CAIRO NIGHTS by Sandra Sookoo

CAIRO NIGHTS by Sandra Sookoo

Losing something you want the most makes you stronger - or an easy target.

Joy Debinham, daughter of an English missionary, hides a secret heartache while working with Egypt's poverty stricken. As she attempts to save the children from easily curable diseases, she has another interest - keeping Egypt's treasures in the country. But the arrival of Quinn ignites her banked passion and becomes the obsession that might put her life in danger.

Quinn Handry, an enterprising American from humble roots, has come to Egypt for one reason - the money. He's done many things for a buck, but brokering stolen antiquities is the most lucrative. In order to reclaim what he lost years ago, he's always on the hunt for treasures until the day he meets Joy and everything dims compared to the desire she invokes in him.

During perfumed Egyptian nights, the heat between them flares while acquaintances conspire to destroy them. Danger doesn't stay confined to tombs and pushes them to finally realize what matters most - if they can live long enough to claim it.

Chapter One
Mena House, Giza, Egypt, Early January 1888

A fine pink haze settled over the Giza plateau, softening the late afternoon sun’s glare. The majestic pyramids sat stately and eternal in the near distance, symbols of power, authority and mystery for centuries, their dun colored bricks a stark contrast to the robin’s egg blue of the sky. The black shapes of tourists milled about the pyramids’ base. She could only hope this batch would be respectful and leave the natural wonder as they found it. Below, the jovial chatter of the Mena House gardeners reached her ears and brought a smile to her lips. Egypt, in all its many facets, never ceased to be a source of amazement.

Perfection. Glorious. Humbling.

Joy Debinham leaned out farther over the railing. Her gaze fell on a tall man, his long legs encased in khaki trousers. The sleeves of his white work shirt were rolled to his elbows revealing deeply tanned skin, while brown leather braces crisscrossed his back. As he gestured to his male companion, the fabric pulled taut across a pair of broad shoulders. From her perch on the second floor, she admired his thick black hair, parted on one side, and the wink of the sun on his spectacles. She'd not seen him around the hotel grounds before, but he had potential to be devastating to any female he came into contact with. She couldn't stop a sigh of appreciation from escaping.

“Oh my.”

As if he heard the soft exhalation of breath, he turned and glanced up, directly at her. Their gazes locked. A flash of intimate connection buzzed between them. Urgent heat seeped into her body, tingling between her thighs, hardening her nipples and awakening sensations she thought long dead.

Before she could respond, do much more than gape, he bowed slightly with a tiny mocking grin curving his sensuous lips, and then he walked down one of the garden paths and out of her sight.

What must it be like to kiss those lips or be held by those strong arms? Chastising herself for such foolish thoughts, she perched on her chair, picking up her teacup with a shaking hand. It had been so long since she'd felt needed by a man, yet getting caught up in such a sticky web meant nothing except heartache.

But, oh, how wonderful it had been!

Once again gazing upon the Great Pyramid, she sighed. What must it have been like to be alive when Egypt thrived under a pharaoh’s rule, to watch the nobility parade through the streets in their fine gold and lapis jewelry and see the fantastic headdresses and staffs? As she heaved a sigh, Joy propped an elbow on the railing and plopped her head in her hand. At times, the romance of Egypt sank into her soul and mocked her lonely state.

Why shouldn’t she have the opportunity of marriage or, at the very least, a man with whom to pass the cool nights? She snorted at the incongruity of the thought. Because every man she’d met since living in Egypt did nothing to make her heart race—except for the nameless gentleman she'd spied moments earlier. Just the thought of him caused her core to throb in acute desire. She wanted a man who would fix his attention upon her and never let it waver. She’d already seen what wandering interests did to her parents’ marriage and wanted none of the same.

It didn't matter what she wished for in the romantic realm. She lived for her work. Anything else could not be contemplated. She wanted to be that undeniably important reason for living and have the luxury of being the same. For now, her charity work would have to suffice.

While she stared, a great cloud of dust rose up from the pyramid’s base. It filtered through the air, obscuring the clear vision she previously enjoyed. Joy straightened to her full height and frowned. “Good gad. The camel racers have returned.” Though the races had been around for decades, she considered them too commercial to be played out in front of the majesty of Egypt's iconic monuments. Tourists flocked to gamble on the racers, which in turn besmirched the plateau with litter and trash. The annoyance boiled in her blood. Today would be the day camel racing stopped on the plateau—or at least it would halt for a few hours to alleviate her current ire.

Patience never being one of the virtues she practiced, Joy left her cream-and-gold accented room, slamming the door behind her. She raced along the hallway, the Oriental runner muffling her footsteps. As she tore down the polished wooden main staircase, she ignored the surprised glances cast her way from patrons in the grand lobby. Her gaze briefly connected with that of a red-haired female whose curious expression triggered an avalanche of chills down her spine.

She shook her head and put the troublesome Viola Rathesborne from her mind. I have no time for drama. The sharp report from her heels cut through the soft buzz of conversation around tea trays. She gained the wide verandah and threaded her way through the outdoor tables, again ignoring the questioning glances. Her focus remained on that cloud of dust.

As soon as she reached the manicured lawn, she hitched up her cumbersome skirts and ran up the hill that sat in front of the Mena House hotel. It was the quickest route to the pyramid complex, but the most ungainly. She had no time to spare going around the grounds and following the path especially made for such a trip.

Once on the plateau, her boots sank into the sand and made running difficult yet not impossible. Another race appeared ready to begin with five camels lined up on one end. The riders wore Arabic dress, their heads wrapped in turbans and veiled to protect their faces from sand and sun. Colorful blankets covered the camels' backs to guard against saddle sores. Clusters of tourists and racing enthusiasts bordered the strip of land designated as the course, and a man, presumably the official of the monstrosity, stood at the other end, waiting. The setting sun glanced off the metal parts of the harnesses and reins, adding gaiety to the gathering.

“Over my dead body!”

The rage that had steadily built during the hike hit a boiling point while she marched across the sand. Joy reached the race course just as the official waved a white flag. Camels thundered in her direction. Heart pounding and sweat drenching her back, she ran in what she hoped was a route conducive to safety. As it was, she had a hard time discerning this due to the dust and ever-present grit in the air.

Hooves thumped the ground as the riders hurtled through the sand, adding to the cloud of dust. One in particular galloped into her path and Joy froze, trying to anticipate where he'd move. A flash of the sun winked off his face. Did he wear … spectacles? The odd thought occupied her brain. Then he was upon her. A cry of terror tore from her throat. Her heart hammered. Her mouth went dry, but he didn’t stop. Instead, the rider bent, caught her around the waist with one arm and hauled her across his saddle as if she were little more than a rug.

"Unhand me this instant!" She struggled but the pommel cut into her side and his free hand pressed her firmly down. Her legs swung against the animal while her cheek rested against the man's muscular thigh. Her body jostled; the metal bits of the harness jingled when he urged the camel into a trot. She had no recourse except to shut her eyes against the flying sand and grit. Tingles crept along her skin from the firm weight of his hand on her back.

Long minutes later, the camel slowed and she cracked open her eyes. They'd traveled a fair distance. Joy glanced at the sky and groaned. He'd carried her to the opposite side of the pyramids, away from the bustle of tourists and the constant cry of Egyptian children clamoring for baksheesh, or charity money, too far removed from the camel race that the men could be of assistance in a pinch. From this location, she recognized their colorful saddle blankets but doubted they'd be able to hear.

She'd be alone with this man with no one available to help or even hear her if she screamed. The thought sent cold chills over her skin that quickly vanished in the face of prickles of anticipation. What would he do?

Though the rider had reined in his animal, it came to a lurching halt, protesting human handling with a hideous bellow. Before she had time to clutch at the man's robes, they both went flying over the camel’s head and tumbled to the sand in a cloud of dust.

The warmth from the sun-baked sand seeped through the back of her clothes as she struggled with the tangle of skirts and the unexpected weight of the man on top of her. His turban had knocked askew and the part he’d wrapped around his face hung loose. She blinked in confusion, staring at a strong jaw shadowed with stubble, a slightly crooked nose that had undoubtedly been broken at one time and eyes so rich and brown they resembled the finest Arabian coffee. He indeed wore spectacles. They sat at a rakish angle on the bridge on that aristocratic nose.

A gasp of recognition escaped as she muddled through the turban and robe. “You!” He was the man from the garden! Maybe it was the heat; maybe it was the residual effects of her anger from the races; maybe it was the familiar feel of having the hardness of a very male body pressed against her or perhaps it was a combination, but in the seconds she felt his breath on her cheek, thrilled over the dimpled indention in his chin and spied the sensual line of his lips, she made a quick decision. For one last time, she’d take what she wanted and damn the consequences. She might not have another chance for such a scandalous rendezvous, especially knowing her companion, Jillian, could come looking for her at any time. The threat of discovery added a thread of excitement to the predicament.

