EXCERPT:

“I don’t drink, but could use a strong one, right now. Not this sissy stuff.” He lifted the glass to his lips, downed the contents, and shoved his now-empty champagne flute away before he leaned in toward her. The smell of alcohol on his breath hinted that he’d already had too much to drink. “Know anyone around here with some whiskey?” The dark sapphire of his eyes chilled her. This was a man used to getting what he wanted. “I’d even share.” His voice deepened and became husky with his offer and she shivered.

“I don’t drink with men I don’t know.” Debra stuck out her hand. “I’m Debra, and you are?”

The man grabbed another glass of champagne off a passing waiter’s tray and guzzled the drink in one swallow. “The name’s Johnson O’Neill. Now about that whiskey.” He reached out and drew her up to standing then tugged her in close to him. Wrapping his arm around her back, he moved her body in a slow two-step motion.

Debra gazed into his eyes. “You don’t have to seduce me for the whiskey.” She stepped out of his embrace and put her hands on her hips. She frowned.

“That’s not why I drew you into my arms. You were tapping your foot when I arrived—and I thought you might like a dance. A pretty woman like you shouldn’t be sitting alone.” He stretched his palm out again in a plea.

Blurb:

Can two people, one horse and the power of love cure a little girl?

Angela French blames herself for her daughter’s lack of voice. Determined to do anything to correct the situation, she seeks out Jake Kyncade, the owner of The Heartsong Ranch.

Jake Kyncade hides his own sorrows behind his no-nonsense demeanor. Helping children becomes one way to correct his past. Using equine therapy, he sets out to make a difference.

Can Jake help Angela’s dreams come true or will Jake’s past bring more heartache? Will love save them all?

Excerpt:

With Taylor asleep on the couch, Angela snuck the magazine out of her daughter’s sleeping hands before carrying her to her bed. After making sure her baby was tucked in, she turned out the lights and went to the kitchen. She sat down at the table to study the article about the horse whisperer. The photos gave off a peaceful feeling—so much so, she longed to jump into the images. Along with the horses, there were shots of children laughing and petting the animals. The article mentioned a little boy with Down’s Syndrome whose language increased after a week of animal therapy. The Heartsong Ranch. Even the name sounds encouraging. Dare I get my hopes up?

One photo in particular captured her attention. The owner, Jake Kyncade, wore jeans and a cowboy hat as he stood next to the ranch sign. She took a deep breath as butterflies circled in her abdomen. He’s sexy. Very different from Mike. Mr. Kyncade has this wounded look in his eyes. I wonder what his trauma was. I’ve gotten better at noticing it in others. Still, he’s good looking. Probably married with his own children.

Excerpt:

When my cell phone rings. I look down.
It’s Steve and I don’t want to answer. I’m on a date with my husband. The children are safe with Steve. I—we—deserve this time together. Pushing the off button, I ignore the call.

“Was that Steve?”

Alex understands my dilemma. My ex has anger issues and isn’t happy that I’ve remarried. The phone rings again.

“I’ll call him back later.”

I cut a small piece of beef burgundy from my plate and lift it gently to Alex’s lips.

Feeding each other is a very sensual experience. My legs tingle. I watched his tongue dart out to catch a drop of sauce lingering on his mouth. I reach across the table to run my thumb over his lips then pull his face close to mine in search of a passionate kiss.

When my phone rings for the third time, I know it must be important. “Hello?”

“Scotty and Mac were playing around when Scotty tripped and fell, hitting his head on the corner of the door frame to his room. We’re on our way to the urgent care. He probably needs stitches.”

“Which urgent care are you going to? I can meet you there.” My stomach clenches in anxiety.

I obtain all the details while Alex pays the bill and has our food wrapped to go. We rush out into the night, our romantic evening ruined, fright replacing passion.

Guilt begins to eat at me. Why didn’t I answer the phone sooner? How is Scotty handling things? What kind of parent am I to put myself over my child? Alex seems to understand what I am feeling and reaches over to hold my hand. Without saying a word, his touch makes me feel better.

