BEST I EVER HAD by Wendi Zwaduk

BEST I EVER HAD by Wendi Zwaduk

A Dirty Bits Short Novella

The objective—keep her safe. No one said anything about falling in love.

All she wanted was a pint of ice cream, not to be a witness to a double murder. Good thing Emma’s got not one, but two, sexy men willing to keep her safe. As long as she can keep her hands to herself.

Sam’s mission? To find the man responsible for the murder. He’s not going to rest until the streets are safe, even if it means having his best friend guard his best girl. It’s the best option, right?

Quint never dreamed he’d be attracted to his best friend’s lover…and his best friend. He’s got to keep his hands to himself all while figuring out what he wants from life, even if love equals Emma and Sam in Quint’s bed.

Is love in the cards or are they going to go up in flames before they get started?

“It’s always hotter than hell right before the sun goes down.” Emma Rhodes tugged the hem of her tank top. No amount of shifting would get the air moving between her shirt and her body.

“I don’t want to be hot,” she muttered. “I don’t want to be in hiding, either.” She turned her back on the sliding doors. “Aren’t you tired of this, Quint? We live together because Sam wants to keep me safe. How crazy is that?”

“Em, it won’t be much longer. Trust Sam. I do.” Quinton Reynolds widened his stance at the front door. “He’s not here, but he does care. We won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Thanks.” Emma threw her arms around him and rested her head on his chest. She loved Quint, but some days being alone with her roommate-slash-bodyguard sucked. She missed her husband, Sam.

“If you don’t behave, I’ll turn you over my knee and spank the sass out of you. Bet Sam would love to watch that,” he said with a wink and released her. “He’d watch and insist I make your ass nice and pink.”

She knew that mischief in his eyes. Sam and Quint always managed to find trouble. Protection or not, she didn’t dare doubt his words. If Quint wanted her over his knee, he’d have her and Sam would enjoy it. Hell, she knew more about Sam and Quint than they realized. Since the night she heard them making love on the couch, she knew they weren’t just friends. Seeing the men demonstrate their love for each other turned her on. Yes, Sam married her, but she’d always known about his bisexuality and the secret affair didn’t bother her. He needed someone else and Quint fit the bill. Great. Maybe someday they’d invite her to play with the both of them. She could only hope and fantasize.

A breeze twirled in through the open sliding glass door and tickled her back. She breathed in the sweet scent of the flowers on her balcony and an idea crossed her mind. She strolled into the bedroom and traded the tank top for her bikini top.

“Might as well be comfortable while I’m cooling down. God knows it’ll give Quint something to look at.”

Trying very hard not to get her hopes up, Daphne Fleming knocked on the hotel room door. The Comic/Fantasy/Sci-Fi convention attendees had packed the place already, but for Daphne it was simply an excuse to meet some non-celebrity men in person. Her four guys had texted her their room number and had a spare key waiting for her.

It wasn't like her to hook up with strangers. Technically, she'd never met them in person before, but she knew them. Men online had disappointed her again and again, but this wasn't some dating connection. She'd found them while teaching a class for their online coven for men. Modern day pagan warriors for good impressed her, but of all the groups of men in her class, these four were special. The very idea of fighting for good in real life turned her on, and she'd spent tons of time with them via webcam in the last few months.

They weren't using the coven to meet women either. The men were clearly bisexual and involved with each other already.

Plus they had power! Two of them especially possessed strong energy that pulled at her. She needed to meet them.

Being a sensitive had its advantages, like feeling people out before she got too close to them. The fact that she could sense how many men were liars and users out in the world made her sad at the prospects. Somehow she'd lucked into four guys who, much like herself, didn't fit into the mainstream.

The door opened and four sexy geeks stood there staring at her. She hugged them without a word. They'd chatted online; Skype was a wonderful thing. L.A. wasn't far from San Diego, but she didn't have the money to drive back and forth all the time plus missing work, and they had a business to run.

"Who's minding the store?" Daphne asked.

Elvis grabbed her big suitcase. "I have my brother running it for now. He's not much of a gamer, but he'll do it for the money."

She sat on one of the two double beds and admired the guys. Elvis was tall with brown hair and blue eyes, cute but the type to be all business or all fun. Daphne believed he had a switch somewhere. When she joked during the class, he never got it.

"Something to drink?" Julius offered, gesturing to the cooler perched on the ledge by the window.
"No, I'm good." Daphne felt like the center of attention and let herself reach out to feel the men mentally. They were as wonderful as she'd felt from home.

Julius was blond with brown eyes and an expressive mouth. He wasn't as tall as Elvis, but supposedly was the handyman of the group. She knew he and Kurt had been in college together and became lovers there. The bond between them was strong, but she felt the love flowing in all directions.

Kurt sat on the other bed, watching her. Staring back, she smiled. His brown hair and ordinary face made him easily overlooked, but he had a big heart. And she'd seen him shirtless. The things the five of them had done online! But what were your mid-twenties for if not enjoying life? Great sex while trying to do good things was more than most people had.

Helping people was something she and Kurt had in common. He'd taken a year after college to volunteer building homes and helping people after disasters. Then he'd found Julius again. She was glad. The four of them made a very sexy sort of relationship.

Yet from the moment she'd met them online, she'd felt their need that was muffled and clamped down like a secret. Without a woman there wouldn't be true happiness. Bisexuality was still a misunderstood taboo to many.

The last guy sat at the desk and tapped on his laptop. The geekiest of them all, Nolan Haller was great with a computer and played every game under the sun. He loved the fantasy world more than the real one at times.

"Do I disappoint you, Nolan?" Daphne kicked off her chunky black boots.