His gaze met hers, angry, smoldering with the hint of a challenge. “We meet again.” With the barest of mocking smiles, he moved a hand to cup a breast, boldly brushing his fingers over its curve. Rivulets of liquid heat flowed through her body, pebbling her nipples, tingling between her thighs. His thumb found a hardened bud, tormented it through her clothing. His mocking smile grew.

“Bastard.” In that second, she accepted his unspoken challenge. She gripped his shoulders and tugged him down until her lips touched his. Strong and firm, at first he did nothing except pull slightly away to linger, his breath a steamy dream against her skin, then he grunted and took control, kissing her with enthusiasm.

The hand not kneading her breast snaked beneath her head in the sand to cup her skull, holding her tighter to him. His mouth moved over hers with experience and confidence, teasing her lower lip, nibbling at the corners until she opened for him. When the silky heat of his tongue touched hers, she gasped, but that only allowed him to deepen the kiss, probe her mouth with intimate knowledge that awakened shivery sensation inside her soul. Warmth tumbled through her body, a languid river of sensation she’d not known since…

No. This couldn’t be allowed to happen again. The last time had been too devastating.

Planting her palms against his hard chest, she pushed him away and scrambled out from under him as best she could with the cumbersome skirts. “I trust the spill you took will make you rethink another camel race. Doing so mocks the integrity and sanctity of this site. Do you understand?” Her chest heaved as she stood. Sand trickled beneath her collar and worked into her boots, but the irritation couldn't block the blatant need that gripped her. That one touch had the power to undo her.

“Ah, I see. You attempt to take advantage then mount that high and mighty horse and rain a lecture down upon my head.” His deep baritone highlighted an American accent. He got to his feet and proceeded to brush the sand and dust from his robe. “I could have won that damn race. There's not a better camel in all of Egypt.” Western-style trousers peeked from beneath the robe’s hem along with boots instead of sandals.

Joy shrugged. Undeniably handsome, his intense gaze played havoc with her insides. Dangerous. Powerful. Intoxicating. She swallowed, but her throat remained dry. "We don't always get what we want." She backed away from him as quick as the sand would allow. “Better luck next time.” She glanced around the immediate area. The race had ended and the crowds, having had their curiosity satisfied, thinned and dispersed to other parts of the attraction. The camel racers stood clustered together talking and laughing, apparently unconcerned one of their numbers was elsewhere. “I apologize for thwarting your plans, but something had to be done.” She refused to spend another second thinking about how nice his lips had felt on hers or how comforting his body had been—or how much it would take to coax his hand onto her breast once more.

The man readjusted his spectacles. His eyes narrowed behind the lenses. “You cost me a great deal of money today, woman. I won’t forget that—or your kiss.” Without another word, he turned and stalked away. A shrill whistle brought his camel trotting to his side. As if there were springs in his feet, he vaulted into the saddle and disappeared in a cloud of dust.

Joy shivered even though the afternoon air was on the backside of stifling. He’d left a spark deep in her core that set flame to the dry kindling she’d become inside over the years. She’d almost destroyed her life then. She refused to repeat that mistake. The cost was too high.

* * * *

Several hours later, as guests staying at Mena House gathered for dinner on the Giza plateau, Joy walked along the Causeway that led to the Great Pyramid. She'd managed to elude her companion on the pretense of taking a quick walk with the promise to return in time for the entrees. Cool air tickled her cheeks, a stark change from the heat of the day. Egypt after sunset was a different beast entirely. Stars twinkled overhead while the darkness had a tendency to be all-consuming if one wasn't used to its solitude.

Disinclined to keep the promise to her companion and partake of dinner or invent small talk with people she detested, she headed toward the monuments. Her lightweight wool shirtwaist dress kept the bulk of the chill from her skin, much different than standard evening wear would, but satins and silks were no match for rough stones and bat guano-covered passageways. Not to mention donning evening gowns constituted the addition of a corset. That she wanted to avoid at all costs.

Taking in the artwork from an ancient civilization, admiring something greater than herself, reminding her why she remained in Egypt, would set her mind to rights and help to forget what had been a trying day.

At the last second, she veered off the main road and threaded her way through a field of rock cut tombs and mastabas—underground crypts—in the general direction of the smaller of the three pyramids, Menkaure's. Not in the mood for the pageantry of Khafre's tomb, she figured the lesser known pyramid would suit her confused thoughts just fine. During moments when she needed a place for reflection and solitude, she often spent time in that pyramid, alone with her musings. Weak illumination from her lantern cast eerie shadows off the raised chunks of rock that delineated tombs from the ever-present sand.

The monument was never finished as its occupant had died too early. The haphazard construction and lack of limestone casing blocks on the outside meant heightened crumbling from age, but to Joy, the weathering gave it character and personality. It had seen hardships and stood the test of time. So she hoped she had done as well.

Nearly at the smaller Causeway and well out of range of the fires and lights of the dinner party, she collided with man scurrying at a fast rate through the cemetery. Without a light of his own, she hadn't seen him until it was too late. His arms went around her waist to keep her from falling then he gripped her hips and held her away as she raised her lantern. "Max? What are you doing here? I was unaware you'd arrived in Cairo."

"Ah, the lovely Joy Debinham. Imagine running into you, quite literally, here in the shadows, and all alone."

Max Smithfield had been a thorn in her side since she'd met him three years ago. A wastrel and a rogue with more money than common sense, he wintered in Egypt—not to take in the sights—but to game at all the best tables in the bigger cities and steal as many female hearts as he could before returning home to England. He'd tried to court her once. She'd put a stop to it in no uncertain terms and made a point of snubbing him in polite circles ever since.

She continued to stare, searching her mind for something to say. “Egypt is, after all, a land full of surprises.”

The dislike that had sprung up from her public coldness had been returned in kind and he never missed an opportunity to utter set downs during dinners or parties. The fact he was equally skilled in stealing pieces of Egyptian history was another reason for her avoidance. She'd reported him to the Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian authorities for illegally smuggling small artifacts out of the country, which had much to do with his current animosity. However, the Egyptian police had done little about it, but it had been the English military who'd finally given him a strict warning.

Chances are Max hadn't forgotten.

“So it is, but then, you always seem to be in the exact place where you have no business being.”

She’d not forgotten either but at least he would think twice about trafficking antiquities. "Coincidence, nothing more."

"Hmm." His blue eyes glittered and his breath reeked of gin. "Could it be you have changed your mind and decided to seek me out after all this time?" He ran his palms along her sides to as if to emphasize his intent.

She fought off a shiver and stepped clear of his hold. "Hardly, as the Egyptian Gazette hasn't reported that Hell froze over." She peered more closely into his face. A trace of fear had entered his expression before he hid it away behind his mask of customary boredom. "Why are you out here? Menkaure's pyramid isn’t one most people visit."

"I wasn’t interested in the pyramid. I wanted a look at the temple ruins. I'm tossing around the idea of financing an Egyptologist and his dig team." As he stared past her, he visibly relaxed and ran the elegant fingers of one hand through his sandy blond hair. "I have been visiting sites to determine if I have enough interest."

"Is that right?" She narrowed her eyes. Why was he so relieved? Fleeing from someone? "Financing does not imply being present on a dig. Besides, the Museum has already assigned sites for the season. You would need to wait for next winter."

Max straightened the lapels of his ivory linen suit. "You don’t know everything that happens behind the scenes in Egypt, Joy. It would be in your best interests not to inquire into my activities too closely."

Her stomach clenched from the implication. "Is that a threat, Mr. Smithfield?" How dare the man!

"Interpret it how you like, but I’d advise you to never find yourself alone in any part of this country again. Others are not as respectful of females as I am. And may I remind you, I’m a great … friend to the Cairo police." He touched the brim of his straw hat. "Good evening, Miss Debinham." After shoving his hands into his trouser pockets, he strolled through the cemetery toward the dinner party, whistling as he went.

Respectful my eye. It seemed the evening would match the day in unsavory dealings. Pushing the incident from her mind, she hurried through the remainder of the tombs. When she reached the lesser Causeway, she breathed a small sigh of relief. Two men passed her on the path; she recognized them as guards in the British military who regularly patrolled the Cairo streets. Had Max been running from them? His return to Egypt unsettled her more than it should and not because of his veiled threat. Men like Max didn’t care who they hurt in order to further their own gain.

