Mac sat at the beautiful mahogony bar nursing his first beer. I’m more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory. The last place he belonged was somewhere as opulant as this. He ran his fingers up and down the condensation on the beer glass. Even though he grew up in a family with a great deal of money, his parents taught him the benefit of working hard and doing what you love. At eighty, his dad still worked in the stables every morning, grooming his horse or was out in the pasture feeding the cattle.
Claire never understood his family. Money wasn’t important to them unless the cash could be used to befit someone else. Mac shook his head. Sure, he used his family’s money to get inside some of those war-torn countries but only so he could show the world the truth.
He’d worked hard to be impartial but his soft heart swayed him. Seeing any amount of suffering hurt, making him known as a compassionate emmisary in those challenging countries.
With Claire gone, his life had changed once again. He took a job as a reporter at the local station affilliate, reporting on the important events happening in his community so he could be at home with Todd. Realizing how much poverty and conflict existed in his own hometown left him cold. They say charity begins at home. Well, he was determined to find a way to help, while setting a good example for his son.
He took a look at the clock on the wall. Where was she? Maybe she took one look at him and ran for the hills.
Mac turned on his barstool in time to see a gorgeous brunette walk into the bar. Her steps seemed to match the beat of his pulse. Shifting in his chair, he adjusted his now tight, uncomfortable pants. Maybe it’s a good thing he was meeting a woman tonight, if she shows.
He twisted his stool around farther to get a better look at the hottie.
If only she was his date. The woman’s blue dress hugged her curvy body and he couldn’t take his gaze off those legs that seemed to go on forever.
Oh no!
One minute she remained all grace, next her poise went down the drain as her shoe broke. Mac lurched to his feet and ran over to help the stunning woman.
“Are you hurt?” He reached his hand out to help but instead of the tears he expected, Mac heard laughter coming from under the waterfall of hair which hid her face. He ached to touch the burnished bronze length. She reminds me of Dad’s favorite colt, a little skittish but feisty. I like spirited women.
Not wanting to see her sitting there on the floor, Mac scooped her up in his arms.Whoa. She was like a foal, all legs, and she fit perfectly in his arms. He could hold her all day.
“Sir, is the woman okay?” The bartender stood in front of Mac. He couldn’t tell if the guy wanted to grab her out of his arms for himself or to protect his hotel from a lawsuit.
Mac couldn’t help but growl like a dog defending his territory. “I haven’t checked yet. She appears fine. Why don’t you get her a glass of water?” Anything to get rid of him. He wanted to keep her in his arms.
Mac pulled her close to his chest. At the thought of letting her go, his heartbeat sped up. Maybe I can convince her to have a drink with me. He reluctantly set her down in a chair at one of the bar tables.
“Are you okay?” Mac brushed the hair back from her face.
The strands felt like silk between his fingers. Images of brushing this woman’s hair while they lay naked on the bed danced through his mind. Reluctantly, Mac pulled his hand from her and took a deep breath. He didn’t understand what had come over him. He didn’t have this strong of a reaction when he met Claire.
Like uncovering a present on Christmas morning, he could hardly wait to see her face. He watched as the woman lifted her head to meet his gaze. Mesmerized by the light dusting of freckles across the woman’s nose, his breath stopped. Her beautiful green eyes sparkled with merriment. Her tantalizing laughter danced across his skin making his slacks already tight very uncomfortable.

“Good morning, ladies. If you don’t mind me asking, what brings you to my home?”
Meghan was the first to speak, and she was straight to the point. “We are here to ask you to go out on a date with our dad.”
If the looks on their faces hadn’t been so serious, she would have laughed at the nine-year-olds statement. Instead, she shook her head. She couldn’t entertain this horrible matchmaking scheme. “No.”
Melissa spoke next. “Ms. Hennings, our father is a good man.”
Chante held her hands up in a non-threatening manner. “I don’t doubt that at all, but we have to be reasonable here. My dating your father would put all of us in an uncomfortable situation.”
“No more than we already are.” Melanie replied.
She was speechless for just a moment. How in the world did Maxwell survive these three?
“Does your father know that you are here?”
