FANGS FOR CHRISTMAS by Cutter Phoenix

FANGS FOR CHRISTMAS by Cutter Phoenix

Seven years ago on Christmas Eve, Justice, the one person Tristan cared about the most, vanished. Alone for yet another holiday, he rescues a man in an alley only to come face to face with his missing lover.

But something is different about Justice, and before Tristan can stop himself, he welcomes him back into his life. It forces him into the middle of vampire gang wars and he finds himself on the run with Justice. A car chase, a destroyed Christmas tree, and the alleged murder of a spy vamp sends them into the worst blizzard Pennsylvania has endured in years.

Can he allow Justice to have his heart, or will he demand Tristan’s life instead?

“Come here,” Justice said softly. “Let me hold you for a moment.”

At his words, Tristan gulped, the familiar surge of adrenaline jumping through his system. He allowed Justice to draw him closer. In the embrace of the shadows, he savored the feel of his ex’s lips on his forehead then along his temple and down to his mouth where he kissed Tristan deeply. Their tongues dueled, and dimly he remembered how Justice had sucked the steak dry and how he’d showed him fangs and a distorted face. But just as quickly as the memories surfaced, he dashed them to bits. This was Justice, his Justice.

He kissed his old lover back and threaded his fingers into his hair. Everything about his ex felt cold, but surely that stemmed from the winter wind? Justice pushed him more firmly to the bricks and then swept his hand inside Tristan’s coat and palmed his groin. Thoroughly aroused, Tristan groaned loudly, his cock hardening until it throbbed painfully against his zipper.

“I’ve missed you more than you can ever comprehend,” Justice murmured in his ear. He rubbed Tristan’s erection faster. “The memories of making love in your loft apartment are what kept me from going crazy.”

If he didn’t stop caressing him, Tristan would come right there in his jeans. It had been seven long years since they’d been together, and he’d not found it in himself to pursue anyone else, not even for pure carnal pleasure.

“Please, Justice.” He gulped. “Don’t do this to me."

“I want that one,” Lady Jane said.

Armande was the owner of the most exclusive full service salon in the city-state of New York. In the reconstruction after the great collapse, the new noble class demanded services befitting their status. Sharp entrepreneurs like Armande created salons to fill those demands. A woman could get everything from a pleasure slave to a manicure to a new hat in Armande’s salon, if she was willing to pay top dollar for all three.

“But, my dear Lady Jane,” Armande said, “Will is not merchandise. He is my employee.”

“I know Will’s not a slave, but I want him. Every time I come in, his pretty eyes watch me. And when he fits me for a new pair of shoes, his impertinent hands touch my feet much more than is proper.” The lady watched the tall, slender, dark-haired man with a neatly trimmed goatee as he served drinks to a small group of ladies. His wry comments made them laugh and flutter, and he acknowledged their appreciation with a shy smile.

“Please forgive any small improprieties on his part. I’ll have him fired if you wish, but making him a slave…” The pretentious man with a French accent from Brooklyn shook his head. “Even if he were for sale, he’s not pleasure slave material. Wouldn’t you rather have that one? He is a handsome specimen, non?” Armande gestured to a man chained to a pedestal as living art, dressed only in a collar and a dazzling smile.

“Far too full of himself. Let some woman who wants to have something decorative on her arm for social functions buy him and spoil him rotten. I want your clerk and I will pay handsomely for him.”

“It is illegal to make a free citizen a slave, milady.” Armande grinned slyly. “A respectable slave dealer like myself would…”

Lady Jane wrote a figure down. It was twice the asking price of the slave with the bright smile.
Armande’s greedy eyes widened. “Of course, I would certainly be willing to go that extra mile for a client of your caliber.”

Lady Jane smiled. “I want him delivered tonight.” She turned her back on Armande, dismissing him.

Before their souls had been opened to the true nature of their former enemies, both she and the hunter had committed heinous crimes against the other. How could she punish this fallen man when she could see herself in his eyes? Feel his sorrow, his self-loathing, as her own? How could she end him when she knew just what terrible lesson he had learned?

"Get up," she snapped, venting some of her frustration and confusion so it wouldn't incinerate her from within.

Armand D'Atellio, king of vampire slayers, remained curled into a fetal ball, hands over his face as if to block the visions of his crimes, weeping like a broken child.

"Why won't you kill me?" he cried, once again hitting her with those gut-wrenching eyes. "I would kill you!"

