Chapter One

His dark eyes caressed the curves of her buttocks like a warm hand. Erika Larson-Bergstrom shivered as she glanced at him out the corner of her eye. She licked her lips as his gaze captured hers and he smiled, unnerving her while at the same time arousing her until she ached with need.

A part of her wondered if her mischievous twenty-two-year-old twin daughters had set this up. After all, they were the ones who´d given her the $100 gift certificate for Erotically Bound, the upscale Minneapolis adult store she shopped in right now. But the man eyeing her was no twenty-two-year-old kid. He was all man and she wanted to explore every inch of him...intimately.

Erika looked down at the lingerie she fingered, trying to clear her lust-filled mind. Her biggest problem was that she´d spent the last twelve years rearing her daughters as a single mom. She could count on one hand the number of men she´d dated during that time. The number she´d slept with was even less. She was just horny and needed to get laid, and he was the answer to a horny woman´s prayer.

"Miss, could you assist me?" His voice was warm and deep with the hint of an Antonio Banderas-style Spanish accent. She looked up into the warmest brown eyes she´d ever seen. At least he´d called her "miss" and not "ma´am".

"Assist you?"

"Yes, I must buy a gift for a lady and I have no idea what she might want."

"Oh." Erika forced a smile to her tight lips. "Sure."

Well, that certainly burst her bubble. He had a woman he was shopping for. It figured. Of course it should have been a relief he wasn´t buying undies for himself since he was shopping in the women´s lingerie section, but she´d been dreaming he might possibly be as attracted to her as she was to him.
No such luck.

He wanted a buddy to help him shop for another woman. Shit. Buddy seemed to be the only way men viewed her-especially lately-and it was almost always because she was a plus-size woman. Women with big butts liked sex too. Damn men, anyway.

"So what´s the gift for? Your anniversary? Her birthday?"

"Anniversary? No." He laughed. She liked his laugh...a lot. He threw himself into it. His head back and his hands running through his hair. Thick, black hair. Yum.

Focus, Erika. Do not notice the full, wide lips and straight, white teeth. The high cheekbones. She swallowed, her gaze skimming over him. The broad shoulders, narrow hips and tight ass. Forget how hot he is. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn´t ignore his appeal. Her pussy was damp and swollen...as if she had a chance in hell of taking him inside her.

"I´m shopping for my administrative assistant."

"Your...?" Oh geez. Sleeping with an employee. Could it get worse?

He waved his hand as he read her expression. "No, she is getting married and this place has a bridal registry."

"A bridal registry? You´ve got to be kidding." Erika raised her brows.

"I know. It sounds insane, and so I told her. But she assured me it was so." He pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to her. "Here is a list of things the clerk printed for me that have not yet been purchased for her. My assistant is very organized and wants no duplicates."

Erika looked at the list he held and realized he was telling the truth. It consisted of lingerie, loungewear, dresses, shoes and, good grief, sex toys and movies.

"It´s...um...comprehensive."

"Yes. I refuse to buy her some of these items. I am her friend, yes, but her employer first. Can you imagine if I showed up at the office bridal shower with," he took the list back, glaring at it while shaking his head in disbelief, "a Rotating G-Spot Rabbit Vibrator?"

"It would certainly be the talk of the party," Erika agreed dryly.

"Yes, laugh at me. Sofia certainly has done so."

"Your wife?"

"No, my assistant. I am not married."

"Oh. Well, there are some clothes on here."

"Crotchless panties? I ask you-in what universe should a boss give his assistant crotchless panties?"

"What do you want to give her?" She fought her laughter. He looked truly distressed. His dark brows were drawn together and his mouth tight.

"A toaster." He nodded decisively, once.

Erika lost her fight, laughing in delight. "No wonder she sent you here instead. No woman wants a toaster for a wedding gift."

"There is nothing wrong with a toaster. I would get her an expensive one that does everything but grocery shops for her. Does she want this? No. Instead she wants sexy clothes. X-rated films. Bah..." He shook his head, slashing his hand in front of him in disgust.

She liked his attitude. It was kind of old-fashioned, but then she was pretty traditional too. Most of the time. But not right now. Right now she wanted to throw him up against a wall and kiss the shopping frustration off his face. She wanted to peel his black suit jacket off his muscled body and rip his white shirt open so she could get to his broad chest to taste it. Oh geez. Down, Erika.

"Can I see the list? Maybe we can find something palatable to you."

"By all means." He handed it back to her, his fingers brushing hers. She inhaled, fighting a moan as the touch went right to her pussy.

Erika shook her head slightly. What the heck was wrong with her? She couldn´t remember any man affecting her like this in...years. Had it really been that long since she´d had sex with something other than her long-suffering vibrator? Yes, unfortunately it had. Erika dragged her eyes off him with effort and forced herself to read the list.

"There´s a pair of shoes here that might be okay."

"I don´t think so."

"Why? Shoes are okay-even if they are stilettos."

She glanced down at her feet, surprised they didn´t hurt in the fancy heels she´d just received in the mail from Bella. They were gorgeous. She´d forgotten how much she liked them during the three months they´d belonged to her childhood friend. But now they were hers. She just hoped they lived up to the auctioneer´s spiel about them. Ruby slippers to make your heart´s desire come true. We´ll see.

"Did you notice the manufacturer of them?" he asked.

"My shoes?" Yeah, he was damn close to her heart´s desire.

"Although your shoes are quite attractive, I meant the shoes on the list."

"Oh right." A little too self-absorbed there, Miss Erika, she chided herself. Erika ducked her head to read the listing, but she sure didn´t recognize the company name. "Fukkeme? Are they Japanese?"

"Um...I don´t believe so. Think about the company name for a moment and it will become clear. Or perhaps my mind is-how do you say?-in the gutter inappropriately-however, this is an adult store."
He waved around them.

Fukkeme? What was the problem? Oh hell no. And she´d said it out loud. To him. Her face went hot and she knew without a doubt she was blushing from her head to her feet.

"Sorry. I didn´t get it at first," Erika muttered.

"I understand. No worries, miss. I actually grabbed up the shoes, intending to purchase them until I looked at the box. When I saw the company logo, I finally understood."

"What´s so terrible about the company logo?"

"Two shoes having sex. I must admit to being envious of the stiletto on top. He has quite an impressive...heel."

Her gaze flew to his and she saw his lips twitching. Erika giggled, and when he chuckled, they both bent double with laughter.

"Oh my goodness. The mind boggles. Truly," she gasped around her laughter, wiping away tears.
"And well it should."

"Hmmm. Perhaps some lingerie then."

"Not..."