Melissa nodded in the direction of her front door. “He’s outside waiting for us.”
Chante went to the window and pulled the curtains aside. Her eyes met Max’s head on. The man had the nerve to wink at her, and the simple gesture sent her heart rate soaring.
Letting the curtain fall back in place, she shook her head again. She’d been so shocked by the three of them being on her porch that she hadn’t noticed the SUV sitting in the driveway next to hers.
“Excuse me, ladies.”
She crossed to the front door and walked out to the vehicle that Maxwell was sitting comfortably in. His eyes followed her all the way to the SUV. The window was rolled down, and she leaned into the car with more confidence than she really felt.
“Now you didn’t really think that I was going to let you sit out here and relax while your daughters have me in the hot seat did you?”
He grinned, and time stood still. His smile was lethal. “Well, they seemed so determined I didn’t think that it would take long, so I wasn’t sure that I needed to come in.”
She tried to keep a straight face at his lousy excuse as she stepped back and opened the driver’s side door. “Well, let me make it clear.”
He chuckled as he slid out of the vehicle. She tilted her head back to look at him. Lord, he was tall. Unfortunately, the man was gorgeous as well, and that was going to make this situation tough.
“Ladies first.”
She led the way back up to the house. When they returned to the living room, Melissa, Melanie, and Meghan hadn’t moved. Maxwell walked over to the recliner and took a seat while Chante continued standing, facing the girls. “Now you were saying?”
“That you should go out with our dad,” Melissa responded quickly, picking up right where she’d left off.
Chante sighed. If she didn’t know any better she would say that the three sisters had taken lessons from Chantel, Cheree, and herself.
“We trust you.”
Chante looked over at Melanie. These three had put their heads together. Either they loved their dad a lot and wanted to see him happy or they needed someone to distract him so that they could pull more antics like this. Although, it looked like they had too much time on their hands already if they had come up with a plan as insane as the one that they were trying to sell. Based on what she knew about Melissa, she was going to go with the first idea. As flattering as it was that she was the chosen one, it was also an impossible situation.
“So what do you think that people will say about me dating my student’s father?”
Melanie grinned. “From the way that Melissa talks about you, I have a feeling that you don’t care what other people say about you.”
Chante looked over at Maxwell who was sitting with a smug look on his face. If she didn’t know any better, she would say that he was enjoying this, especially since he was not on the receiving end of it for a change.
“Are you going to say anything?” Chante asked, arching a dark brow in his direction.
Max smiled and shook his head. “I already lost this battle earlier. I don’t plan on losing another. Besides, I agree with them and would love to take you out.”
His statement confirmed her earlier thought and floored her at the same time. Chante’s mouth dropped open and almost dragged on the ground. She could see that it was four against one at this point.
“See, there you go. Dad is a good man, and you are a good woman. This is a perfect combination.”

Josh
stared with awe at the tiny little car that pulled up next to his truck. There
was no way that thing had made it to Lobo Basin from anywhere in Texas. It had
to have ridden on a flatbed or something. Seriously, it was like a wind-up toy.
At least it had a Dodge emblem on it. That meant it was solidly built, but sheesh…
The
lady who stepped out of the car shouldn’t even be a blip on his radar. She wore
a pair of leggings under a man’s button-down shirt that had to be at least fifty
sizes too big, horn-rimmed glasses and a pair of ugly flats. The way her hair
was pulled back, it looked as if it was a dull, mousy
brown.
So
why every corpuscle in him stood up and took notice, Josh couldn’t say. Still,
even though he’d just hopped in his truck to drive away, he got out and headed
back into the store.
She
was chewing her bottom lip, looking at the push-button cappuccino machine with a
vaguely concerned look on her face.
Damn.
Josh was pretty sure he couldn’t help with that and he wanted to help her in a
pretty urgent way. Too bad she wasn’t looking at personal massagers. He stuck
his hands in his pockets and wandered over.
“I
bet Dolly could fix you up with a coffee. Or there’s the diner. I could walk you
over.”