She was pleased with the vibe of the men. All were attractive, not bodybuilders but hot geeks. The guys were all in jeans and T-shirts that showed their comic love and loyalty.

Joining them at Comic Con was the most natural thing in the world. She loved much of the features she'd see here. Her Buffy the Vampire Slayer T-shirt and black jeans let her fit right in with their various comic shirts.

Nolan turned. "No, but we're not going to jump on you either. We're not animals."

Elvis sat next to Daphne. "It's true. We want to get to know you more in person, not just hook up."

She smiled. They were telling the truth. "So do I, but Nolan is the one who turned our online meetings dirty when he asked me to flash you guys via webcam. Then he flashed me. He even started the sexting stuff. I figured he'd be the most eager."

Nolan closed his computer. "We've been doing online dates and chats for months. Either I'm going to be all over you or have some self-control."

The heat and testosterone in the room worked on her. "Such gentlemen, especially considering we've seen each other largely naked, just not in person."

"You're like a fantasy that hopped out of the computer." Julius sat next Kurt.

"I'm real. I promise. So no one is disappointed? Good." She leaned over and kissed Elvis.

A spark ran through her. He held a lot of power but contained it. A powerful grounding influence if she ever needed it. It'd felt so right, but reality would prove out. That's what she had to know. Was it real? Her hands roamed under his shirt, and he was lean with nice muscle tone. When he pulled away, Daphne saw him blushing. "We're not just about sex," he said.

"I know, but we won't be ourselves and relax until we take the edge off." She looked over at Kurt and Julius. "Don't you agree?"

"Totally." Kurt smiled and tugged off Julius' shirt.

For a moment she watched the two men kiss as they undressed each other. In the geek world, she could have four random men just screwing her any day. But Elvis was right; it was more than sex. The connection was special, and the bigger the bond and more intimate they were, the stronger they could be. Plus men touching each other made her insanely wet!

She yanked off Elvis' Batman shirt and opened his fly. His hips lifted as she dragged the jeans and boxers down. Sensing Nolan watching her, she looked and caught him staring. Elvis' cock hardened as she stroked it and she motioned for Nolan to move closer.

"Get us all naked and run?" Nolan asked as he approached.

She smiled and kissed him. "Why would I leave four hot and horny men? I'm not a tease. I'm as eager as you are."

Can Lisa and Jason help Deanna change her vacation nightmare to the best vacation ever?

Deanna woke up the next morning almost in a daze from the scene she had witnessed the previous night. She was incredibly horny after seeing Lisa and Jason fuck, but she was also incredibly scared to face Jason that morning. Or for all she knew, she might be facing Lisa and Jason, if Jason had already told Lisa about her watching them? She had no idea what to expect as she rolled out of bed.
She wandered into the kitchen to start coffee. She was glancing out the window when it was finished. She turned to get the milk from the refrigerator and bumped into Jason’s bare chest. She jumped in surprise.
“Damn”, she called out, “I didn’t even hear you there.”
Jason stared at her for a minute and put a finger to his mouth. She knew that meant Lisa was still asleep. Her friend was never an early riser. Her eyes wandered over his chest and defined abs before looking in his eyes to judge his mood that morning. He didn’t have a shirt on which was making it even harder to appear calm than it already would have been. Jason smiled.
“Wanna bring your coffee onto the patio?” He asked.
Deanna nodded and followed him outside. She knew this meant he was going to talk to her about the previous night. The only bright side was that his request to go outside meant that he hadn’t told Lisa what had happened yet. Jason was so hard to read. He wasn’t showing any expression, so she wasn’t sure how he felt about her watching them last night.
She leaned up against the deck and watched as Jason’s eyes surveyed her. She was a little uncomfortable with him. He wore only a pair of blue mesh shorts, and she couldn’t help but stare a bit as she thought about the enormous cock that she had seen inside of them the night before.
“Can we talk about last night?” He asked.
“I’m sorry”, she blurted out quickly, “ I came in after I fought with Mark, you guys left the door open, I shouldn’t have stayed, I’m sorry.”
Jason held up one hand and said, “Whoa hold on….one part at a time, what happened with Mark?”
She explained the details of the argument quickly, reassuring him impatiently that she wasn’t hurt or upset by the fight. She appreciated his concern, but was more interested in what he had to say about her voyeurism. More importantly, she wanted to know if he had told Lisa about her.
“Ok”, Jason said slowly, “I get why you came to the room, and I get that we left the door open, but why did you watch us?”
Deanna inhaled sharply. Jason seemed to have a bullshit meter that would see right through her if she lied to him. Although the truth could have bad consequences, she decided she was so screwed at this point that things couldn’t really get any worse.
“I was turned on”, she admitted shyly, “I walked in on you and wanted to stop watching but I couldn’t.”
Jason looked at her expectantly. He knew there was more to the story. He just waited for Deanna to continue.
“Lisa is my friend, but I think she’s sexy, and seeing her naked turned me on”, she said quietly.
“Are you a lesbian Deanna?” Jason asked.
“No, no”, she answered quickly.
“Bisexual?” He questioned, “No judgments if you are.”
“I’m not sure”, she confessed, “I haven’t been with a woman, but I’m attracted to them, and I’m very attracted to Lisa.”
Jason breathed a sigh, just taking it all in. He wasn’t really sure what to say to Deanna. He knew it was odd that she watched her friend, but it made his cock hard to think about her being excited by Lisa. She wasn’t as sexy as Lisa was, but she was definitely an attractive woman. He chose his words carefully.
“I guess the question kinda is”, he said deliberately, “Were you interested in watching her or both of us?”

