out of his chest was nothing compared to seeing him fall to his knees in total shock, his face full of outrage and a clear frustration that only those who loved him would understand. Jacob looked up into his little girl’s violet eyes, so like her mother’s, and felt his failure to protect his family so sharply that the last sound to leave him was a keening cry of utter remorse.

Then he fell forward onto her mother, the last exhale of his breath echoing in the suddenly silent cavern.

“Daddy!”

Leah screamed for her father as the Vampire reached to yank him off her mother, baring his fangs. He hissed and then threw Jacob away so violently that Leah heard her father hit the near wall with a sickening smack.

Chapter One

My head snapped to the side, vision blurring as my eyes watered from the shock. Pain radiated from the site of impact on my jaw. The bruiser in front of me had managed to sneak in a cheap shot. The bastard probably expected me to slide into psycho chick mode right about now and flail my arms around in the air hoping for purchase. Maybe rake my nails over his cheek in the typical female defense. But I had another ace up my sleeve.

I was no helpless damsel in distress.

His calloused knuckles clenched into a fist again and just as he lunged for me once more, I clamped my fingers around his hand, stopping all of his forward movement. His startled look said it all. He hadn’t expected me to fight back this way. Hadn’t expected this unassuming woman would actually to stand up to him.

He obviously wasn’t used to having women fighting back.

He was threatening the patrons of my club, the ones that put their trust in me when they entered through these doors, leaving their daily lives behind. I was simply upholding that unspoken promise. His face took on a blotchy red tone as he struggled to rip his hand away from mine. He wasn’t aware of it, but the more he fought, the easier he was making it for me to dislike him even more. To make me feel absolutely no remorse for what I was going to do.

I pulled on his hand, drew it down to waist level and held it there. Something inside of me unfurled then, flashing instantly hot as I held his hand still. I could feel it unwinding after having been tightly coiled and secured for as long as I could remember. Its warmth feeling old and familiar, reminding me of something I was unaware I was missing. I’d forgotten this part of me and it was hard to contain it now that it was making itself aware again. Safety for those around me was at the forefront of my mind and even though I was raging inside at the insipid man in front of me, I reined myself in. Losing total control wasn’t an option right now. Too many innocents, ones that could easily get hurt, were around. I wasn’t going to have that hanging over my head.

I unleashed just a single thin thread of my control and the overweight man dropped to his knees, the presence of fear in his eyes obvious as he stared up at me. Having unlocked that hidden side of me made me feel alive and very much in power. Of myself. Of the one lowered to bended knee before me. I saw in his eyes an emotion that I alone had caused.

Fear.

There was a surge of intoxicating power knowing that and I could easily surrender to it if I let myself.

His cobalt blue eyes were wide as he looked up at me, his black pupils growing so wide there was only a thin thread of the blue remaining at the rim. A quiet pain spread out from where my skin pressed against his and I pulled back, withdrawing the essence of myself, knowing that he had gotten the message loud and clear. My club, my rules and I wasn’t about to take any of his bullshit here.

“Take it somewhere else,” I spat at him and dropped his useless arm like a hot poker fresh out of the fire. I didn’t want to touch him anymore and from the way the rest of the crowd was giving him a wide berth as he rose, they didn’t either. After what he had just attempted to do, did you blame them?

I folded the power swelling inside of me, ignoring its demands to be released after having gotten a taste of the freedom I rarely ever granted. It was better for everyone around me.

Safer.

The bouncer who worked the door outside swept in to manhandle the bulky offender out the door and I gave the over-muscled employee I hired three years ago a dismissive look. He knew I wasn’t pleased to have to handle the delinquent myself and that he would have to face me later. It wasn’t a prospect that he was looking forward to, judging by the way he averted his gaze from mine as he pushed the once unruly patron out the door.

Good, he should be wary of me. I was pissed that I had been left to do the dirty work for which I had specifically hired massively muscled men to do, even though I was perfectly capable of handling it myself. That wasn’t the point. I employed them for a reason. The patrons of the club counted on it and the happier they were, the more they became repeat customers whose money I gladly took. Right now, this particular employee wasn’t any better to me than a six year old throwing a tantrum when his comic books had been taken away. When I was done with him tomorrow, he would wish for unlimited regeneration abilities like those comic book heroes. Especially, once I ripped him a new asshole.

The crowd that remained parted as I worked my way back to the bar, sliding my hand over my jaw where the goon had cold-cocked me. I knew that everyone’s gaze was following me and it wouldn’t do to let them know that I wasn’t feeling a lick of pain. In their eyes, I was just as human as they were. No need to let the secret out now.

Lucas’s gaze met mine as I arrived at the bar and I reached for the shot of tequila he’d set out for me. Good to know we were on the same wave length. I turned, facing the crowd and sent all the customers I could see in the dim light of the dance club a beaming smile. One that reassured them that this was the place to party and we, as the club management team, had their best interests in mind. “Síoraí, the bar is open and a free round of drinks for everyone!” I downed the shot and welcomed the familiar burn as the aged wood taste slid down my throat and ignited a warm smolder inside of me. It didn’t compare to the feeling from earlier but it made me smile just the same. A flush tinted my cheeks from the heat and I slammed the small glass down on the counter as a signal that the show was over.