She reached the funerary temple that marked the entrance to Menkaure's pyramid. Ravaged by nature, the reliefs here had succumbed to the elements or enterprising tourists who had the habit of carrying away pieces of artwork as free souvenirs. Joy sneered at the thought and anger rose in her chest. Egypt's treasures were being raped more frequently as time went on while men like Max sought to finance the effort.

How to stem the tide, or was it already too late?

She went through the stone doorway and walked along the entrance passageway. The feeble light from her lantern kept her company in the complete darkness. Her steps echoed as she descended the slight downward slope. Soon, she passed through a paneled chamber lined with false doors. Flaking gold winked in her lantern light. Beyond the chamber was another passage. This section never failed to cause shivers to break out over her skin as she gazed upward into the gloom. Dark empty spaces indicated the spots where heavy portcullis blocks used to be as a deterrent to ancient tomb robbers.

She imagined the first bands of thieves who had been undoubtedly crushed when the blocks released to seal the far passage. The black market was a demanding mistress though, and smarter thieves had come later burrowing around the blocks which were later removed, most likely for building material.

The passage sloped upward. Joy took her voluminous skirts in hand to follow its ascent to the antechamber beyond. The air within was close and stale, but she'd visited many tombs before and had grown somewhat accustomed to it. She'd barely traversed the smallish room when a slight noise behind her sent her heart rate escalating.

Turning, Joy lifted her lantern high. Nothing moved beyond the golden arc. She froze, listening. There it came again, a faint disturbance of pebbles as if moved by invisible feet. Gooseflesh broke out over her arms. Ridiculous tales of a mummy curse sprang into her brain. Common sense told her there was no such thing, yet her imagination ran away and considered it a viable possibility.

Her hand trembled. Shadows danced and jumped about the chamber. She attempted to control her erratic breathing. An impossible task. Her stomach clenched as she stared at the darkened doorway. Fleeing was out of the question. There was only one way in or out. The specter—or whatever it was—could just as easily follow her deeper into the depths.

I'll stand and fight. There is no other option.

The muscles in her arm ached as she waited for her doom. The scratching sound came again, echoed and magnified in the small space, and she flinched. It floated closer and she swore she heard the inhalation of another person. Sweat drenched her back and trickled down her temples. Would it never show itself? Finally, she couldn't stand the not knowing.

"Who’s there? Show yourself this instant!"

Shadows gathered in the corners and at the doorway seconds before it joined her. In the light from her wildly shaking lantern, she recognized the man—for it was merely a man and not a mummy—as the camel racer from the afternoon. She dropped her arm as a wave of relief swept through her body. "What are you doing here?" Belatedly, she realized she didn't know his name.

"Following you. I intend to finish what we started earlier." He shrugged and his linen suit, much like the one she'd seen on Max, tightened over his undeniably fit frame. His raven dark hair gleamed in the weak light while his eyes behind the glasses sparkled with determination—and heated intent.

The relief she'd claimed moments before dissolved as shivers tumbled down her spine. Whoever this man was, whatever he represented, she wanted the chance to explore why he made her feel completely undone yet curiosity and impatience won out over caution. "I have no business with you." Except to steal another mindless kiss that will make me forget the horrible things I've seen in Egypt.

"Is that so?" He pounced so fast she had no time to fend him off as he pinned her against a wall and crushed his mouth to hers.

“Run, little human.” He enunciated each word slowly. “If I catch you, I may bite.”

She felt a jolt of fear and lust and carnal desire swirl inside her like a hurricane. Cassidy leapt to her feet, turned, and ran. She didn’t know where she was going, but he’d said to run, and her instincts told her to listen. The pine needles and leaf litter on the forest floor didn’t hurt her bare feet as she expected. Her nipples pebbled from the mix of cool breeze and excitement. She could hear her own heart, her own lungs breathing in deep gulps of air as she ran as fast as she could.

Finally, when her legs burned and she didn’t dare run deeper into the forest, she stopped. She expected Garret to be right on her tail since he was in so much better shape than she was, but he was nowhere in sight. In fact, the forest was eerily quiet, every direction the same as the next.

“Garret,” she dared to whisper. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she imagined another run-in with an unfriendly wolf.

She began to creep back the way she ran, but with no clear path she could be getting more lost. “Lose your way?” Cassidy whirled around. How had he gotten ahead of her? He didn’t even appear winded.

“How did you—”

He began to stalk her, marching forward as if he planned to railroad right through her. She was forced to back up, not able to see what was behind her. When she stumbled, he hooked his hand under her arm so fast she didn’t have time to hit the ground. “Did you know that some wolves mark their mates with a love bite?” He continued his advance until her back hit a massive oak, scraping her bare skin.

“I never heard of wolves like those,” she said. Although she wasn’t an animal expert, she imagined wolves were similar to dogs in behavior. Never had she heard of a dog sinking its fangs into a willing bitch during copulation.

“You’re in Climax now, Cassie. There are things here you’ve never even imagined.” He spoke in riddles, as if keeping some big secret from her, but what? There were hikers and miners missing and dead, presumably from wolf attacks. And then there were wolves as friendly as a kitten. She didn’t know what to think of the wildlife in Climax.

He came inches from her and then hoisted her up against the tree with a hand wrapped around each thigh. She wrapped her arms around his neck, ready for a wild ride. That huge, impressive erection she’d been ogling all day was about to fuck her. She could feel the pulse in her pussy, strong and demanding, the liquid heat seeping out. “Yes,” she murmured.

“In their basest form, humans aren’t much different than animals. Sex is just one element that can bring out a man’s beast.” He moistened his cock in her overflow of juices, each swipe making her eyes loll back in her head. Just give it to me, damn it!

She didn’t want to hear a science lesson now. “Garret…” she said, trying to keep her tone even when she wanted to scream.

He chuckled again, the sexy sound making her gasp. “What do you want, baby?”

“You know exactly what I want—that monster between your legs so deep inside me I’ll feel like choking on it.”

Garret cocked an eyebrow. “Naughtier than ever, I see. I’ll remember that next time. Apparently I didn’t punish you long enough.”

She wrapped her legs tightly around his slim hips, locking her ankles. “My pussy’s on fire. Stop being cruel.”

He poised himself and then stalled. “Don’t forget, I just may bite.” Then he thrust in, filling her walls to overflowing. She cried out from the sudden intrusion, the intense shock of pleasure which took her by surprise. He wrapped one arm around her to protect her from the rough bark of the tree, the other supporting her hip as he fucked her. She could feel every inch of him sliding home, erasing all her desperation.

Just like before, he soon became more aggressive, his hand digging hard enough at her thigh to leave bruises. He pumped into her tirelessly, sending fresh assault after fresh assault of orgasmic sensations coursing through her veins.

Then he stopped, leaving only the sound of their heavy breathing.

“What’s wrong,” she asked between breaths. He had that torn look in his eyes again. “I’m not afraid of you hurting me. I trust you, Garret.”

“Not like this.” He pushed off from the moss-covered tree, taking her with him. With her arms and legs firmly around his body, his cock still throbbing inside her cunt, he walked them over to a soft patch of pine needles. The man was solid, sinewy muscle. He lowered them down gradually, his biceps bulging as he supported both their weights until her back finally rested against the cool ground.

“Kiss me,” she whispered.

He pressed his firm lips to hers, tasting, testing. Within a matter of seconds they were both locked in a passionate embrace joined by tongues and Garret’s cock.

Excerpt from Forever Love:

Dad was apparently running the vacuum in the living room, based upon the loud and annoying sound coming from downstairs. I listened with half an ear to the noise, idly wondering why the vacuum was so loud. A high-pitched whine came from downstairs, followed by the smell of smoke. Was that the fire alarm? What was going on?

I ran down the stairs to the living room, barely able to see through the haze of smoke. “Dad? Where are you?!” I screamed over the noise of the smoke alarm and vacuum.

Hearing a coughing noise coming from the kitchen, I ran into the room to see flames coming from the oven and my father using a towel to try to put them out. “Dad, we need to go. We need to call the fire department.” I pulled my dad toward the door and grabbed the cell phone out of my pocket.

“Hello, we have a fire at 224 West Front Street. Please send someone right away.”

Within minutes, the firemen arrived and set to work putting out the fire. I held on to my dad and wondered what happened. “Dad, why was there a fire in the oven? Were you trying to cook something?” Dad looked lost, like a small, frightened child. His eyes were glazed and his body was being wracked by coughing fits. The paramedics came over to take a look at him, alleviating a little of my worry. At least his cough was being treated. What was I going to do about his kitchen, though?