“Pardon
me?” Bright green eyes flashed up at him, too pretty to hide behind those
glasses. Oh damn. He could snap her up. Eat her. Like a rabbit. His cock started
to press against his zipper.
“Coffee.
I like coffee. You obviously like coffee. We could go have some.
Together.”
“Thank
you, but I don’t think so.” She turned her back on him, dismissing him, just
like that.
He
almost took a step back, surprise making him a little stupid. He probably wasn’t
all that and a bag of chips but most women at least showed interest in his
lanky, blond good looks. He tipped his cowboy hat back, staring. “Is it just me
or are you always this rude, honey? I mean, it’s
coffee. I didn’t ask if you want to knock boots.”
He
got another one of those looks, wide eyed and bright. “Excuse
me?”
“Well,
you’re new in town and I was just bein’ friendly. No
need to get snotty.”
“Snotty.”
One eyebrow shot up. “Good Lord and butter, I just need a couple of groceries,
not to get harassed and called names. Back off.”
Josh
drew himself up, already mentally cursing his cowboy pride. Still, he opened his
mouth right up and said it anyway. “Too bad, honey. You could use some loosening
up. You’ve got a stick up your ass a mile long.”
“Tell
me you don’t have any children.”
The
words surprised the living fuck out of him. Josh blinked. “Not yet.
Why?”
“Because
I’d hate to believe that I’d have to teach children raised with such atrocious manners.” She turned tail and
headed right up to Minnie at the cash register, the old bitch grinning at him
like the dog she was.
Shit.
Josh didn’t know whether to laugh or spit on the floor. In the end, he decided
to laugh before grabbing a cup and hitting up the coffee machine, getting it to
spit out a fancy cappuccino. He made it to the register before the little gal
was done, sliding it down in front of her.
“Truce?
I’m Josh Bolton. I’m sorry if I was rude.”
“Cheri.
Cheri McBride.” Those eyes met his again and he felt that look deep in his
balls.
“Nice
to meet you.”
He was about to ask her about being the new schoolteacher when Cheri turned to
Minnie.
“Is
there an electrician you can recommend?” Cheri asked.
“They
put you in the old Lupin house, hmm? Paulo, honey. He’s the best. Number’s right there on the
board.” Minnie’s eyes met his, challenging. Everyone knew about him and that
fucking bastard, Paulo, which was embarrassing enough. To have Minnie give the
new lady that asshat’s number, right there in front of
him…
“You
ought to get you someone in from Lordsburg.” When Cheri glanced at him, Josh
shrugged.
“Paulo’s only a handyman.”
Minnie
growled, so low only Josh heard it. “He’s a journeyman electrician and plumber.
He’ll do fine.”
“Excellent.
I just need to know my baby laptop won’t explode. It has a bunch of software for
the children.”
“What
went on the fritz?” Minnie ignored him completely but that was okay with
Josh.
That
way he could move close enough to scent her. Her shampoo had cinnamon in it.
Cinnamon and honey.
“The…”
She shivered, and he swore he could see her nipples draw up. “The plug in the kitchen. I need everything checked
out.”
“Well,
you call Paulo. You gonna buy anything else, Josh, or
are you just going to ogle the poor young lady?”
Josh
snapped out of his daze, his eyes rising from Cheri’s chest. “I’m good. I-If you
don’t mind, Miss Cheri, I might stop by. There’s been
rattlesnakes in that house before.”
“Rattlesnakes?”
Her eyes went wide.
“Nonsense.
Have Paulo spread salt around, that’ll fix them.”
He
was going to have to growl. He did actually growl, subvocalizing enough for Minnie to back off a foot or so.
“I’ll drop by,” he repeated. “Soon. Enjoy your
coffee.”
There
was no way he was letting Paulo have this one.
No
way in hell.

After another week of trying to get high school kids to learn French, Carolyn Baxter’s brain switched gears as soon as she parked her car in the driveway. She had an online date tonight with her Master. Stopping her giddy thoughts, Carolyn had to slow down and match his pace. In the three months they’d been playing via webcam, she’d never seen his face, but she’d fallen hard. Finally, a man who made her work for her reward. She’d revealed her deepest secrets and longed for more.