An ironic smirk touched her lips. "No you wouldn't. Not anymore." She nodded to her guards. "Take him to my bedchamber and leave him there."

Jake never saw her move, and yet, she suddenly had him up against the wall, one tiny hand around his throat, holding him up off the floor with his feet dangling. Spots whirled around the edges of his vision, but he could still see that her face had changed. The sweet roundness that had so drawn him before had shifted to sharp planes and harsh edges. She snarled loudly, flashing more fangs than he thought should be possible in such a tiny, delicious mouth.

He was harder than ever -- an irony that made the civilized man in him cringe a little. What was it they always said about sex and violence? Nataya knew the effect she was having. She crushed her lush little body against him even as she choked out his life. She pressed the side of her face to his, and drew a long, wet line over the edge of his ear with her cool tongue. He shivered more violently than ever, and still not from fear.

"Now do you believe me?" she purred, raising goosebumps over every inch of his body.

Alex pulled up to the five story apartment complex in an unmarked van. She turned off the engine and retrieved the suitcases from the back storage. The larger suitcase held two levels: real plumbing equipment on the top and an unassembled sniper rifle under a foam cover in the bottom. The second suitcase housed another set of plumbing tools. Stepping out of the van, she slammed the door. A dark green shirt and matching shorts covered her curvaceous build, both rolled up to reveal her warm, glowing complexion. She'd lightly covered her body in lavender oil, hoping it would distract her target enough for her to get the job done.

She started toward the front of the complex. Her Browning Hi-Power nestled in her boot and tapped against her leg. This would be a quick job. Get in and get out unnoticed. She pressed the call button next to the typed name beneath the plastic covered panel: BOB DILLAR.

"What?" The voice came from a window on the side of the building.

Alex craned her head and looked up to the third story window. She raised her sunglasses to meet the stranger's gaze. Smiling, she put the charm on full force.

"Bob Dillar?"

His scrunched expression softened once he saw her. He smiled, revealing a set of ragged teeth. Some shone bright silver, clashing with those of an ivory yellow stain.

"That's me, baby. What can I do for you?"

"I'm here to check the plumbing in your apartment. We got a call you were having problems."

"Oh, yeah. Yeah. You don't look like a plumber from where I'm standing, though." The man winked and smiled. His charm was definitely on full force.

Alex shrugged to downplay the attempt at sexual tension. "Blame my father for giving me a love for water pressure at a young age."

He chuckled and ran a hand over his slick, gelled black hair. "Well, come on up. I'll give you a little tour."

The door buzzed. Alex collected her items and entered the building. Nice complex. Not a place she'd expected this Bob Dillar character to live, but nowadays, anything was possible. A man stood at the front desk talking to the caretaker. Walking toward the elevator, Alex tried to keep an eye on the pathway to the door, but the visitor kept her attention.

Tall, nicely built, a slight tan with neck-length, silky brown hair. He turned around, and their eyes locked like magnets through stylish, dark designer shades. He removed them, his stance cool and relaxed, his face structured with a strong, defined jaw line. His mesmerizing eyes denoted model-worthy good looks, and those eyes awoke a spirit within her that had been dormant for months. She wanted him, the attraction like an electric storm of fire in the coldness of her heart.

The loud ding of the elevator snapped her back to reality. She shook her head to focus back on the job at hand. There wasn't any time for this now. She couldn't be distracted.

Alex broke the gaze and rushed into the elevator hoping the doors wouldn't stall. Alone now, she exhaled, realizing she'd held her breath the entire time. She was here to do a job, not get sidetracked by a pretty face. Go in as soon as possible and get out even quicker. She inhaled and exhaled a few times and slowed her breathing.

"Easy girl," she said.

Alex tapped the '3' button, and the elevator ascended. She knelt down and began the usual preparations. Retrieving the gun from her black boot, she slipped it into the hidden holster at her hip for easier access. The elevator chimed once again, and the doors opened. She peeked out of the elevator, relieved to see the area devoid of people. A long, slightly dingy oriental throw rug in putrid green, red, and beige lined the hall in front of shiny white doors. She picked up her cases and walked along the hall, keeping an eye on the descending numbers hanging on the doors. 25...24...23.... 22. Bingo.