The fire was quickly put out; when the screeching of the alarm stopped, one of the firemen came over to talk with me. As he pulled off his helmet, I noticed his familiar face. It was T.J.

Smiling at the soot on his cheek, I said, “Thank you, T.J. Is everything okay in the house now?” I wanted to run my hand over his face and brush the soot off. Just being around him made my knees weak. You would think after sixteen years, I would be over him. Maybe my mind knows, but my body doesn’t yet, I thought sarcastically.

“Would you tell me about how you became a—Nightwalker?”

Jace walked to her and sat down next to her, all the while holding her gaze. He leaned in toward her, reaching out to caress her cheek with the back of his hand. My, are you a beautiful vision, gradh.

Ariya’s eyes widened. If she deciphered correctly, she believed he called her love. “I—thank you,” she said, shifting her position.

“So you can read even me now.”

She nodded. “I tried to stop it, but it’s too late now. The elemental that haunts me will eventually find me.”

“But how?”

Ariya swung her legs over to the side of the bed and leaned over. “I don’t know much about it. My father may have known something about the legend and the severity of damage it could cause but he died before I could find out where it’s from or what it will do.” Screams echoed within her memory. In her mind’s eye, she saw her parents hauled into the night air. She quickly replaced the thought of something more pleasant. The creature could now be feeding off her memories and fear if she wasn’t too careful. She felt Jace’s strong, muscled arm wrap around her and a sense of relief washed over her body.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, Ariya,” he said softly. “None of us will. I’ve alerted the Patriarchs to keep watch.”

“How can you kill a creature you can’t see coming?” Ariya’s voice strained with the hint of fear for the answer.

Jace placed his hand on hers and smiled. “Maybe not see but I can makes use of my other senses.”

Just as he said these words, he tenderly caressed her skin with his thumb. She looked up at him and saw a look she hadn’t seen before, until now. Softness covered his face and his eyes warmed in invitation. He leaned in and she waited with the anticipation of his lips upon hers. His mouth was warm, inviting and enticing her to open and allow him entrance deeper into her. Ariya’s body tingled with desire for him. The sensitive area between her legs warmed, she trembled with each caress of his tongue against hers. He slowly moved in closer, wrapping his arms around her and urging her to lie back on the bed. She welcomed his body, finding comfort in the weight crushing down on hers.

“Jace, I—” Her mind fought against her body, tempted to give into the warmth he spread across her.

“Perhaps we can willingly bring him here to fight me, man to man,” Jace said nonchalantly. “So to speak.”

Ariya wasn’t sure if the anger he arose in her was from the mood breaking or his deception into making her think she was wanted by him in those few sweet moments. Either way, she felt rage boiling to the top and before she could calm herself, it escaped her. “This isn’t a game, Jace!”

“I understand that. I also understand that you have to care about someone before you lose them.” He climbed off the bed. “Which should make me pretty safe after all.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean?”

Standing, he then turned and gave a little bow before heading to the dresser to retrieve a large comforter.

“I’ll take the couch in the living room while you rest here.” Jace walked to the bedroom door and placed his hand on the doorknob. “If you need me, I’ll be on a hunt.”

The door closed behind him and she saw the image in his mind; an anticipation for another feed on a beautiful woman he picked up somewhere off the streets. She sat on the bed with the kiss still lingering on her lips and mind. Despite her early words to remain far removed from Jace and his world, she couldn’t help feeling an absence in her heart once he left the room. Consequently, and for a moment, she wondered what it’d be like to be his.

* * * *

Ariya was in deep sleep when the door slowly creaked opened. Her conscious mind didn’t notice the figure in the room though his presence was strong enough to awaken her subconscious. She hovered between the two existences, trying to control the rise of temperature in her body.

“Ariya, don’t be afraid.” Jace’s voice was smooth, deep and inviting. A soft cloud of comfort filled every inch of the room. She stirred in her sleep. “It’s just me.”

Her eyes remained closed but she could still sense him across the room within the darkness.

Jace slowly removed his jacket, tossing it onto the floor. He watched her while he unbuttoned his white, long sleeved shirt, exposing the strong hard lines of his torso underneath. He moved toward her in long sleek steps with the grace of a cunning cat closing in on its prey.

Ariya smiled at the feel of him maneuvering onto her body. She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him down in a kiss. Their mouths mated in a heated passion as his lips moved to claim hers. Their heavy breaths broke the silence of the room. His body writhed against hers and she felt his hand slip down to her thighs, slowly moving closer to the innermost part of her. His body was like liquid fire to her, igniting a passion that had long lay dormant within her. His fingers seemed to hold electricity within him and each touch sent a wave of pleasure throughout her body. He moved toward her warm center, his fingers teasing the opening, driving her to insanity. He broke from her and leaned to kiss her cheek before his lips gently caressed her ear.

“Do you want me, Ariya?” Jace’s voice was like that of soft bell chimes. “Do you want to give yourself over to me?”

Ariya thought of herself in that Shelly girl’s position. Although she couldn’t partake of his blood, she would take of his body and give into the feeling that haunted her since she laid eyes on him.

“Oh, Jace,” she said softly. “I want you.”

“Angela, darling!” Her publisher, Darlene Fennel, greeted her with a kiss on each of her cheeks. “I want to introduce you to some very important people.” Her refined accent smoothed over each name with ease, and she gestured toward the small crowd surrounding her. Angela put on her best smile and nodded as each person said their ‘hellos’ and ‘evenings’. Then she saw him, and immediately her body froze.

“And this is Paul Sumner, our in-house publicist,” Darlene said with a grin and a wave of her hand.

The distinguished Brit was a few inches taller than her now that she saw him up close. His handsome, angular face accentuated his strong bone structure. Boy, did he have a clean-cut, sexy jaw line. She breathed in the spicy scent of his aftershave mixed with his natural male scent. He wasn’t a skinny man, nor too large, but she could tell the way his suit formed over his broad shoulders and strong body that he spent quite a bit of time at the gym. Angela had to focus so she wouldn’t be lifted away on the dreamy scent. Something about him proved irresistible, but she couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

“You know, come to think of it. I believe that’s how he met his wife once she sold her first book. How is Sadie doing these days?”

His back straightened as he nervously shifted from side to side. Hmm, I guess he didn’t like the mention of the wife. Which doesn’t change the fact that he is still married to her. He cleared his throat, obviously trying to regain his composure with a smile on his face.

“She’s doing well, I suspect,” he said, his voice a little annoyed.

Angela couldn’t deny her heart dropping at the sound of the ‘w’ word. She took note of the frown that crept upon his face once the word was spoken. Ugh! Of course! He couldn’t be looking that good and be single. She took a deep breath, placed the best smile she could plaster on her face, and focused on Darlene’s words.

“He is responsible for selling the most hard to sell books.”

Angela forced her eyes to look at Paul once again. “Well, I see how much faith you have in my book, Darlene.”

The tall redhead laughed politely and waved her hand toward Angela.

“Is this your first time in London, Angela?” Paul asked, turning his head slightly to the side.

Why did he have to say her name like that? Something about the way the sound came from him struck her, as if she was hearing it for the first time, his voice smooth, like hot liquid that oozed into her ears. She tried to calm her heart from beating so fast and forced herself to maintain her composure. Get it together, girl. This is a married man.

“Yes, actually it is,” she heard herself say.

“Has Darlene given you the proper tour of our beautiful city?”

Angela’s mind raced before she spoke. “Oh, I don’t know if I’d have time for all of that with my work and all.”

“Surely you can spare a little time. The sunrise and sunsets are especially breathtaking around this time of year. You have to catch it like Halley’s Comet, though, as they don’t show their faces too often with our weather. Shades of primrose, I recall. Soft against the fiery horizon. I know a café that has a wonderful view.”

“I thank you, but I may have to take a rain check on that.”

Paul nodded once. “It’ll be my pleasure to show you around.”

Air, that’s what she needed right about now. And more champagne. Definitely more champagne.

“Will you all excuse me? It was a pleasure meeting you.” Angela made sure she looked at each of the surrounding members of the group before she turned to Paul. His scent intoxicated her, and if she stood there a moment longer, she would be in his arms in a second.

THE PIRATE'S GAMBLE by Eden Winters

THE PIRATE'S GAMBLE by Eden Winters

One man, two lives. In modern day Jamaica, Ian Lewis enjoys a well-earned reputation as a shining star of the archaeology world. However, in the eighteenth century, he's notorious for other reasons: being the captain of a rag-tag crew aboard the pirate ship The Naughty Maid. With the help of a mysterious talisman and his knowledge of ancient treasures, he travels back in time to save priceless artifacts otherwise doomed to be lost forever.

