A strand of pearls.
I had no idea the minor comment I'd made would make such a difference in my life. Zeke and I weren't exactly talking much. Hell, we weren't in the same room that often. Married ten years, and the sex was almost gone. It sucked, but then again, we'd known each other since grade school. It wasn't like we'd had a whole lot of time apart.
We made a good match. Complemented each other and all that.
So what was the minor comment I'd made?
"Pearls are so classic. Sophisticated, demure, sexy... I'd love a set of real pearls. Someday."
I had no idea Zeke had even paid attention to me. We got in ruts so much. Presentations, lesson plans, overtime, and the need for a good night's rest always seemed to take priority over sex. Then there was the arguing. Whatever one of us did, the other had an issue with it. We really needed some alone time or some time doing each other.
I'd pretty much given up on him, on us being anything more than roommates. Yeah, I was guilty of ignoring the signs he wanted to make love. Damned sleep -- who needed it, right?
Work that day sucked. Nothing seemed to go the way I'd planned. Jammed copier, students using my paints to leave murals on the bathroom walls, a teachers' meeting I'd forgotten about. Yeah, it was rotten, especially for a freaking Tuesday. I don't believe in saying things could be worse, but that day was bad. I got home and kicked off my heels. All I wanted was a glass of chardonnay and a Humphrey Bogart movie fest.
With the wine glass in hand, I plopped down onto the couch and propped my feet up on the coffee table. Did I want to watch television? Might be something on pay-per-view worth watching, something with a man and a woman and a vibrator.
My pussy clenched and cream coated my panties. A little finger action sounded divine. A nice release for a long day, especially if Zeke had to work late -- again.
I went in search of the remote. As per normal I couldn't find the damned thing, but I did find something else. The box. A good six inches square, green paper with a bright blue bow standing proudly on top.
I bit the inside of my cheek. I could open it, but there wasn't a name on the box. I toyed with my ring and contemplated what the hell I was going to do. Not opening the box was like a new form of torture. Yes, I'm a nosy person. Why do you ask?
My phone buzzed beside me. I glanced at the lit-up screen. One new text. Swell. What had I forgotten this time? At least the message was from Zeke.
"Open your present."
My present? Well, allrighty then. I love a good surprise. I
thought about sending him a thank you. Nah, I'd wait until I saw what it was. He could be a sweetheart or he could be the devil himself. I took a deep breath, let it out slowly, and grabbed the box.