"No, not crotchless panties. Let´s see. There´s a negligee on the list. That might work." Erika looked for the right gown and blinked, blushing as she stared at a revealing red lace negligee. It was beautiful and one she might buy for herself with the $100 gift certificate her daughters gave her.
He lifted the delicate fabric in his large hands and eyed her as if he was imagining her wearing it. "This might work. Sofia is curvy and sexy like you."

"Sexy? Like me?"

"Yes. She has beautiful, dangerous curves like yours." He smiled at her.

"You aren´t her fiancée, are you?"

"Heavens no. She´s much too fierce for me."

"Oh." Did he really call her sexy?

"Perhaps you would try the gown on so I might know if this will truly suit her."

“I need a name.” He had to have one. It drove him crazier by the second that she wouldn’t share it with him.

“For a drive-by, one-night stand? That was your intent, right?”

“Well…yeah. But I…” He couldn’t explain why it mattered. Hell, he didn’t know why it mattered. It just did. And what if she was a Marine? What about her rank? The whole fraternization thing? Fuck, he was going down for one rule-breaker after the other. But then, if she suspected he was a gunnery sergeant, she’d be on the watch for fraternization too. Maybe they were the same rank, or close, or…

“What are you calling me in your head?” Another naughty grin jerked his rambling thoughts to a halt. “Be nice now.”

“Little Red. Red.”

“Cute. Not very original, but it’ll do.” She took another bite.

And calling him Gunny was original? Subject closed. He let her win this round. The night was young and he was still horny. Getting hornier by the second.

Jim played out intelligent conversations in his head while they finished his burger then divvied up hers. Nothing scholarly came to mind. He was left with the basics.

Jim leaned back, one arm on the bench seat behind her, the other clutching the beer, ready to play twenty questions. One sip of his drink stopped him cold. He just couldn’t do it. He pushed the brew away, signaled the waitress, and ordered what he really wanted—wine.

“Make it two, please.”Red pushed her drink away too. “This lemonade isn’t working for me. And these drinks will be on me.” She scooted into the curve of his body. “That’s one pretense out of the way.”

“Speaking of which…”

She pressed her index finger against his lips. “No names, Gunny.”

It bugged the hell out of him. “All right.” For now.“Occupation?”

“Employed.”

“Come on, Red. Gimme something.”

She tickled her fingers down to his navel. “I’d hoped to give you a lot tonight.”

“You know me? Been here before? Have we met?”

Her laughter felt like spring, all bright and warm after a long, hard winter. “No…to all of the above.
This in my first time in here. And no, I’m not new in town.”

“So why tonight, here, me?”

“Goodness, so many questions.” She thanked the waitress for their wine, grabbed both glasses, and handed him one. “I came in here to meet a heartbroken girlfriend. She bailed. I was getting ready to leave and saw you looking all…needful. How could I possibly resist? Plus, I didn’t think a decent-looking guy like you deserved to get tangled up with any of this.” She waved her hand toward the other females in the bar.

“You do this often?” Now that was a nasty question, and Jim regretted it the second the words left his mouth.

Judging from the startled look in her eyes, the question had hurt. Red should have kneed him in the balls and taken off. Instead, those green eyes softened, settled on him…in him. “No. Never.
Sometimes a person has to take a chance. Do something a little crazy. I needed. You needed. Good?”

Jim had thought so at first. “Yeah…good.”

Red rested her hot palm on his thigh and cuddled in close. “I like dogs, gardening and hiking. I’m a nerd and proud of it. Your turn.”

“Friends call me Rod.”

That brought snickers and a Spock-like lift of her eyebrow.

“Short for Roderick, my last name. First name’s Jim.”

“Preferences?” She sipped her wine. His eyes locked on to how her lips glistened afterward.

Jim honestly didn’t give a damn what friends called him. The nickname had also morphed into his work life, making him Gunny Rod. But from a woman he wanted more. He needed intimacy, especially from this woman.

He laughed to himself at the irony of it all. He’d come for a hook-up and here he was assigning more to it, needing more from it.

“Jim. As long as you don’t add any Star Trek reference to it.” Though he wouldn’t mind if she did.
“Jim.” She kissed him, soft and sweet. No tongue, just lips pulling at his. Tempting, not teasing. A nibble, a pull. As if he were somebody more than a desert-dried Marine who hadn’t been laid in six months.

Andi slid onto a vacant barstool and crossed her legs at the knee. A man with shoulder-length blond hair stood behind the bar, a white towel draped over one shoulder. He commanded notice in that charming stud kind of way. He approached her with a sexy smile lifting the corners of his lips.

“What can I get for you?” He braced his hands on the bar in front of her.

“An amaretto sour, please.”

As he walked away to prepare her drink, she turned in her seat, her gaze roaming over the attendees. A man by the door caught her attention. There was something familiar about him that she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

His short brown hair had been cut in a fashion that most military men would wear. The strong line of his jaw gave him that rugged handsomeness she associated with the alpha males she read about in romance novels. He stood casually with one hand tucked into the pocket of his black slacks. No tie encircled his neck—instead the top two buttons of his white button-down shirt had been left undone.

“Who are you staring at?” Margo asked.

Andi jerked in her seat and spun quickly to look at Margo, who had come up behind her. “I wasn’t staring at anyone.”

“I beg to differ. You were staring at that prime specimen of beefcake over there.” Margo caught the bartender’s attention with a wave of her hand. “I’ll have what she’s having.”

“I thought you hated fruity drinks.”

“I do.” Margo sighed. “But it’s a little early to be hitting the hard stuff straight up.”

Andi’s attention went back to the man across the room. “Who is he?”

“Are you talking about the man you’re not staring at?”

Andi rolled her eyes as she turned back to her friend. “Seriously. Do you recognize him?”

Margo looked him up and down, lines creasing her brow. “I think that’s John Clayton.”

Andi drew a blank on the name. “I don’t remember a John Clayton.”

“Sure you do,” Margo replied as she accepted her drink from the bartender. “He transferred in during our senior year.”

Andi tried to access her memory from ten years ago as her gaze went back to him again. “I’m still not placing him.”

“He sat behind you in English class.”

The memory of a tall, skinny guy with acne on his chin and forehead popped into her mind. “Oh, wow. He’s definitely changed some.”

But she couldn’t refute Margo’s knowledge. She could see the resemblance now. He met her gaze. Andi’s heart rate increased as she snapped her head down, taking a newfound interest in her drink on the bar.

“Busted,” Margo said in a low, sing-song voice. “Don’t look now, but he’s coming this way. I’ll leave you two to catch up.”

“Margo…” Andi ground out through clenched teeth, before Margo retreated with a smile only a mischievous friend could give.

“Can I get an MGD?”

The low male voice sent a shiver of awareness down her spine. She fought the urge to turn and look at him.

“I believe you’re Andi Morgan, right?” he asked.