Alex cleared her mind, took a breath, and knocked on the door. Footsteps pattered on the other side, pursued by loud whispers. Orders were given, and a whispered argument followed. Her adrenaline spiked to full alert as the footsteps approached the door. The light on the peephole eclipsed before the door opened just enough to give her a full view of Bob Dillar, a pale man dressed in a thin, close-cropped tank top and beige pants around three sizes too big. He flashed his tainted smile again.

"Welcome, pretty lady plumber."

She chuckled. "You can show me where the problem is now."

"I would, but you see, it was a problem I reported days ago. A gentleman from Root Plumbing came by with a van much like yours. Only it had the company name on the side with a little blue wave logo under it." He gestured the lines of the design in the air. "So either you guys got your jobs crossed up back there, or you're not really who you say you are. And judging from that van and the call I made while you made your way up here, I'm thinking it's more the latter."

Okay, stay calm. This situation is easily adaptable. Just need a Plan B.

Dillar reached to his side, out of her view. And pointed a pistol in her direction. Alex stepped back and launched a kick, knocking the weapon from his hand. Another kick to his torso sent his body flying across the front room of the apartment. She stepped inside. The click of a barrel sounded to her right, and she turned. A man aimed a large grenade launcher right at her. Quick to retrieve her gun, she fired, knocking the man backwards, but not before he fired off one solid round.

Alex turned and dove outside the door, an explosion of red and orange fire breaking through the apartment, following her into the hall. She hit the side of the wall with a brute force that rendered her body limp. Her eyes grew heavy, and the heat of the explosion rose around her. The last sound she heard was the distant chime of the elevator doors opening and the thumping of footsteps coming toward her.

He reached out to tuck a stray piece of her hair into one of the bundles of pins. “Come away with me.”
She slapped his hand away. “No.”

“Please, Luna. It’s unbearable without you. I’ve missed you more than I can say, it’s why I could never write you or even send a whispercall. Come away with me. You’ve never even been more than two towns over. This world...this world is so very big and beautiful and terrible, and you need to see it.”

“So you want me to ignore my sisters? Forget my responsibilities? I will not do it, Aldwyn.”

“No. I want you to leave this,” he said, pressing a small, heavy velvet bag into her hand, “on your baking table with a note to your family and a note to Randhir that you can’t marry him. Here is what I’m fairly sure is twice as much as your settlement, to be split however they see fit for the inconvenience of losing you. Then I want you to take a position as one of my crew on my aereship.”

She bit her lip. "But what of my sisters?"

"This money will shield them from your doings, you know that as well as I do. They’ll still be able to go away to school or work in your family’s bakery. It will be of their choosing. Hell, Clarisse can marry Randhir herself, she’s always had aspirations."

“You...you own a ‘ship?”

“A small one, but yes. I do.”

“This is a terrible idea....”

“Everything we’ve ever done that was worth doing has been a terrible idea.”

“That doesn’t make it any less of a terrible idea.”

“You’ve stopped saying no.”

“But I haven’t said yes,” Luna said, biting her lip. “I don’t know that I can do this.” She had never even thought of ever being on an aereship before or of anything that didn’t involve life in her little town. She always loved looking at the maps that Aldwyn’s father and brothers made on their aereship, and she and Aldwyn would pretend that various boulders were ‘ships when they were small, mapping adventures to all kinds of foreign lands that she only knew anything about from the small gifts his brothers would bring her. The Aelanic doll, the Elixeir bracelets. She had never even been to d’Terre. She had always assumed she would spend all her days here, baking. There was never any reason to think otherwise. And now....

And now.

A small thrill coursed through her blood.

“And you won’t know until you try. And if you don’t want it, then just say the word, and I will return you to Stonewall to pursue whatever kind of life you would want to lead.”

“This is a lot of money, Aldwyn—”

“I don’t want you to have any regrets whatsoever.”

They stood in silence for many long moments. “I still don’t understand why you’ve come for me,” she said finally. She felt the weight of his stare and brought her weddinggown-green eyes up to meet his.

“I need you with me,” he said simply.

She nodded and then slowly and carefully untied her apron and folded it up far more neatly than she ever had before. “Hurry, before I change my mind.”

She spotted the handsome stranger across the parking lot. Dark hair, arresting eyes, tall muscular body encased in a snug-fitting long-sleeved t-shirt and blue jeans. She observed him approach the concession stand and order. She kept her eyes on him, heard her children call to their friends. Moisture pooled inside her core, and her nipples tightened, imagining what it would be like to see him naked. God, it had been a long time since she’d reacted this way to a man!