Josh stared with awe at the tiny little car that pulled up next to his truck. There was no way that thing had made it to Lobo Basin from anywhere in Texas. It had to have ridden on a flatbed or something. Seriously, it was like a wind-up toy. At least it had a Dodge emblem on it. That meant it was solidly built, but sheesh

The lady who stepped out of the car shouldn’t even be a blip on his radar. She wore a pair of leggings under a man’s button-down shirt that had to be at least fifty sizes too big, horn-rimmed glasses and a pair of ugly flats. The way her hair was pulled back, it looked as if it was a dull, mousy brown.

So why every corpuscle in him stood up and took notice, Josh couldn’t say. Still, even though he’d just hopped in his truck to drive away, he got out and headed back into the store.

She was chewing her bottom lip, looking at the push-button cappuccino machine with a vaguely concerned look on her face.

Damn. Josh was pretty sure he couldn’t help with that and he wanted to help her in a pretty urgent way. Too bad she wasn’t looking at personal massagers. He stuck his hands in his pockets and wandered over.

“I bet Dolly could fix you up with a coffee. Or there’s the diner. I could walk you over.”

“Pardon me?” Bright green eyes flashed up at him, too pretty to hide behind those glasses. Oh damn. He could snap her up. Eat her. Like a rabbit. His cock started to press against his zipper.

“Coffee. I like coffee. You obviously like coffee. We could go have some. Together.”

“Thank you, but I don’t think so.” She turned her back on him, dismissing him, just like that.

He almost took a step back, surprise making him a little stupid. He probably wasn’t all that and a bag of chips but most women at least showed interest in his lanky, blond good looks. He tipped his cowboy hat back, staring. “Is it just me or are you always this rude, honey? I mean, it’s coffee. I didn’t ask if you want to knock boots.”

He got another one of those looks, wide eyed and bright. “Excuse me?”

“Well, you’re new in town and I was just bein’ friendly. No need to get snotty.”

“Snotty.” One eyebrow shot up. “Good Lord and butter, I just need a couple of groceries, not to get harassed and called names. Back off.”

Josh drew himself up, already mentally cursing his cowboy pride. Still, he opened his mouth right up and said it anyway. “Too bad, honey. You could use some loosening up. You’ve got a stick up your ass a mile long.”

“Tell me you don’t have any children.”

The words surprised the living fuck out of him. Josh blinked. “Not yet. Why?”

“Because I’d hate to believe that I’d have to teach children raised with such atrocious manners.” She turned tail and headed right up to Minnie at the cash register, the old bitch grinning at him like the dog she was.

Shit. Josh didn’t know whether to laugh or spit on the floor. In the end, he decided to laugh before grabbing a cup and hitting up the coffee machine, getting it to spit out a fancy cappuccino. He made it to the register before the little gal was done, sliding it down in front of her.

“Truce? I’m Josh Bolton. I’m sorry if I was rude.”

“Cheri. Cheri McBride.” Those eyes met his again and he felt that look deep in his balls.

“Nice to meet you.” He was about to ask her about being the new schoolteacher when Cheri turned to Minnie.

“Is there an electrician you can recommend?” Cheri asked.

“They put you in the old Lupin house, hmm? Paulo, honey. He’s the best. Number’s right there on the board.” Minnie’s eyes met his, challenging. Everyone knew about him and that fucking bastard, Paulo, which was embarrassing enough. To have Minnie give the new lady that asshat’s number, right there in front of him…

“You ought to get you someone in from Lordsburg.” When Cheri glanced at him, Josh shrugged.
“Paulo’s only a handyman.”

Minnie growled, so low only Josh heard it. “He’s a journeyman electrician and plumber. He’ll do fine.”

“Excellent. I just need to know my baby laptop won’t explode. It has a bunch of software for the children.”

“What went on the fritz?” Minnie ignored him completely but that was okay with Josh.

That way he could move close enough to scent her. Her shampoo had cinnamon in it. Cinnamon and honey.

“The…” She shivered, and he swore he could see her nipples draw up. “The plug in the kitchen. I need everything checked out.”

“Well, you call Paulo. You gonna buy anything else, Josh, or are you just going to ogle the poor young lady?”

Josh snapped out of his daze, his eyes rising from Cheri’s chest. “I’m good. I-If you don’t mind, Miss Cheri, I might stop by. There’s been rattlesnakes in that house before.”

“Rattlesnakes?” Her eyes went wide.

“Nonsense. Have Paulo spread salt around, that’ll fix them.”

He was going to have to growl. He did actually growl, subvocalizing enough for Minnie to back off a foot or so. “I’ll drop by,” he repeated. “Soon. Enjoy your coffee.”

There was no way he was letting Paulo have this one.

No way in hell.

Home from her second tour overseas, Lt. Stacey Andrews had enjoyed her leave so far. Hanging out with her family in Los Angeles made it seem real. No more patrols or looking over her shoulder, unless she went into the wrong neighborhood, of course. Home felt safe, but she was still a small single woman a lot of men underestimated.

She parked her SUV and headed for her aunt's spirit shop. She needed to reconnect with her coven. Being both a soldier and Wiccan might sound like an odd combination, but to Stacey, it was all about working for the greater good. Evil had to be contained in whatever way possible.

Chimes jingled overhead as she entered. Lavender incense greeted her, along with the warm colors of autumn filling the small front shop. Crystals, jewelry, candles, and such were sold there to pay the rent. The real magic happened in the back rooms. Wicca training, various lessons, and coven meetings brought people together here. Empowering women in the rough city was Aunt Bitsey's mission.

"Miss me?" Stacey asked.

Bitsey looked up from her display of fairy necklaces. "Blessed be. Don't you move!"