So much for not looking at him. She couldn’t be downright rude and ignore him. She turned her head and looked up at him. Big mistake. Perfect brows arched over amber eyes surrounded by light brown lashes. His nose had a slight hump in it. No doubt it had been broken at some point in his life, but it didn’t detract from his handsomeness in the least. In fact, it added to that ruggedness she had noticed from afar. His full lips were tipped up slightly as he waited for her to respond. “Yes, that would be me. And I believe you’re John Clayton.”

The corner of his mouth lifted as he accepted the beer from the bartender and saluted her with it. “Correct.” He took a drink from the bottle. “I’m surprised you remember me.”

“Well…to be totally honest, Margo remembered your name.”

“Ah. Well I would say my pride is wounded, but you made up for not remembering my name by the way you were staring at me.” He smiled before touching the bottle to his lips again, taking another swallow of the drink.

“I wasn’t staring at you,” she said, which earned her another smile.
A flutter ran through her chest and settled low in her belly.

The look he shot her clearly showed his doubt.

She looked down at her glass, then back at him, trying to fight off the smile that threatened to spread across her face. He was teasing her and she kind of liked it. It felt refreshing after all the years of wearing her serious game face around Steve and his family.

“Okay. So I wouldn’t call it staring. You did look familiar, and I was just trying to put a name with your face.”

He leaned one hip against the bar. “So, are you disappointed with your findings?”

This time she didn’t fight back her smile. “The jury’s still out on that one.”

Chapter One

“She’s fucking insane.”

Snyder slammed on the brakes and narrowly missed Kate’s Jeep when she swerved in front of him. “Give me directions instead of commentary, Tripp. You pay attention to the tornado and I’ll pay attention to crazy drivers.”

He gunned the engine of his truck as he watched the offending vehicle speed down the dirt road dividing a freshly plowed field. “Where the hell is she going?” he muttered, more to himself than his partner in the passenger seat.

The ominous supercell had dropped a howling twister a few miles back. Now the race was on to catch it. Tripp’s fingers tapped on the screen of the tablet he was using for a GPS. “Take this road here and keep following it. Should put us a few miles ahead of this cell.”

“Got it. What kind of action are you seeing?”

The keys of the laptop mounted to the dashboard clacked as Tripp’s fingers flew over them and he snorted. “Straight and steady, for the moment. Kate must know something we don’t.”

Snyder gritted his teeth as he flipped on the blinker and sped past a slower-moving car. “Not my problem right now. Besides, she isn’t exactly behaving any differently than normal.”

Their colleague Kate Sinclair was a risk taker and an adrenaline junkie—a definite plus considering the reason they drove thousands of miles in one day. Craziness was always beneficial when chasing violent storms that were capable of leveling entire towns. Snyder hated to admit it, but Kate’s brash actions always got the team what they
needed. The data they collected was vital and necessary to increase warning times.

“Just get me where I need to be so we can intercept this thing and get out of here before things really get nasty.”

“Take a right. Pick up the road at the end and follow it out.”

The abrupt change of direction worried Snyder. “Is it shifting?”

“A bit, yeah. This should compensate and keep us in the path. Shit.”

Been waiting for that. Out of the corner of his eye, Snyder saw Tripp Dawson drum his fingers against the seat while he studied the netbook in his lap. That kind of contemplation was not a good sign when they were chasing a vortex generating winds over one hundred miles an hour. “What now?”

Tripp muttered something under his breath and Snyder cleared his throat to get his attention. “Shifting again. There doesn’t seem to be any kind of clear path that I can make out. She went from straight as an arrow to as crooked as the mountains back home. It’s almost impossible to track like this—look out!”

Prepared this time, Snyder let off the accelerator and tapped the brakes. To his left, Kate’s white Jeep sped through a stop sign. If he hadn’t stopped before the intersection, she would have slammed into the side of his truck.

Fucking insane is putting it lightly.

Well past annoyed now, he immediately jerked the wheel to the right and slammed the accelerator to the floor. Tripp fumbled for the handle over the window as the truck hit a few cavernous potholes that sent expensive equipment flying. Snyder would replace anything he broke with his own money when this chase was over. For the moment, broken equipment was the least of his worries.

Knowing she wouldn’t bother to answer her cell phone, Snyder thumbed the receiver on his radio with one hand and hollered into the handset. “Kate, get your head out of your ass. You’re going to get one of us killed if you keep driving like this.”

The vehicle in front of them took a hard left without signaling or stepping on the brakes. Caught unaware, Snyder flew past the turn, unable to stop with his heavier vehicle.

“Fuck me. SKYWARN spotters report it’s increasing in size and strength again. Just took out the entire power grid.”

The laptop they used for their storm lab broke free from its clips and hit the windshield as Snyder slammed on the brakes and threw the gearshift into reverse. Tripp scrambled to collect everything before it went flying.

On the right path, Snyder used the radio once more. “Kate, this thing is bigger than they’re expecting and growing by the second. It’s too damn dangerous. Call off the chase now. It’s not worth the risk.”

When radio silence met him, he tossed the receiver to the dashboard and gripped the steering wheel. This time, when Kate made a sharp turn, he was ready for it and took it with her.

“We’re not chasing the funnel anymore, are we?” Snyder kept his focus on the road ahead and ignored Tripp’s question. He pushed the truck more than he would have normally because the tornado was the least of his worries. The last thing he wanted to do was scrape Kate off the side of some dirt back road in the middle of Kansas.

Kate suddenly braked, coming to a complete stop in the center of the road. Her door flew open and she jumped out, camera in hand.

Ignoring the truck as they approached, she immediately went to the other side of the Jeep, using the front quarter panel to brace her body against the wind.

Snyder stopped the truck a few yards away and narrowed his gaze as he kept an eye on his colleague, who’d willingly put herself in danger.

“What does Doppler say?”

“Radar is showing it’s losing some energy, but still staying on this heading.”

Which mean it would pass close by, but not enough to put them in any kind of serious danger. Snyder leaned forward and adjusted the video camera mounted on the dash as he studied the dark clouds.

The radio crackled and Tripp made a grab for it. “Blaney? We got one.”

“We lost you guys back near the airport. Where the hell are you?”

“We’re out on 9 near Jewell.” Tripp shook his head and rolled his eyes at Snyder with all the hoots and hollers that came across the radio. The group was an assortment of students from Kate’s forecasting classes at the University of Oklahoma. Most of them were just as crazy as the woman in front of them.

“Caught it, didn’t you? We’ll monitor things from here. Charley is getting some good video.”

So is someone else. Snyder continued to watch as Kate snapped picture after picture of the storm and wondered what had driven her to take this track. He would have never guessed the storm would be here right at this moment. He’d always thought his instincts about storms were dead on until he’d met Kate five years ago.