A roar went up from the crowd and they surged forward, screaming their orders as the bartenders burst into a flurry of activity. My employees were going to hate me for that statement, but it would keep most of them busy for a while as they attended to the requests.

I made my way to the far end of the bar, away from the crush of patrons waiting for their free booze and settled onto the barstool I had been occupying before the commotion had erupted. My cigarette still burned red hot in the ashtray and I lifted it to my mouth for a grateful drag. The smoke curled through my lungs as I inhaled and closed my eyes, savoring the relaxation that washed over me after such a chaotic few moments.

Why were people so idiotic? Just when you thought that society had taken its last step forward on the path of stupidity, someone did something that broadened the walkway instead to throw them back decades in advancement. The jerk I had just thrown out was obviously drunk and full of himself. Alcohol did that to people--gave them balls that they didn’t normally possess. I glanced over at the woman who had been the object of the drunkard’s sloppy advances and saw her hand flutter nervously as she downed a shot of something neon green in a test tube. Tonight, alcohol would give her the courage to stay here instead of escaping to her apartment to hide from what happened.

By tomorrow, her life would be back to normal. The incident forgotten behind a layered haze of alcohol.

She would be alright but he would still be an asshole.

A bag of frozen peas was tossed onto the bar in front of me and ruined the thought I had been mulling about humanity eventually redeeming itself. I scowled at Lucas when my eyes found him standing on the other side of the bar, looking intently at me.

“Don’t you have customers to serve?” I asked, not bothering to smother my annoyance that he was talking to me instead.

He flashed me an easy smile and began using a towel to wipe out the beer glasses that he had just taken from the dishwasher. His electric blue eyes held a mischievous gleam that was obvious even in the dark of the club. “Rest of the crew has it handled and you looked like you needed a reminder.”

“Of?” I wasn’t sure what he meant.

He slid the glass he had been drying onto the overhead shelf and leaned over to me as the music started pounding through the speakers once more. The crowd had already moved on from the little show they had watched and wanted to continue dancing the night away. Eager to leave their daily fears, reservations and doubts about the things that go bump in the night at the door and have a few hours of fun. “A reminder that a delicate woman such as yourself will have a very bruised jaw right about now from the meaty fist of a certain unruly patron.” He nudged the bag of frozen vegetables in front of me and gave me a speculative look.

“Shit.” I pressed the icy bag against the side of my hurt jaw and winced at the temperature against my warm skin. I’d obviously forgotten what I had just been acutely aware of just moments ago when I walked through the crowd. Posing as a human can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes. “Thanks.”

He nodded as his eyes scanned over the sea of bobbing heads on the dance floor. The club was crowded tonight, somewhat unusual for a Wednesday night. Seems there was a slew of people wanting to start their weekend early and decided that my establishment was the place to be. The more of them, the more money for me. You certainly won’t find me complaining about those that lined my pockets.

The influx of customers had led to the disturbance that occurred earlier. Mix booze with the sexual heat that was usually generated in this type of dance club and someone was bound to get randy occasionally. One thing I didn’t stand for, and widely known for in Cincinnati, was tolerance for idiocy. You show the least little bit of indiscretion on my property and you’d find yourself the owner of one foot up your ass kicking you to the curb.

Síoraí was known as a safe haven where you were free to let your imagination roam as you left the stress of your everyday life behind. I wasn’t about to let that change for some jerk who didn’t want to keep his dick in his pants.

Lucas brushed at the few locks of black hair that fell over his brow as he leaned toward me. His lurid grin was especially potent tonight and I worried what he had up his sleeve. There was always something up Lucas’s sleeve. “You’ve got an admirer.”

I followed Lucas’s playful gaze and saw what he meant when the sea of dancers parted and a lone man sat at one of the tables on the other side of the club. I snorted when I spotted him and rolled my eyes as I turned back to Lucas. “He probably just wants another drink,” I said in reference to the empty glass I saw the man spinning around on the table top, leaving condensation rings on the stained wood tabletop.

It was Lucas’s turn to snort. “I know that look anywhere. Hell, I’ve given it to many a woman and his mind is not on his drink, I assure you.”

“Would that be the same look the blonde over there is currently giving you?” I waved a finger in the direction of where a slim, petite woman was waiting patiently for Lucas to refill her glass. She appeared anxious for him to return and swayed in time to the music in invitation.

As if Lucas Edwards needed one.

“That would be an entirely different look.” He tapped his knuckles in front of me before moving off. “You’ve got company heading toward you.”

I turned my head slightly to watch with seeming disinterest, letting my eyes scan over the crowd of patrons on the dance floor. With the closer look, I realized the man pushing his way through the undulating crowd was familiar. Men scowled at him while women gave him inviting smiles.

You couldn’t blame them really. Even outfitted in a sharply cut midnight gray three piece suit you could see he had chiseled his body with hours of hard workouts. You couldn’t help but appreciate the apparent effort that it obviously took to look the way he did. Dark blond hair cut in the latest version of what the elite considered fashionable and gray eyes that hid nothing of their intent. Of course, considering who he was, looks played an important part of the aura that seemingly hovered all around him. Despite the appreciative ogles he was receiving from various women on the dance floor, he smiled politely and continued moving through the crowd in seeming dismissal.

