SPURRED TO SUBMISSION by Desiree Holt

SPURRED TO SUBMISSION by Desiree Holt

Rawhide Series

When the death of their fathers brings Zoe Hampton and Wade Cameron back to Big Spur, she hopes for two things—to show the hot shot New York lawyer she’s not a little girl anymore and that the ranch he hates could actually ease the pain of his past. She’s got her work cut out for her on both accounts, and she doesn’t know whether to kick Wade into next week or jump his bones.

Wade hates the ranch almost as much as he hated his father, and the only reason he’s home is to bury one and sell the other. But the old man’s will puts a hitch in Wade’s plans. And Zoe’s lush body and sassy attitude spur the Dom in him to take her over his knee for a spanking they’ll both enjoy. Even finding release at a private BDSM club becomes impossible.…until the night Zoe follows Wade to Rawhide.

“Will tells me we’ve got a good crop of calves to brand this year.”

Wade’s voice behind her startled her out of her reverie, and she lost her balance, tumbling into the pen. Before she could get to her feet, he had climbed in beside her and stood looking down at her.

She spit dust from her mouth and glowered at him. “Aren’t you even going to offer to help me up? Or did you just come out here to rub my face in the fate of the ranch again? Make up your mind, Wade. I’m too old to play games and tired of sparring with you.”

“Maybe not my kind of games,” he growled.

He stared down at her then stunned her by lowering his body over hers, his legs bracketing her hips as he knelt in the dirt. His long fingers wrapped around her wrists, holding them down to either side of her head, imprisoning her. His grip was so tight as to be painful, and it shocked her that his aggression gave her pleasure.

Wade bent low over her until his face was only inches away. His eyes darkened to the color of burnt chocolate again, and a muscle ticked in his cheek. He wasn’t as unaffected as he wanted her to think. That kiss yesterday might have been meant to frighten her, just as he was trying to do now, but it was very clear he was affected, too. Probably more than he wanted to acknowledge.

Instead of struggling, Zoe lay on the ground beneath him, waiting to see what he’d do next.

“You know what I’d like to do to you, little girl?” he ground out.

“What?” The word came out in a breathy rush of air. “What would you like to do to me, Wade?”

“Things that would scare the shit out of you.”

He was holding her forcibly in place, apparently unaware she wasn’t attempting to get up. He was holding most of his weight on his knees so he didn’t crush her, but she was essentially completely helpless. His crotch was practically at eye level, and there was no mistaking the prominent bulge. Oh, yeah. He was as hard as she was instantly wet.

“You think so?” She licked her lower lip, seeing the heat flare in his eyes again and knowing she was pulling the tiger’s tail. “You might be surprised.”

He stared at her for so long she wondered if he ever planned to speak or move. Without warning, he rose to his feet, pulling her with him. Imprisoning her wrists with one hand, he swept her over his shoulder and stomped into the barn. He carried her into the tack room and slammed the door shut, sliding the bolt into place to keep it locked.

“Big talker,” he ground out. “Let’s see where that big talk gets you.”

Nicky heard Chris mutter something under his breath, but she kept walking toward the foyer of her home. If he didn't want to leave, he shouldn't have ended what was the sexiest damn kiss she'd had in thirteen years. Of course, she had no plans to actually let the too-honorable-for-his-own-good man walk out her front door. He was back in town to stay, and she was staking her claim on him tonight.

She stopped by the main staircase and hung his leather jacket on the mahogany newel post. Then wiping the huge grin off her face--something Chris wouldn't appreciate under these circumstances--she turned to meet his disgruntled gaze. "Thank you for the pizza and wine."

Chris nodded. His expression was pleasant, but a vein ticked in his temple.

Gesturing to the snow-battered windows in her nearby living room, she continued. "Looks like the weather's gotten worse. Could be a dangerous drive back to your place. Did you say Holly is sleeping over at your parents' house tonight?"

He nodded again, a mix of hope and amused suspicion flickering in his eyes. Maybe she wasn't so skilled at presenting a poker face.

"Well," Nicky glanced at the nails of one hand in an exaggerated show of nonchalance, "then I guess you have two choices." She met his gaze again, her lips curving despite her efforts to control them. "You can put on your jacket and head out, your virtue intact. Or...you can come upstairs and show me your tan lines."

He made a grab for her and she danced away, laughing. Chris put his hands on his hips and smiled. "You had me going there, brat. I thought you were throwing me out." He pointed to the floor in front of him. "Come here and kiss me."

"Like I'd take orders from some surfer-dude lawyer." Whirling, she charged up the staircase with Chris on her heels. Nicky made it almost halfway to the second floor before he caught her and lifted her into his arms. It was like flying. The autumn of their senior year, he'd picked her up just like this, then thrown her into a pile of leaves they'd raked together. Those had been such wonderful times. Tonight they'd make even better memories.

She circled his neck with her arms as he took the rest of the stairs two at a time.

When he reached the upstairs hallway, Chris asked, "Which room?"

Nicky tugged on the hair at his nape. "Put me down before you get a hernia."

Lowering his head, he nibbled her ear. "You're a flyweight, Nickels. And unless you want our first time together as adults to be against this wall right here, you better tell me which room."

A delicious full-body shudder ran through her, one that literally knocked off her fuzzy slippers. "Why don't we save the wall 'til next time." She pointed down the dark corridor. "Last room on the right."

“I’m twenty-eight years old, own my own home, run a very successful bookstore, and have an active life. I’m happy. Why do I need a man in my life?”

“I’m not saying you need a man.” Kara leaned against the front counter and regarded her. “I’m saying you need sex. All this pent up energy you have needs to be released. Sex is a great stress reliever.”

She tried to ignore Kara’s steely gaze as she passed her and sat behind the counter. “I’m not having this conversation with you again.”

“I’ve found this dating site.” Kara held up a hand to stop Zalia’s displeased groan. “I promise it’s not dodgy. A friend of my cousin’s used it and found her soul mate.”

“Oh, well, then it must be legit,” Zalia scoffed.

“Honestly, it is. The owner, Madame Evangeline, has a knack for bringing people together. She’s recently started taking clients in Australia. She gets your details, organizes a meeting, and you do the rest. Hint, hint.” Kara winked and slid a business card across the counter. “If she can’t help you, then we’ll take it as a sign, and I’ll let you grow old and live with a dozen cats. But if she does find you a match, you have to follow through.”

Zalia picked up the business card. 1NightStand and Madame Evangeline were printed in bold on the front. On the back was a web address. Nothing more. “This is the business card of a ‘legit’ dating service?”

Kara rolled her eyes and walked toward the front door. “Go to the website and fill out the form. If you don’t, I will. I’m going to the bank; I’ll be back in half an hour.”

Zalia spun the business card between her fingers and bit the inside of her lip hesitantly. Butterflies thudded in her stomach as she considered emailing this “Madame Evangeline”. After a few moments of contemplation, she flicked the computer monitor on and opened her email. One email—it couldn’t hurt, could it?