Their first day in the field, she’d put him to utter shame when he hadn’t followed her forecasting and ended up in another state. She’d intercepted the storm of her career and he’d encountered nothing but miles and miles of a sky free of any sort of storm clouds.
His first blue sky bust.

He and Tripp had learned a lot since then, and they owed it all to Kate.

“Not good. Not good.”

The tight strain in Tripp’s voice caught Snyder’s attention. “What?”

“Tornado’s heading right for us.”

Fear tightened Snyder’s gut as Tripp’s worried gaze met his. “Hell. Get over here. Turn us around and I’ll get her whether or not she likes it.” Wind bit at him as soon as he stepped out of the truck. Focused on one goal, he didn’t care if it ripped him to shreds.

He focused on the fact they all needed to get out of here.

As he held up his arms to deflect the wind, the rain started. Driven by high-speed winds, the drops lashed at him, soaking his clothing in seconds. The heavy weight of his wet cotton tee and jeans didn’t deter him in his quest. He fought the gusts, wrestling with the ferocity of nature to get to his goal.

The howling was horrible and reminded him of a jet engine barreling down a runway right for them. That strong wind whipped Kate’s black hair, tangling it as she widened her stance in order to brace herself against the approaching storm. She moved with a casual ease that gave no hint to the danger swirling less than a half mile from where they stood.

The elephant-trunk-shaped tornado gave a deep growl as it chewed up the field. It had darkened considerably since they’d started the chase, the dirt and debris it churned up altering the color to a deep, murky gray. If Snyder hadn’t been so worried about getting Kate and leaving, he might have taken the time to be impressed with Mother Nature’s creation.

He ducked as a thin tree branch narrowly missed his head and reminded him why he was in this mess. The Jeep provided a good anchor and he braced himself against it as he pressed forward.

“Kate, we have to get out of here.”

She was so focused she didn’t even bother to look at him. “I’ll be fine. She’s been shifting the whole path. She’ll shift again.”

“No, she won’t. She’s headed right for you. Come on!”

“Help.” The voice was female and would have been musical if there hadn’t been such a note of panic in it. “Help me. My car’s been stolen.”

Josh jerked himself out of his reverie and stared at the woman clumping her way along the parking lot. And clumping was definitely the right word, what with the walking cast on one leg from her foot to just below the knee. She would have bumped right into him if he hadn’t caught her by the arms.

“Hey. Hold on.” He tightened his fingers when she tried to pull away. “I don’t think trying to run in that cast is the best idea in the world. Now. You said someone stole your car?”

“Yes.” She jerked loose from him, and looked around wild-eyed. “Where’s that idiot valet kid?”

Josh studied the image in front of him. Even with the clumsy cast she could make his pulse speed up without much urging. She barely came up to his shoulders but the anxiety and anger more than made up for her size. A thin, navy sweater and knee-length skirt hugged curves that in any other situation he’d be itching to run his hands over. Thick hair in a rich brown tumbled around her face, framing hazel eyes and a sensuous mouth. He saw all of this in a matter of seconds before she started screaming again, and immediately his physical reaction disappeared.

“Listen to me.” He reached for her again. In his business he was used to dealing with crazy clients. How different could this be? “Can you just calm down a minute and tell me about your car? I’ll see if I can help you.”

At that moment the valet drove up in Josh’s tricked-out pickup. The woman broke away from Josh and limped over to him, managing surprising speed what with the bulky cast. She grabbed the kid by the lapels on his vest and stuck her face close to his.

“You have to help me. Right now. My car’s been stolen.”

The kid paled and looked to Josh, who had followed the woman.

“Okay.” He managed the peel her fingers from the kid’s vest and grab her wrists. “Can we take a deep breath here and find out exactly what’s wrong?”

“Exactly what’s wrong,” she ground out, “is that someone stole my brand-new car. I parked it over there.” She pointed to a spot somewhere further down the parking lot.

“Can you tell me a little more specifically?” Josh was doing his level best to bring some common sense and calm to the situation. “Maybe you just forgot where you left it?”

She pulled herself away from him again. “Not likely. Who the hell are you, anyway?”

“Josh McMann.” He curved his lips in what his last three girlfriends had told him was a killer smile that could make women melt. He hoped it worked this time because this sexy handful was about to self-destruct. “How about telling me who you are?”

“Vanessa Bowen. Ness. And I’m missing a brand spanking new BMW.” Panic washed over her face. “It doesn’t even have fifty miles on it.”

Josh looked at the valet kid. “Did you park it for her?”

He shook his head, his face pale and panic evident on his face.

He makes minimum wage and tips. He’s not about to claim any knowledge of a high-end vehicle.

Ness waved her hands in the air. “Absolutely not. Do you think I’d trust it to some idiot?”

Way to make friends, Josh thought, and dragged out his best smile. “Hey, hey, hey. Let’s calm down and find out what’s going on.”

“What going on is my car’s been stolen.” She took a deep breath, let it out and burst into tears.

Josh looked at the valet, shrugged and pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket.

She looked at him, her face red and tear-stained, and took the handkerchief.

“Thank you. I don’t know what came over me. I don’t usually shriek like a banshee or burst into tears.” She gave him a watery grin. “At least not in public.”

He waited until he figured she was as composed as she was going to get before he spoke again. “Maybe,” he said in a soothing voice, “if you could show us exactly where you parked we might find some answers. There could be a security camera there. I happen to know this mall has several of them.”

”Okay.” She wiped her eyes once more and started to hand the handkerchief back to him.

“Keep it.” He grinned at her. “You might need it again.”

“Oh god,” she sighed “I hope not. I promise you I’m not such a ditz. It’s just…it’s just…the past week’s been such a bitch.”

“No sweat. I’ve had weeks like that, too.”

She opened her mouth to speak and the words fell out like a cascading waterfall. “I got in this accident with my car and it had to be totaled and it took the insurance company forever to settle the claim and I broke my ankle and the guy I’m seeing—was seeing—took off on our vacation with someone else and…” She clapped a hand over her mouth.

The tears started again. Josh thought, along with a broken ankle, she had a major case of stress. What kind of schmuck would take off with another woman when the one he planned his vacation with ended up with broken bones?

“I didn’t hear a word,” he assured her.

“I apologize. This isn’t me at all. Really.”

He could see her struggling to regain her composure. “So how about showing me where you parked?”

She grabbed his hand. “Down here. Let’s go.”

The valet sagged with relief. “I’ll just put your truck over here at the side, Mr. McMann.”

“Good idea.” He slid another folded bill into the kid’s hand. “Keep an eye on it for me, will you?”

“Sure thing.” He shoved the money in his pocket and turned to the waiting crowd of customers.