Sights set elsewhere, he wasn’t interested in them.

Working until closing of the club each night meant that I was usually planted in front of the television for a few hours before falling asleep. This, of course, meant that the only form of entertainment was the late night tabloid shows about people I couldn’t care less about. It was either digital snow or you spent the time learning a whole lot of information about people who spent their time thinking they were better than the rest of us.

The man currently working his way across my packed dance floor was Stark Grantham. A regular favorite of the paparazzi hounds and gossip shows.

Since I had a habit of following media reports, not to mention my stupid affinity for watching the shows as I fell asleep at night, I knew that he wasn’t a man who took a lot of bullshit. I knew he even considered himself to be one of the finest at scenting when he was being fed a line. Top notch, in fact. That was why he didn’t have time to be bothered with trivial matters in his life. Not that I couldn’t say that I blamed him.

I could be the same way myself.

I also knew he was an adrenaline junkie. Name it and the enigmatic Mr. Grantham had partaken in the adventure. He was known to spend winters in France barreling down the slopes, be it strapped to a snowboard or a pair of skis. His summers, throwing himself out of a plane eighteen thousand feet over Monterey Bay. A smoker and a drinker, he was the epitome of indulgence. The seven deadly sins had nothing on him or at least that’s what the tabloids wanted all of the normal citizens who lead exceedingly boring lives in comparison to believe.

I highly respected his devil may care attitude because I once spent my life searching for the latest and greatest things to suit my exotic tastes as well. Now, I did my best to blend into the crowd. Except when it came to my hair, there were no compromises in that area of my life. There was no way to ignore this blindingly red mass of hair, even in its dulled state. If they only knew the truth about how it really looked, but there was nothing wrong with keeping them guessing.

In one of the few interviews Stark had given to the news magazines, he had insisted that he wasn’t content to settle in one place long enough to see dust develop on the furnishings. He believed that those in search of the ultimate high didn't have the patience for the simple things in life. He had recently settled in Cincinnati to expand his business, no doubt with plans already in place, to move when he was ready.

See? Told you, it was easy to find out all you never wanted to know about someone just by watching trash television. Don’t say it never taught you anything. Despite knowing as much as I did on the surface about Stark, I never would have imagined that he’d be sitting in my club, let alone working his way through to crowd to the packed bar.

Heading for me.

In my eyes, I was no one. A dance club owner who did her best to cater to the needs of her clientele and tried to keep up with the latest and greatest techno beats. Of course, much like I knew about Stark Grantham on the outside, the dance club owner I described was merely what I wanted others to see of me.

What very few people, the count currently being contained to only one other than myself, knew was that I was a guardian for the Tuatha Dé Danann. I was here amongst the humans, following my assignment to ensure that he didn’t fuck up. That assignment being Quinn O'Brien, but he was far from a screw up. About as far removed from it as you can get in fact, but that didn’t mean he didn’t need someone watching over his shoulder. He had been our High King until about four hundred and fifty years ago. A deal had been struck and here I sat.

Bored out of my freaking mind.

Quinn wasn’t exactly the most exciting assignment I had ever partaken. Though, I shouldn’t complain too loudly because his seeming affinity for holing himself up at his ranch certainly afforded me a large amount of free time in order to pursue my interests here.

My interest right now was Stark since he was in my club. What brought him here to my meager neck of the woods? Despite my owning the club, I was a no one in the eyes of society. I was quite happy with that arrangement. The further under the radar I was, the better.

From what I could tell judging by the interested gleam in eyes the color of angry storm clouds, he was stalking his prey. I probably should have felt scandalized.

Notice I said should.

I smiled to myself and shifted my focus from the approaching man, signaling to Lucas. The young looking bartender shot a winning smile to the patron he was serving and nodded as an indication he would be over in a minute. As I watched, his every movement was focused on the girl on the other side of the counter. If I didn’t know his tastes better, I would say that Lucas had just picked his mark for the night. I was still of the opinion that she was a little too blonde for him and just as I suspected, the woman slunk off to join her friends at a nearby table, very much alone and with no prospect of a night of adventure--invitation rejected.

I tapped the ashes off my cigarette before taking a drag, wondering why I continued to bother smoking in the first place. I raised an eyebrow as Lucas came my way with a glass of tonic in his hand. He feigned a look of innocence as he set the drink in front of me and gestured for a hit off my cigarette. He apparently didn’t wonder why he smoked. Not that either of us had to worry about the side effects of smoking.

“She was a bit young for you,” I said as I handed him the cigarette. I had a strict rule that the bartenders couldn’t smoke on shift. Prior to that enforcement, most of them had a tendency to stretch that quick break in the alley into something longer. All this loud music, sexual tension and alcohol tended to make the staff’s minds wander and I’d found them getting all hot and bothered with each other out in the back alley during those supposed smoke breaks and on more than one occasion. Sex on the clock between employees was not a way to drum up business. I made a concession for him however as he just wanted one hit. Plus he was the closest thing to a best friend I had here and the one person that knew the full truth about me.