Carolyn grabbed her bag and purse before locking up the car and opening the side door to her cute little house in the suburbs of Chicago. The access to a proper BDSM club was nearby, but it was the right man that she needed—not the flair. Even if she wasn’t going to be on display for a club, her online Master would be watching her soon. She wanted to touch up her makeup before Master Seth saw her. As she closed the door behind her, a strong arm grabbed her and a hand covered her mouth.
Fear gripped her. It couldn’t be real! She kept every door and window locked. Living alone not far from a big city had taught her not to be foolish and trusting. The strong man spun her, and she was faced with two more men.
No masks but they were dressed in black jeans and shirts. One was blond with blue eyes, and the other dark in both areas. Both had enough muscle to make her think twice about running. They grinned at her, and she shuddered. This wasn’t a robbery. She struggled and tried to scream, but the hand over her mouth made her feel suffocated. The hard form behind her sent confusing messages to Carolyn’s body. She was primed for sex play, but hers was all safe and online.
“Don’t fight. You wanted this.” The dark eyed man in front of her looked her up and down.
She shook her head. She didn’t know them. How could they say that?
The other man chuckled. “Sure you do. Sweetie, nothing on the internet is private. You looked hot doing that dirty stuff for your online Master, but we enjoyed it, too.”
Her face burned and tears welled up. Master Seth promised it was a secure line. She’d gone through a service that did background checks and gave a safe forum to match people. Did Seth let others watch? Had she been hacked?
“Don’t worry. We’re going to give you exactly what you wanted. We like to combine fantasies. Intruders are hot. Three guys—hey we’re happy to share, right Jones?” The blond one nodded.
“That’s right, Smith.” Jones walked up to Carolyn and unbuttoned her blouse.
She struggled, not knowing what else to do. Everything they said was true. In high school and college she’d had the intruder fantasy. It was her most embarrassing one—to be forced and taken by strangers. It was what had led her to find her submissive side. Wanting more than one man was her current fantasy.
She’d hoped Master Seth would fulfill her fantasies, not random strangers who hacked her. As Jones tugged open her blouse, Carolyn saw Smith undressing. The gorgeous muscle and growing cock made her relax for a second. It was her fantasy, and her body still craved it. So far, they hadn’t hurt her.
Jones looked her in the eye. “Very nice rack. We’ll leave the bra on for now. First you, need to get this. If we let you go, you don’t scream, you don’t run. You do exactly what we want, or we’ll tie you up, punish you and use you until we’re bored. And our boss doesn’t get bored easily. Then we’ll leave you tied up and call the cops, your neighbors and the principal of the school you teach at.”
Fear and rage gripped her tighter than the mystery man behind her. Was he the boss? His cock was hard, but he showed no fatigue at holding her. If the school and parents found out what she did on the weekends, they’d never let her teach. She’d be fired and have to move.
“Understand?” Jones asked as he pulled off his shirt.
She nodded. They were going to take what they wanted anyway. Maybe if she cooperated, they’d be less inclined to hurt her. Carolyn loved being submissive and her sexual fantasies fueled her desire to fully engage in the lifestyle, but she never wanted the extreme pain some subs did.
The hand lifted off her mouth, and she took a breath of cool air. The throbbing in her cunt embarrassed her, and when the arm around her body released, Carolyn felt off balance.
“Drop the blouse on the ground and lose the skirt.” Jones unbuckled his belt and opened his fly.
Carolyn let the blouse fall and slowly unzipped her skirt. The men were being careful. Only one undressed at a time so two were always watching her. She couldn’t out run or fight two of them—certainly not all three. Men liked her petite figure, but now, she wished she’d taken that self-defense class.
“Faster!” The third man smacked her rear.
She turned and looked at him. Tall and muscled, he had on all his clothing and stared at her commandingly. That voice made her tremble. She stared into his blue eyes and felt bold. Brown curly hair and deep brown eyes gave him a boyish look, but that handsome face was no-nonsense.