Ness Bowen was already tugging Josh down the sidewalk, past the restaurant and the very curious crowd of onlookers waiting for their cars. He didn’t have trouble keeping up with her, what with her cast and all. He was more worried about the death grip she had on his hand and the fact she was cutting off circulation to his fingers. They had passed three storefronts when she finally stopped, raked her hair back from her face and pointed to an empty parking space.

“There.” She pointed. “Right there.”

Josh looked. Yup. The spot was empty. It also had a blue and white sign, impossible to miss, with the legend Restricted: Handicapped Only.

Josh wasn’t sure if he should be mad at the woman’s stupidity or laugh at it.

“Vanessa,” he began.

“Ness,” she insisted.

“Okay, Ness.” What the hell difference did it make? “It appears you parked in a handicapped space. My guess is mall security had your car towed.”

She dragged her fingers through her hair. “But I have a temporary permit.”

“Because of your cast?”

She nodded, breathing out a sigh of exasperation. “Damn. I must have forgotten to display it.”

Josh swallowed a sigh. Why did it always happen to him? His brothers always said he was born with the white knight gene and he attracted women in distress.

“Maybe it’s the only way you can get them,” Tyler had joked one night, then ducked before Josh could deck him.

“I was so scared,” she said, pushing away from him.

Ridge kept his arms clamped around her, refusing to let her go. Eventually the fight drained away and she sagged against him.

“You were both hurt. I couldn’t talk to either one of you. I’ve never felt so alone in my life.”

Why hadn’t he thought of this? He’d always seen her as so strong and independent. He hadn’t realized how much she needed her brother. Could he have been a bigger ass?

“I was so scared I would lose both of you,” she said, lifting her head and looking into his eyes. “If I’d lost you both, I don’t how I’d have survive.”

“Avery.” Her name was all he could manage. There was a pleading in her eyes that he didn’t understand, but he wanted so badly to do whatever it was she needed.

She smoothed her palms up his chest. “I’ve drifted through the last few days detached and empty.”

That he understood, along with the heat that spread throughout his system from her touch. He wanted to groan from her caress, a pleasure he didn’t deserve.

“I don’t want to feel empty anymore.” Her fingers slipped the top button of his shirt free. “I need to feel alive.” The next two buttons were quickly released.

“Avery,” he whispered, shaking his head and helpless to stop her. He couldn’t allow this. It wouldn’t be right. He didn’t have anything to offer her.

“No more talking. No more hurt right now.”

Ridge sucked in a deep breath as her warm hands pressed against his bare chest and pushed his shirt off his shoulders. He needed to stop this before it got out of hand. She didn’t really want him. She just wanted solace and he was the only one available to give it to her.

“Stop thinking,” she told him softly as she unlatched his belt.

This was what he’d dreamed of for so many years, what got him through those nights in Afghanistan. Thinking about Avery’s soft body and how mind-blowing it would be having her under him, and she was offering up that dream. Everything he’d ever wanted was right here in front of him and he’d be a bastard for taking it, or a bastard for refusing.

Avery looked at him. “Pretend I’m someone else if you have to. Just give me this.”

A single tear trickled from her eye, spilled down her cheek and erased every doubt he had about taking what she offered. Pretend? Dear God. He’d never have to pretend she was someone else.

Grasping the back of her neck, he let his gaze settle on her plump lips and lowered his head. All those years of wondering what she’d taste like, how sensuous her silky lips would be against his, and he was about to find out.

“No pretending.” He whispered the promise and then touched her lips with his.

Just a brush. He didn’t want to scare her, or push her any faster than she was willing to go in her fragile state. With featherlight kisses he touched each corner of her mouth, lingered over her lips and tried to commit her softness to memory. If she changed her mind he wanted her to think she could pull back. God help him, he hoped like hell she didn’t change her mind.

Bridget knew Clay was a SEAL, often deployed on missions for weeks at a time. He’d bought the house for the same reason she’d purchased hers—to have some permanence and stability in his life. Bridget figured she’d probably never have a home of her own otherwise and apartment living had just gotten too old for her. Clay said he wanted a place to unwind that was all his. A place where he could put down roots. Do whatever he wanted.

Every so often she’d see a woman in the backyard with him, or sitting beside him in his car as he backed out of the driveway. Tall, leggy brunettes and redheads, with typically classic good looks. The sound of their intimate laughter was a knife straight to her heart, because she knew she’d never share those kinds of moments with him. She dreaded the day he brought a wife home with him and she was forced to watch them wrapped in a haze of happiness and sexual satisfaction.

“Well.” She wiped her suddenly damp palms on her shorts. “I’d better go in.”

“Me too. Big night tomorrow night.” But he made a faced as he said it.

“You don’t look like it’s too big. Or that you’re too happy about it.”

He shrugged. “My team captain happens to live in San Antonio too, just by coincidence, and his wife is involved in some big charitable ball that’s going down tomorrow night. The one that kicks off Fiesta. He made everyone on the team who lives around here buy a ticket. Not only that, he insists that we have to go.”

And of course he’ll be going with a gorgeous piece of arm candy.

“Surely your date will keep you from being too miserable.” There. That was the right casual tone, wasn’t it?

“No date.” He ran a palm over his hair. “No one I could ask to rent a costume and dress up for a masquerade. Bad enough I have to do it myself.”

“No gorgeous babe hanging around these days?” She hated herself for asking the question, no matter how casual she tried to make it.

His laugh was humorless. “Not lately. Must be losing my charm. Or maybe it’s just that I’m starting to lose interest in all show and no go. I’ll just guts it out.”

Bridget nodded but both her mind and her heart were racing. She knew all about the masquerade. Joni’s boss was also on the committee and Joni had been pestering Bridget for weeks to buy a ticket. The cheapest ones were a hundred bucks, though, and not something Bridget wanted to dig into her stash to buy.

But Clay was going without a date. Well, well, well. An outrageous idea was percolating wildly in her brain.

“So I guess you’ve got your costume then?”

“Yeah.” Lines of displeasure grooved his cheeks. “Thank god at least most of my face will be covered so there’s no chance anyone will recognize me.”

Bridget cocked her head, all kinds of possibilities suddenly speed-racing through her brain. “You have a full face mask?”

He nodded. “In a manner of speaking. I’m going as a pirate. Figured that wasn’t too embarrassing. Got a scarf thing to wrap over my head and a big black mask that matches it over my eyes.”

A pirate. Bridget filed that piece of information away in her mind.

“Women love pirates.” She hoped her tone was casual enough. “They’ll probably be hanging all over you.”

Clay snorted. “I doubt it. The women who show up at these things seldom come alone and the ones that do aren’t worth the price of a drink.”

“Maybe tomorrow night you’ll be surprised.” She wet her lips. “Tell you what. I’ll make a bet with you.”