“I did nothing but make her enjoy the wait time for her drink.” His angelic face was the picture of innocence, but I knew better. There was a beast that regularly prowled and insisted on being unleashed occasionally. I knew all about that myself despite our marked differences.

“So, you didn’t say anything about how you’d like to entertain her after you got off shift? How you could really--what was it I heard you tell me once, ah yes--sink your teeth into her?” While that was normally an advantageous prospect from a man with Lucas’s good looks, most unsuspecting females didn’t realize that he meant it literally because he was just as immortal as I am. He was one of those things that went bump in the night, but unlike me, Lucas was a vampire.

“Well, there was that.” He grinned, waggling his eyebrows a little as he let his thoughts show clearly on his face. He had fully intended to taste that girl in more ways than one. The rest of the female species better be on the lookout for him tonight as he was apparently very full of himself. Not that that wasn't the norm for him, but tonight he seemed particularly interested in sating his hunger for the female of the species. I wondered if he was back on human blood because he certainly seemed to be a little more careless than he usually was.

I pushed the little niggling thought to the side because it wasn’t my business and felt the need to rib Lucas about the obvious. “She wasn’t your type.”

“Neither is he.” I followed Lucas’s glance and saw that Stark had finally made his way through the crowd and would be near us with a few quick strides. I took a drag off the cigarette Lucas had returned to me before moving off to fill drink orders and met Stark’s knowing gaze as he approached.

He flashed me a casual smile as he leaned on the bar and nodded his head in greeting. I nodded in return, swallowing the last of my tonic water, my throat gone dry with the taste of anticipation of actually talking to the one and only daredevil CEO of Stark Grantham Incorporated.

“You look like you could use something stiffer inside you.”

My amused mood blackened instantly as my expectations went up in flames. Now if that wasn’t just the cheesiest damn line I had ever heard in my life. And owning this club, I had heard them all, believe me. Maybe the seedy tabloid news programs had painted him as they wanted to, rather than showing he was nothing more than a jerk with a large bank account. Maybe they had wanted him to be something he wasn’t simply because he looked so good in that suit and had the balls to throw himself off the highest mountain just for the thrill. I rolled my eyes, disappointed in myself because I had been so off and muttered under my breath. “Go away, asshole.”

Stark obviously wasn’t easily swayed and signaled to Lucas. The bartender poured a few drinks before moving to take Stark’s order. “What can I get for you?”

I could hear the hint of amusement in Lucas’s voice and silently cursed him. He was enjoying himself way too much.

Stark held up two fingers and set his empty glass on the bar in front of him. “Same as what I was having.”

Lucas shot me a lurid grin and I resisted the urge to flip him off. Two shots of tequila were set down on the countertop between the two of us and Lucas quickly disappeared, interested in seeing if someone else needed help with their liquor order.

Traitor.

Stark palmed one of the shot glasses while he slid the other closer to me. “Wasn’t a line, if that’s what you’re thinking. Saw you sitting here sucking down water and you looked like you needed something with a bit more muscle to it. Especially after watching you level that overgrown child.”

I was fairly certain there was a hint of admiration in that last statement. My annoyance eased a little and I decided I’d been a little harsh. First impressions could be wrong after all. I smiled genially and nodded, tapping my cigarette against the glass ashtray. “Good, because that would have been one hell of a lousy greeting if it had been a line.” I pushed the tequila glass away, back toward where Stark had set his empty one. “I can’t, I’m working.”

“Which is exactly why you should.” He shoved the short glass back and gave me a look that was almost challenging. Obviously he had seen me take the shot of tequila earlier upon declaring the bar was open. That had been directly related to work and wasn’t something I would normally do. Given the circumstances, and never one to back down from an issued challenge, I downed the liquid, welcoming the hot burn that came when I swallowed. I turned the shot glass over as I placed it back on the bar. He cocked an eyebrow in approval and signaled for two more.

“Name’s Stark and I’d like to buy you another round,” he said, leaning both arms against the bar and gave me a view that I couldn’t ignore.

Yeah, the rear view was just as tantalizing as the front. That was something the tabloid magazine had gotten right.

Dammit.

I mentally shook off my momentary lapse into libido land and reminded myself that I had responsibilities. I could admire Stark from afar but that was about all I could offer for the moment. “Ana Sullivan. I’d like to, Stark, but as I said, I’m working. I appreciate the offer though.” I could see the disappointment on his face, the annoyance that darkened the color of his eyes a little. I wasn’t going to let it sway me though, however attractive I thought he was. “Maybe another time.”

“Tomorrow night works for me. You?” I started to open my mouth in rejection and he shook his head with a knowing smile. “Let me guess. Working, right?”

I nodded my head in confirmation as I picked at an errant black thread on my shirt. Must have picked it up during the scuffle, the jerk had been wearing head to toe black. As if it had made him cooler in some respect. Black was for burglars, emo Goth wannabes and for getting laid. Period. “In fact, I’m working every night.”

“Well, you certainly are one hard working woman, aren’t you?” Stark said appreciatively.

“You have no idea,” Lucas chimed in as he offered two more shots of tequila despite my protests. “Ana wouldn’t know the meaning of a night off if it bit her on that very firm ass.”