His greatest treasure, however, wants to stay lost ... or rather, deeply in the closet. Tired of hiding the true nature of the relationship he shares with fellow archaeologist David Kane, Ian employs his pirate cunning in a gamble that just may cost him everything -- including his life.

“I’m Ian Lewis,” he had said innocently enough, extending a dirt-smeared hand.

“David Kane,” David replied, barely managing to keep his voice steady.

Those twin dimples appeared again as the man smiled, showing even, white teeth. “I’ve heard so much about you, Doctor Kane; I’m honored to finally meet you.”

David had heard about Ian, too, via rumors floating around the site, about how the handsome young archeologist had never talked about or been seen with a woman. Well, that certainly didn’t prove anything. David made it a point to be seen with lots of women, though they were merely acquaintances, and never any men who could be mistaken for anything but colleagues. But he had a discreet network of friends who wanted nothing more than an occasional tumble between the sheets. They weren’t openly gay or looking for long-term, either. It was an arrangement that worked well for all.

That night when he’d left the site he sought out one of those friends who, incidentally, had auburn hair and spoke English with an American accent.

The next day, working side by side with the very distracting Doctor Lewis, he reminded himself that getting involved could ruin his untarnished career. Plus, he didn’t know if the rumors of the man’s sexuality were true, so he kept his distance, feeling it safer that way.

On the third day Ian had cornered him. “Look, Doctor Kane, if you’ve got something to say to me then come out and say it to my face!” No dimples were showing now, only righteous anger and blazing green eyes.

“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean,” he answered defensively.

Ian snorted. “You won’t come within three feet of me, and whenever I hand you something, you won’t even touch me. Is it because I’m gay?”

“You ... you’re gay?” David stammered, secretly reveling in that knowledge, though he knew he could never act on it.

Those grass green eyes narrowed suspiciously. “You mean you didn’t know?” Ian asked, clearly surprised. “I thought everyone did. I certainly never tried to hide it. So, that isn’t why you’ve been avoiding me?”

“No!” David lied, unwilling to out himself. “I’m sorry if you feel I have been. It’s unintentional, I can assure you.”

“And you’re not a homophobe?”

“Good heavens, no! Some of my best friends are gay,” David hastened to assure Ian, even if, under pain of death, he’d never reveal his relationship with those friends.

Those intriguing dimples suddenly reappeared as the redhead smiled brightly and asked, “Want to have dinner with me, then?”

Enlisting the help of his best friend Talley and his best girl friend Marie, Mike tries to figure out the identity of the mysterious blogger. Unfortunately he suspects it may be a female student, since only his friends know he's gay.

Then a second blog entry makes him realize the blogger is someone close to him. Could it really be Marie? Or does Talley know more than he's letting on?

I finally admitted to Marie that her name was on the blog, too, but only because I wanted her help. “Prettiest, really?” she cooed, as if there were any doubt. She knows she’s pretty; she just wants to hear someone else say it. Crunching on her salad, she mused, “You and I should run for homecoming court. King and queen, right here! I know one person who’d vote for us.”

“You don’t know who’s blog it is,” Talley pointed out.

Right. That cooled her a little. “We should find out,” she said. “It can’t be too hard -- just ask everyone in class who’s already started their blog. I mean, really. It isn’t due for months so I’m sure only one or two people have bothered ...”

She trailed off and looked at me, a blank expression on her face. I’d seen it often enough to know that meant she was getting an idea. “Wait. Who do you think’s already started their blog?” she asked, looking at me.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. Someone super smart, or a brown-noser, someone who always gets good grades ...”

My gaze trailed around the cafeteria and settled on the hunched-over back of Jaime Tuttle. She sat at the end of the last table in the room, closest to the door, as if she planned to snarf down her lunch and make a mad dash for the library or something. God, no, I prayed. It couldn’t be ...

But Marie had followed my gaze, and a sly smirk spread across her face. Lowering her voice to a scandalous level, she whispered, “You don’t think her, do you?”

As usual, Talley seemed out of the loop. I could never tell if he was really as dumb as he looked, or if it was just easier for him to play that role. “Who?”

“Jaime Tuttle.” In a sing-song voice, Marie added, “She likes the gay boy. She likes the gay boy.”

I kicked her under the table. “Shut up, will you? Someone’ll hear you and then it’ll be all over school.”

Beside Marie, Talley mumbled, “I’m surprised it isn’t already. Ow!”

Her nails scratched his thick arm like a cat’s claws. “I can keep a secret, Talley,” she snapped. “You of all people should know that.”

I didn’t get a chance to ask what she meant by that -- hell, I’m his best friend, I know all there is to know about him, don’t I? But before I could find out, from the corner of my eye I saw Jaime stand and, for the briefest second, I could’ve sworn she looked my way.

Me. Great. Why does she have to like me?

Marie watched Jaime leave the cafeteria, then leaned over the table again, all business. “I’ve got a plan. She’s in my next class. I’ll just be all like hey girl, I hear you got the hots for my GBF --”

“Your what?” I asked.

Marie rolled her eyes. “My gay best friend, duh. Of course I won’t say that to her face. I don’t want her freaking out because the first guy she goes for likes dick.”

I tried to protest. “I’ve never --”

“Puh-leaze,” Marie cried, raising her voice to talk over me. “I’ll just say yo, I found your blog, and I saw you think Mike’s bringing sexy back, and I’ll see what she says. Simple as that.”

Talley grunted into his last slice of pizza. “Yeah, like she’s going to tell you.”

Over her shoulder, Marie told him, “You’d be surprised what some people tell me.”

The way she said it made me think she meant him. What could she know about Talley that I didn’t? But the bell rang before I could ask, sweeping us up with the crowd and ruining my chance to find out.

The footsteps come closer and I raise up a little, just enough to peer around the mare’s neck. Hank comes into view, his blond hair tamped down around his scalp in the shape his Stetson left behind. He runs a hand through the tangled strands, tousling them. The other hand tugs at the bolo tie he favors, loosening it to unbutton the collar of his shirt. “Delfino,” he says in a slow drawl that sounds like smooth bourbon poured into a chilled glass. “Don’t act dumb, kid. You know exactly why I called you out here.”

Behind him comes Delfino -- Hispanic, maybe my age, maybe a year or two older, with dark eyes like pools of liquid ink and black hair that falls straight across his forehead in a blunt cut. He has pouty lips that look too red to be real and cheekbones that hint at native blood. Why hadn’t I noticed this one before? He stands out from the others, from all the others, white or otherwise. He has an insolent air about him, a slow grin and sly eyes, that makes me wonder if Hank’s really the one in charge here or if Delfino has a secret or two he keeps hidden from the foreman.

He wears a threadbare work shirt, the chambray worn shiny in spots where the fabric rubs over his muscles, at his shoulders, his elbows, his biceps. He glances around and I duck down, hands flat against the mare’s withers to keep her quiet. She nickers gently into the bucket of feed I gave her when we first entered the barn and swats at me with her tail, threatening to dislodge the hat hiding my face. I push it down further over my eyes and hold my breath, waiting.

Why are they here? Hank says Delfino knows, and something in the air between them tells me they think they’re alone. If they find out I’m here, hiding, what will be said? I should’ve stood up as soon as they entered, cleared my throat, dropped the curry comb, something to announce my presence. Maybe if I stand suddenly, pretend I don’t even know they’re here, I can still get out before ...

I start to stand, rising my chin to peek out from under my hat, and what I see stops me in mid-stretch.

Hank’s shirt is completely unbuttoned now, hanging open to expose a firm chest covered with thick, graying hair and the start of a slight paunch above his belt. Delfino has closed the distance between them, his hand flat against Hank’s belly, the fingertips lost in the tufts of hair. He’s staring into Hank’s face but the foreman doesn’t see him -- Hank’s eyes are shut, lips parted slightly. As I watch, Delfino rubs his hand up Hank’s furry chest, the tip of his middle finger finding a hard, pink nipple amid the hair. Hank gasps, both hands dropping to the buckle of his belt. “That’s it,” he sighs as Delfino plucks his nipple, squeezing and teasing it erect. “God, yes.”

Holy shit.

I need to get out of here, now, I know it, but suddenly my knees have locked up and my hands are fisted in the saddle blanket still tossed over the mare’s back. A sudden heart beat throbs at my crotch, and in the confines of the tight jeans I wear, my cock swells with eagerness. My mind is a whirl -- Hank, here, Delfino, here, with me not ten feet away and watching.

Here.

Thank you, God, I pray silently. For this, here, now. For letting me see it. For letting me know things like this do exist between men. Can exist. For me.