“A bet?”

“Uh-huh. I predict you’ll meet a mysterious woman. She won’t even tell you her real name. She’ll tempt you and tease you and make you want to sweep her off her feet.”

Clay’s mouth kicked up in a grin. “That right? You guaranteeing it?”

“I said I’d bet with you, didn’t I?” She shoved her hands in the pockets of her shorts, waiting tensely for his answer. “Well? You gonna put your money where your mouth is?”

He laughed. “Okay. A bet. Loser buys dinner.”

“You’re on.” She held out her hand.

Clay’s grip was firm and warm. Bridget had expected that, but she hadn’t been prepared for the jolt of electricity that sizzled up her arm and through her body. She pulled her hand back quickly, doing her best to ignore the gleam of mischief in Clay’s eyes.

“I certainly hope so,” he teased.

Bridget’s cheeks turned hot. This was just harmless flirting, something Clay probably did as naturally as he breathed. But for her this was a scarce commodity. Once men got a look at her eyes all flirting was off the table.

“I-I have to go.” She hurried up the driveway, calling over her shoulder, “Good luck. And I expect a full report.”

“If it turns out the way you predict,” he answered, “don’t look for too many details.”

If only this works.

”Confession time day after tomorrow, okay? We’ll meet over the fence.”

“Only long enough so I can tell you where I want you to take me for dinner. Get ready for an expensive meal.”

“We’ll see. Night, now.”

She nearly ran into the house, her mind racing. She might never realize her goal of introducing herself in public as a published author but she at least had the possibility of one night with the man who filled her dreams. And one night was better than none.

"from Divine Deception"

Having Nick present while she visited with Joseph wasn't really in her plans. Frankie had tried to talk Nick into taking the motorcycle to the hospital later in the morning but Margaret had come running down the granite steps swinging a picnic basket as Frankie was climbing into the truck. She handed it to Nick with two quick kisses on his cheeks and stood watching as he climbed into the passenger side of the cab and they pulled from the driveway.

Now they were headed into town, the midmorning sun hanging in an azure sky, its rays dancing on Seneca Lake. Normally Frankie would have loved a day like this but the cab seemed claustrophobic with Nick Gradin's surly attitude sitting between them.

"It's not my fault you didn't know who I was," she said quietly.

Turning to her, he cocked a skeptical eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest.

"You knew your father had a stepdaughter."

"And a child bride," Nick remarked coldly. "I expected my stepsister to have pigtails and braces. Not…" His hand motioned up and down her torso.

"Well, you didn't seem to mind the package yesterday."

"Yesterday I thought you were Joseph's assistant."

"Funny, yesterday I thought you were a womanizing pig of a manwhore." She shot him a patronizing smile. "Guess one of us was right."

He frowned. "If you'll recall, I wasn't the one who came on to you in the field."

"As I recall, it was you who was ready for action in the wine cellar."

"I was simply reading the signals you were sending out."

"Then you have a faulty GPS."

"My wiring is just fine thank you."

"I suppose you think it is, with all the woman you have tumbling into your posh Philadelphia bed."

"Now what the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Oh, as if you don't know."

"I have no idea what you're…oh, this is stupid. Pull over here." Nick motioned to a dirt road that led to a small alcove near the lake.

She'd been parking there once in high school.

"I'm not going to see Joseph until we clear this up and can at least be civil to each other," he said.

Frankie acquiesced. He was right. It wouldn't do Joseph any good to have them bickering in front of him. She turned the truck into the trees, their pumpkin and gold leaves floating passively on the gentle breeze. They bumped down the dirt tracks, the center lane overgrown with the dried weeds of summer. Frankie felt as if she was entering the lion's mouth. Anger surrounded Nick like the cloud of dust trailing behind them. She had no idea why he was so pissed when she'd only spoken the truth.

Shoving the truck in park and shutting off the engine, Frankie stared out over the lake. Its cobalt surface rippled at the gentle touch of the fall breeze. Maybe this was the perfect place to help Nick see things her way. Though she hadn't exactly started the conversation off in the right direction, maybe she could try again. "I think—"

As if he hadn't heard her, Nick got out and slammed the door. Pacing in front of the truck, he pulled at his bottom lip, an angry scowl furrowing his brows. What the hell was his problem? Frankie got out and stalked after him. "For someone who wants to talk, you're damn rude, you know that, Gradin?"

He grabbed her and pressed her against the front of truck, the solid planes of his chest trapping her. "I don't know what my father told you about me but I do not—I repeat, do not—have a rotating door on my bedroom. There is no harem of beauties waiting for me in Philly. When I choose to sleep with a woman I like there to be a little chemistry between me and the lady." His mouth came down hungrily on hers, his taste already familiar. When his tongue ran the seam of her lips, she had no choice but to open to his assault. Fisting his hand in her hair, Nick controlled the breath-stealing tempo while his other hand surrounded her breast, squeezing the sensitive flesh. Warm shocks of want shot straight to her pussy. Frankie's hands seized the soft chambray of his shirt, her heart racing in her ears. Nick broke from her as abruptly as he began. "And there's no denying our chemistry, Francesca."

Chapter One

Savannah put down her briefcase in the immaculate powder room of Kensington & Associates and straightened before the mirror. When meeting with piranhas, it was important to look appetizing but not attainable. She wanted the hunger to be there, but restrained, her opponents recognizing the attractive armor for what it was. A mask for a predator as scary as themselves.

A necessary step when the piranhas were Matthew Lord Kensington and his management team, and the subject of the meeting had yet to be disclosed. He’d simply issued an invitation to discuss a business opportunity over drinks at his office on Friday night. Knowing Matt, that meant glasses of water evenly spaced around the formal conference room table.

She checked her makeup, the arrangement of her streaked blonde hair, the smooth fit of her mid-thigh skirt and the blazer over it. While her father hadn’t believed in using blatant sex to close a deal, he’d had no problem with strategically using the arsenal one had at hand, and that included one’s looks or charm. She had been blessed with an abundance of the former and he’d encouraged her to use it, though always sparingly.

Geoffrey Tennyson’s Rule Twelve: People keep class and elegance around them. Trash gets thrown away after it serves its purpose. The lace of her bra was faintly visible through her white silk blouse if one looked hard enough, and she’d enjoy seeing Matt strain his eyes.

Their negotiations had always been cordial and lucrative, but she’d seen the flare in his gaze when he thought he’d pressed an advantage on her, the tightening of his sensual lips when she’d proved him wrong. She knew he loved it, how they sparred at a table and never could come away claiming anything other than a mutual victory. He craved that, she suspected, hungered to take something from her she wasn’t willing to give. It made things flutter inside her to play the game, to fence and win a draw. Often she went home aching for something nameless, something she was afraid was the desire for him to outsmart her just once, to make her surrender.