I shot a look of disdain in Lucas’s direction and he slunk off with a wide grin on his face, obviously amused with himself. Stark’s laughter sounded in my ear and he smothered it quietly when I gave him the same look. I pushed the shot of liquor away and ground out my cigarette in the ashtray.

Standing, I pushed the barstool out from under me with my foot and offered my hand to Stark. Despite the fact that I was enjoying the view of the man in front of me, I had customers to think about. Work was work after all and I still had bills to pay. “Running the club takes most of my time. Unfortunately, I don’t have much of a social life.” That statement was a complete and utter lie stretched to the limit bullshit. While the staff did most of the duties for me and I had other obligations here other than to watch over Quinn, there was an enormous amount of free time on my hands. It wouldn’t do to let him know that at this early stage of the game.

I was Fae, not a fool.

His hand slid easily into mine and you’d have to be an idiot to deny the spark of heat that ignited between us as our hands met. The gray of his eyes shifted and I saw a flash of dark that I appreciated. He made no effort to cover his disappointment, to mask the thoughts that had been racing through his mind in those few seconds. He was an open book in that moment and something inside me gave a hitch of anticipation and appreciation. I could easily see the two of us falling into bed.

He noticed the effect of our hands meeting too and one side of his mouth quirked up in amusement. “Are you sure about that?”

There was no doubt in my mind what his intentions were should I actually accept his offer. I can’t say that the thought didn’t intrigue me on some level. You had to be dead not to appreciate a man with his sort of looks, especially when the intentions were aimed directly at you. However, I was exceedingly careful about whose bed I frequented. I had never been the type to let my hormones rule my world, not to mention there were certain things that I needed to be careful of. Being Fae may have had its advantages but there were disadvantages as well especially in my case. Still, I was flattered. “Are you asking me out?”

“There would be dinner, of a sort, involved, so yes--a date if you will.”

I narrowed my eyes at him, taking in his expensive tailored suit, the fine Italian leather shoes he was wearing. There were some things that a woman, even a Fae, knew. “I’m fairly certain that I’m not your type, Mr. Grantham.”

A charming smile lit up the devilish expression on his face. “What makes you so sure of that?”

Damn, he was handsome.

Looks aside, my affinity for the cheap, sleazy tabloid shows had not only shown me the good about Stark, but the bad as well. I knew what was behind that deceptive smile. Judging from the revolving stream of women he used as arm candy, each and every one I had seen were the polar opposite of me. I couldn’t care less about what fashions were currently walking the runways and how quickly I could get my hands on them. I was happier frequenting the thrift store a few blocks away than throwing my money away on the latest overpriced fashions. Waste of time and resources in my opinion, especially at my age. We aren’t even going to discuss my true age. In human years, I’m hellaciously old. Thankfully I didn’t look a day over thirty-one. Twenty-nine on a good day when I actually bothered to fuss with make-up and a dress. Right now, my jeans and crisp white shirt suited me just fine. Dressing up had never been my forte. Even before I had found myself amongst humans.

Just at that moment, a bleached blonde that was all tits and ass, wearing a black clingy scrap of material that left little to the imagination folded herself around Stark. She trailed a finger over the gentle curve of his ear and flashed a smile at him that spoke of the night she had obviously planned--one that involved getting both of them horizontal as soon as possible.

Hell, if she looked at me like that, said those things I overheard, I’d do her. The look she did give me wasn’t as friendly as the one she had given Stark. In fact, it was one of those distasteful glares that said she wanted me as far away as possible. She obviously had her claws already firmly, deeply seated under Stark’s skin and saw me as an annoyance. Ms. Fake and Bake didn’t seem to care that she was obviously the flavor of the moment. She was going to take what she could get from what I could see.

I arched an eyebrow at Stark and smirked. His eyes met mine and though he wasn’t apologetic, the intent I had glimpsed earlier was gone. “I rest my case,” I said before I moved off, leaving the two of them to whatever they had planned for the night. Despite my dismissal, I felt his eyes watching me as I disappeared through the moving crowd. I felt those eyes follow me all the way up the stairs until I disappeared through my office. The door shut behind me with a soft click and the soundproofing of the room shut out the pounding beat that drove the crowd on the dance floor below. My back contacted with the wood and I smiled into the dark of my office.

That was not the last I would see of Stark Grantham, I knew that without question. He was curious enough to return, to see if he could learn more about the woman who was convinced she wasn’t his type.

Twilight's Embrace by Ericka Scott
Chapter One

“Welcome to Temperance,” Victoria said as she watched Friday night regular, Mitchell Consuelo, guide his date into the brightly lit foyer of the club. For once, Mitch didn’t seem to be in a hurry to drag his date inside. Instead, he hovered at the woman’s elbow as they checked their coats and then wandered around the reception area looking at the period artwork on the walls.

It had been a long time since Victoria had browsed through the lobby. She’d almost forgotten what a novelty the pictures were. Mixed in with the history of Temperance were historical pictures of the vampires who worked in the club. Hell, if anyone ever looked close enough at the picture of the grand opening in 1899, they’d recognize her standing right in front, her face shadowed by a huge calico bonnet.

Mitch’s appearance at the podium with his curvaceous date interrupted her reverie.