Then something shiny caught her eye. His belt buckle was an exaggerated ‘S’ that could be mistaken for a snake at quick glance. That symbol was Master Seth’s profile picture. It was the only visual clue she had about him. Her pussy tightened as she inched the skirt down. It’d been a rough day with no panties, but she’d done exactly what her Master wanted.
Carolyn couldn’t stop smiling. It had to be him.

Marek was familiar with strategizing warfare and solving problems, but he had never known a precedent for what just happened. Augusta seemed to believe the woman’s story, but he wasn’t so sure it was true.
Travel through time was impossible. So he told himself. But how did that explain this woman and her insistence on what had been outside the front door? How did that explain her clothing that was like nothing he’d ever seen before? No stranger to a woman’s body, he did like the way it molded to her curves, the soft white, clingy covering over her breasts accentuating her attributes in a way that was almost more desirable than if she’d been naked.
Mmm…almost. He rolled his eyes. Well, obviously, naked would be better.
Strange blue cloth tightly sheathed her long legs all the way down to her ankles. The big white, puffy things on her feet looked clumsy and ungainly, but she was able to move around silently.
He decided to watch her carefully, which was certainly no hardship. Her face was fine-boned -- soft, pink, round apple cheeks, and a determined, pointed chin. Her eyes, the bluest eyes he’d ever seen, were at times pale with uncertainty, then bright with fascination at her surroundings. Spellbound, he watched. Something caused her breasts to be thrust out under her coverings, and a man would have to be blind to miss the hard nipples so visible. His fingers flexed, craving to touch them. He could almost feel their velvety softness on his lips.
Augusta had taken control of Janney Forrester, had invited her into the peristyle. Before showing her around, she took Janney to a bedroom and urged her to change into a tunic and stola. No one else in the villa had seen her yet, and until they figured out what was going on, it would be better if the servants didn’t suspect anything odd. He’d sent for Gaius, his friend and mentor, Augusta’s husband. Gaius would help sort this mess out.
As the woman wandered around the peristyle after Augusta left to see to the evening meal, he stood guard. Legs solidly planted, arms crossed over his chest, he scowled. She was not going to leave his sight. If he had to perform his self-imposed guard duty, a beautiful woman was a pleasant change from scruffy enemy Celts.
Occasionally, she would glance over her shoulder to see where he stood and throw him a wary look. Then, at times, she seemed to forget his presence and peered at carvings, benches, and the fountain with a near reverence, even tracing patterns of curves and hollows with her fingertips.
Hmm.
His face flamed, his jaw dropping open in surprise. He’d bedded a lot of women during his long years in the army, and he’d never been embarrassed before. But the sensuous drag of her fingers along the ridges of carved flowers felt like she had placed her hand on his hip and traced across his tightly clenching stomach muscles.
Vae!
He froze and gaped idiotically when she encountered the cool, smooth marble statue of a nude Hermes, one hand on its hip, a knee cocked forward. Her gaze rose to the top. When her gaze lowered to Hermes’ middle, she squinted, bit her lower lip, and stared at the God’s larger-than-life phallus. He squirmed awkwardly, shifting his feet on the gravel pathway.
At the sound, she turned, looked directly at him, and flushed brightly. Their eyes locked. Gods, what was happening to him? He couldn’t breathe with wanting to grab this woman and prove to her that he was every bit as impressive as the statue.
She bit her lower lip.
Marek suddenly realized he wanted to bite her lower lip. To suck on it.
“Umm,” she murmured, lost in his eyes.
And her upper lip…
Like a bolt of lightning, carnal heat ripped through his belly, and he gasped as if in pain. He turned on his heel and stomped off. Slamming the door to his bedroom, he stood in the center of the room, aghast.
Good Gods! I’m insane.
Marek Benin Verus had never run from a woman in his life. And he hadn’t this time, either. But what had he done? Shaking. He was shaking.