~Excerpt~

Mac sat at the beautiful mahogony bar nursing his first beer. I’m more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory. The last place he belonged was somewhere as opulant as this. He ran his fingers up and down the condensation on the beer glass. Even though he grew up in a family with a great deal of money, his parents taught him the benefit of working hard and doing what you love. At eighty, his dad still worked in the stables every morning, grooming his horse or was out in the pasture feeding the cattle.

Claire never understood his family. Money wasn’t important to them unless the cash could be used to befit someone else. Mac shook his head. Sure, he used his family’s money to get inside some of those war-torn countries but only so he could show the world the truth.

He’d worked hard to be impartial but his soft heart swayed him. Seeing any amount of suffering hurt, making him known as a compassionate emmisary in those challenging countries.

With Claire gone, his life had changed once again. He took a job as a reporter at the local station affilliate, reporting on the important events happening in his community so he could be at home with Todd. Realizing how much poverty and conflict existed in his own hometown left him cold. They say charity begins at home. Well, he was determined to find a way to help, while setting a good example for his son.

He took a look at the clock on the wall. Where was she? Maybe she took one look at him and ran for the hills.

Mac turned on his barstool in time to see a gorgeous brunette walk into the bar. Her steps seemed to match the beat of his pulse. Shifting in his chair, he adjusted his now tight, uncomfortable pants. Maybe it’s a good thing he was meeting a woman tonight, if she shows.

He twisted his stool around farther to get a better look at the hottie.

If only she was his date. The woman’s blue dress hugged her curvy body and he couldn’t take his gaze off those legs that seemed to go on forever.

Oh no!

One minute she remained all grace, next her poise went down the drain as her shoe broke. Mac lurched to his feet and ran over to help the stunning woman.

“Are you hurt?” He reached his hand out to help but instead of the tears he expected, Mac heard laughter coming from under the waterfall of hair which hid her face. He ached to touch the burnished bronze length. She reminds me of Dad’s favorite colt, a little skittish but feisty. I like spirited women.

Not wanting to see her sitting there on the floor, Mac scooped her up in his arms.Whoa. She was like a foal, all legs, and she fit perfectly in his arms. He could hold her all day.

“Sir, is the woman okay?” The bartender stood in front of Mac. He couldn’t tell if the guy wanted to grab her out of his arms for himself or to protect his hotel from a lawsuit.

Mac couldn’t help but growl like a dog defending his territory. “I haven’t checked yet. She appears fine. Why don’t you get her a glass of water?” Anything to get rid of him. He wanted to keep her in his arms.

Mac pulled her close to his chest. At the thought of letting her go, his heartbeat sped up. Maybe I can convince her to have a drink with me. He reluctantly set her down in a chair at one of the bar tables.

“Are you okay?” Mac brushed the hair back from her face.

The strands felt like silk between his fingers. Images of brushing this woman’s hair while they lay naked on the bed danced through his mind. Reluctantly, Mac pulled his hand from her and took a deep breath. He didn’t understand what had come over him. He didn’t have this strong of a reaction when he met Claire.

Like uncovering a present on Christmas morning, he could hardly wait to see her face. He watched as the woman lifted her head to meet his gaze. Mesmerized by the light dusting of freckles across the woman’s nose, his breath stopped. Her beautiful green eyes sparkled with merriment. Her tantalizing laughter danced across his skin making his slacks already tight very uncomfortable.

~Excerpt~

Driving my Jeep down the Ohio Turnpike, gave me a lot of time to think. Unless you count the many big rigs, there wasn’t much to look at while driving.  The flat boring landscape was occasionally dotted with farmhouses or cows. Having left behind the small town life, I was nervous about coming home. Isn’t that funny?  Chicago has been my home for the last fifteen years, yet that small town, Amherst, was still considered my HOME. I don’t know what scared me more…coming back to a small town after having escaped it or facing the demons that caused me to leave.

When Dad called me on the phone last week, he sounded so exhausted.  It scared me.  My memories of my Dad were of a robust man with a wicked sense of humor.  When we were children, he would chase us around the house just trying to catch us to tickle us.  He was the person who taught each of us girls how to shoot, ice fish, and ride our bikes. We stood on his feet as he twirled us around the room to old Dean Martin songs teaching us to dance.  When I was older, Dad was the formidable bear that boyfriends had to get passed in order to date us. I had only seen him cry once…at my mother’s funeral. In other words, he was our first hero that sadly no other man could measure up to.