He turned toward her, and their eyes met. He tossed a kernel of yellow corn into his mouth; she dropped her eyes and continued on toward the bleachers. She spotted her son, already engaged in baseball practice, and spoke to several of the parents while edging through the crowd. But her mind was on the dark-haired stranger. Who was he? Was he another parent? Coach? Recent high school grad? Boyfriend of one of the teenage girls? She decided to take in the high school girls’ softball game and climbed to the top bleacher, nodding to a teacher she knew.

“Hey there, Mr. Castle, how long did it take the cheerleaders to understand the Pythagorean Theorem?” A body landed next to her, and her breath caught in her throat, recognizing the stranger who’d made her crazy with sexual fantasies. Her breath caught when their knees bumped. His voice burned into her brain, and she knew she had to find the courage to speak to him.

The balding teacher turned around and shook his hand. “Lord help us if Emily Mason ever decides to be an architect.”

“I know Emily. I helped her with her Algebra three years ago. Did she really always mark her test papers with ‘b’ or ‘c’?” She leaned forward to insert herself into the conversation. Her knees shook, and she hoped she sounded coherent.

The stranger laughed, turning his intense, milk chocolate brown eyes her way. “That’s Miss Mason. She was convinced all the correct answers could be found on her boyfriend’s test paper. Or if by choosing ‘b’ most of the time, she at least improved her odds of getting it right.”

Her brain screamed for her to do something to get him alone. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a fly ball approach and grabbed for it, but the stranger had also reached out to catch it. They crashed into each other, and she landed unceremoniously in his lap with his arms around her waist, inches from her breasts.

Electricity arced between them, along with the bulge in his denim.

“Oh I’m sorry! Did I hurt you?” Dumb question; that’s not a gun in his pocket!

She eased herself up, sweeping away the spilt popcorn. “Let me buy you another bag of popcorn.”

“No, no. That’s not necessary.” “Please, I insist. You can buy a bottle of water.” What the hell possessed you to say that? Water? Why not a soda?

“Lead the way.”

* * * *

He’d noticed the curvy, blue-eyed woman with the flowing hair watching him earlier and his body tightened. She seemed to be totally unaware of the way her hips swayed beneath her leggings and oversize sweatshirt. Or was she? His experience told him she wasn’t, but then again, she hadn’t glanced back to see if he was looking. She climbed to the top of the bleachers and sat behind one of his colleagues. Who was she? Definitely too young to be a parent of one of the high school girls. Maybe a parent of one of the smaller children on the other ball diamonds? He vaguely remembered seeing her with two small children…damn. She had to be married. Her familiarity with the teacher surprised him, and a flash of jealousy scorched his body. He wanted to see that dazzling smile directed at him, to run his hands through that mane of curls wafting over her shoulders in the breeze.

Unable to contain himself, he vaulted up the bleachers and planted himself in the spot beside her. The scent of her floral perfume hit his nostrils and he forced himself to ignore her and tease his colleague about a group of students. He tried to maintain his composure; what he wanted to do was grab her and claim that rosebud mouth for himself.

Her gentle voice joined the conversation. He turned to look at her, and his throat went dry. Suppressed passion burned in her dark blue eyes. And then a foul ball flew toward them. They both reached for it, but it flew overhead. She landed in his lap, crushing his erection painfully against his leg. He dropped his popcorn and grabbed at her waist, his hand brushing her breasts. Her mouth fell open, and it took enormous amounts of self-control not to kiss her right then and there. Time slowed; images of stripping her naked ran through his brain. He released her and agreed to accompany her to the concession stand. Hell no, he didn’t want popcorn. He wanted her, wet and willing, his hard cock plundering her soft pussy over and over until they were both sweaty and satisfied.

He shook the haze clouding his brain to check her left hand. No ring. Was she divorced, then? Separated? Baby-sitting? Dozens of scenarios raced through his brain. Halfway to the stand, he asked her. And was jubilant when the answer was single.

“Well then…what say you we skip the stand and get a cup of better coffee in town?” Town was two blocks away from the school.

She hesitated. “My kids have practice until two, but they know I sometimes go up to the coffee shop and to wait for me at the van.”