Stop! He ordered himself to think. Cut off the emotions and think. Yes, he wanted the woman. Naturally he did. What sane man wouldn’t want her? That innocent face surrounded by all that curly, yellow hair, and the body of a goddess. He hated that he was completely unnerved by her. This was a first for him. Women were a means to assuaging physical desires, but this one…
He knew her. Oh, not her name, nor specifically her face. She’d been in his dreams, though. Since his breakdown, he’d awakened many mornings hot and agitated, wondering what was wrong with him. It wasn’t unusual to awaken aroused, but remnants of the fantasy of a bright presence touching his body, the voice a mere gentle hum filtering through his brain, stayed with him even after he woke. The shock of the dream becoming reality staggered him. Why had this woman invaded his dreams? What plan did the Gods have? Because without a doubt, she’d been brought to him by the Gods. The question was why?
Humph. Do the reasons matter? The woman has been sent to me. I will have her. The omen is too strong to dismiss.
The yellow-haired woman was a gift to him from the Gods.

Excerpt:
Thanks to hours of last minute shopping with bride-to-be and best friend Noor, my bunions decided to exact revenge as I limped out of the elevator on the third floor. I couldn’t reach my condo fast enough to tear off my shoes and soak my feet in a warm bath.
I stuck my key in the lock and opened the door.
A hand shoved me from behind. My bags dropped to the floor, tripping me as I fell forward into my condo. My front smacked the floor of the entryway next to my kitchen. My keys landed somewhere in the dark while my purse and mace went in the opposite direction. Damn.
Before I could stand and gather bearings, my assailant nearly yanked off my arm from the socket to help me to my feet. I expected him to throw me against the counter and kicked my legs wide enough for backdoor entry. He didn’t. Instead, he dragged me down the short hall into my living room and flung me toward the recliner.
Scrambling out of the chair, I screamed. He was there, slapping his hand across my mouth. He shoved both of us backward until we collapsed into the cushions, his heavy, muscled body on top of mine.
This is it. I’m going to get raped in my own condo. Ohmygod. What do I do? What do I do?
My muffled shrieks continued until my throat turned raw and my lungs burned. Between breaths, I tried to bite his palm, but my teeth didn’t have the reach. No way was I going down like this. I’d bring it on in such a way that would make the coroner think we had revisited the games of Ancient Rome.
Keeping one hand on me and his body pressed hard into mine so I couldn’t move, he reached for the nearby light and pulled the metal cord.
The beam against his face cut off my wailing. It was the guy from the department store. Though I had only noticed him twice, I couldn’t help staring at his scars. Different shades of Caucasian skin patches had been sewn onto his face with Frankenstein-like stitching. His plastic surgeon probably had to do a stitch-by-numbers to close those massive wounds. Despite the pieced together job, his eyes were the same color. Dark and filled with enough hatred to make a wild bull stand down.
He reached inside his jacket. I tried to bury myself in the cushions, since I had nowhere else to go. Holy shit! He was going to shoot me. I’d die before I ever made it to my long-lost family’s reunion. This wasn’t fair dammit! I had just found my older brother and younger sister after being separated from them for the last twenty-five years. So. Not. Fair. God, please. Please, say it’s not true.
The stranger slowed his movements before continuing. Just when I expected a gun or a knife, he produced a cell phone. He fingered across the touchpad screen before shoving it in my face.
“Your name wouldn’t be Whitney by any chance, would it?” He pushed the picture closer. “Look like anyone you know?”
I peeled my terrified stare away long enough to do what he said.
Ohymygod. Now, my struggles really stopped. In fact, I couldn’t take my eyes off the picture.
Except for my black, shoulder-length curly hair, she looked exactly like me. A perfect carbon copy. The scenery behind her wasn’t familiar, though it could’ve been anywhere. Still, I would’ve remembered posing for something like this, since it was taken in a desert region with her standing next to a sign that read Whiskey Pete.
I glared at my assailant. “My name is MacKenzie Lawson. I don’t know anyone named Whitney or otherwise.”
He studied my eyes for a few seconds more before snatching back the picture, grumbling, “She was a friend.” Again, his fingers slid across the smooth surface before he pushed the phone in my face again. This time, he played a video for me. “That woman standing on the subway platform. Watch what happens.”