Carefully I ease around the mare and, staying hunched over so I won’t be seen, I come up against the side of the stall. There are knotholes in the wooden slats, wide enough for me to peer through without being seen. Please keep doing whatever it is you’re doing, I pray as I squat in front of one of the larger knotholes. I have to tilt my hat back so I can press my face to the wood and look through.

Hank’s belt is unbuckled now, his fly open, his dingy gray underwear gaping through the fly with an obscene bulge. He leans back against a stack of hay bales and sighs Delfino’s name as the Mexican trails a hand down Hank’s belly, seeking the package beneath it. When Delfino grips the bulge, I see his fingers encircle Hank’s cock through the thin material and almost come in my jeans at the lusty moan that escapes Hank’s throat. “That’s it, Delfino. You know what to do.”

I watch, wide-eyed and breathless, as Delfino kneels in front of Hank. With both hands, he peels the underwear down, exposing a long, thin, hard dick that curves at the end like a question mark. Delfino ducks below it and, tongue out, licks at the tip of Hank’s hard shaft.

Yes, my mind cries as I rub my hand over the straining crotch of my jeans. Yes, yes, yes.

The visitor turned his body, like adjusting a puppet, and walked with deliberate steps straight to the lending desk. There he laid both hands on the wooden surface, bent forward, and asked, “Has the book arrived?”

He had long white-blond hair that hung in a straight curtain from his high forehead to below his shoulders. He wore a black T-shirt under a calf-length black jacket with black jeans and boots. His nails were long and cracked and dirty, like he had been digging in soil. There were white hairs on the back of his hands. His skin was too white. Involuntary images of the white larvae in compost heaps and earthworms rose in Robbie’s mind. And this man was old, very old, though Robbie couldn't have said how he knew that. The man's presence was a solid pressure that caused Robbie to take an involuntary step back.

He wore reflecting glasses, and Robbie saw himself, small and distorted in the lenses.

"Uhm, and your name is?" Robbie asked.

"I am Medr." His voice had a curious sound at the back of it, like the rubbing together of rough wings.

"Medr? Medr who? Or is it Mr. Medr?" Robbie asked, confused. The reflecting lenses disconcerted him.

"Medr. That is my name."

"Okay," Robbie stammered. "What is the title of the book, sir?"

"That does not matter. It matters that the book arrives," Medr said.

"Well, there is nothing waiting for you," Robbie said, flabbergasted.

"Then I will wait."

So he waited, perched on a chair like a big bird of prey, the long black coat hanging down to the floor. He did nothing as far as Robbie could see. He didn't read, he didn't fidget. He just waited. At 9 P.M. when the library closed, he stood up and left.

EXCERPT:

Now the bombardment stopped and, for a moment, all was silent. Then came the unsteady notes of a bugle at the lips of a man who clearly lacked experience with his instrument. Cracked as the sound was, though, even I recognised the order to charge. We rode from the ruins of the riding school, forming a ragged line as we emerged onto the plain. For a few moments we were trotting. I drew my sword, already finding it difficult to control the heavy blade against the movements of the horse. I worried that if we lurched I could end up pricking my own mount with the point and I wondered how I would cope at the gallop. Already some of the horses were stretching themselves to their full speed. Instinctively, others joined them. My own horse pushed forward and I could hardly have held him back, even had I wished to.

There was still half a mile to the British defences and we were hurtling forward. Dust rose all around, mingling with the smoke which still hung in the air from the artillery barrage. My ears were filled with the thunder of hoof beats and the cries of my companions.

"Deen! Deen!" "For the faith! For the faith!"

We rode on. Now, from the saddle, I could see across the pitiful defences to where my fellow Europeans lay with their muskets ready at their shoulders. Beside them, I saw crouching figures dressed in rags. I did not at first recognise them as the white women of Cawnpore, their finery destroyed, their beauty tarnished. Yet, seeing them steadfast beside their men, ready to reload and pass new weapons to the warriors, I had never thought them finer.

Now we were two hundred yards from the parapet. Now one hundred. Still we rode, with no fire from our enemy. Already, the horses were tiring and the impetus of our charge had been lost but we were almost upon them. Then, when we were just 50 yards from their defences, Wheeler's tattered army opened fire. Three nine-pounders belched flame and smoke. One round of grapeshot found our range. All around me, men and horses were thrown to the ground. Had we not galloped the whole way from the riding school, the speed and exhilaration of our charge might well have carried us to the parapet despite our losses but the horses were already slowing. As riders tugged desperately at their reigns to avoid the welter of bodies beneath our horses' hooves, the animals swung about, causing even further chaos in the line. Within seconds, the charge had turned into a mass of wheeling, panicked horseflesh, riders yelling in impotent rage, scarcely more rational than the beasts they rode.

Ahead of me a horse fell. Its forelegs scrabbled to raise it from the ground but then it collapsed, whinnying its pain and terror. Instinctively, I kicked Kuching on and we jumped the doomed creature but now all around was chaos. I swerved to avoid another fallen horse, reining back until Kuching stood, flanks heaving, eyes rolling in terror. Again and again, the British muskets fired. All around, it seemed, men were falling to the ground. Exposed to the rebels' fire by the inadequacy of the mud wall that offered their only protection, the British gunners nonetheless stood at their posts and I knew that it would be only seconds before the cannon were ready to fire again.

Excerpt:

After another week of trying to get high school kids to learn French, Carolyn Baxter’s brain switched gears as soon as she parked her car in the driveway. She had an online date tonight with her Master. Stopping her giddy thoughts, Carolyn had to slow down and match his pace. In the three months they’d been playing via webcam, she’d never seen his face, but she’d fallen hard. Finally, a man who made her work for her reward. She’d revealed her deepest secrets and longed for more.

Carolyn grabbed her bag and purse before locking up the car and opening the side door to her cute little house in the suburbs of Chicago. The access to a proper BDSM club was nearby, but it was the right man that she needed—not the flair. Even if she wasn’t going to be on display for a club, her online Master would be watching her soon. She wanted to touch up her makeup before Master Seth saw her. As she closed the door behind her, a strong arm grabbed her and a hand covered her mouth.

Fear gripped her. It couldn’t be real! She kept every door and window locked. Living alone not far from a big city had taught her not to be foolish and trusting. The strong man spun her, and she was faced with two more men.

No masks but they were dressed in black jeans and shirts. One was blond with blue eyes, and the other dark in both areas. Both had enough muscle to make her think twice about running. They grinned at her, and she shuddered. This wasn’t a robbery. She struggled and tried to scream, but the hand over her mouth made her feel suffocated. The hard form behind her sent confusing messages to Carolyn’s body. She was primed for sex play, but hers was all safe and online.

“Don’t fight. You wanted this.” The dark eyed man in front of her looked her up and down.

She shook her head. She didn’t know them. How could they say that?

The other man chuckled. “Sure you do. Sweetie, nothing on the internet is private. You looked hot doing that dirty stuff for your online Master, but we enjoyed it, too.”

Her face burned and tears welled up. Master Seth promised it was a secure line. She’d gone through a service that did background checks and gave a safe forum to match people. Did Seth let others watch? Had she been hacked?

“Don’t worry. We’re going to give you exactly what you wanted. We like to combine fantasies. Intruders are hot. Three guys—hey we’re happy to share, right Jones?” The blond one nodded.

“That’s right, Smith.” Jones walked up to Carolyn and unbuttoned her blouse.

She struggled, not knowing what else to do. Everything they said was true. In high school and college she’d had the intruder fantasy. It was her most embarrassing one—to be forced and taken by strangers. It was what had led her to find her submissive side. Wanting more than one man was her current fantasy.

She’d hoped Master Seth would fulfill her fantasies, not random strangers who hacked her. As Jones tugged open her blouse, Carolyn saw Smith undressing. The gorgeous muscle and growing cock made her relax for a second. It was her fantasy, and her body still craved it. So far, they hadn’t hurt her.

Jones looked her in the eye. “Very nice rack. We’ll leave the bra on for now. First you, need to get this. If we let you go, you don’t scream, you don’t run. You do exactly what we want, or we’ll tie you up, punish you and use you until we’re bored. And our boss doesn’t get bored easily. Then we’ll leave you tied up and call the cops, your neighbors and the principal of the school you teach at.”

Fear and rage gripped her tighter than the mystery man behind her. Was he the boss? His cock was hard, but he showed no fatigue at holding her. If the school and parents found out what she did on the weekends, they’d never let her teach. She’d be fired and have to move.

“Understand?” Jones asked as he pulled off his shirt.