Stacey froze and waited for the inevitable. Burning sage wafted around her as her aunt, clad in a gauzy green dress, muttered cleansing words to release the violence and keep evil away. Finally her aunt set the items aside and hugged Stacey hard.

"I'm fine." Stacey hugged her back. "How's everything here?"

"Oh, you know, always some trouble going on in a big city. Sandra had a vision of you." Bitsey headed to the back room and nodded at a young woman to go watch the front.

"A vision with me involved?" Stacey took a seat in the small room where some of the psychics did readings. Her aunt closed the door so they wouldn't be disturbed.

"Yes. Not about what you were doing while away, but something you needed to know when you came back. This is about your future." Bitsey sat stiffly.

"My love life? I could use one." Stacey grinned. There were men she was interested in, but none of them had made a move. All the men were soldiers who worked together, so things could get complicated if she tried to start something. Not to mention, how could she pick among four great guys?

"Sort of your love life, but it's bigger than that. She sees you surrounded by four men, all attractive and all fighters. The five of you are joined by love and a purpose. She sees you on a mission for us." Bitsey tapped on her tablet and handed it to Stacey.

The news articles were about missing women from the beach. Midnight swims, early morning training for triathlons, and even members of a high school girls' swim team had disappeared. No trace of bodies, the women -- nothing. People searched frantically and rewards had been offered.

"What happened?" Stacey asked.

"The police and Coast Guard investigated. I've seen other military types out there too." Bitsey shook her head. "Something is very wrong, and it's beyond what they can handle."

"You mean it's mystical?" Stacey asked.

"I believe so. We've tried to investigate, but they block our access. You and your friends might be able to help out."

"Do you have any idea what is causing the disappearances? A spell? A curse? Is it a person attacking them?" Stacey had never wanted to mix her military life and her Wiccan one, but people were missing. This time there didn't seem to be a choice in the matter.

"It's an object that triggered it. Something was unearthed that turned some people wrong somehow. We can't get specifics without getting closer, but the missing people are dead. Their energy has been consumed. You must be very careful." Bitsey put her hand on Stacey's.

"I won't be alone. This is an odd thing for the military to handle, though." Stacey knew she'd never approach it alone.

"That's why it needs your touch. Do you know the four men Sandra saw in her vision? She seemed very certain they belonged with you long-term." Bitsey smiled suggestively.

Stacey felt her cheeks grow hot. "I think I know. They're all attractive and good men. They'll want to help with this problem. Maybe we are all supposed to work together long-term?"

"Sandra made it sound very personal. Intimate." Bitsey shrugged. "I don't mind alternative lifestyles, you know that. However, the men seemed to be involved together as well. Sandra was confused, but she trusts the information she gets."

Stacey smiled. Sandra was Bitsey's lover and best friend, another aunt in Stacey's mind. "Sandra is never wrong, is she? I'll go round up the guys and we'll check it out. I'm not sure how far we'll get but we can try."

"Try hard. Be careful. Whatever was unearthed is strong and mystical. It has no say in what it's doing. Make sure to protect yourself and your men as much as possible. Use every bit of energy you have for protection spells before you go near that beach." Bitsey's face went very stern.

"It's okay. We'll handle it. Don't let it make you negative now. We might need your help later. If you find anything that'll help, let me know." Stacey kissed her aunt on the cheek.

Bitsey nodded. "I need that sage and some meditation."

"I'll stay in touch. If I get a picture of what it is, I'll send it to you. Maybe the coven can help with research and ways to fight it? You'll be a lot more on top of mystical things than a group of soldiers." Stacey headed out and sat in her car for a few minutes.

Four men. She knew exactly who they were. Their sexual energies were often directed at her. She felt them at night, dreaming about her as she dreamt of them. Stacey's gifts were connected to energy and sensing it was second nature. It'd saved her life and others overseas. Now the beaches of her hometown needed protection.

It all fit with Sandra's vision. The men were connected as well. She also felt their sexual energy charged in other directions. Moe Finnegan and Tommy Cassidy were the two obvious ones. The two hunks were friends with benefits... especially off duty. Both insisted it wasn't romantic, but until Don't Ask Don't Tell was reversed, they had never admitted doing anything at all.

Stacey knew better. They both wanted women and each other. Neither knew how to talk about their bisexuality or feelings. They were men, after all. Still, they'd be the easy ones to lure into helping her and something more personal. She loved them both, but if they couldn't figure out a way to have a healthy relationship, she wondered if they'd be screwing around in the old soldiers' home and insisting they were just friends. It was up to her to nudge them out of their rut.

Eddie and Will would be much harder to manage. As she drove through the familiar streets of L.A., she was grateful they all lived so close. It would make meetings and conversations easier. Will first. Eddie would shut down if she brought up a subject he didn't want to deal with. That man was all action, strong and silent. The women flocked to him, so if he'd ever been with a man, it was on the way down low. Will was the most sensitive man of the four. Stacey needed an ally to help her convince and seduce the others.

Shaking off the sexual desire, she knew it'd happen. Aunt Sandra was never wrong. If she doubted her vision at all, Sandra kept it to herself and went deeper into her meditations for clarification. If she spoke of it, Sandra was sure. Even if it wasn't logical or obvious, Sandra felt it was right deep in her soul. Stacey wouldn't mind loving that many men, but it wasn't exactly normal -- even in L.A.!