Victoria tipped her head so that her blonde pageboy haircut swung forward. Then she smiled knowing her fangs sparkled in the light from the overhead chandelier. “Will you be dining with us this evening?” she asked.

The woman looked up at Mitch, her eyes wide, and then she giggled.

“Come on, it’ll be fun,” Mitch encouraged her. To Victoria’s knowledge, he’d only had one date flee before he’d gotten her inside. This luscious brunette looked too curious to flee.

Victoria dragged her eyes away from the man’s date; Mitch, however, was still ogling the woman’s breasts.

Okay, enough already. “Membership card, please,” Victoria prompted.

Mitch jumped and fumbled in the pocket of his suit coat. He pulled out the stiff card and started to hand it to her.

“Oh, what’s that? It’s really pretty,” Mitch’s date asked.

“That’s our membership card,” Victoria informed her, handing her the card. “As you might know, Temperance was a Speakeasy during prohibition. The tradition of using the tarot card for admittance began, as the owner’s wife, Jezebel Twilight, was a well-known psychic. While she gave readings in the dining room, drinks and hors d’oeuvres would be served in the private rooms away from prying eyes and the surveillance of the police.”

“How interesting.” The woman handed the card back over. “But I didn’t realize this was a membership club.” She turned to Mitch, and her voice held a suspicious edge to it. “You told me you hadn’t ever been here before.”

While Mitch reassured his date with some stammering excuse, Victoria resisted the urge to roll her eyes. The man was such a lying bastard. Hell, he was here every Friday night with a different woman. While the couple bickered, Victoria lounged against the podium. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a flash of movement. Odd.

Turning, she saw nothing suspicious and only heard a quiet murmur of voices coming from the bar. From where she was standing, she could see her business partner, Maxine Twilight, mingling with customers. The petite redhead was all curves and class, and Victoria had lusted after her for years. Unfortunately, Maxine was straight. What a waste.

Dragging her attention back to the clientele, she conjured up a sexy smile for Mitch and his date. Reaching under the podium, she handed a heavy leather folder across the podium to the woman. “Would you like to examine the menu?”

Still giggling, the woman took the proffered folder and opened it. The first picture she’d see was the ‘Boris Karloff’ head shot followed by a tasty array of half nude body shots.

“Oh.” The woman made an appreciative sound and her eyes widened. She flipped the page. The ‘Vincent Price’ page showed the headshot of an all-American blond-haired god. His body shots were good enough to eat right off the paper. The facing page was the Van Helsing page, six hunky men for when a ménage a trois just wasn’t tempting enough.

The woman looked up at Victoria. “Which would you recommend?”

Victoria opened her mouth to reply but instead heard a funny whistling sound. Just as the meaning of what she was hearing sunk in, she was struck in the back.

* * * * *

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Zachary Fox counted the cash in the envelope. A mere five thousand dollars. It didn’t come close to matching his usual price for a hit. However, it was clear there would be no more money forthcoming. This was all the cash the city of Poduncksville, Ohio, had in their pest control budget.

Pests? He shook his head. He’d had a bad feeling about taking this job, but had felt sorry for the town mayor who had been unable to find any other slayer willing to take on the job for that amount. The situation was dire. Rogue vampires had taken and turned two young girls. Then, the vampires had used the children to lure in family members for the vampires to feed upon.

After Zach performed his duty, disposing of all four vampires, he’d hoped they’d come up with a bit more cash, especially in light of the bruises, the black eye, and the cracked tailbone he’d suffered. However, this was it.

Damn, at this rate, he’d have to work three or four more jobs before he could retire. The colorful brochure propped open on top of his suitcase spelled it all out. Alaska, the land of the midnight sun. Even better, according to the advertisement, a land free of vampires. Zach wasn’t such a sucker that he believed everything he read. For in the winter, the darkness was unbroken for just as many hours. Darkness that would be a haven for the undead.

Hell, maybe he’d just go there anyway. Just for a change. He was tired. Real tired of nursing bruises and broken bones, late night trips to the hospital for stitches. Staying in cheap hotel rooms smelling of stale cigarette smoke and sex had become boring. He was especially tired of secretive meetings with petrified town council members and public citizens. Until society acknowledged vampires’ existence and held the undead accountable to the same laws as the living, nothing would change.

Along with the proliferation of the undead, there was now a whole new crop of slayers. Young, buff guys who healed faster. Zach grimaced. The scar on his arm, a parting gift from one of those young slayers turned vampire, ached. It was a ragged wound that had never healed properly, and he hoped it wasn’t infected. If it was, he had pain pills and antibiotics galore from his many trips to the emergency room. When he got home, he’d just pop a few milligrams of penicillin to be on the safe side.

With one last look around the gaudily decorated room, where even the large black rotary telephone was chained to the wall, he tucked the brochure in his back pocket, picked up his suitcase in one hand and his slayer equipment bag with the other. At that moment, he noticed a white envelope slid half under the door.

Well, this was the first time he’d ever stayed in a cheap hotel that provided a bill for checkout before he’d even notified management of his impending departure.

He put everything down and bent over to pick up the envelope, then jumped when the phone on the wall rang. Should he answer it or not? No one knew he was here. Even the men who had hired him didn’t know where he was staying or even what his real name was. Hoping it was either the hotel management or a wrong number, Zach let the phone ring. When it finally fell silent, he looked down at the envelope in his hand.