“I’ll have you back by then.” He steered her to his car, but touching her had been a mistake. When he opened the door for her, she turned to look at him, and suddenly they were in each other’s arms. Her hands found their way inside his shirt, cool against his hot skin. He slid his over her backside, caressing the curves encased in spandex. He pulled her closer and rocked his pelvis against hers. Roughly, he dragged his mouth from hers and told her to get in.

Instead of driving to the coffee shop, he drove the opposite way to a deserted country road.

Dierdre was still beside him, her hands brushing Sean’s arm. He jerked back, but not before the female offered a grin.

“Keep your hands off my mate, you bitch.”

“He’s mine,” snarled the shewolf.

Caden shrugged, moving onto the balls of her feet. She considered dumping her heels, but decided they may just give her the advantage. The wolven female wore sensible, soft-soled shoes. The bitch’s kicks would be soft, though solid. Caden’s would hurt more, but might not knock her as far. But most never understood the power of a well-made stiletto. A well-placed heel could be as painful as a bullet.

“I don’t know what you think you’re getting out of this, but you’re going down. Here and now,” Caden taunted her, waiting for the first strike. Caden knew Dierdre was measuring her weaknesses, just as she watched Dierdre’s. Someone tossed the shewolf a branch. The wood was a foot longer than Caden’s cane, but was made of pine. Pine was one of the weakest woods there was. One good hit, and it would break.

Dierdre charged. She swung her branch, and Caden countered. The thrust was powerful, and Caden’s arms shuddered beneath the power of the strike. Bark flew from the female’s staff, showering Caden, with bits falling toward her eyes. She grunted, blinking away the debris, and holding the shewolf back.

When Tyler knocked on Jake’s door, said assistant, a new, doe-eyed, fresh-out-of-school kid with blond hair hanging in his pale face, opened it, muttered something about being delivered, and scampered from the room. Tyler couldn’t help but notice he had already ditched his jacket and his tie was crooked

“What did you do to that poor thing?” he asked, setting Jake’s coffee on his desk.

The other man was standing at the window glaring down at the traffic. “Took you bloody long enough.” He snatched up the coffee and punched the tab open. “I haven’t done anything to him. Yet.”

“Maynard’s going to have a fit if you scare off another assistant.”

“Maynard can—”

“Go fuck myself?” Maynard’s voice held just enough sarcasm to bite.

Both Jake and Tyler turned as their boss entered the room.

“Morning, boys,” Maynard said.

Tyler nodded; Jake glared.

“I just had a conversation with Adam, Jake.”

Jake grunted and turned back to the window.

“If you might refrain from molesting your assistants, it would be appreciated.”

“Excuse me?” Tyler took a small step forward. “I’m sure there’s some misunderstand—”

“It was a little tap on the ass,” Jake said. “He needs to get over himself. Send him back here, Maynard. I’ll behave.”

“I’d appreciate it.” Maynard turned to Tyler. “And you. I want to talk to you about Steven Jessop’s party tonight. I’ll come by your office.”

Tyler managed to hold in the heavy sigh he felt building. “Sure. I’ll be there in a few.”

Maynard left, and Tyler waited a beat, hoping Jake might explain what had just happened. When the silence stretched, he finally spoke up. “Tap on the ass?”

“You need to not make a thing over this, Ty.”

“I’ll be in my office.” Tyler took his coffee and his pricked ego and left Jake staring out the window.

His gut told him there was more than one grope behind Adam’s hasty retreat, but his head told his gut to shut the fuck up and get to work. He had no interest in his heart pleading not to be a damn fool. Instead, he buried himself so deeply in a new ad campaign that Maynard’s knock on his open door a half hour later made him jump.

“Tyler. Got a minute?”

“No.”

“About this party. I assume you’re going?” Maynard sauntered in and perched on the corner of the desk. His cheek pinched up the corner of Tyler’s draft, causing a pulse of irritation to pump through Tyler and leave behind a grimace.

“Maybe.”

“Well, go. I want you to feel Jessop out. Or up. Whatever it takes. He has a lot of advertising money to spend, and I want him to spend it here. Get him to consider our firm, sell him on us, and the account’s yours.”

“And here I thought you were just out to take a load off my mind. Tell me to go out, have fun, relax.”

“‘Scuse me?”

“Nothing.”

“Good. Let me know how it goes.” He didn’t wait for a response, no doubt fully expecting Tyler to just agree. At the door, he stopped, turning with a twisted smile on his face. “And have fun, Tyler. Maybe even get laid. Be good for you.”

Jackass.