I didn’t expect much and didn’t want to see, but I couldn’t help it. Passengers packed in together on the shoulder, waiting for the next train to arrive. Just as it had pulled into the station, a woman tumbled off the platform and slammed into the front of the train. People screamed in shock. Though there wasn’t any sound, I didn’t need it. The horror on their faces said it all. The weird part was that another woman assumed her place on the platform who looked almost exactly like her, only she wore a hat over her head to hide her eyes and parts of her face. They were the same height and weight, only wearing different clothes. She stood emotionless there while everyone crowded around and pointed, probably screaming. She had to have pushed her look-alike.
“Let me rewind and show you a close up.” The stranger slid his fingers on the cell phone to reset the video.
“No, I don’t need to see that again.”
He yanked me forward, though not quite out of the chair and shoved the phone in my face. “Look at it!”
I didn’t want to, but I did.
And wished I hadn’t. The woman who was pushed into the oncoming subway looked a lot like me and his precious Whitney.
I pushed the video away. “What the hell are you showing me this for?”
“Would you like to see another?”
“I don’t need—” I paused soaking in what he just said. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about a dozen more at last count.”
“Somebody must have busted your crack pipe across the back of your head.”
His eyes narrowed like he wanted to choke me until my eyeballs popped out of my skull. “You don’t believe me, do you?”
I started to rise when he held a single finger out, motioning me to stay put. I thought about slapping it out of my way, but since he had strength while all I had were nails and a blood-curdling scream, I decided to park my behind in the chair again. “What do you want? Money? Because I’m a school teacher, which means you’re lucky I’m not robbing you instead.”
“I want to know about your childhood.”
“And I want to know why they let mental patients roam free!”
I had nothing to lose. My adoptive parents took pleasure in tormenting and treating me like a piece of shit. So when I had finally gotten out on my own, I vowed never to take shit from anyone again who didn’t respect me and mine. This guy had gone there.
His scowl loosened up, but not enough to say that I was out of danger. “Your upbringing. Your parents. Your real ones.”
“What fucking business is it—?”
The home-invader jammed a gun into my cheek. A frown bent his lips while seriousness marred his hardened face. He meant to pull that trigger if I didn’t give him what he wanted.
“W-w-wait!” A gulp slipped down my tightened throat. My heart pounded so hard against my ribcage that I thought it might go into arrest from sheer exhaustion. It was no wonder I had borderline hypertension.
“If that smart mouth doesn’t tell me what I want to know, then it won’t be talking to the police either.” He cocked the trigger.
Oh shit. My hands began to shake and I squinted, pulling my head into my shoulders with only a hope and a prayer that this maniac wouldn’t splatter my brain across the carpet. “My parents gave me, my brother, and my sister up for adoption. I had just turned seven at the time. They were good parents until that point. Just dropped us off at some gothic looking orphanage in the middle of the woods. They’re dead, okay? Died soon after that. The only family I have left is the family I haven’t seen in more than twenty years and who I plan to finally meet in a few weeks.”
I stopped. My horrible childhood was my own. Hell, I didn’t even talk about it with my best friends. They didn’t need to know my adoptive caretakers took pleasure in smacking me with dog leashes and shoving me into walls whenever I tried to prove to them that we could be a loving family if we tried. There wasn’t any love in that house. Only terror.

I was still here. Either he didn’t have any bullets or
I let go of the tension creeping up the back of my neck and shoulders and slowly opened my eyes. The man slid the gun in a used leather holster underneath his jacket.
“Someone who looked a lot like you killed my partner Whitney while she was jogging in the park. I wasn’t sure if it was you or another woman who looks like you.”
“Another of the so-called twelve?”
He blinked, wonder marring his face as though he wanted to ask a question, but reneged. “You’re not like the others. Your hazel eye is on the right. Theirs is on the left, just like Whitney’s. A mirror image, so to speak. Are you right-handed or left?”
“Left.”
“They’re right. Like I said, a perfect mirror image, but opposites. Only, you must be the original.”
A plan came to mind. If he was so indulged in this psychotic crap he was shoveling, then perhaps I could use it to get away from him.

A plan came to mind. If he was so indulged in this psychotic crap he was shoveling, then perhaps I could use it to get away from him.