What the hell? It was addressed to him. There was no return address, just a postmark from Chicago. There was only one person he’d known in Chicago, and she wasn’t in any position to be sending him anything anymore. That left the conclusion that this was about another job. He pulled out his pocket knife and slit open the envelope. Inside was a tarot card. Temperance. He flipped it over and back. It was pretty, but didn’t mean anything to him.

With a shrug, he tucked the envelope in his back pocket where it made intimate contact with the brochure from Alaska. Looked like he might just be heading for The Windy City.

He picked up his bags. Then, as if to torment him, the phone rang again. Thinking it might have something to do with the tarot card, he put everything back down and picked up the receiver.

“Hello?”

The voice that answered him was hollow and echoed eerily as if traveling from the other side of the grave. “Zach?”

Shit. He cloaked his travels in secrecy, used a fake name, and she still found him.

“Hello, Tessa.” He grimaced, waiting for the tirade to start.

“How are you?”

“Cut the bullshit. What do you want?” Zach sighed and looked at his watch. He’d had high hopes that once Tessa was dead, he would no longer have to deal with her, especially as she was no longer eligible to collect alimony.

“I need a favor, Zach.”

When Zach didn’t answer, there was an odd silence. At first he thought they’d been disconnected, and he could escape this conversation. He’d just begun to think about hanging up when he heard an odd sound.

A sniff? Then, Tessa’s voice came back on the line. “You owe me this, Zach. I need you to come to Chicago.”

So, this was about the tarot card after all. Zach still hesitated. It was true he did owe Tessa. However, she’d always assured him it was a debt she’d never collect.

“I thought this was water under the bridge, and you were happy with the way it turned out. You said you’d forgiven me.”

“I did; I do. But I still need this favor. Please.” Tessa’s voice sounded odd. It almost sounded as if she were crying.

Did the undead cry?

* * * * *

Maxine heard a stifled scream and turned toward the sound. At the front desk, a couple stood staring at the spot where Victoria had been just moments ago. Then the man looked up, took a deep breath, and screamed like a girl.

What a nightmare.

In her mind, Maxine had prepared for this eventuality. She’d envisioned herself closing and locking the doors, calmly instructing the staff to conduct a swift and quiet search for the slayer, then she, personally, would dispose of the slayer, and the party would continue, so to speak.

Well, things didn’t exactly go as planned.

First off, Mitch’s caterwauling at the sight of the pile of ashes attracted everyone’s attention. Then, more people began screaming as they realized what had occurred. Vampires fled into the dark recesses of Temperance, and living patrons fled for the street. Thank the gods no one had been trampled in the pandemonium. Unfortunately, it looked like the slayer, whoever he or she was, had escaped.

Sorrow welled up inside her when she thought about Victoria, but she bit her bottom lip and carried on.

“I’ve called the police.” Jimmy, her brother, walked up behind her.

“And?” Maxine asked, although she knew full well what the answer would be.

“They pretty much said ‘good riddance’,” Jimmy replied.

“You’re surprised?”

“No, I guess not.” Jimmy shrugged and picked up a rag. “I had just hoped that since Temperance was a Chicago landmark that someone would be concerned.”

“The undead have no rights, Jimmy. But believe me, if one of the living patrons had been murdered here tonight, the place would be crawling with cops.”

“Maxine?” A tall, thin brunette woman interrupted.

Maxine looked up. It was Tessa, one of her newly hired employees. “Everything is under control, Tessa. No need to be worried.”

Tessa shot her an impatient look. “Could I speak to you…alone?”

“Sure.” Maxine gave her brother an apologetic look, but he just smiled and sauntered away in the direction of his apartment in the back. She turned her attention to Tessa and silently prayed the pretty vampire wasn’t going to turn in her resignation.

“I’m so sorry, we’ve never had a slayer invade Temperance, and I can assure you—”

Tessa held up a hand to interrupt her. “I’m the one who needs to tell you I’m sorry. I made a call tonight after Vickie’s death.”

Maxine stayed silent, waiting for the other wooden stake to fall.

“I called my, well, ex-husband.”

Maxine was running out of patience while Tessa babbled on. Would the woman just come to the point?

“Zachary Fox. I phoned him this evening and called in a favor he owes me. He’ll be arriving sometime tomorrow.”

“Zachary Fox, the slayer?” Maxine shuddered. Was Tessa insane? Did she not think they had enough trouble with a rogue slayer in the club tonight? What was the woman thinking, inviting a professional killer into their midst? If the others found out, the club would be empty of vampires by nightfall, and Temperance would be closed for the first time in over 100 years.

“It’s not what you think. I know slayers, good ones and bad ones., Hell, you probably didn’t know it, but I was one once. There was something off about the hit tonight. I have a really bad feeling. I think someone was sending you a message.”

“Tessa, I get hate mail and threats on a daily basis. If it isn’t the public shouting for me to close down, it’s the mob trying to hone in on the business. I don’t think Victoria’s destruction was anything more than a rogue slayer trying to make a name for himself.”