This man, who had worked in the steel mills and had scared away many a boyfriend, was older now and needed me.  There was no question I would go home.  That is what family is for.  As the oldest, it was my job to come home and help out. But I also had the career that would allow me to move back to Ohio and be there for Dad. My four sisters were wrapped up in various enterprises, trying to establish themselves in their careers and getting situated in new homes.  After all, I could run my jewelry website and store from Amherst as easily as I could from Chicago.

Deciding to take a drive through town before heading to Dad’s, I exited the turnpike and headed left towards Lake Erie. Driving past so many memories unleashed the ghosts of my past: good times and bad.

~Excerpt~

Dressing for another long day as a receptionist at a local pediatrician’s office, I went to rouse my children. There's something profound about watching your child sleep. Not wanting to wake them but knowing that our time in the morning is limited before work and school, I playfully mussed the boys’ hair and called their names.

“Scotty? Mac? Wake up. Come on you two, time to rise and shine. After all, it is cold and flu season!”

As the boys wiped the dreams from their eyes, I smiled and watched them come aware of the world around them. Their little furrowed brows showed they had to adjust to which house they were in. With Steve’s house being the home they grew up in and my apartment being smaller, they were shuttled back and forth each week so we both got a chance to be parents. That was important to both of us. Neither Steve nor I wanted to live without our children.

I was lucky. The kids came first in our lives and wanted for nothing. We had done something right, even though we could hardly talk to each other without fighting.

The morning routine over, I arrived at the office and set about getting ready for a day filled with sick, screaming children, frustrated parents, and a gallon of hand-sanitizer. Never failing to disappoint, the phone began ringing off the hook around eight o’clock.

Starting the first of the many pots of coffee for the day, I tidied up the staff room. Chloe walked in and put her purse in the closet. “Looks like it’ll be a busy day!” Tall and regal in an Angelina Jolie sort of way, Chloe was everything I wasn’t. She would’ve been easy to hate if she wasn’t so darn easy to love. Another divorced mom, she understood exactly where I was in the healing process. She'd remarried a couple of years ago and now wanted everyone to be happily married. “You should've come with us to the bar last night,” Chloe entreated. “There were so many cute guys there!”

“You aren’t supposed to be noticing cute guys,” I teased.

“Oh, Mike was there and you can’t have him. But there were other hot guys.” Chloe and Mike met when her own marriage ended. Mike had been her cooking teacher at a local community college class. Chloe decided culinary skills would improve her marriageability. And while the class did nothing to improve her cooking, it did land her Mike’s heart.

Excerpt from Forever Love:

Dad was apparently running the vacuum in the living room, based upon the loud and annoying sound coming from downstairs. I listened with half an ear to the noise, idly wondering why the vacuum was so loud. A high-pitched whine came from downstairs, followed by the smell of smoke. Was that the fire alarm? What was going on?

I ran down the stairs to the living room, barely able to see through the haze of smoke. “Dad? Where are you?!” I screamed over the noise of the smoke alarm and vacuum.

Hearing a coughing noise coming from the kitchen, I ran into the room to see flames coming from the oven and my father using a towel to try to put them out. “Dad, we need to go. We need to call the fire department.” I pulled my dad toward the door and grabbed the cell phone out of my pocket.

“Hello, we have a fire at 224 West Front Street. Please send someone right away.”

Within minutes, the firemen arrived and set to work putting out the fire. I held on to my dad and wondered what happened. “Dad, why was there a fire in the oven? Were you trying to cook something?” Dad looked lost, like a small, frightened child. His eyes were glazed and his body was being wracked by coughing fits. The paramedics came over to take a look at him, alleviating a little of my worry. At least his cough was being treated. What was I going to do about his kitchen, though?

The fire was quickly put out; when the screeching of the alarm stopped, one of the firemen came over to talk with me. As he pulled off his helmet, I noticed his familiar face. It was T.J.

Smiling at the soot on his cheek, I said, “Thank you, T.J. Is everything okay in the house now?” I wanted to run my hand over his face and brush the soot off. Just being around him made my knees weak. You would think after sixteen years, I would be over him. Maybe my mind knows, but my body doesn’t yet, I thought sarcastically.