WOLFE'S LADY by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy
WOLFE'S LADY by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy
Stella Raines was looking for a change. She moved to the small town of Riverville to begin her first year of teaching history. She quickly learns that teaching in such a rural high school is no picnic, but the math teacher in the class down the hall makes her first week all the more intriguing….
Darien Wolfe is a staple of Riverville High School, with his rule-breaking hair and attire. He seems to have taught there since, well, forever. However, Darien never knew how much his long life might change until he notices the new history teacher down the hall.
Their attraction is instant and for eternity, like the stars under the full moon. But can Stella survive Darien’s secret?

Excerpt:
For the first time, Stella realized that the house sat in the midst of thick woods, aged trees with broad trunks that isolated it from the road. Not one neighboring house was visible through the thickets and in addition, the lawn ran wild with forsythia bushes, rose of Sharon trees, evergreens, and even dogwoods. Flowers bloomed everywhere, some in neat, tended beds but others rampant across the lawn. Most were old-fashioned flowers, storybook blossoms like hollyhocks, roses, lilies, and more. The sheer wild beauty of the scene caught her breath for a few moments, and then she turned to Darien with honest enthusiasm.
“This is absolutely lovely, Darien. It is like something out of a storybook or fairy tale. It reminds me of Sleeping Beauty’s castle when the prince found it, a jewel tucked away in a verdant wood.”
Darien offered her his hand, chuckling with pleasure as they mounted the broad stone steps to the wide covered porch that ran the front of the house. There, too, clematis and moonflower vines climbed trellises, adding to the air of privacy.
“You approve; that’s very good,” he said. “Let’s see what you think of the interior.”
He threw open the heavy carved door and let her walk ahead into a huge room with many windows. To her right, a carved staircase ascended, as graceful as an Edwardian lady waltzing would. A chandelier with multiple prisms sparkled from the very center of the ceiling. Each doorway that led from the room – into a dining room, a hallway, and the library – each had dark walnut trim. Even the furnishings, crushed velvet crimson sofas and chairs, added to the air of mystique and yesteryear.
“Darien, this is amazing. This room is stunning.”
“No. You, my dear, are stunning,” he said. He stood beside her and then turned her to face him. Stella’s heart pounded faster as he bent and kissed her, unhurried, his lips burning against hers, warm and soft as melted candle wax. Her body kindled at his caress and she leaned against him, letting the fever that spread over her body consume her. Stella felt his powerful body surge against hers, masculine and vital. His passion, his desire was a living thing between them. When he released her, she almost fell, her legs weak but he caught her.
“Stella, dear heart, you are a delight. Come have a drink with me in the library before I lose my head. Will champagne do?”
Her mouth refused to work so she nodded, trailing in his wake into the library, tucked behind the foot of the stairs. This too was a marvelous room, cozy with a granite fireplace, each block carved with intricate designs, and the walls lined with books. Most appeared to be antique volumes but among them Stella recognized a few more modern works. A small bar stood opposite the hearth and after he pointed her to the black leather loveseat, he brought out two fragile flutes and filled them with Dom Perignon. Darien handed her a flute and raised his glass to touch hers with a soft, ringing sound.
“To what the future and the stars may hold,” he intoned in a voice as serious as a prayer, soft as a blessing.
“To the future,” Stella repeated and sipped.
The sweet, crisp wine was a good vintage and her surprise was evident as the smooth taste burst into her mouth.
“This is 1975 v Dom Perignon,” Darien said. “It is one of the best modern vintages available. Will it do??”
“It’s awesome,” Stella said, draining her glass. The wine must have gone to her head, she thought, for without hesitation, she mimicked a child’s British accent and quoted Oliver Twist, “Please, sir, may I have some more?”
Darien’s face shifted, his lips twitched and his eyes rolled until he burst out laughing. He sat down on the loveseat, wiped tears of mirth from his eyes, and drank his champagne.
“You are the most remarkable woman I have met in years.” Darien said, shaking his head. “Stella, I find myself quite smitten with you. Dare I hope that it might be reciprocated?”
She made a quick translation of his old school language and replied in her own vernacular,
“I think you’re totally hot, Darien, so yes.”