“Maybe,” Tessa said, but her voice sounded anything but convinced. “But I think we need a professional to investigate. Especially since the police have pretty much washed their hands of all of us. Damn them anyway.”

Maxine looked around her at the gleaming oak tables, colorful Tiffany lamps, and the huge bar her great-grandfather had carved by hand. Temperance was her life. If it were to fail, stand empty, it would be a reinforcement of the existence that had been forced on her. No, she had to make this a success.

Her mother had inherited it after her grandfather’s death ten years ago. It should have come to Maxine. However, she’d lost it all when she died. Thank goodness, Jimmy had no interest in running the bar. After a brief period of ‘remodeling’, she had reopened it as a fetish club and struck it rich. She couldn’t bear to lose it. If the living patrons didn’t come, the vampires would have no other way to support their blood habit but by…

No, she wasn’t going to let that happen.

“We’ll just have to be more careful tomorrow night when we reopen.”

“Careful? How? A metal detector isn’t going to do jack shit against a wooden stake,” Tessa argued. “Or are you going to have everyone frisked at the front door?” She looked around. “Whoever killed Vickie was no amateur slayer, and if we don’t stop them, he or she will kill again.”

“And a professional slayer will do what? Help him kill us all?” Maxine shook her head. “No, we’ll handle the situation ourselves.”

Before Tessa could argue further, Maxine strode off. Her entire body felt numb with dread. Was Tessa right? Could someone be targeting her and her club?

It had to be the mob. When she’d first opened, they’d sent a few muscle-bound ‘gentlemen’ around to talk to her. Threatened her that if she didn’t pay protection money, ‘bad’ things were bound to happen.

She had sent the goons back to their boss with a few broken bones for their trouble. The mob had left her alone to some extent. She still got the occasional visit and letter from Mr. Poulos himself. But nothing like this.

After checking to make sure all her employees were reassured, she headed downstairs. She picked up one last crumpled napkin off the floor and then paused in the foyer. For the first time in six years, she locked the doors to Temperance before dawn. The clatter of the deadbolt left her with the uneasy feeling that she would never open the doors again.

No, she’d been killed, had fought the city for a liquor license, and had been threatened by the toughest man in Chicago. One measly murder was not going to force her to turn tail and run.

Striding down the hall on her way to her office, she passed a small cluster of employees. They looked up at her, and she stopped to talk, hoping to allay their fears. Even as she reassured them, she could see their doubts clearly in their eyes and expressions. If she didn’t do something and do it fast, they would leave. When they did, they would be easy game for anyone with a wooden stake and a Buffy-the-vampire-slayer complex. Here at Temperance, they were safe, they could earn a living, and with luck and Congressional lobbying, perhaps they could finally earn status as citizens again.

“So, what are we going to do, Miss Maxine?” a petite blonde vampire asked, her lips trembling.

“Did you call the police?” Vincent Price, their headliner who’s name really was Vincent, put his hand on her shoulder.

Maxine could almost smell his fear, and she hoped her outwardly calm demeanor would give him some comfort. It was hard enough to have died once and been forced to give up friends and family, many of whom recoiled from vampires in terror and loathing. To die again, soulless, was a terrifying possibility. One that she had every intention of preventing.

Maxine chewed on her lip. She could lie, but they deserved to know the truth. “Yes, the police were called, but they refused to help us.”

“So what are we going to do? I don’t have anywhere else to go. Temperance is my home.” Vincent’s friend and sometimes lover, Marcus, known to his fans as Van Helsing, had tears in his eyes.

“We’re not going to panic, for one. And I’m not going to close the club. But we are going to take some precautions.” Maxine looked around at their worried faces and grasped at the only straw she had. “I’ve called in an, um, consultant. He’ll be here tomorrow to investigate.”

The relief in her employees’ faces was clear. Marcus even smiled.

Damn it all, a consultant? The man was nothing but a cold-blooded killer, a slayer. Instead of relief, Maxine felt a surge of fear. Hopefully she hadn’t invited the wolf right into the fold.

“Did you come to watch or work out?”

Her breathless voice shattered his heated fantasies. She walked toward him. Her movements were easy, graceful. She was a woman at home in her own skin, confident, self-assured and every man’s fantasy.

“I’m a lover, not a fighter.” He offered her a smile.

An answering smile quirked her lips. “Most fail to realize that both can be equally…exciting.”

She’s flirting with me.

“However…” his smile grew, “…one has a much more satisfying ending.”

Bold as brass, she looked him up and down before spearing him with her emerald gaze. Her eyes held a wealth of experience, and in that moment he realized she knew what she was doing to him and she was enjoying it.

“Only if it’s done right,” she drawled.

His palms burned with the desire to touch her. “I haven’t had any complaints.”

“As if you’d admit if you did.” She chuckled. Gesturing for him to follow, she turned and presented him with a toned backside. She led him past the weight machines to an open area covered with thick, navy-blue exercise mats.

“So what do you know about self-defense?” she asked.

“Enough to keep myself out of trouble.” He wasn’t sure he wanted to admit he’d earned his black belt in Tae Kwan Do a few years ago. He had enjoyed watching her so much, he wouldn’t mind her showing him a thing or two.

“What do you want to try?”

How about you naked, under me, over me, beside me? Your choice.