She nodded. They were going to take what they wanted anyway. Maybe if she cooperated, they’d be less inclined to hurt her. Carolyn loved being submissive and her sexual fantasies fueled her desire to fully engage in the lifestyle, but she never wanted the extreme pain some subs did.

The hand lifted off her mouth, and she took a breath of cool air. The throbbing in her cunt embarrassed her, and when the arm around her body released, Carolyn felt off balance.

“Drop the blouse on the ground and lose the skirt.” Jones unbuckled his belt and opened his fly.

Carolyn let the blouse fall and slowly unzipped her skirt. The men were being careful. Only one undressed at a time so two were always watching her. She couldn’t out run or fight two of them—certainly not all three. Men liked her petite figure, but now, she wished she’d taken that self-defense class.

“Faster!” The third man smacked her rear.

She turned and looked at him. Tall and muscled, he had on all his clothing and stared at her commandingly. That voice made her tremble. She stared into his blue eyes and felt bold. Brown curly hair and deep brown eyes gave him a boyish look, but that handsome face was no-nonsense.

Then something shiny caught her eye. His belt buckle was an exaggerated ‘S’ that could be mistaken for a snake at quick glance. That symbol was Master Seth’s profile picture. It was the only visual clue she had about him. Her pussy tightened as she inched the skirt down. It’d been a rough day with no panties, but she’d done exactly what her Master wanted.

Carolyn couldn’t stop smiling. It had to be him.

Chapter One
A sharp, piercing pain to his head and strong inhale woke him. Jaxon Slater’s eyes flew open and shut tight, as if hoping it would dull the headache, which turned to a heavy pounding. He envisioned tiny men with ball-peen hammers beating railroad spikes into his brain. The thought would have made him grin if he’d not been in so much agony. He placed his hand to his forehead and pushed the palm hard against the spot between his eyes. The simple act seemed to relieve some of the intensity. He squeezed his eyes in a small gesture to will the pain away.

“God, why did I have to get loaded last night?” Why? How many times have I sworn I would never do this again?

The throbbing doesn’t seem quite so bad now, Jaxon thought with a small sense of relief. He recalled some words of advice given to him once: if he pinched the area between his thumb and first finger, it could make a headache go away. The trouble was that he didn’t know if it would work and did not want to remove his hand from his head for even a second to try.

Jaxon opened his eyes to blurred, dark spots. He blinked several times in an attempt to focus. Despite the pain, Jaxon tried to remember…. Where am I? His thoughts were sluggish and slow to respond. “What did I do last night?” A few memories floated just beyond his reach. A young woman’s face flashed in his mind. “Candy…. She drove us here….”

He recalled the front of the old house. Candy’s laughter sounded in his head, fresh in his memory. She had shot up the heroin first. It didn’t take him long to join in. Even the memory gave him a slight rush, thinking about the needle, sticking it in his arm. He opened his eyes again and found the ceiling of an abandoned house. Some of the tiles had rotted away, perhaps from water leaking through the roof. Decayed, the tiles littered the old linoleum floor. Water spots discolored other areas of the ceiling, giving off a weird tie-dye effect.

Wallpaper peeled off in layers, as if the room was in a slow process of discarding its covering, like a snake shedding its old skin. Jaxon struggled to sit up but fell back onto the stained, bare mattress.

“You dumb fuck!” He slammed his fist on the floor. The realization of his relapse brought self-loathing. Guilt and shame knotted an angry, hot coal in his gut. He remembered what his old sponsor, John B., warned him to watch out for.

“You need to watch the threes.”

“Threes?”

“Three days, thirty days, three years.”

Thirty days clean and sober.

Just two nights ago, he’d hooked up with a cute little number. Only he’d overslept and was late to work. His boss fired him on the spot. Dammit. His boss knew he was one of the hardest working guys on the crew.

“I can’t have you showing up late all the time, Jaxon,” his boss spouted, shaking his head and appearing to feel bad about letting him go.

Jaxon thought about his boss’s comment. All the time, hell. Just the third time I was late. Another three.

After being fired, he decided to go to a bar. He’d planned to have a soda and play a couple games of pool. The woman, Candy, came into the pub. She’d plopped right down on the barstool beside him. “Gimme a beer,” she ordered loudly to the bartender.

Pretty little thing. Blonde, petite, and a laugh so sexy you just knew she’d give good head. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he must have known he was headed for relapse, otherwise he wouldn’t have driven to the bar after being fired. He knew better. Later on, she’d kissed him; the tang of brew teased up fond memories of wild women and good beer.

Candy glanced toward the back of the room. “I bet you a drink I can kick your ass in pool.”

“You’re on.”

She won the damn game and sauntered back to the bar.

“Hey, he’s buying me a drink, and I’m having 151 rum.”

Jaxon, his ego bruised from losing to a woman, decided not to be outdone. “I’ll have the same.”

Candy took her shot glass, lifted it, and drank it in one swallow. Jaxon grinned, picked up a lighter next to a pack of cigarettes, lit the alcohol in his glass, and threw the flaming liquid to the back of his throat.

She laughed and kissed him again.

His younger sister, Merilee, always told him he was too handsome for his own good. She’d be wondering what happened to him by now. I better get to a phone and call her. Jaxon lay on the mattress, and broken shards of the night before clicked through his head. He recalled drinking a few more shots. The rest seemed beyond him, hiding behind a secret door in his mind. A few flashes: Candy’s sexy smile, the needle, the rush. One more blackout. Candy must have wanted something stronger, or he did, to end up here.

A cunning and baffling disease, he’d heard John B. say a hundred times. Everyone called him John B. because there were other men in the A.A. home group with the first name of John and because last names were not used in the meetings. John B. told him, “You don’t even know you’re in a relapse. It’s why you call me before you get into trouble.”

John had been dead for years now. Still, his voice often rang loud and clear in Jaxon’s mind. He pulled himself up to a sitting position. There was...something he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

Jaxon stood up and tucked in his T-shirt. He glanced down at his worn Levi’s 501 button fly. His belt was unfastened and hung from the loops. He pulled it tight, notching it at his thirty-two-inch waist. His leather cowboy boots lay next to the old, stained mattress. Jaxon shook involuntary at the thought of sleeping there all night. “Nasty!” His voice was full of disgust. “How did I go downhill so damn fast?”

~Excerpt~

No matter where she wandered off to or who she mingled with, Kane kept May in his line of sight. She was a city girl through and through, and yet she blended in with everyone from Whispering Mountains.

He watched as she carried on conversations with the ranch hands, a few teachers, the local veterinarian, and even a few cowboys who hadn’t had a chance to change out of their well-worn jeans and scuffed boots before attending the wedding.

In one long gulp, Kane downed the last of the strong liquor he had been swirling around in his glass. He tried to remain stoic as he watched May dance with her sisters and mingle with just about everyone but him and his brother. She thought she was getting away with dodging them, but she had no idea how wrong she truly was.

“Cousin, you’re going to break that glass in your hand if you don’t ease up.” Jacob grinned as he pried the helpless glass from Kane’s fingers.

When Jacob turned to Remy, who was damn near scowling, Kane looked around to see what had his brother so pissed. A neighboring rancher was asking May to dance.

Jacob leaned closer to Remy. “If you want her, why don’t you just go and get her.” He turned back to Kane again. “Put your claim on her so the single men will quit sniffing around her and so me and the rest of the cousins will stop making fun of the both of you.”

Kane narrowed his eyes at his cousin. “Advice from the man who secretly pines for May’s baby sister?”

Jacob laughed. “We are discussing your personal life, not mine.” Jacob pointed a finger toward the open bar, and both brothers turned in that direction. All of their male cousins and even their own brothers were grinning at them.

Remy turned back to Jacob. “Dear God, we must look like a couple of sad idiots.”

“Yep, you do. So stop standing over here in the corner watching men hitting on your woman,” Jacob added before finally walking off.

Apparently that was the kick in the pants both Remy and Kane needed to get them stalking toward May and the man who was eager to get her on the dance floor. Kane reached her just as Remy came to stand beside him.

“Back off,” Kane warned.

The man looked from Kane to Remy, nodded, and walked away without a word.

“What is wrong with the two of you?” May said in a hushed tone, fuming as she stormed off the dance floor. She slipped outside the tent, away from prying eyes. When she finally stopped, she turned with her hands on her hips. “Was it necessary to make a scene in there? You can’t tell me who to dance with. Neither of you!”

“You were only going to turn him down, like you’d done with all the others. We were just saving you some time,” Remy said, clearly ignoring her glaring eyes as he slowly walked around until he was behind her, pressing his body to hers.