~Excerpt~
Cameron Shea stared at the clock on his laptop. Another day of meetings with Lucky Springs Industrial’s new marketing guru, Zoe Avery, for him and the three other salesmen assigned locally. The Lucky Springs Industrial plant had expanded, and now, their little town was packed with factory workers. Zoe made the suddenly crowded town worth it. The higher ups really needed to add more women to the office.
Zoe was fairly new in town. She possessed brilliant marketing skills and seemed to love the ever-present male attention.
“You’re counting down to the meeting,” said Donovan Weber. Cam and Don had been a sales team and lovers for years and had grown up in Lucky Springs. They shared an office, a house, and throughout the years, various guest lovers.
“It’s a bizarre torture in a way. She’s hot as hell and loves marketing.” Cam loved Don and their shared interest in women. Don was a cute guy with brown hair and brown eyes who everyone liked instantly. Their relationship worked, but they’d included girls in their sexual relationship off and on. Occasionally, other men made the cut, too.
Now that Lucky Springs had a lot more men than women—thank you factory expansion—the bisexual men weren’t as bad off as the straight guys were. Still, this woman had a lot of attention, not just Don and Cam’s. Competition was fierce. Single women had their pick of groups, pairs or single men.
True, the men could just venture out to Baton Rouge or Shreveport, but those cities were hours away. If one wanted a woman in his life or bed regularly, Lucky Springs was still limited.
“Why don’t we just make a move on her?” Don suggested. Naturally, as salesmen, they had a bit of a competitive streak with other guys.
“Sounds good to us.” Owen Pratt leaned in the doorway with his sales partner and acknowledged boyfriend, Jarrett Falcon.
Owen and Jarrett had moved into the spare room in Cam and Don’s house a month ago when they scored their sales jobs. The town needed more apartments but having the other men around had turned out to be fun. The roommate thing helped as far as chores and saving money. Their compatibility was a plus. The guys weren’t unpleasant to look at, certainly. It was almost too comfortable.
Cam and Don had discussed their attraction to the other men. Owen was handsome, with brown hair and striking green eyes. Don loved to stare at Owen’s round ass.
Jar was blond with serene blue eyes that made him look innocent and sweet, rather like his Bible belt upbringing. So far, the quad hadn’t hooked up. The two couples had been tiptoeing around wanting each other and their mutual interest in the right woman.
“We don’t want to push her too fast. She’s only been in Lucky Springs a few months.” Jar shrugged.
“She dated around a bit before you two moved here. Zoe knows the game. We don’t want to lose out on the chance since we’ve got her captive in these meetings.” Don grinned.
“She’s not the settling down type. That’s the thing. From what I’ve heard, she’s not looking to be domestic. So let’s make it a no pressure thing until we see where it goes. Hot and seductive,” Cam said.
“All four of us? Or shall we see which duo she wants more? Pretend to fight over her a little?” Owen asked.
“I don’t think pretending is a good idea. She already thinks salesmen are full of shit. Working with as many as she has in her career, she’d see right through us. I’d rather be direct. Plus, her friend moved in with a quad of guys not long ago. We won’t freak her out. I think we’re stronger going in as a group. We all live together, so it’s less awkward and more convenient if we’re all in. Let’s see how it goes.” Don closed his laptop. “Meeting time.”
“Wait, so it’s open season. Orgy? We all screw each other, too?” Jar asked.
Attraction sparked as Cam patted Jar’s shoulder. “Afraid of all the men?”
Jar had grown up with extremely religious parents and, while his sales skills were formidable, he hesitated with personal stuff that would upset his family. Apparently, his lust for men was undeniable, and he’d made peace with one man. Cam found the allure of a pious rebel a serious turn on.
Owen chuckled. “You’re with one guy. What’s a couple more plus a girl?”
Cam knew Don wanted to play with Owen, but not everyone was as open as they were.
“If you’re good with it, so are we.” Don winked at Owen.
“I think we should keep this about Zoe. Especially at first. We can screw around at home all we want. If you guys are into it, great! We don’t mind sharing. The missing piece is the right woman. We can’t try to tie her down and lay claim like we’re cavemen. But she’s the main goal, not a side dish or this whole thing blows up.” Cam had nightmares of it backfiring. Lucky Springs was his hometown and news spread like lightning.
“If we didn’t need the right woman, we wouldn’t be hatching this plan. We’d be content with men, but we’re not. Let’s play the game she wants. Like playing golf or going to dinners to close a sales deal. It’s all about Zoe, so let’s keep it casual.” Jar shook his head. “I don’t know how to do that with sex.”
Owen smiled. “Don’t worry, just focus on her sexually. Get her off and don’t talk relationships. We’ll make the first move. Follow our lead.”
Cam nodded to Owen. “Sounds good. With any luck, we’ll keep her so happy she’ll want to stay with us.”
“Are we all sure we want her? Don’t get too attached to any ideas until we explore things.” Don grabbed his Smartphone and led the way down the hall.
“You’re right. It’s a lot of people to juggle and keep happy.” Owen checked his watch. “We’re late.”
The halls were busy, but the people seemed to part for Zoe as she walked toward the men. In a sexy skirt and heels, with a silky bronze blouse catching the light, she showed off her curves like a woman who knew exactly the sort of power she held over men. And she loved it.
Cam and Don had been studying her since she arrived. The new marketing campaign finally gave them up-close access to her without looking like horny animals on the prowl.
“Gentlemen, did I bore you so much yesterday that you’re boycotting me?” Zoe put her hands on her hips and lifted an eyebrow at them.
Her black hair was neatly angled along her chin while her hazel eyes hinted at mysterious thoughts. She wasn’t drop-dead gorgeous, but Cam preferred a real woman to fake perfection. Zoe was well put together and had confidence that made everyone take notice.
“No, we were just comparing notes,” Cam said.
Jar nodded. “Yeah, you covered a lot yesterday about the new branding and everything.”
“Well, get in that conference room for day two. We’re ordering in lunch, and I think I’ll have a surprise this afternoon.” She leaned in and gave them a big smile.
Cam inhaled her perfume and knew today was the day. She flirted with them. True, playful was her personality, but he’d caught her checking out the men yesterday. Today, it was time to get her naked on that conference table or get reported to HR. They needed to find out if she was interested.