If she was totally honest, her interactions with Matt were as close to having sex as she ever got.

Savannah shook herself out of the odd direction of her thoughts, and was appalled to find the crotch of her panties damp. Appalled, but not surprised. He might be surprised though, if he knew how often she’d curled into a fetal ball between her expensive sheets, her thighs squeezed together as she thought of that hard body between her legs, pounding into her, his hands clamped on her wrists, mouth ravaging her neck.

Perhaps it was the time of night making her think this way. A meeting at eight in the evening on a Friday turned her mind to frivolous thoughts, though she didn’t know why. It wasn’t as if she’d be doing frivolous things. While she might have planned an outing with a carefully chosen escort to a gallery showing or movie premiere, that would have been to further the interests of Tennyson Industries. Otherwise, she’d have been home, reviewing the upcoming week’s schedule and analyzing her recent decisions for flaws or holes.

Another of the twelve rules her father had drilled into her to guide every action and reaction. They’d been posted on her bedroom wall like the Ten Commandments, ever since she was old enough to read. Tennyson Rule Eight: A good captain never stops going over every inch of the ship. Every once in a long while she might give herself a Friday night off to watch a movie she’d rented. She’d view it from the couch in her father’s study…her study, now that he was gone.

This might have been such a night. It had been a hard week and she was feeling a bit…well, the armor was a little thin.

Even her disciplined soul wasn’t immune to the flood of anticipation that infused this Friday night with the sense of possibilities. The whole weekend stretched ahead like an adventure.

Mardi Gras had happened this week, and this corporate tower was still feeling the powerful vibrations from the celebration as much as the streets of New Orleans. Several strands of colorful beads and a feathered mask were placed as decoration on the vanity counter. It always bemused her why her father chose to keep their corporate headquarters here, versus New York or Chicago, but whenever she asked, he’d only said that New Orleans was a place where anything was possible. He’d met her mother here, and she suspected the truth was to be found in that. She had died shortly after Savannah was born, of a virulent cancer that had been discovered while she was pregnant. Refusing treatment to protect her unborn child, Portia Tennyson had died nearly six months after the birth of her daughter. She left Savannah a locket containing a curl of her hair and a tiny folded piece of paper, with the scent of lavender and a short message.

You were worth it.

Her father had never liked her wearing the necklace, so until his death she kept it in her bedside table.

She took a deep breath, closing her eyes. Yes, a wise captain would have chosen tonight to stay on the ship, fight the battle Monday when there were fewer titillating portents in the air. The wild desires and dreams that Mardi Gras madness stirred up like a fairy dust storm could impair her judgment seriously. Especially with this particular man.

Regardless, she’d accepted the invitation and chosen to come alone. She always negotiated with Matt and his Intimidation Team by herself, as if underscoring that she had no fear of any of them. Having spent most of her teen years apprenticing in Tennyson’s corporate and manufacturing offices, she had no apprehensions about discussing any aspect of the business on her own. She’d been accepted a year early to a prestigious Ivy League school, finished the coursework and passed the bar a year before her classmates. Serving the four subsequent years as a trial lawyer with a ruthlessly aggressive Washington firm her father had chosen had seasoned her enough to serve as his CFO. She’d had five years at his side in that capacity before he’d died, leaving her a relatively young but extremely capable CEO of a Fortune 500 company whose wealth and power was based in the male-dominated world of steel manufacturing.

Plus, if the desolate truth was known, she’d become attached to working with Matt’s team on their many mutual interests. She wanted to keep them to herself. As though she’d adopted them as her family. Or not so much like a family as something more, something even stranger.

She choked on a laugh. She was definitely off her game tonight. Maybe Matt knew that Friday night, when the empty weekend yawned before her, was her most vulnerable time. The bastard seemed to know everything else. Their buildings, corporate high-rises, were just across the street from one another, and she wouldn’t put it past him to have planted spies in her ranks.

Well, it was her challenge to show him he wasn’t as smart as he thought he was. Then she could fill her weekend with victorious gloating.

Savannah gave herself one last appraising look. The jacket of the pale tan suit followed the shallow curve of her back, nipping in at the waist to flare out in two layers, like a modest bustle of an old-fashioned Victorian dress. The snug linen skirt revealed a teasing picture of the back of her thigh with the slit in back. Modest and professional, even to the faint whiff of perfume, the outfit was perfectly appropriate for a woman to be wearing after five in the evening. She’d left her hair clipped up on her head, but had loosened a few tendrils, giving her a softer look. She wanted to tease.

“Boys, you’re goners,” she decided, but she knew there was only one man who mattered.

She clipped down the hall in her slender heels, the echo loud in the quiet building. Other evidence of the festivities that had occurred earlier in the week caught her attention as she passed open office doors. Sparkling beads hanging on doorknobs or left across a desktop. The inexpensive plastic masks.

The security guard had indicated they were waiting for her on the top floor. When she rounded the corner and saw the conference room door open, she had to suppress a smile. While there were no water glasses on the table, a crystal pitcher and a tray of tumblers were within easy reach on a side credenza.

Then her attention flickered to the man sitting at the head of the table, and her amusement was swept away by something entirely different.

Matt Kensington was a powerful man on Wall Street, even from the distance of New Orleans. But what made him even more potent was that he was a physically dominating man. Over six feet tall, he had dark eyes, raven hair and a swarthy Italian complexion provided by his mother. However, his father’s Texas roots ensured he had none of the prettiness of Italian men that could suggest weakness. Just all of their sexual charisma.

Her blood hammered harder in her arteries when she saw he was alone, not flanked by his usual four-man management team. Though, regardless of who was in attendance, Matt always overwhelmed a room with his presence. Or maybe he just overwhelmed her.

Tennyson’s Rule Two: Always be brutally honest with yourself. Otherwise, you won’t know the difference between the truth and a lie from anyone else.

Every detail of Matt spoke of power and discipline. From his charcoal gray suit that fit his broad shoulders to perfection, to the white line of his cuffs and the gleam of his Yale class ring. Even his manicured nails in no way diminished the capable strength evident in those hands. His bent knee, visible over the edge of the table, hinted he had his foot braced on a leg of the table so he could lean his chair back. The pose was casual. Disarmingly so. She couldn’t help it that her gaze strayed over the column of his thigh.

He rose as he always did, an act of Southern courtesy she’d teased him about with appropriate feminist acidity. He did it for all women, but somehow the way he did it for her, with his gaze locked on hers as he rose, always set butterflies in her stomach into a tailspin. He didn’t smile, those firm lips and aristocratic nose an inspiration for a sculptor trying to depict a warrior king.