Kane watched as May closed her eyes, as if Remy’s hands halted her ability to think about anything else. Her hands trembled as she placed them on top of Remy’s, which were on her waist.

“Look at me,” Kane said as he closed the distance between them. Cupping her delicate face in both hands, he captured her lips with his. It was soft and simple, yet his dick was pounding against the zipper of his slacks, yearning to be set free. “No more running. I want you, sweetness.”

The soft moans that fluttered out were music to his ears. She sounded so wanton.

“I want you, too, princess,” Remy added as he kissed along her neck and shoulder, pulling more moans from the delicate woman standing between them. “Don’t you want us, May?”

Kane watched her closely. When May opened her eyes, he saw the hunger arise, and the desire shone clearly in her eyes. He kissed her again, whispering against her moist lips, “Answer the question, princess.”

A shaky sigh skated against his lips just before May spoke. “I–I want you.” She held Kane’s gaze, wrapping one arm around his waist, pulling him flush against her quivering body as she hooked her other arm around Remy’s neck. “I want you both.”

RICOCHET by Sandra Sookoo

RICOCHET by Sandra Sookoo

They're in it to win it - or die trying.

Willa Rayes, only daughter of a legendary Lingorian fighter pilot, can fly any ship in the galaxy. Better than her brothers, in fact. But does that get her any respect? Not as long as she has breasts. Winning the Nebulon Trike will not only force her family to notice her, it'll be her declaration of independence from men in general.

Then she meets her race partner, Stratton Sinnet. Arrogant and chauvinistic, he ignites her libido like no man ever before. And threatens to send her well-planned strategy straight to hell.

A bounty hunter by trade, Sin enters the Trike for one reason: money. Somewhere among the racers his quarry is hiding, but he's not worried. He always gets his man, and winning the race will be a nice bonus. It sure would be a hell of a lot easier, though, if he wasn't saddled with a know-it-all navigator who's getting on his last nerve - and under his skin.

As the checkpoints go by and the danger escalates, the fight for control, the lead - and satisfaction - approaches supernova heat. Burning away their resistance, and the tough shells that protect their one vulnerability ... their hearts.

Warning: This story contains a hot, bald bounty hunter whose sex appeal rivals his cockiness; a smart-mouthed pilot who refuses to let a mere male beat her in anything; and love scenes that'll make you'll think a star exploded. Dramamine recommended to counteract the effects of fancy flying.

Marshall Galaxy—Beta, year 2060

“Team five will consist of Willa Rayes…” The announcer paused as he shuffled through his paperwork, and low murmurs swept through the crowd. The urge to grin tugged at Willa. She squelched it. Better not appear too confident. At least her reputation had come before her. They should be in awe; she’d wipe the racecourse with all of them. Willa held her breath, disconcerted she’d missed the last team’s names while lost in thought. “Willa Rayes and Stratton Sinnet. Please take your places to the left of the podium.”

Willa’s heart plummeted into her churning stomach, even as her pulse accelerated. Stratton Sinnet? There had to be a mistake. She glanced around the hangar but didn’t see anyone fitting his description. Though she’d never met the man, his reputation preceded him too. Rumored to be the louse of the galaxy, he’d been dubbed a bounty hunter, a con, a thief and a womanizer, among other things. The only redeeming quality she’d heard was that he could pilot a craft with a decent amount of knowledge and skill.

No matter. No skid mark of society was going to keep her from winning this race.

Shoving her way through the tightly packed bodies, she crossed to the stage. Her boot heels rang against the grating of the steps as she climbed to the stage. A few murmured words of congratulations from the other participants later and she took her spot at the end of the line. The announcements of the next teammates droned on, and still her racing partner didn’t show.

Where the hell is he? This isn’t playtime.

She flipped the end of her black ponytail over a shoulder in frustration, and that was when she caught sight of him—Stratton Sinnet or more commonly known throughout his fan base, Sin. He moved through the crowds with the grace and easy confidence of a celebrity or a politician, shaking hands and even signing an autograph or two for the children lingering in his path. A few whispers of Sin accompanied the spectacle of his arrival, while sycophantic, female groupies and wannabe male pups followed in his wake. As she watched, a tiny part of her mind agreed he was indeed the personification of sin.

The man was tall, probably a tick over six feet, and his creamy, light-cocoa skin gleamed with a thin sheen of sweat. Not surprising in the hangar’s sweltering temperatures. Rich-brown eyes seemed to take in every aspect of his surroundings even as he joked and laughed, although they were hard, empty, no trace of happiness or humor behind them.

Willa moistened her bottom lip with the tip of her tongue. He paused at the base of the metal stairs, and his gaze met hers for a moment. Slowly, as if he meant for her to know exactly where she stood in his estimation, he raked his gaze down her body. She shivered, her skin almost heating under such blatant perusal, but she stood her ground, staring back, willing him to look her in the eye.

When he did, she stumbled back a pace. His sensual lips edged upward in a grin that sent a rush of sensation between her legs. She squeezed her thighs together and swallowed—hard. Yes, Sin was a good name for this man, with his liquid brown eyes and mouth that probably had made more than a few females beg. A thin goatee graced his face, the meticulously groomed ribbon of a beard outlining the sharp cut of his jaw and ending at his earlobes. Other than that scarce facial hair, Stratton Sinnet was bald. Every move was calculated to bring attention to a lean, powerful body that his tight-fitting cream trousers and billowing black silk shirt couldn’t come close to hiding.

Of course, the damned man had to be handsome. Not only that, he was very aware of how good he looked. She narrowed her eyes. I detest attractive, arrogant men.

As he mounted the stairs and walked the length of the stage, she shook her head, clearing her lustful thoughts. This man was nothing to her but a navigator, the second of her team. He could take his reputation and shove it, for all she cared. Sometime during the course of this race, she’d bring him down a peg or two, show him not all women were meant to fawn over him simply because of his pretty face and body.

Barely aware of the remaining team announcements, Willa focused on Stratton’s approach. When he stood before her, she drew herself up to her full height and extended her right hand. “Good afternoon. I’m Willa Rayes, and I’ll be your pilot during the Nebulon Trike.”

“Now, see, here’s where we’ll have a problem.” Stratton grasped her hand, holding on to it much longer than necessary. “I’m Stratton Sinnet. I’m the pilot. You are my navigator, and I always get what I want.”

She ignored her annoyance. Now was not the time or place to call him out. It was hard enough to control the heat his smooth-as-glass voice stirred in her stomach. “Not today. I’m always the pilot, so you’d better get it into your skull that I’m in charge.” She wrenched her hand from his grip, resisting the urge to wipe it on her pants. Time to lay down the ground rules. “As soon as we’re assigned a ship, I need you to enter the coordinates to the first checkpoint. Also, I’ll need a status report of the ship itself, as well as a listing of any skills you may have.”

“And I need you to shut your yap.” Stratton’s gaze constantly roved over the other racers before focusing on her. Again she reeled beneath the force of those eyes. “Look, you may be important on your home planet, but here, you’re my navigator.” He pinned her with a glare that could have frozen water. “There’s more at stake in this race than whatever it is you’re here for. Now, you leave the flying to me, and if you’re a good girl, I might let you rub my feet at that first checkpoint.”

Willa seethed, clenching her hands into fists so tightly her nails bit into her palms. She ground her teeth as surprised laughter erupted around them on the team stage. Remembering why she’d entered the race in the first place, she stepped into Stratton’s personal space and drilled a forefinger into his chest. “I rub no man’s feet, and I don’t take orders from them. You don’t have the right to treat me like one of your conquests.”

More announcements sounded over the speaker system, and a high-pitched squeal from the universal translator made her blank out for a couple of seconds. Sometimes the technology didn’t mesh with her neural circuits when there was too much stimulation or other translators in the vicinity.

Stratton’s beautiful mouth lifted in a grin. “Looks like they’re handing out ship assignments. As your pilot, I’d better go claim ours.”

“Step off, newbie.” She gave him another couple of pokes, loving the surprise that flickered deep in his eyes. “I can pilot any craft as well, or better, than any man here, so it would be in your best interest not to piss me off. Otherwise, I’ll make sure you never get past that first checkpoint.” Her voice had risen steadily through her diatribe.

Startled silence cut into the general melee in the hangar as every eye stared at her. Willa was beyond caring. She gave him one last poke, ignoring the hard-packed muscles beneath the thin fabric of his shirt. “I don’t want any more excuses. Get your rear into the bays. I’m going to find out which bird we’re assigned.” She turned on her heel so quickly her ponytail whipped around, and she felt it smack his chest.

Stratton Sinnet could rot. There was no way she was giving up control to the likes of him.