Excerpt:

The clock below stairs chimed once, then twice. Miss Elenora Schwaab would arrive at any moment. Sure enough, the bell rang in the front hall and shortly after, I met the woman in my library where Mrs. Fletcher had deposited her.

In a color scheme that would have inspired Pierre-Auguste Renoir to fetch a blank canvas, she wore a cream-and-blue cotton confection accented by a blue-and-cream rose-bedecked bonnet, reticule, and parasol. Excitement shone brightly in eyes the pale turquoise-blue of a clear autumn sky. Ripping off her cream lace gloves, she jumped from her chair to thrust her hand at me. “Sir Nicolas! Thank you for receiving me on such short notice.”

Americans. Chuckling to myself, I bowed over her smaller hand. “Miss Schwaab, what a pleasure to see you again.” They had the oddest mannerisms. Not rude, exactly; rather forthright without the stodgier affectations of the Empire. On the whole, Americans reminded me of impressionist artists. The artists violated the rules of academic painting, and Americans violated the rules of conventionality. As a student of nuance, I very much liked it.

Mrs. Fletcher entered with the tea. Addressing my guest she said, “I wasn’t sure if you’d like lemon or milk, Miss, so I’ve set the tray with both.”

“Why, thank you ma’am.”

The housekeeper turned to me with a smile sparkling in her eyes. I could tell the sparkle came from being addressed formally when she considered herself only a housekeeper. She said, “And that bread is warm from the oven as you like it, and the butter’s fresh from the dairyman this morning. Is there anything else, Master Nicolas?”

“No dear, this is quite fine. Thank you.”

Alone now, I buttered my bread and addressed the lady busily adjusting her tea to taste. “So Miss Schwaab, you say you’ve a venture in mind…”

“Please, Sir Nicolas. Call me Ellie as all my friends do.”

I smiled at what she implied. I could certainly see us as friends. “Very well, how can I be of service, Ellie?” I took a bite and nearly choked at her next words.

“To be blunt Sir, I’m in need of a mandrake. I need you.”

My mind raced. The chit was declaring me homosexual. “I beg your pardon?”

She smiled a rather unsettling sentient smile. And in those pale intelligent eyes, I could see her thoughts forming like clouds before a rainstorm. In fact, I could almost smell the ozone in the burning machinery of her mind. When she spoke, her thoughts were perfectly ordered.

“I’m not one to beat around the bush, Sir Nicolas. Not being forthright wastes time, and time may very well be short. Last June, I overheard a rather intimate verbal exchange between you and another man. I didn’t see who he was exactly, but I did see you.”

I felt a hollow sensation in my chest. In it, I could hear the echo of my up-tempo heartbeat. “Miss Schwaab, I—”

She held up a hand to interrupt me. “Please, hear me out. I consider myself to be a progressive. You see, I don’t care what adults do behind closed doors. An individual’s nature and sexuality form the most intrinsic core of their person. And who are we to take issue with another’s nature? Only a fool would see one path to human intimacy. We are naked apes after all, and apes have no issue with homosexuality.”

I couldn’t fault her logic. “So, what do you propose Miss Schwaab? Blackmail?” Though my obvious concern wasn’t humorous in the least, she laughed merrily.

“Please, call me Ellie.”

“Ellie. I believe that was a reasonable question.”

The same smile was back and with it, sparkling eyes. “I want you to marry me.”

Completely dumbfounded, I just looked at her. “You can’t be serious Miss…”

“Ellie.”

“You can’t be serious, Ellie.

Her laugh was filled with mirth. “Oh, but I am!”

Finding that impish gleam in her eye irritating in that moment, I set my plate aside. In my mind, this meeting could go one of two ways — she’d out me for a sodomite if I didn’t do as she asked, or I’d be saddled with an insane wife. While Parliament abolished the death penalty for deviants like me years before I was born, my truth wasn’t fodder for the masses. “You have me at a disadvantage, madam. What madness would spur you to make such an outlandish proposal?”

She set her cup down and leaned forward as a man might when sharing an inside stock tip. I found myself oddly attracted to her forthright and almost mannish American attitudes. Looking me square in the eye, she said, “You are an authority on Leonardo da Vinci, correct?”

“On his artworks, I am.”

“Then I assume you are familiar with Gian Giacomo Caprotti da Oreno?”

I suppressed a smile at her halting Italian. Gian Giacomo Caprotti was da Vinci’s protĂ©gĂ©. Affectionately called Salai or the little devil by the master himself, it was said when Leonardo painted nudes and phalluses, they were modeled by his young lover Salai. The most telling of these — the sketch called Angelo-Incarnato or Angel Incarnate, which depicts the little devil himself with a substantial erection. On the back, da Vinci wrote out his turbulent feelings for the young man in Greek: astrapen, bronten, and ceraunobolian. His metaphoric choices literally translated: lightning, storms, and thunderbolts. I nodded.

She smiled. “And I assume, although not in your field of expertise, you must also be aware of such erotic artworks as Japanese pillow books and the Kama Sutra. One chapter of which was so recently translated by your celebrated orientalist, what’s the fellow’s name?”