It was an apt comparison. The elegance of the board room was a façade. Strip it away, make it the walls of a tent, then prop armor, shields and swords against the wall, and its nature would not change. It was the domain of a conqueror, and every time she came here, she felt it. His desire to claim, control, invade. He’d managed the last, for he’d captivated her mind, but she could accept that.

Tennyson Rule Three: Accept your weaknesses and, if you can’t fix them, compensate for them.

Cleopatra had been no different. She always knew she walked the knife edge between holding the reins and being the spoils of war. Savannah surmised that the Egyptian monarch had kept to the upper side of the knife by being queen first and woman second. If she’d ever forgotten that, had let her woman’s desires completely take her over, her allure to a man of power like Marc Anthony and Caesar would have been fleeting, a piece of candy consumed and forgotten.

Savannah ignored the twist of pain and fatigue such a thought gave her. An emotional reaction, and one she wouldn’t indulge. Men like Matt sought the powerful woman, but a woman wanted a man with whom she could be just a woman occasionally. The problem was that Savannah only wanted a man like Matt. The chicken and egg dilemma of human nature.

She gave a mental shrug, set her briefcase on the table. “Where are your child prodigies, Matthew?”

His wunderkind, they were called. Lucas. Jon. Ben. Peter. The young, hungry men who supported him in the world of manufacturing, now a very dynamic area since technology changed the production playing field almost on a daily basis. They were all attractive twenty- and thirty-somethings who worked hard in the office and played hard in the gym. She wondered if, like a wolf pack, they showered and slept together, and was instantly amused and aroused by the visuals conjured by the thought.

Yes, Savannah, you’re definitely in a strange mood tonight.

Matt had yet to speak, and there was something in his eyes. Something similar to what she’d recognized there before. But tonight it was more direct. Unleashed. For a despicably weak moment, she was glad the length of the table was between them.

Okay, Savannah, enough daydreaming. Time to get a grip or he is going to eat you alive.

And that was entirely the wrong thought, because it summoned a flood of images so powerful they shuddered through her body. She closed her hands on the briefcase to cover the reaction, as if it were a shield she could use against his overpowering attraction.

“You call me Matthew just to irritate me.”

“Would you prefer Mr. Kensington? Or perhaps Lord Kensington?” She added the last in a saccharine tone.

It was a standing joke in the corporate circles, the use of his middle name, bandied about equally as an admiring quip or a bitter insult.

He did not laugh. In fact, he seemed to consider the notion, then his gaze centered on her in a way it had never done before. Perusing her in detail, his attention moved from her face to her throat, pausing over the frantically beating pulse, before continuing down to her breasts, the indentation of her waist, the flare of her hip, just visible to the right of the briefcase. She suppressed the urge to shift out of view.

“If you like,” he said at last. His grin was quick and unexpected. Feral. Pure sex. And it made her focus flounder in a wash of heat. “But I think I prefer Master, or my lord, if you’re using it.”

She blinked. “I’m sure you would.”

“While we’re on the subject, your name is an interesting one.” He seated his hip on an edge of the table. The way he was looking at her across the dimly lit room made her feel the table was not that much of a barrier after all, and that the protection of her briefcase was laughable at best.

“It doesn’t suggest a hard-edged business woman, someone able to shrivel a man’s testicles with a glance, though I have seen you do that. Almost as often as I’ve seen you arouse my men with the simple scent of your perfume, or a glimpse of those killer legs. Particularly when you lean back and cross them so modestly, and you show just the hint of the lace top of your stocking before it’s gone, like a mirage to a man dying of thirst.”

Savannah stayed stock-still, her fingers gripping the handle of her case. “Are you making a point, Matthew, or have you lost your mind?”

“We’re discussing names, I believe, and my point is that a name very much reflects who a person is, deep inside. Savannah suggests a soft, giving woman. When I look at you, Savannah…” He paused, lingering over the name, making a flush rise on her neck. “…I see you waking up in my bed, the cotton sheets caught between your calves, that soft, luscious body molded by a satin sheath with spaghetti straps. One of those straps is falling off the shoulder, so your breast is almost completely exposed, though just not quite. And when I come to you, touch you, make you smile, all that fine, beautiful hair is rumpled and framing your face…”

His gaze flickered over the loosened tendrils that she suddenly wished she had not drawn free of her usually impeccable twist.

She pulled the briefcase off the table, a jerk of motion so he wouldn’t see that her hand was shaking. Men did not affect her that way. “I don’t know what this is, Matthew, but it’s not a business meeting. I’m leaving.”

“Sit. Down.”

The snap of his voice caused her to jump, which made her angry, frosted her voice. “I beg your pardon?”

He straightened off the table, one lithe, quick movement, but his steps toward her were measured, the intent but slow paces of a wolf stalking prey. Or in his case, a shark, those dark glittering eyes promising no mercy.

“You heard me. Sit your pretty ass down, now, or I’ll wear it out so you can’t sit for a week.”

Shock gripped her, both at the words and at the serious intent in his eyes, which told her he very likely meant the astounding thing he had just said. She should be giving him a disdainful look, turning and making her exit, but she couldn’t make her feet move. As if his words were a lightning bolt that had immobilized her in a crackle of powerful current that charged her entire body, all the cells vibrated with apprehension and something else, something rising in her, responding to him and his ridiculous words.

He took another step toward her. Then another. “You drive a man to distraction. Not just the sneaky bit of leg, but that drape of neckline revealing a tiny cup of lace just barely holding your breast in when you lean forward to make a point. The way you touch your hair just behind your ear, lightly, or moisten your lips when you talk.”

“Stop it,” she whispered. “Stop.”

But he didn’t. Not his forward movement or his words. “That’s the thing. You’re teasing my men, but you’re challenging me. From the first moment we met, you’ve known you were mine. Every negotiation has been a dare, a taunt. You want me to prove I’ve got what it takes to make you submit, claim what’s been mine all along.”

Why was her pulse pounding like she was hearing a terrible truth instead of the ravings of a lunatic?

“You’re a tough nut to crack, aren’t you, little girl?” He was almost around the table, and still she couldn’t move. His footfalls were silent, hushed in the carpet.

“Don’t call me that.”

“Oh, that’s right.” He nodded, dark brows drawing down like the shadow of a hawk’s wings. “You’re not a little girl. You’ve never been a little girl. Groomed from birth to take the reins of your father’s empire. Daddy’s closer all your adult life, and then you stepped right into his shoes when he died. You’ve never allowed yourself to be vulnerable, never allowed yourself to be a woman, never daring to risk it. You’ve become so good at it you don’t even know you have a warm, wet, soft pussy, aching for a cock. My cock.

“Tell me, little girl. What would you do right now if I turned you over my knee and gave you a spanking?”