Field of expertise? I took her question to mean I was unaccustomed to erotic works depicting women. Beyond my proclivity and given profession, of course I knew of these ancient works of erotica. I named the man for her, “Sir Richard Francis Burton—”

She cut in, “Yes, that’s the man!”

“And yes, I am aware of such books.” It was obvious when her pretty smile widened that she could see she’d hooked me like a trout. In fact, I had the impression this woman had somehow studied me at length. Though my interest was piqued, I couldn’t fathom what she was driving at, nor could I see a connection between ancient Asian renderings and da Vinci’s longtime lover… let alone a connection to a proposal of marriage to me. “And what does Salai have to do with these works?”

She smiled that smile again and this time I was met with a sense of familiarity I couldn’t quite identify, like there was more to it than what was seen upon the surface. My focus redirected when she explained, “My father is in the American Consul, you see. And now with my elder sister Luise Marie wed to Jean-Paul, I’ve become my father’s hostess when he entertains here. I don’t mind it, though listening to men talk trade and commerce mostly bores me. Anyway, enough about that.” She waved her hand and shook her head, as if determined not to go off point. “The other night my sister and her husband joined us when we entertained an Italian merchant and his relation by marriage. The former, a Signore Ambrosini, deals in raw fibers such as cotton and jute from India and is seeking business relations in the New York textile industry. I found him a likeable man. The latter... well, there was just something not quite right about him. His name is Carlo Posateri. He…”

My mind could barely keep up with the twists and turns Miss Schwaab’s mind was wont to take. Then too, I was somewhat surprised that this conversation was being piloted by a woman at all. Women of my acquaintance steered clear of most sexual topics, though every one of them would perk if the focus of conversation leaned in that direction. Sifting through her rambling recount of that night, I learned this Signore Posateri hated all things homosexual in nature, including the works of the masters. Apparently the man took pride in influencing Pope Pius IX to castrate the statues in the Vatican for the homosexual thoughts they provoked. Out of sight out of mind, I’d say, or a gloss on the phrase Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet: The man doth protest too much, methinks. In my experience, them that had the most to say against a thing often coveted that very thing. Her next words pulled me from my contemplation.

“To put it simply, I plan to steal it.”

I stared at her dumbly having not fully listened to what preceded that statement. Eyeing me suspiciously, her pretty bowed lips took on a frown when she reproached, “Oh fiddlesticks. You weren’t even listening. Have you no concept how important this work is to humanity?”

Chastened that her winding road of a tale had lulled my mind, I ate the crow. “Forgive me Miss… ” — her eyes narrowed, causing me to amend — “Ellie. My mind was lost on the man’s contribution to the Vatican’s defiled statues. Please, if you would, back up a bit and explain it again.”

She took a breath. I was struck by the curious glint of sympathy shining in her pale blue eyes and the faint blush that signaled ire or embarrassment. Unacquainted with her as I was, I stabbed in the dark and took the blush for the latter. My thought was proved right when she said sincerely, “I know I ramble when my head is so full of details, and I apologize. I really do. But please, bear with me if you will.”

“You’ll have my undivided attention, I assure you.”

Ellie brightened and launched into it again. “Alright then. Signore Posateri boasted of his measures to rid the world of artworks created by the greatest artists of the Renaissance. Jean-Paul got him to admit he buys them from private collections and destroys them, you see. When asked about pieces that were not purchasable, he said he ‘has his methods,’ which I take to mean he steals them or has thieves in his employ, the sanctimonious cur... ” Her words trailed off.

I stared at her expectantly.

Exhaling sharply in what could only be annoyance, she continued, “At this very moment in Venice, somewhere in his palazzo, he has in his possession a previously undiscovered book written and illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci’s own hand.”

Of all the things I thought she’d say, that was not one of them. “Oh?”

She nodded. “Yes, created by da Vinci for Salai. It’s a book of love, Sir Nicolas — a pillow book that managed to remain hidden for four hundred years!”

Knowing the mind and desire of the artist like I did, I could almost see this book. “Such a thing is entirely possible.”

My words brought about her effervescent smile. She asked, “Wasn’t Salai with him a long time?”

“At least twenty-five years. Salai inherited many of da Vinci’s works. How did you come upon this information? Surely they didn’t discuss this topic in your presence?”

She dug through her reticule and scoffed, “As if they would. No, when I left the men to their brandy last night, I stood just outside the door adjusting the strap on my shoe under the pretense I’d lost a button, you see. I chanced to hear Signore Posateri speaking of this book.” Pulling a folded paper from her bag, she read, “And I quote, ‘Although unsigned, in breadth and scope, there is no question this was Leonardo da Vinci’s book. It is clearly the work of a sodomite. The disgusting words of his twisted affection made more foul by the accompanying sketches.’ Galling, his hatred.”

Needing more to fully comprehend, I urged, “Go on. What else did you overhear?”

“In the conversation that followed I could tell Signore Ambrosini was put aback by his companion’s rabid fanaticism. Then I heard Jean-Paul ask him what he intended to do with it.” She read from her notes, “He said, ‘After I study it to better know the minds of these repugnant artists, I will burn it with the rest, of course.’”

She met my eyes, her fair cheeks flushed in her pique. For reasons unclear, John Opie’s oil painting of Boadicea Haranguing the Britons came to mind. She said, “Burn it! Can you just imagine the loss, Sir Nicolas? Jean-Paul was beside himself over the idea; he even offered to buy it. But the man said he’d never sell it at any cost.”

After I study it… The man’s words confirmed my earlier opinion. Signore Posateri was himself a homosexual — if not in deed, then certainly in desire. I nodded, “I agree. It would be terrible loss.”

That is why I have plans to steal it.”

I stared at her and she suddenly laughed. “Oh you think me mad, don’t you? You do. I can see it in your eyes!” She leaned forward and looked at me with interest, as if she half expected me to admit that I did indeed question her stability. How quickly she went from John Opie’s warrior queen to James Tissot’s Young Woman in a Boat. The astute little imp made me smile despite myself. “I admit I do. And where exactly do I fit into this insanity?”

“I’ve come here because time is of the essence. Signore Posateri will be leaving for Venice at the end of the week. And if we leave tomorrow, the day after, at the latest—”

“I still don’t see my presence in this scheme of yours.”

Ellie sighed. Her earlier words about wasting time came back to me. I wasn’t trying to be obtuse but for the life of me I just didn’t see it. I asked her to explain how she figured I fit her plan.

She said, “You have your influence, being an Earl and all. You’re in the House of Lords. We can use your academic standing and income to save these precious artworks from being destroyed by this fanatic, for surely he is in possession of more than one. You know Leonardo da Vinci’s works. You’ll know at a glance if Signore Posateri is correct in his assumption that this is indeed Salai’s pillow book.” When I didn’t comment she added, “Look, I know you barely know me, but I know you, and I’m completely alright with it.”

“Alright with it?”

“Yes.”

She reached across the distance between us to briefly place a small warm hand over mine in a comfortable gesture which I recognized as sincerity. I had an idea of what she meant, but needed clarification. It wouldn’t do to guess wrongly. “You’re referring to my particular predilection?”

“Yes.”

I rubbed the point between my eyes.

She asked, “As a friend, may I leave your title aside and call you Nicolas?” At my nod she continued. “Nicolas, I’m no fool. For all that I’m a progressive woman: I live in a man’s world. And while society may change in the future, I’m hindered in the here and now. It would be difficult to travel on my own, and certainly tracking down homoerotic artworks would be next to impossible for a woman. I wouldn’t even know how to ask about them; trained proficient I’m not. Were we to marry, I see advantage for the both of us outside this venture.”

“Advantage?”

“Yes, you’ll be free to love who you will without society casting rude speculations your way. And aside from my being free to be who I am, I’ll benefit by a social standing that will allow me to affect change from within society.”

I considered her a moment. Miss Elenora Schwaab was an extremely pleasant-looking young woman with her wise blue eyes and cinnamon hair. She was fit and fashionable, and without a doubt a highly-educated and intelligent person. Her ready humor and matter-of-factness were also quite appealing. Yes, I could see myself enjoying this woman’s companionship if nothing else.

Running down a list of potential advantages of marrying someone not shocked or repulsed by my nature, I surprised myself by finding her proposal no less than brilliant. Many marriages started with far less. Still, there was one bit that must be addressed. It had always been my understanding that one day I’d be pressed to marry and sire children. When one inherits the title of Earl, especially a Halstead Earl, there are responsibilities one must naturally live up to. But until that hourglass ran out, I considered myself free to love and enjoy whom I would. To be fair she’d have to be told. “I must tell you that I have obligations to my title and estate. These obligations would necessitate my producing an heir in the future.”

My wording was met by a brief frown. I could see she hadn’t considered such an intimacy between us were we to marry as she proposed. This was confirmed by her next words. “But wouldn’t that be imposs… that is to say… I mean… oh fiddlesticks. But you don’t enjoy women that way.”

Summoning my straight-faced composure, I said, “We British are nothing if not dutiful. Perhaps with the lights off.” Her expression priceless, I laughed. “I’m teasing you, my dear. Actually, I’ve never attempted to make love to a woman. And truth be told, I don’t see that happening for a good many years yet.”

Something akin to relief shown in her eyes, suggesting if she had say in the matter it would be a long ways into the far-distant future. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but didn’t have too much time to contemplate my curious reaction to her relief, for next she blurted, “Then lights on or off, we’ll cross that bridge as it comes. Let’s marry straightaway.”

My earlier opinion fortified. The unflappable Ellie Schwaab, late of America, was indeed bold-as-brass. There was no denying this outrageous proposition made sense. For one, it negated the need for an awkward conversation with a future wife, for surely Ellie was one of a kind. I’d be, as she said, Free to love whom I will. I found myself liking the idea very much. If nothing else it would stop the parade of marriageable young women thrust my way at every social gathering. I nodded. “It does make good sense doesn’t it?”

“It does, and I assure you I’ve come to this opinion from every angle.” She gave me a brilliant smile and laid her hand back on mine. This time she left it there. I covered it with my own. And that’s exactly how Grannie found us when she walked into the room.

“You’ve obviously something to tell me, Nicolas,” my grandmother said without preamble, an unmistakable glint of joy in her albescent eyes.

Rising, I brought Ellie to stand beside me, hooking her arm in mine in what I hoped would be a convincing display of affection. I said, “Grannie, may I introduce my fiancĂ©e, Miss Elenora Schwaab, daughter of Mitchel Schwaab, the American Consul to her Majesty. Ellie, may I introduce you to Countess Lady Augusta Halstead, my grandmother.”

Her hand thrust forward in that very American gesture and had my grandmother bubbling with charmed delight. To my surprise, Ellie not only had a fair working knowledge of me, she knew about my family. When my Grannie incorrectly deduced our love began at Lady Margaret Eastlake’s garden party a year ago, neither of us dissuaded her. The cover was brilliant, and I was once more taken with Ellie’s quick intelligence. In short order I’d become quite fond of her. This might work out well after all.

Somewhat surprised to see an expression that was at once both delighted and relieved, I met Grannie’s eyes over my recently acquired fiancĂ©’s head and winked at her. I could almost see the visions of babies forming above the dear old woman’s very large hat.
